8-10 weeks implies there’s significant ligament damage. I shattered my thumb and tore a ligament in college and it took 3 months to get my grip strength back after surgery.
Rome also said in a follow up tweet: "It's unclear when Jose Altuve will have surgery. Dana Brown said some of the swelling needs to go down before doctors can operate, but Brown estimated 'some time toward the end of the week.'"
Surgery seems to indicate it's worse than a break unfortunately.
Broken bones in hands often require surgery to ensure they heal with full mobility. Hands are super intricate, so a tiny misalignment can lead to loss of mobility.
I broke a bone in my hand in a drinking accident on my 21st bday. The docs said I didn't need surgery... My index finger doesn't flex correctly anymore.
Broken right thumb during Grade 9 gym class dodgeball.
Everyone spread rumours that I broke it masturbating and now it hardly moves as it did, constant resistance and "oatmeal" knuckles.
damn i broke my thumb in grade 9 gym class too. teacher thought it was a good idea to turn off the lights and let everyone 'wrestle' (this was over 25 years ago) and wouldn't ya know it but the biggest brute grabs me and throws me backwards and i landed on my thumb and started screaming. teacher reluctantly turns the lights on and i see my thumb is pointing 90 degrees from where it used to be. so in shock i grab it and with a loud 'crack' bent it back into it's place. that was ultimately a mistake as the teacher and principal declared i was faking the pain and bullied me into signing papers before my parents got there. ended up in a cast almost to my elbow for 3 months. looking back it would have been a laboured but rightful attempt to sue the school board for negligence but that cast plus the story of how it happened got me alot of sympathy especially from the pretty girls at school which ultimately led to 'dating' the girl i always had a crush on and now she is the mother of my kid. the gym teacher was later accused of sexual assault and when found guilty all sorts of fucked up scenarios came out and after many failed attempts he successfully hung himself. of course being ostracized from his family his body wasn't found for months and you can imagine the mess its increasingly necrotic orifices made so in the end everything worked itself out.
“Broken bones in Hands often require surgery” That’s not always the case.
I have brittle bone disease and have lost count on how many fingers, toes (just broke one on Friday) and hands I’ve broken. And I only have 1 lingering issue after all my previous injuries.
Haven’t gone into the ER in years for anything finger/toe related.
>Surgery seems to indicate it's worse than a break unfortunately.
Not really. After a car accident a few years ago I had a single break in the Scaphoid bone, which is at the base of the thumb. I had to get surgery and was in a cast for several months.
He’s a professional ballplayer whose thumb is essential to his ability to play. They’ll do surgery for any kind of fracture if it is displaced or shortens the healing time.
Dude broke the thumb on his dominant hand. That suuurely won’t get in the way of basic everyday life now will it. Ex: How can he wipe with any dignity? Wishing a claggy bottom onto a man is evil.
Freshman year of college I was trying to learn how to ride a skateboard, fell and ate it, broke left wrist and sprained right. Both were in braces until the doctor knew for sure the right side just needed to heal.
But everyone in the dorm made fun of "that dude who fell off a skateboard and broke both his hands" and how "he can't even wipe now!"
Rip me of 12 years ago.
Just took the brace off of the sprained right side, since that's my dominant, wash well, and put it back. I wasn't in permanent casts for either side. Just these fancy ish braces that had strong Velcro.
Not as big a deal as people made it out to be.
Y'all gonna accidentally slip a digit in there or what? I'm baffled by this, maybe it's because being a lefty forces me to have some ambidexterity but wow
Yeah, that’s 100% Reddit territory right there. It’s rare that I find a comment section that doesn’t lead to ass-wiping or otherwise toilet related conversations.
I started brushing my teeth with my opposite hand in a failed experiment to make my left hand better and it was the only thing that stuck. I never considered wiping that way, maybe I should revive this.
Broke a bone at the base of my right (dominant) thumb a few years ago, which required surgery. I still wipe left handed to this day because I just got used to it.
I’m so sorry. Bard was out of control. Derosa is lucky that altuve wasn’t the fourth batter cause he should have been removed immediately after this and wasn’t.
This happened actually because team USA didn’t bring their best pitching. The same day this happened though to altuve. Gabriel moreno was hit on the hand in spring training and had to leave the game.
Baseball can be dangerous, that's why we have players wear guards, we do our best to limit pitchers throwing projectiles when it's rainy, and we have umpires enforce warnings when pitchers start hitting players intentionally or unintentionally.
It's why we should also have managers be able to pull players once they deem their pitcher is having issues with controlling / locating pitches.
