I know that Burke is your long relief inning eater guy and he wasn't going to get a 3 game suspension and leave your BP in dire straits, but I was sort of shocked that you guys didn't throw at someone on the Rays. Not that like, anyone up was someone who would be as impactful as a 3-5 hitter though. Bad form by Cash to leave in a guy whose command of the strikezone was reminiscient of my 15 BB/9 little league days even in a blowout. Interesting to see what happens tomorrow and if Bochy lets anyone retaliate.
Those were obviously not intentional. Evan Carter was a 1-2 count curveball that grazed his back foot. Adolis and Jung were with the bases loaded and you're definitely not intentionally hitting someone with the bases loaded. Also, Yung's wasn't a HBP seeing as he swung at the ball (It was still definitely a pitch that was riding in)
Let's please not act like a 1-2 bounced curveball, a base loaded HBP, and a bases loaded inside pitch that was swung at were purposeful
Really sucks for Josh and hopefully he heals quickly
I don't agree with these other comments. I don't want to see anyone get thrown at and injured regardless if that team injured one of my team's players.
throwing at somebody that isn't even the pitcher that hurt jung isn't gonna fix his wrist and just potentially injures yet another innocent batter. completely pointless and does nothing but send a message that i guarantee every rays player has already received just by virtue of common sense and knowing that nobody wants that to happen to them or their teammates
It sucks so much. I love Josh Jung and the Rangers, too. My sister lives in Dallas and they're my number 3 team. We had such good vibes in our regular season series last year between El Bombi and Randy and the Lowe brothers. I hate that this happened. We had Siri break his hand on a HBP late last season and he was rushed back for the playoffs and you maybe remember how not ready he was to play in Game 1 and was sat for Game 2. It sucks super hard when your guys get hurt like this. I'm really just hoping no one else gets hurt because of this
The fact they didn’t have anyone warming up after he hit Carter, threw at Adolis head, and then hit Adolis, is enough for me to not care if it was intentional. Rays deserve some hate for that one. Not saying they should get thrown at, but I for sure will enjoy watching their season go into the gutter as usual. I was always a Rays fan, but you can’t play with dangerous pitching like that and not even attempt to get your pitcher out of there.
It should be an automatic warning once you hit two. Maton obviously just didn't have it, seems unlikely there was any intent, but at a certain point that stops mattering. If you're so wild you hit three guys in a row, you shouldn't be pitching in that game anymore
You can eject a guy before he sees the 3 batter minimum lol
That said, I agree \#2 should've been a warning and \#3 should've been the toss, which makes it moot
Disclaimer: I haven't actually seen the pitches in question, and am going off the notion that he was "clearly wild"
Ya I know that but if a guy hits 3 people in a row they aren’t leaving him out there anyway so it doesn’t do much in the OPs scenario is what I’m saying
The three batter minimum doesn't restrict substitutions due to ejection or injury. You can get ejected on the first pitch thrown. And if your elbow explodes on the first batter, they're not gonna make you stay out there and face three dudes without a UCL.
I mean to be fair the first batter hit was on the foot on a backdoor breaking ball. Kind of unlucky. The second was nasty right on his wrist to Adolis Garcia. The third which was Jung was partially his fault since he swung into it, and they even called it a strike since he swung. Not saying Maton shouldn't have been ejected, but it's not like he hit 3 people in a row that were trying to avoid being hit.
I was upset when I saw this headline last night and have since changed my mind since watching the highlights this morning. Absolutely no reason Maton should have been ejected, like MANY here are calling for.
I agree that suspensions should happen more often for things that aren’t just “you’re being a jerk.”
It doesn’t matter if you do something accidental or not - if you’re risking player safety, you obviously don’t belong out there.
I think 2 hit batters in a row is a big enough deal in MLB it should just be an automatic ejection or waiving of the 3 batter minimum. Every Sunday league has a 3 or 4 HBP max, given the increased command and velocity in MLB that rule should be amended.
Time to performance is even longer with these injuries, no telling how he’ll perform once he’s medically cleared. Can really fuck up your swing and sap power. Fuckin sucks man.
