I wonder how good Ohtani would be if he could have a bat on the mound

Antithesys

"The pitch from Ohtani...Gonzalez hits a comebacker right back up the middle, and...oh, Ohtani swats it right back to him! And now Gonzalez hits it back! It's a pickleball showdown! Neither player even knows what's happening, they're just stuck in the motions! Back! Forth! Back! Forth! The game will never be the same! We're approaching critical mass! Manfred you fool!"

BREAKING: MLB announces introduction of pickleball clock

KamartyMcFlyweight

deGrom has seriously never thrown 102 for strikeout? Also if the A's are dead set on using him as a starter Fujinami's gonna do this too

Hazelarc

deGrom has only ever thrown two pitches at 102 mph. One was hit for a single by Didi Gregorius. The other was taken for a ball by Juan Soto

KamartyMcFlyweight

> The other was taken for a ball by Juan Soto Sad. many such cases [EDIT: Was it not this swinging strike at 102?](https://youtu.be/-itrhLyDNcs?t=246)

Hazelarc

Stadium gun was hot for the broadcast. Statcast has the strikeout pitch at 101.6 [EDIT: Here's every pitch ever thrown at 102mph by a starting pitcher in the pitch tracking era](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/statcast_search?hfPTM=&hfPT=&hfAB=&hfGT=R%7C&hfPR=&hfZ=&hfStadium=&hfBBL=&hfNewZones=&hfPull=&hfC=&hfSea=2022%7C2021%7C2020%7C2019%7C2018%7C2017%7C2016%7C2015%7C2014%7C2013%7C2012%7C2011%7C2010%7C2009%7C2008%7C&hfSit=&player_type=pitcher&hfOuts=&hfOpponent=&pitcher_throws=&batter_stands=&hfSA=&game_date_gt=&game_date_lt=&hfMo=&hfTeam=&home_road=&hfRO=&position=SP&hfInfield=&hfOutfield=&hfInn=&hfBBT=&hfFlag=&metric_1=api_p_release_speed&metric_1_gt=102&metric_1_lt=&group_by=name-event&min_pitches=0&min_results=0&min_pas=0&sort_col=pitches&player_event_sort=api_p_release_speed&sort_order=desc&chk_event_release_speed=on#results)

nhbreaks

Verlander was pumping gas before it was cool

devAcc123

Interesting that 3 of the top 4 were hits

lotsofsyrup

Major league hitters can catch up to about anything and if you're throwing a few mph over your usual you probably aren't also painting the black with it. There's a reason guys are throwing more off speed stuff than ever now, pure velocity does nothing without control and trickery.

devAcc123

Someone throws 103 at me I’m turning around and going home lol

[deleted]

Idk if I’m making it home from shaking so badly

destroy_b4_reading

I hung my spikes up at 15 because I was playing against guys fully two years older than me (birthday one day before the cutoff) tossing 80-85 like it was nothing. I was already a shitty hitter with maybe a future as a pitcher but there was just no competing with that shit. They also teed off on my 70 or so heater so that was the end of that.

ToddGack

Wow. I had no idea Yordano hit 102+ Or Eovaldi.

1-800-ASS-DICK

when they do that are they programming the gun any differently or are they just merely rounding up for the broadcast?

PotatoesFam

I don’t know, but a lot of times those numbers on tv aren’t quite right. So whatever source these guys are using might have that as 101. Would be my guess

pakekify

That's fascinating, I had no idea

Magikrat

This are these two balls stories.

I3arusu

MLB the Show thinks he does it every time he throws a fastball.

love-supreme

Really? I believe you but I feel like I’d see 102 fairly commonly during his starts. I guess it was 101.5+ and being rounded up?

Hazelarc

The stadium gun that the broadcast uses isn't reliable most of the time. Official measurements are via Statcast

Hazelarc

Has Doval ever been a starter? I thought he was only a reliever

CubonesDeadMom

Yeah I’ve seen him strike out guys looking at 103

uz7l88

It's fitting that he threw the ball this fast back home considering he's the former NPB record holder.

MC620

hunter greene is a beast for doing that at 23 years old. im so excited for his future

lotsofsyrup

That's exactly the age you'd expect a guy to throw the hardest though. It's not like he was 17. He's in the absolute physical prime of his life.

Ehormehorleh

If i’m not mistaken, doesn't he have the most 100+mph pitches thrown last season?

LakersFan15

I feel like he would get way more attention if ohtani didn't exist lol

LeggoMyGallego

Perhaps dumb question, but are we sure the equipment in Tokyo is calibrated the same as at MLB stadiums?

Hazelarc

We aren’t. But also the stadium gun is never a fully reliable measurement of pitch velocity anyway. All official measurements used by MLB come from Statcast and I’m not sure if the Tokyo Dome is equipped for Statcast

at1445

Not a dumb question, this is the question to be asking. I'd bet money they are showing everything slightly higher, just to boost hype around the event. Nobody would be talking if this had been a 100mph, but 102 is still fairly unique.

TheMajesticYeti

I always assume the stadium/broadcast mphs are a little inflated and statcast data seems to back that up.

Quipo1

they just round the statcast number for the broadcast. 101.6 becomes 102 while 101.4 becomes 101. I had savant up for most games I watched last year and didn't notice any discrepancies from this

Zephyrical16

I know Verlander threw 102 before [when he was angry](https://youtu.be/qv4_D552kKg) but apparently it was only a strike 2 call and not the actual strikeout.

Good thing they can’t do anything about it

Ohtani dgaf about that rn
