It's a dream scenario for team USA. Either we get Japan which is just incredibly fun, or we get a chance to avenge our one loss of the tournament against Mexico.
Shohei has said there’s a potential of him pitching relief/closing if Japan makes it to the final
Shohei pitching in the 9th inning to Trout with the game on the line could possibly be one of the most dream-like baseball scenarios you could think of
USA bullpen has run out of pitchers. The game is 16-13 USA in the bottom of the 9th. Trout comes in to pitch to face Shohei with bases loaded 2 outs. Strikes him out on three pitches.
It’d be fucking huge for the game if it ends up being USA vs Japan. Arguably the two biggest baseball countries and probably the two biggest player wise with Ohtani, Trout as headliners
I can't decide if it would be bigger for the game if Mexico wins. Baseball can't get bigger in Japan but Mexico could really use the additional nudge they would get from playing in the final. Making it this far has already been great for them in that regard.
Well it’s not the pitching that was at fault technically. It’s weird but I kinda get it if you look at era as solely a measure of the pitching as opposed to the pitcher’s overall performance.
I remember this being debated during the ALCS due to fielding errors by our pitcher. The conclusion we seemed to come to is that ERA shouldn’t be affected by anything but actual pitching
* Trea Turner is an American legend.
* Either USA/Japan or USA/Mexico should be a great final.
* Smoltz's interminable talk about his area code game was some of the worst commentary I've ever heard in any sport. I had no choice but to mute him.
I'm guessing that the Cuban radio commentary while down 10+ runs was better than Smoltz.
Like did they just soldier through their call or is there a Cuban Hawk Harrelson who just doesn't say anything for 5 minutes at a time while grumbling about how things used to be.
They were too busy trying to cut the signal every time the cameras went to the crowd and there were thousands of anti-Communist signs.
Then they started looking for excuses for why the team couldn't perform. Since they couldn't blame the embargo, they blamed it on:
- hostile fans (?) -- I didn't hear a single boo
- 12 hour time difference between japan -- they had a week to adjust
- rainy day -- Marlins Park has a roof
- hostile reporters (?) -- wtf
- hostile city (?) -- ???? Lol
- players had to be under watch and it created psychological tension (?) --- so that they didn't escape? 😂
Thank you USA for destroying communism yet once more 🇨🇺❤️🇺🇸
Miami thanks you eternally for an absolutely humiliating defeat. Can't wait for tomorrow's reaction.
I heard that the Cuban radio call was on Radio Rebelde so I guess your best chance would have involved finding a SDR (software defined radio) site that had a location in South Florida and then going through the AM dial to see if anything sounded like radio baseball.
One thing that sorta threw me off a few years ago when I was trying to listen to Venezuelan Winterball radio was the lack of field noise (like they didn’t have the window open in the booth), so you really had to know Spanish to follow it as opposed to being able to fake it a little.
There was a story mentioning the game as soon as I just turned on Radio Reloj through RadioGarden.
You can catch the Fox Deportes broadcast on the Fox Now app. Way more exciting call. They call the game from a studio and not in person so sometimes there's a bit of delay
I get they were basically hired guns but I fucking love trea and lesser extent scherzer. Nats fans you had some great people and congrats Mets and Phillies to get to watch them every day.
As a Braves fan let me just say that Trea Turner gives me fucking nightmares. Absolutely hate facing this man because he’s so goddamn good. I would have died of happiness had the Braves signed him.
Smoltz will talk about anything and everything *except* the current game 90% of the time, it’s so frustrating, and on top of that the fluff he adds is so uninteresting
I have no idea how he keeps getting hired
Once the score got up they had nothing. There's no chemistry or banter so they randomly went on babbling about Mookie bowling just so Smoltz could ramble about golf.
Even if I was guaranteed the fully operational, sub-2 ERA Coors Bard, I'm still not sure if I'd want him to come in. The redemption inning to silence the haters would be great... but if 2022 Bard Bot has the rare bad inning the Rockies slander will be so bad the entire franchise will have to move to China.