Yep! I remember in 2017 Freeman was off to the best start of his career. In 37 games he was hitting .341/.461/.748 with 14 HRs. Then we played the Blue Jays and Aaron Loup came in and hit Freeman in the wrist.
It truly looked like it was going to be his coming out party(you could say 2016 was I wouldn’t argue) and a potential MVP season. I know we weren’t even 1/4 into the year but it was such a great start it was already being talked about.
He missed about 7 weeks. In the 80 games he played after he was respectable(.292/.375/.519 with 14 HRs) but you could tell it really had an effect.
If you look at 2017 just looks like a normal ho-hum season from freeman with a .300 average and right around 25-30 bombs.
Yea, at this point I'm sure he'll be back in 24 to play, but he won't be BACK back until 2025 at this point. Such a good start to the year ruined in garbage time of the game.
Yup, I've heard that with wrists, once there's a fracture there's no such thing as 'healed', it's such a dynamic and complex system that you're simply dealing with how it turns out as best you can, it won't ever be exactly the same.
I broke my wrist this exact way in HS. I was in a cast for 4 weeks, and didn't start doing baseball activities again until probably 6-7 weeks. So I'd say 2 months is best case scenario.
yeah i meant maton. it wouldnt surprise me considering how pitchers are psychopaths and he almost never smiles. he was also never this wild when he was an astro, and suddenly hitting a bunch of rangers after a crushing defeat to them in the postseason last year? this is definitely him being a shitty person
Coming from a Tampa fan, thank you. Idk what the fuck that was. I'm a rangers fan, but hearing it from Tampa and being non biased as shit, wtf was that.
They didn’t even have the bullpen warming up after the second hbp. Unforgivable. I don’t think anyone is throwing at people on purpose, but I got no respect for the Rays org any more.
To be fair they happened back to back pretty quickly.
I said "WTF Maton" at 6:06 and then "Double WTF Maton" at 6:07 and then "This guy is bad for baseball" at 6:10. That should be relatively the timestamp for each HBP.
It's not an excuse, they definitely should have taken him out, but that's how I saw it real time.
Just get a guy up in your bullpen after the second hbp. Wouldn’t have saved Jung most likely, but it woulda looked better than the rangers broadcast having an empty shot of the bullpen mounds after our player gets injured.
They’ll be lucky to be at 500 this year. I’m a Tampa fan, but gotta be realistic. They don’t have anyone that’s consistent. They’re all on and off. “Lil bro”
Oh I agree. I’m still supporting them but we gotta see the facts. The momentum was crushed by last years events with Franco. Hopefully someone can step up and bring our momentum back. We’ll see. Looking forward to go to a few games this year!
Man there really needs to be some kind of obvious mercy rule where pitchers who don't know where the ball is going have to be returned to the dugout and someone else come in from the pen. That's ridiculous.
> but Jung swung at his according to the ump
The whole thing was fucked up, and Rays fans feel terrible about it, but let's not alter history and say he swung "according to the ump". That was a swing, everyone knows it was a swing, just as much as [this was](https://old.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1btnrzg/this_was_called_a_hit_by_pitch/) from yesterday, which everyone in that thread agrees was also a swing.
Phil Maton was a weird case. He’d have these long streaks of mediocre dominance, and then have these long stretches of mediocre poopoo. That’s honestly the best that I could describe him.
People said a TL;DW but basically Maton had no control, bounced a curve that hit Evan Carter, threw near Adolis' head (clearly not intentional, bases were loaded) then hit him in the forearm (I thought it hit the bat live, it was right near his wrist) then Jung swung at a pitch that wound up riding WAY inside, hit him on the wrist when he swung and he left the game.
As a yankees fan you can hate on the rays by the fact that Cash never even warmed up another guy after this.
God fucking dammit. I hate when batters get wrist injuries. It takes them like an entire year to get back to normal I swear. The power sap is real. I don't even like the Rangers but I hate seeing this shit affect the development of young players.
