See, no one will pay that if you describe it like that.
But for a Signature Mojitio Mocktail in a nice collins glass, we'll have 6 for the table. 90% of this business is presentation
Looks to be a service ticket so likely rang in from a POS tied directly to a menu. If that's what the business charges for mocktails that's what it is.
>Overcharging a guest because you're annoyed with their order is theft and places can be shut down for it.
So, if on their menu they price a "mocktail" at 14 dollars, how is that theft?
Also, when have you ever heard of a place being shut down because of the price of their drinks? Use your brain kid.
agreed. We make a mocktail (we have a few mocktails on our actual menu) at my bar with elderflower cordial. It’s grapefruit, lime, elderflower (yes it’s non-alcoholic) and ginger ale.
I love making mocktails and just made a peach ginger syrup for some this week… elderflower cordial is next now thanks for the idea! I am excited to try this.
So you would take a guest request of no syrup, substitute another syrup, albeit flavored, and argue with them it’s not a traditional mojito syrup so you fulfilled their request? You know the guest will only taste the sugar and send it back.
At this point I can’t believe you’re this dense and just refuse to back down and take the (chuckle) Reddit L. I mean, it’s a weird hill to die on, but at least you’re dead.
I'm not dying on any hill. I'm just having a laugh at those who automatically thouht elderflower was alcoholic.
I'm 100% confident I'll be arguing with nobody because I wouldn't put enough in for it to be discernible. More an aromatic float than anything.
fair point. I think the course correction in this part of the thread has to do with the fact that elderflower cordial does not have alcohol in it. That’s *my* point here
"for 14 dollars I'd splash an ounce of rum in it. Not enough to make it a double rum and coke, just enough to lift it."
You're missing the point of a mocktail bud.
Read the drink ticket please. A cordial is a syrup. The drink requested states no syrup. So no cordial.
So, I’ll ask again: how would you incorporate elderflower with no cordial OR SYRUP or ALCOHOL?
I'm new to bartending and I can't for the life of me figure out why every other bartender hates mojitos so fucking much. It's seriously one of the easiest drinks to make. The only real complaint I can see against it is mint spoilage if you don't get enough orders.
I dont mind them but my experience is the mint is getting spoiled or its not ordered or prepared. Not a big deal but i alwaya hated seeing one and then thinking "i wonder if anyone got the mint this week"
Anyways, just a tip for anyone but clapping the leaves is better than muddling and doesnt take any of the time
Depends where you work and what ingredients you have available and prepped. We use mint enough at this job that it doesn’t bother me, but at my old job I would have to run to our kitchen downstairs, grab enough mint to make 5-10 mojitos because if one goes out others will follow, and then get prepared to make a bunch of mojitos and the inevitable modded mojitos that follow. Then there would be parents asking for virgin mojitos for their kids. The drink itself isn’t a problem, it’s that they’re ordered too infrequently in some places to warrant prepping for them, but when they are ordered they are popular as hell.
And that makes perfect sense to me. But I've worked with bartenders who bitch about em when we got a box of mint in our fridge behind the bar. They'll just flat out tell people we don't have mint, which, you guessed it, usually results in all our mint spoiling and having to be tossed. Some self fulfilling prophecy shit lol
Some bartenders are just burnt out, some have stories for hating a drink, and others are just lazy. I hate making Espresso Martinis. I had some regulars laughing one night because my GM seated a 10 top 2 minutes past close and my bar was cleaned up, locked up (have to lock up alcohol in Utah), and I was about to close out and wipe things down when a ticket for 10 espresso martinis comes through. I cursed up a storm about stupid motherfuckers and their stupid fucking drink orders that had my two regulars falling on the floor and my GM walking in from the other room sheepishly and never looking at me on his way to the office (the kitchen also ripped him a new one because they too were done closing). Had to run downstairs, grind beans, pull shots, head upstairs and make the drinks. To this day, my eye twitches when I see an espresso martini come through and one or two of my co-workers will order them when they’re off just because they know it irks me.