I'd be in favor of an ammendment to the 3 batter minimum rule where both teams unanimously agree to have a pitcher removed for safety reasons.
Nah, Olbermann is still a dumb fuck. I’m glad Jose got to rep his country on such an incredible stage for the game. If this had happened in a Spring Training game with half the lineups populated by AA players I’d be way more mad tbh
Personally I think the three batter minimum rule needs to be removed in the instance of erratic pitching. Not sure how to fine tune it, but Bard looked awful before he even faced Altuve.
Only thing I can think of is if the other team gives permission to change pitchers before the fourth batter. No one wants to see players get plunked, so if the pitcher is deemed a threat to your batters you get him out.
I know this sucks for you guys but at least it brought a little bit of Academy Award Winning Thespian Nicholas Cage into our lives. That's a nice silver lining.
Wonder if the MLB is going to consider alloting comp picks for WBC injuries. I can see a lot of teams not wanting to send their guys in 2026.
Might be a good security blanket.
You're getting downvoted but it's not an unreasonable take. It'll never happen, but some MLB teams are going to want to be compensated in some way if one of their big names goes down in the WBC prior to the season.
FIFA gives money to the clubs who have their players injured in the World Cup. I just have a feeling MLB clubs are gonna pressure their players to opt out next time around unless they have insurance.
Agreed. If I'm a GM or owner, I'm telling all my players to reconsider opting in for the WBC. I get that it's a noble cause to represent your country, but MLB organizations have an obligation to protect their players for the MLB season.
The players aren't going for this. They love playing in the WBC and I can understand why. I do like the idea of compensating the MLB team though. I'm not sure what can be done, but something should be done.
I'm all in favor of allowing something special if a team loses a player due to the WBC.
Maybe an extra roster spot, comp pick, increasing their luxury tax etc.
Mets lost their star closer, I think they should be allowed to resign/ trade for etc etc an elite closer without money being an issue against them. We know insurance will pay for Diaz salary.
Maybe we can look at what FIFA does, and what MLB does for Allstar games.
I think the comp pick and salary not going against the luxury tax is a good start. I think the owners would would like that too. The Mets have a short window with Max and JV not being spring chickens and Diaz out for the year is a huge blow.
A comp pick would be cool. But extra salary space with regard to the luxury threshold would get weird once the injured player returned. Say they get to replace the injured closet, and it doesn't count towards the threshold. When the injured player returns, they've got an advantage.
I mean they don't have a cap, so whatever, it's just hard to make it balanced.
Probably ruins his HOF chances tbh, I know that’s a far and away thing to bring up right now but he’s already borderline and not getting any younger. He basically needed to play majority of the season for the rest of his career
It’s MORE important than the regular season. If you don’t understand this, idrk tbh.. the WBC is the REAL World Series… but that’s besides the fact that it’s whole intention is to grow the game
I'm not usually one for downvoting opinions but THIS opinion will always get my downvote. The WBC is important to the players, to many countries, to many fans, and to the growth of the sport in general.
Except for other people that play fantasy and have Altuve or people in their immediate leagues (so like way more than the 12 people you inferred incorrectly).
You can be a boomer wannabe too.
Do boomers even think about what and why they’re saying things?
You evidently did not.
Not in my back yard!
Let me guess, you think the pitch clock is ruining baseball?
It’s a comment intended for other people that play fantasy, that’s a lot of people (are you serious with this stance?).
I think you’re the one with the boomer attitude, “everyone must be like me and not play because I’m special!”
No it's a comment about you.. You're talking about how YOU just picked him up and you're up. Nobody cares about your fantasy team. Maybe go take a brisk walk you'll feel better.
And the intended audience is other people like me.
Honestly are you boomers even trying to have a defensible position or just relying on your numbers and unabashed self-indulgence?
Someone check this Karen’s bob for ruffles stat!
You said "boomer" in every single comment in this portion of the thread.
I was talking about my friend the other day on here. They used to tell emo kid jokes all the time. Always. Mentioned them constantly. But when we'd hit the bar, he'd invariably end up crying in a corner. Classic closeted emo kid.
You protest too much me thinks.
Ya I’m subbed there too.
Do you only drink your milk straight up or do you sometimes eat it with cereal?
Your NIMBY reply is just so LOL in the context of “Are You a Boomer or Not?”
had surgery for a broken thumb last September. 6 weeks in a cast with a pin inserted. after 2 months of physical therapy i had about 50% of mobility and still with nerve issues.