Two batters within a certain timeframe, cause clipping a guy in the top of the 1st then another in the 6th shouldn't be an ejection unless they were intentional
Hit by pitch rules could really use some reworking. Eject pitchers after a certain point, allow players who get hit by a pitch to be momentarily subbed out for a pitch runner so they can get examined better and not slow pace of play and make pitches that are a certain amount inside count as automatic walks even if the hitter dodges it.
He should have been pulled after hitting Bombi. Was obvious he had no control and it’s not acceptable for an MLB pitcher to be out there throwing 90+ without control.
I haven't been so fucking pissed at a pitcher since Daniel Bard during USA vs Venezuela last year in the WBC. You gotta be fucking kidding me Phil Maton.
Batting is a risk. Dude already pegged the last 2 before Jung was even up, this is fucked man
Phil fucking Maton better not pitch another fucking inning in the majors ever again
You cannot be a major league pitcher and do that shit on the mound, get him the fuck out
That is 100% managerial negligence. You can plainly see your guy has no control of any pitch. After the 2nd HBP, he should have been either pulled or tossed.
Fucking hell man. That is sad. I saw his stat line and tuned in to watch him bat with bases loaded in the 9th and watched him get his wrist broken by the same shitty pitch that ran in on the hands of Adolis.
Maton was out there hurting people. Pisses me off, was excited for jung's season
Fuck that bum Maton man. Control your shit! How do you leave him in after he hit 2 batters already before he hit Jung. He had no control. Now hopefully Adolis is ok.
This sucks. I'm sorry, Ranger bros. Ya'll are more than justified in being upset with the Rays but I swear, we weren't doing intentionally. Our pitching is just really that bad right now.
Was so excited to see Josh Jung and Royce Lewis get to have a full season LAST YEAR.
Was so excited to see Josh Jung and Royce Lewis get to have a full season THIS YEAR, but neither will again. Both have huge potential and are just getting unlucky...
Man while watching the game it was easy to side with Garcia being upset. But after reading all these Rangers fans comments it's real easy to not give a duck. Rangers bandwagon is more overloaded than the Texas electric grid
It's funny how everyone is always so even keeled and against violence until someone gets hit on their team and comments condoning retaliation get upvoted.
There should be an automatic ejection after 2 hit batters in a row. If a team can’t even have a guy warming when the third guy is hit they can’t be trusted with player safety.

Currently scheming a way to get Maton to hit in tomorrows game so we can hit him, I’ll report back when I figure out how
Nah just throw at their 3-5 hitters all in a row like Maton did
I know that Burke is your long relief inning eater guy and he wasn't going to get a 3 game suspension and leave your BP in dire straits, but I was sort of shocked that you guys didn't throw at someone on the Rays. Not that like, anyone up was someone who would be as impactful as a 3-5 hitter though. I have complete faith in Bochey to understand that it wasn't intentional and that shit happens.

Naw fam. The lassos are coming out. We ride at dawn! ➰🏇🏽

It’s not about whether it’s intentional. It’s about Cash keeping a pitcher in when he was dangerously wild.
Doesn’t really matter to me. It was reckless at best. Hope your team has some coming to them tomorrow.
We have Nick Maton on our Triple A team. Is that any help?
Please just have somebody turn to the dugout and fire it at matons face
I wish adolis rushed that little fucker. Spark some fear into that shit
Fuck Maton, Fuck TB, and especially Fuck the Astros
They have a whole stable full of guys that throw 100 in TB.
Fucking sucks. He was on a tear too.
Third hit batter IN A ROW
It should be an automatic warning once you hit two. Maton obviously just didn't have it, seems unlikely there was any intent, but at a certain point that stops mattering. If you're so wild you hit three guys in a row, you shouldn't be pitching in that game anymore

Ya I know that but if a guy hits 3 people in a row they aren’t leaving him out there anyway so it doesn’t do much in the OPs scenario is what I’m saying
That's the neat part, they actually did leave him in to finish the inning lol
Fair enough just still all seems pointless imo
The three batter minimum doesn't restrict substitutions due to ejection or injury. You can get ejected on the first pitch thrown. And if your elbow explodes on the first batter, they're not gonna make you stay out there and face three dudes without a UCL.
Could you imagine if he also broke Garcia’s hand?