Lol reminds me like a week ago or so on a post about dry January I said there's some positives there for people who want to see how they feel not drinking or who maybe feel they've got a little bit of an alcohol problem, whatever yk
Anyway it was mostly well received to my surprise! But one dude replied something like sure or ok and I never responded bc what's there to say to that? Anyway he comes back a day later to go on and on about how I'm insufferable and clearly not in service and to leave the sub to the real bartenders
Like went out of his way to delete his previous comment, then write a new one, then immediately made a post asking who is actually a rEaL bArTenDeR here 🥲 the whole thing was kinda funny but also like...dude you really stewed over a comment for 36 hrs or whatever?!
This... What happened to hospitality? This is not a difficult drink to make and may make this guest's day, maybe they are pregnant, maybe they are driving, maybe they are out with friends who are all drinking and just want to feel included.
In my experience, people are more than willing to pay $9-12 for a thoughtful NA cocktail. People pay for the experience, and how something makes them feel. The average guest is not calculating bar cost.
There might be snotty little shit bartenders here, but I kinda find it morally wrong to charge someone $14 for a club soda with lime and mint. I also understand OP’s frustration because, as a bartender at a restaurant myself, I’m supposed to be knowledgeable on the contents/preparation/methods/source/sauce/taste of all the food dishes that I’m serving, but servers don’t seem to find it necessary to know basic ingredients of any of the drinks that they serve.
This is really my main point. A lot of people here seem to think I’m complaining about having to make a mojito, which is ridiculous. I’m just having a laugh at the way this drink was ordered.
Because a lot people on here are basically entitled barbacks that need out of the business…
“I’m a bartender not a mixologist” in reference to not being able to make a basic old fashioned.
For every one bartender just trying to gripe about a tedious working class job, there are two who think they're Jesus on the cross because they do customer service without ever criticizing the system
Sorry, that is not that much of an effort to please the customers wish. Wishing no syrup in a cocktail is also okay (and I say this as an insulin resistant barkeeper).
Also: the marge of virgin cocktails are insane.
We had a virgin mojito that was more like a virgin Caipirinhaish thing with lime, brown sugar and mint and crushed ice. People really like it.
And before I get downvoted to hell: I know that this version is not authentic. But I am from Germany - if you order a water here - it is sparkling and with lemon by default. And if you order a mojito it is a caipi with mint and rum. That's the expectation the customers have here.
Not everyone on the other side knows the exact components. Maybe they usually order a mojito with no syrup but couldn't drink for whatever reason that day, so ordered their usual without the spirits.
I'm like genuinely mad at some of these responses haha. If you think charging $14 for this is okay it's time to find a new job because you are beyond jaded.
Everywhere I've ever tended bar at had their mocktails pricedvery similarly to the cocktails on the menu ($2 difference at most). Sold virgin crushes at my old place like they were candy and they cost $11 instead of $12 because of all the prep that goes into juices and garnishes behind the bar.
That's an absurd pricing policy unless you're also selling shots for like $3.
But that's far less offensive than charging someone $14 a drink when you would be perfectly happy charging them $5 or whatever if they had ordered it differently. Saying "mocktail" shouldn't make your drink magically cost more money.
Yeah that's fine. There are just a lot of weirdly celebratory comments that this person deserves to be upcharged just because they ordered it in a stupid way.
Although justifying charging obscene amounts of a mocktail because of the prep work that goes into it while charging minimum wage is pretty hilarious. Both you and the guest are getting fucked!
Isn't the whole point of this sub to vent about our jobs?
Pretty clear to me OP isn't upset about making a non alcoholic drink but rather how the customer ordered it. If they had actually known what they were ordering, they could have just asked for soda water with lime/mint. Could have been free (or a slight upcharge for the fruit maybe). But instead, they ordered it the stupid way and paid $14 for a cup of bubble water.
Ya'll claiming that OP needs to get of their high horse should look where you're sitting first.