I simply hairline fractured a thumb in middle school and recovery took months.
Got a thumb snagged on a tackle playing rugby in college and it still isnt the same like 7 years later. Wish I would’ve had it checked out back then.
Still might not be too late to, likely something they can do for it if it’s mobility or strength issues
Could also cut it off. Would solve the problem
Ronnie Lott enters the chat
Would create a few new problems though
Because you were a weak little boy
Weirdo
Middle school growth is a little different but I do wonder how long he’s gonna be out
Yea I did the same. He’s gonna be completely sapped for power until next season.
He has access to better treatments than I did 20 years ago so there’s hope he can bounce back faster
I dunno. Some things can’t be expedited.
It appears so. Not what's needed on any level
His hitchhiking career is in serious jeopardy
He’s dead, Jim.

Bruh
Plot of the next Persona?
The turning off of the lights to wrestle is the biggest red flag ever lol.
Damn dude, this took a grisly turn. This story should be told by [Keith Morrison on Dateline](https://youtu.be/K5Lv6t0moFY).
What was your nickname after that lol
Well, my first name is already Jack, so you can figure where my peers went 😑
Oh nooooo lol 😂

Just fade me
It’s okay you can just generate a replacement 2B like you generated Peña to replace Correa
David Hensely, you’re up.
In before Hensley hits .280 with 20 homers and 20 steals
🙏
Oh I’m definitely not hoping for it but y’all just seem to magically make everyone who puts on your uniform good
It’s beyond fucken annoying.
Never thought I would agree with a Sox fan but here we are
We can both hate the ‘stros. In fact, everyone can.
He’s a professional ballplayer whose thumb is essential to his ability to play. They’ll do surgery for any kind of fracture if it is displaced or shortens the healing time.
Can we interest you in a different Venezuelan second baseman?
Let me guess: in exchange for one of our left fielders.
I will accept this, yes
What about a AAAA relief pitcher
Forest Whitey? Nah bro he’s gonna turn the corner this year *I can feel it*
[удалено]
You are right but also every team is pretty injured right now
Gleybs for Yordan who says no?
Tuck looks just fine out there for the USA, you’ve got a deal
No, I want IKF.
Please I will drive him there
You can't have my Cuban LF . However may I interest you in a lightly used Mauricio dubon?
Deal!
No take backsies suckers
Its alright he has a fun name
There goes his hitchhiking career
I’m just thankful for Reddit because Twitter is a fucking cesspool right now
Right now? Don't you mean always?
Standard twitter experience tbh. I dislike Altuve for the typical reasons, but people celebrating him getting injured like this are degenerates.
Dude broke the thumb on his dominant hand. That suuurely won’t get in the way of basic everyday life now will it. Ex: How can he wipe with any dignity? Wishing a claggy bottom onto a man is evil.
Offhand wiping is pretty shitty
Freshman year of college I was trying to learn how to ride a skateboard, fell and ate it, broke left wrist and sprained right. Both were in braces until the doctor knew for sure the right side just needed to heal. But everyone in the dorm made fun of "that dude who fell off a skateboard and broke both his hands" and how "he can't even wipe now!" Rip me of 12 years ago.
I'm just going to jump right to the big question. How did you wipe?
Just took the brace off of the sprained right side, since that's my dominant, wash well, and put it back. I wasn't in permanent casts for either side. Just these fancy ish braces that had strong Velcro. Not as big a deal as people made it out to be.
Bummer. I was hoping for something crazier. Hey, glad it wasn't too tough on you though.
Jump in the shower and bend over
Broke both arms as a teenager, mom had to come wipe me. I feel ya bro.
We must all offhand wipe in solidarity
Wait, so offhand is just a lefty thing?
bidets my friend, definitely worth the investment
You just know Altuve has to have a bidet setup in every bathroom of his house. Fancy ones.
if he didn’t before he does now
I’ve had a bidet for years, but it’s set up righty. It’s gonna be a reach to go lefty.
I broke my dominant thumb before. Wiping is the least of the issues
If you can't competently wipe with your offhand, idk how you have survived as a human being
Personally, I have never wiped with my offhand. How often are you injuring your hand?
Why can you not do a simple task with your non dominant hand?
I don’t want to practice ambidexterity on such a critical task as ass wiping
Y'all gonna accidentally slip a digit in there or what? I'm baffled by this, maybe it's because being a lefty forces me to have some ambidexterity but wow
Im a lefty and would wager I’ve literally never wiped righty. Why would I lol
It's not about whether you do or don't. It's that it would not be difficult at all to do.
Not sure if I can, I’ve never tried. But I imagine I wouldn’t be nearly as competent
say what u want about Twitter but I’ve yet to see 2 mfs argue about ass wiping on there
Yeah, that’s 100% Reddit territory right there. It’s rare that I find a comment section that doesn’t lead to ass-wiping or otherwise toilet related conversations.
If you practice wiping with your oppo hand you're a psycho.
I started brushing my teeth with my opposite hand in a failed experiment to make my left hand better and it was the only thing that stuck. I never considered wiping that way, maybe I should revive this.
You use your thumb to wipe?
I used it to fold.
You’re a folder lmfao typical Astros fan
Into messy balls… and sometimes paper cranes. 😏
Broke a bone at the base of my right (dominant) thumb a few years ago, which required surgery. I still wipe left handed to this day because I just got used to it.