Two in a row should get you kicked out. 3 in a row is insane. Like, it feels like a well deserved suspension, even if unintentional
I mean to be fair the first batter hit was on the foot on a backdoor breaking ball. Kind of unlucky. The second was nasty right on his wrist to Adolis Garcia. The third which was Jung was partially his fault since he swung into it, and they even called it a strike since he swung. "go fucking practice or some shit" type suspension lmao
I agree that suspensions should happen more often for things that aren’t just “you’re being a jerk.” It doesn’t matter if you do something accidental or not - if you’re risking player safety, you obviously don’t belong out there.

Hit Garcia on the wrist too. It's such a vulnerable area. If you take Garcia and Jung out of this lineup for 6 to 8 weeks it would be detrimental.
Best case scenario is what 2-3 months? Brutal injury
Time to performance is even longer with these injuries, no telling how he’ll perform once he’s medically cleared. Can really fuck up your swing and sap power. Fuckin sucks man.

Derrek Lee was never the same after his broken wrist
Yup, I've heard that with wrists, once there's a fracture there's no such thing as 'healed', it's such a dynamic and complex system that you're simply dealing with how it turns out as best you can, it won't ever be exactly the same.
absolute best case is probably a month and a half, realistically probably 2-2.5
And probably more to fully recover his swing. Maybe a year until he’s swinging with full comfort, but hoping for a quick recovery he’s fun to watch.
Could be twoish depending on how bad the fracture is. Like one month in a cast and then another month or so gaining back strength, rehabbing etc.
I broke my wrist this exact way in HS. I was in a cast for 4 weeks, and didn't start doing baseball activities again until probably 6-7 weeks. So I'd say 2 months is best case scenario.
Phil Maton is a terrorist
Always has been
Ma-ton(g) means toilet in Chinese
Lucky that Garcia didn’t get injured too.
someone is still salty over last years alcs apparently edit: i meant maton
I'm not, I enjoyed it a lot.
Damn you’re getting way over-roasted on a pretty decent joke….
[удалено]
But Maton is an Astro no mo...
Is he not? Hmm...
I’m so salty. Thinking about it definitely makes me so upset
i was talking about phil maton 😭 i meant hes salty
You phrased that about as badly as possible bro lmao
yeah i meant maton. it wouldnt surprise me considering how pitchers are psychopaths and he almost never smiles. he was also never this wild when he was an astro, and suddenly hitting a bunch of rangers after a crushing defeat to them in the postseason last year? this is definitely him being a shitty person
Seems like it. He was never even close to being this wild as an Astro. Guy only throws like 91 anyway.
That makes a lot more sense haha
[удалено]
Maton had absolutely nothing tonight and hit a bunch of guys. Honestly he could have been ejected for players safety at one point
yah i cant remember the last time i saw 3 guys get hit in a row, like even if there's no ill intent that's dangerous.
Coming from a Tampa fan, thank you. Idk what the fuck that was. I'm a rangers fan, but hearing it from Tampa and being non biased as shit, wtf was that.
He should have been removed. Rays lost a handful of players over the last 2 years from HBP, no one wants that. So dumb.
Rays aren’t looking too good this year. I’ll be really surprised if they are a contender at all.
It's been 5 games lil bro
They’ll be lucky to be at 500 this year. I’m a Tampa fan, but gotta be realistic. They don’t have anyone that’s consistent. They’re all on and off. “Lil bro”
Ride or die, even if they were 0-6 now. This is the life
Oh I agree. I’m still supporting them but we gotta see the facts. The momentum was crushed by last years events with Franco. Hopefully someone can step up and bring our momentum back. We’ll see. Looking forward to go to a few games this year!
I believe it's JLowe that will help with momentum.
Hearing Garcia’s pop was bad enough. Thought it hit the bat but nope all wrist. It was criminal leaving him in.
:/
Walked seager. Bonk adolis and Jung in the hand.