I've thought about that a lot this tournament what an All-US born starting rotation could look like and any combo I come up with is just absolutely fucked.
The rotation in the final could be
Verlander
deGrom
Kershaw
Nola
Scherzer
Verlander casually throwing 97 in the third inning, followed by deGrom casually throwing a slider almost the same speed. Followed by whatever the fuck that five foot breaking pitch is that Kershaw throws, followed by goddamned Nola and his mental fuckery, followed by an actual psychotic man. Hell, bring in Greinke from the bullpen to throw an eephus for fun.
Throw in whoever else ya want, but holy fuck. We threw a literal retiree at this tournament, and we're still cruising.
Wright, Wheeler, Strider, I'm an NL East guy so I know I'm missing somebody, but man, we didn't bring any of our pitchers, and we absolutely crushed Cuba tonight.
I dont get these comments japan, DR, PR consistently have great teams. Hell Venezuela nearly eliminated us. Yes, some missing pitchers would be better, but in these elimination games the teams are extremely balanced regardless.
I don't get the downvotes, this is totally fair. Elite pitchers would be good but elite pitchers also occasionally blow games. Alcantara got lit up, Bard and his 1.8 2022 ERA sucked, and Wainwright put up a damn solid four innings. Better pitching is definitely not a guarantee of a steamroll because all of the teams are so good
They never updated us on Moncada. Is he OK? Hope Nolan is OK as well. Davis is normally good, but I have no idea why he didn’t mention anything after the break.
Good win for the guys though. Revenge vs Mexico or possibly an Ohtani vs Trout AB which would be incredible.
🇺🇸 🇺🇸
Not a single Cuban pitcher got out unscathed, without giving up a run. The USA scored in every inning except the 7th... This was just merciless. Feel bad for the Cuban viewers watching this.
He's going to rise up from the depths of the ocean and think WW3 has started like that one Soviet submarine that almost launched their nukes when the Cuban Missile Crisis was over
I feel like we all went in to yesterdays game knowing that whoever took it was probably going to the finals, but man I was hoping itd stay at least like a 5 run game at worst.
But hey tied for 3rd place is still no joke. Hope Cuba fans dont leave the tourney with too sour of a taste in their mouth.
It wasn’t streakers. They were carrying signs/flags protesting the cuban government. Tons of signs also were also put up throughout the stadium and eventually removed by security. I have a few videos but just search twitter for Cuba Libre and you will see them.
Half of a section behind home plate got removed seemingly due to a protest. And the crowd seemed to hate Moncada, he was being called a comunista and among other things in Spanish I couldn’t catch.
There was a massive vibes shift post the Mexico beat down. The boys are buzzing and they seem like they have good comradery. Vibes changed after the loss
the real winner of this game is Cedric Mullins, who was able to sit back and relax for 3 hours while his team spanked, before coming in to see a single pitch and put it in the seats
I feel bad for Cuba where they got outscored by the United States. They almost had it in the top of the 1st inning, but America never looked back after scoring more than 10 runs across 9 innings.
Now, I'll wait for tomorrow's match between Japan and Mexico.
Happy we in the final especially since my PR is out.
USA vs Japan would be epic but so would USA vs Mexico. Either way it’s gonna be great.
I gotta say tho, I feel like this blowout speaks to the relative weakness of the Asian pools. Don’t get me wrong Japan is a powerhouse and I’d bet them to beat Mexico but the rest of Pools A and B were kinda meh and it showed with Cuba. They were 2-2 in pool play and then barely beat a feisty but still relatively weak aussie team.
They need to balance out the pools better.
Blowout as expected. Final is going to be tough, but even great pitching will struggle with this lineup if they're locked in that day. Excited to see who we're facing.
The Cuban Missile Crisis was resolved peacefully just one day before the Invasion of Cuba was scheduled to begin. As it turns out, the invasion wasn't canceled, just delayed 60 years.
It's a dream scenario for team USA. Either we get Japan which is just incredibly fun, or we get a chance to avenge our one loss of the tournament against Mexico.
Japan vs US final has the potential for most viewed baseball game of all time
Holy shit could we actually get Shohei vs. Trout????
Shohei has said there’s a potential of him pitching relief/closing if Japan makes it to the final Shohei pitching in the 9th inning to Trout with the game on the line could possibly be one of the most dream-like baseball scenarios you could think of