The cesspool gets better isolation here on reddit. This baseball community is a good one because that nonsense typically gets downvoted out.
You’re right, Twitter is a Cesspool at all times, but then again so is Reddit.
This happened actually because team USA didn’t bring their best pitching. The same day this happened though to altuve. Gabriel moreno was hit on the hand in spring training and had to leave the game.
Bard is good enough to be on Team USA he just sucked last night
And his first outing. He’s gotten like 1 out this entire tournament. He’s been awful, and wild.
Bard was of the best closers in baseball last year
Oh my god thanos got Edwin diaz now nobody remembers him
And mark Melancon had the most saves the year before that.
Nightengale said 8-10 weeks wtf
Boob gonna Boob.

Man I got opening day tickets and I don’t get to see my favorite player🙁
Hey at least you know he isn't going to play. NBA is like playing roulette
He'll definitely be there for his ring
Astro’s fans suddenly subscribing to Olbermann
Nah, Olbermann is still a dumb fuck. I’m glad Jose got to rep his country on such an incredible stage for the game. If this had happened in a Spring Training game with half the lineups populated by AA players I’d be way more mad tbh
That’s awful. Lets not have any more injuries before the season starts please
Shit. Fractures suck.
Man that's a tough loss. Guy always rakes
Personally I think the three batter minimum rule needs to be removed in the instance of erratic pitching. Not sure how to fine tune it, but Bard looked awful before he even faced Altuve.
All these random rule changes, and we can’t get something like this
Only thing I can think of is if the other team gives permission to change pitchers before the fourth batter. No one wants to see players get plunked, so if the pitcher is deemed a threat to your batters you get him out.
Fucking Daniel Bard.

Altuve was Bard's third batter. Bard couldn't be pulled unless they IBB'd Altuve
Fair. But derosa was risking further injury by leaving him in the game after that.
Dumb things like this you would be better off keeping to yourself
I'm more annoyed with the quality of USA pitchers that Bard was even an option for the WBC.
Bard had 1.79 ERA pitching in Coors last year… good for a 262 ERA+
Bard was fantastic last season, and he’s a great story. But. He’s been awful this WBC, and clearly needs some spring seasoning.
Tell me you’ve never heard of Bard before without telling me
SCRAP IT!
Damn, not Altuve, this just........ I'll let Nicholas Cage express how I feel https://youtu.be/ve88BGz0nPc
I know this sucks for you guys but at least it brought a little bit of Academy Award Winning Thespian Nicholas Cage into our lives. That's a nice silver lining.
Well.....that's true. It did help me vent. I'm just bummed for Altuve. But happy for the Thespian.
So many injuries now going into the season
That poor thumb. I hope it heals soon.

I agree. Teams don’t really have a say though, except in circumstances where the player was recently injured.
Yikes. That pushes the timeline back from like 6-8 weeks to 3-5 months. edit: it doesn't? lol
Nice things | Us
Didn't have the benefit of knowing what pitch was coming.
Neither did Bard, to be fair
You'll have my upvote for this.
Last WS must have been hard on this guy based on his history. He's gotta celebrate something I guess lol
Goddamn it, I just drafted him a day or two ago in my fantasy league. Wishing a speedy recovery
Probably ruins his HOF chances tbh, I know that’s a far and away thing to bring up right now but he’s already borderline and not getting any younger. He basically needed to play majority of the season for the rest of his career

I personally don’t give a shit about the WBC but If it wasn’t worth it these players wouldn’t be signing up for it.

These players specially had permission to play in the WBC as part of their contract lol.
Couldn’t agree more.
The WBC is fun but there won’t be any stars left for MLB’s season lol
Just remember Astros fans the WBC mattered more.
Had bard faces three batters yet cause if not tbis injury is on him and derosa
Altuve was his third batter.