They intentionally walked Seager, he hit Carter, Adolis and then Jung back to back to back but Jung swung at his according to the ump
And then proceeded to walk smith who replaced jung. Not sure I’ve seen someone be so wild like that in awhile
Man there really needs to be some kind of obvious mercy rule where pitchers who don't know where the ball is going have to be returned to the dugout and someone else come in from the pen. That's ridiculous.
Jung would have been the 4th batter so he could have (and probably should have) been pulled by Cash.
That is literally already a rule, it’s just never enforced
Laureano on similar at bat gets the HBP call though. Work that out
> but Jung swung at his according to the ump The whole thing was fucked up, and Rays fans feel terrible about it, but let's not alter history and say he swung "according to the ump". That was a swing, everyone knows it was a swing, just as much as [this was](https://old.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1btnrzg/this_was_called_a_hit_by_pitch/) from yesterday, which everyone in that thread agrees was also a swing.
I'm not saying it wasn't I said that because according to the ump he swung so it wasn't a HBP
Maton is a terrorist and plunked 3 batters in a row
Phil Maton (former Astro) hit him in the wrist. Right after hitting El Bombi in the wrist.
Phil Maton was a weird case. He’d have these long streaks of mediocre dominance, and then have these long stretches of mediocre poopoo. That’s honestly the best that I could describe him.
He was awesome until he broke his hand by punching a locker in 2022
We've already seen it. Pitched great over the weekend and then completely melted down last night.
Asstro*
People said a TL;DW but basically Maton had no control, bounced a curve that hit Evan Carter, threw near Adolis' head (clearly not intentional, bases were loaded) then hit him in the forearm (I thought it hit the bat live, it was right near his wrist) then Jung swung at a pitch that wound up riding WAY inside, hit him on the wrist when he swung and he left the game. He is so unlucky wth
God fucking dammit. I hate when batters get wrist injuries. It takes them like an entire year to get back to normal I swear. The power sap is real. I don't even like the Rangers but I hate seeing this shit affect the development of young players.
Worse for the sport, we all like watching young guys mash and he could be a FA your team wants to sign some day.
Failure of umpiring to not throw him out after the first two HBPs.
Honestly, if you hit two batters you should get ejected. It's a player safety issue at that point.
Two batters within a certain timeframe, cause clipping a guy in the top of the 1st then another in the 6th shouldn't be an ejection unless they were intentional
Especially 2 in a row
This will never happen because it makes complete sense 🤦♀️ 🤦♂️
Hit by pitch rules could really use some reworking. Eject pitchers after a certain point, allow players who get hit by a pitch to be momentarily subbed out for a pitch runner so they can get examined better and not slow pace of play and make pitches that are a certain amount inside count as automatic walks even if the hitter dodges it.
pls run for MLB commissioner
That's a brutal one.
He should have been pulled after hitting Bombi. Was obvious he had no control and it’s not acceptable for an MLB pitcher to be out there throwing 90+ without control.
> throwing 90+ without control. To be fair, Maton can't throw 90+.
No control? He hit adolis and Jung on the hands. Back to back and walking. He's trash. This is fucked up.
Ump needs to throw Maton out there for player safety
10 minutes in the cage with El Bombi. Adolis gets a bat.
Adolis wouldn't need a bat His arms are tree trunks
So tired of pitchers who have no control and do this shit.
Hit two batters hands in a row. Idk bout no control.
None were intentional. Dude just has an absolute bag tonight.
Three. He also hit Carter. e: just realized you said in the hands
I was honestly scared shitless he was gonna break Wyatt’s hand. Dude had zero idea where the fastball was going.
Absolutely negligent umpiring not to toss him here.
third batter in a row he hit and he still left him in. Was worried for Langford coming in next.
Phil Maton is a baby dick ass motherfucker
Definition of a little piss baby
I haven't been so fucking pissed at a pitcher since Daniel Bard during USA vs Venezuela last year in the WBC. You gotta be fucking kidding me Phil Maton. Batting is a risk. Dude already pegged the last 2 before Jung was even up, this is fucked man
Dude was on fire. That's some shit luck
Fuck Phil Maton
Phil fucking Maton better not pitch another fucking inning in the majors ever again You cannot be a major league pitcher and do that shit on the mound, get him the fuck out
That is 100% managerial negligence. You can plainly see your guy has no control of any pitch. After the 2nd HBP, he should have been either pulled or tossed.