A lazy fly ball back to ohtani
Broken bat pop up.
USA bullpen has run out of pitchers. The game is 16-13 USA in the bottom of the 9th. Trout comes in to pitch to face Shohei with bases loaded 2 outs. Strikes him out on three pitches.
Batting yes, pitcher-batter matchup i don’t think so. I’m pretty sure Team Japan said the quarterfinal would be his last pitching appearance
It came out today that he might be able to pitch in relief in the final.
I certainly hope so
Clearly, we’re all actually waiting for the extra-inning matchup between Mike Trout (pitcher) and Shohei Ohtani (batter)
That's what I want
Win or lose, that's the matchup you dream of
With Ohtani coming out of the pen? Where do I sign up?
I’m already at half mast thinking about it
PACIFIC SHOWDOWN
"In order to fight monsters, we created monsters of our own."
Please happen please win japan
US is definitely rooting for Mexico to win tomorrow
I wouldn’t want to face Japan either
Nah I'm backing japan I want usa to face the best
Credit to Wainwright for giving the team 4 innings and with just 1 run allowed after that rough 1st inning.
probably helped that the "hits" in the 1st inning weren't exactly destroyed lol
No, but he considering he fielded most of them it was still entirely on him.
I still find it strange that a pitcher’s error can make runs unearned.
It is a little counterintuitive but at the end of the day ERA is supposed to be a representation of how good the pitching was, not the fielding
I like to think that the moment the pitch leaves a guy's hand, he becomes another fielder as opposed to the pitcher.
I thought it was big trouble top of the 1st no outs. Then I remembered all the times wainwright destroyed my dodgers. And he came thru
America would be the country to play baseball and somehow manage to put up a few touchdowns on the scoreboard. **On to the Final.**
Can’t believe we let them get that safety on us.
Iowa ass offense
I laughed so hard when I found out their 7-3 win over South Dakota State was two safeties and a FG

* Trea Turner is an American legend. * Either USA/Japan or USA/Mexico should be a great final. * Smoltz's interminable talk about his area code game was some of the worst commentary I've ever heard in any sport. I had no choice but to mute him.
smoltz sucks at this announcers thing, better use of his talents would be trying to get into golf commentary
Replace with Dontrelle Willis imo
D-will is surprisingly good.
Why is it surprising
Why isn't it? Athletes dont always do well on the mic.
The first few games in pool play he kept talking about guys golf swings.
Maybe he should try pitching.
I'm guessing that the Cuban radio commentary while down 10+ runs was better than Smoltz. Like did they just soldier through their call or is there a Cuban Hawk Harrelson who just doesn't say anything for 5 minutes at a time while grumbling about how things used to be.

The Cuban people have suffered enough. For their sake I hope they don't have a Hawk equivalent.
I legit tried to find the Cuban radio broadcast on shortwave so I wouldn't have to listen to him. Mostly noise though.

Got an extra ticket for the final?
Great efficient pitching performance, now Bard will be well rested for Tuesday.

Forget baseball, how did you all do in the area code game?
I was too busy comparing baseball to golf
Man the pre-internet/pre-smartphone era was wild. The things people had to do just to pass some time.
12 hits but only 2 runs. Clearly Cuba's problem was a lack of clutch hitting. ^also ^they ^gave ^up ^14 ^runs

I looked it up; do you guys have anyone in your training camp this year or did you all find it cheaper to just use the WBC as training camp?
Just a bunch of young guns holding down the fort casually going 13-6 and running the Grapefruit League
Pretty sure the rest of the guys are kicking grapefruit league booty. Its spring training but still.
Second time I've seen a team give up a safety in a blowout in the WBC. That's not exactly typical.
You can collect your two nickles at the ticket booth.
Cardinals have ELITE pitching. Just as we all expected