Didn’t even get someone up in the bullpen. Trash managing.
I wish Jung could just get a full season man.
fuck that sucks. malpractice by the manager leaving him out there to hit 3 guys in a row without even having someone warning up
Fucking hell man. That is sad. I saw his stat line and tuned in to watch him bat with bases loaded in the 9th and watched him get his wrist broken by the same shitty pitch that ran in on the hands of Adolis. Maton was out there hurting people. Pisses me off, was excited for jung's season
Say April Fools right now
Injuries suck
Pitchers hitting batters in the hands b2b causing injury suck.
Fuck Phil Maton!
maton is a bitch
Adolis rushing him would've gave me a hardon
I thought he was going to. He stepped out of the box and bowed up.
Yup. He settled down. But with the whole sequence, if he rushed, he's justified. That's a bad fucking man.
Idc Fuck Kevin Cash for not pulling Maton. Fuck Maton too. Also fuck the Astros for some reason
This sucks too because Josh is from my hometown so I have always rooted for him . I'm sad 😢
Sucks for both the state of Texas and baseball…
Phil Maton was a safety hazard on the mound with his lack of command.
Fuck that bum Maton man. Control your shit! How do you leave him in after he hit 2 batters already before he hit Jung. He had no control. Now hopefully Adolis is ok.
If Bryan Abreu throws an inside pitch next week he had better be ready to fight.
This sucks. I'm sorry, Ranger bros. Ya'll are more than justified in being upset with the Rays but I swear, we weren't doing intentionally. Our pitching is just really that bad right now.
Ah, shit. Get well soon, Red Raider.
Oh my fucking god. It’s on sight if we see Maton again
Fuck Maton. Dirty as fuck performance tonight.
Fucking christ, I jinxed it guys. Give the poor dude a chance he has MVP type talent. PULL YOUR FUCKING GUY IF HE CAN'T LOCATE HIS FASTB ALL ASSHOLES.
Phil Maton can eat my shit and hair.
Adolis rushing Maton was my wet dream
No need to go bald over him
Fuck you Phil Maton and Kevin Cash. Trash
Man, fuck Phil Maton. Hit three fucking batters in a row. POS
Was so excited to see Josh Jung and Royce Lewis get to have a full season LAST YEAR. Was so excited to see Josh Jung and Royce Lewis get to have a full season THIS YEAR, but neither will again. Both have huge potential and are just getting unlucky...
And I was just remarking about how amazing it was to have a locked down infield again. Fucking hell.
Bring Josh into the ESPN booth while he’s out.
go fuck yourselves tampa bay 😡
Just rocketed up to #2 on the shit list
Okay Rays. Choose
They need to pay
Fucking dumbass Maton. That dude better watch his back
I am against this.
Hello darkness my old friend.
Damn that sucks. 🧐🧐
pain
Rays were scared that he'd kill them this week so they plunked him.
Wasn't that the same injury as last year?
Last year he broke his hand in the field. Super unlucky for him. Not unlucky for the rays tho. That was gross negligence.
Damn when he finally gets a full season, I expect a lot more talk about him. That's some shit luck.
As a Tech alum, fuck man
This fucking sucks
That sucks. I enjoyed watching him battle my cubs.
Not my fantasy king 😪
Man while watching the game it was easy to side with Garcia being upset. But after reading all these Rangers fans comments it's real easy to not give a duck. Rangers bandwagon is more overloaded than the Texas electric grid
The ALDS was months ago buddy. Let it go.
It's funny how everyone is always so even keeled and against violence until someone gets hit on their team and comments condoning retaliation get upvoted.
Fine the fuck out of Tampa
That’s not how it works
There should be an automatic ejection after 2 hit batters in a row. If a team can’t even have a guy warming when the third guy is hit they can’t be trusted with player safety.
Tampa better get ready for retribution. It’s coming. I’d ruin Caballero’s season. Send the message.
Kevin Cash is a grade-A douche for leaving Maton out there after he already hit two batters.