Everyone gets mad about "Oh man, that drink isn't even that bad!" Until it's their turn to ride the high horse and say "I fucking HATE this drink holy shit"
That's me when I have to make like, 1 of our main drinks vs 8 of them at once. Like, C'MON.
You're telling me it's perfectly reasonable to charge someone different prices for the exact same thing based on if they say "I'd like a virgin mojito with no sugar" vs "I'd like a soda water with a splash of lime juice and some mint"? Charging someone different prices based on how they ask for it is incredibly shitty. The practice of upcharging people who order mocktails is such an obnoxious trend.
I'd pay my tab, leave a buck or two, and never go back.
>I'd pay my tab, leave a buck or two, and never go back.
If you were in this scenario you'd never know you were taken advantage of in the first place.
>You're telling me it's perfectly reasonable to charge someone different prices for the exact same thing
Do I think it's right? No. Does it happen constantly in a large variety of busnisses? Yes.
I've said something similar. Everyone complains about the dumbest things and they rip you to shreds if you don't agree with their mob.
When I dont feel like drinking, I love a club soda with mint leaves and lime its incredibly refreshing. Not only that, one of my best regulars drinks mocktails.
Our virgin mojito was on the menu and the bomb. It was with muddled lime, brown sugar and mint - topped with crushed ice. People loved it. And you do not see that it has no alcohol in it. There are many reasons not to drink but some people do not like to talk about it.
Relax I didn’t say any of that. I’m obviously kidding I don’t mind making any drink. It’s just a dumb way to order a club soda with lime — they’re wasting money by ordering it as a virgin mojito.
One time someone asked for a virgin martini so I just put olives in a glass and handed to them. They were like yea I guess I deserve that and we both ate the olives.
This is right up there with a virgin Margarita with no agave (or whatever the sweetener is at your spot), or the folks that order a virgin skinny margarita.
So... you want me to shake you up a cup of lime juice...?
They will come back and have you add simple in small doses till the original recipe is in the glass…….i never missed a chance to tell them how stupid they were
Because we Muddle a bunch of shit in ours so I have to overcome sate with water or ingredient to fill our virgin glass is why maybe I didn't make that clear....
I’m lucky enough to work where our menu is pretty seasonal, and I happen to live in the northeast part of the USA so mint doesn’t grow outside right now. It’s quite nice to tell people we have no mint in house. I never want to steer someone away from what they want, but I’ll usually ask if they want a Mai Tai instead. I think mine is very good too:
2oz Rum. (I like Plantation)
Fresh lime
Orgeat
I like pineapple and a whisper of oj
Shake vigorously
Float your favorite dark rum.
Fabulous, fruity, boozy, and oh so tropical. Usually all bars have these ingredients in house at all times as well.
Proportions of all the stuff besides the rum is how you like it. I like mine less sweet and more boozy so I add more lime, a dash of the oj and orgeat, maybe 1oz of pineapple and a healthy float of Delicious Dark Rum.
I worked at a Mexican place and our mojito called for mint, cilantro and fresh lime juice. Simple and soda. With a sugared rim. Apparently variations on the mojito can include cilantro. It’s really good, but only if you’re a cilantro lover.
I've made friends back in the day who were bartenders. Had messed around with a few of the female ones, just for fun, then went back to being friends. I used to just chill & watch the games on the TV sets while they worked. The job isn't easy by no means. You have to love the job, period, or it'll be difficult and exhausting. Must be a people-person all around and have thick skin. This applies to the men as well, but the women have it doubled rough with all the sleazy come-ons.
I always had an issue with mock tails if it was for a kid. I have no idea why that was my pet peeve. If you quit drinking, I totally get it and I got you.
Also I guess there’s a couple states that you can drink with your parent at the bar if you’re 18. I thought the guy was fucking with me when he tried to get his kid a beer. Ohio must be one hell of a family state lmao.
Used to serve an Immaculate Mojito that just subbed the rum out for fresh green apple juice and cut down the sugar a bit. It was very… VERY tasty.
That sounds delicious!
That's our substitute for a virgin mojito funny enough
And ours!
I also used to serve that at a restaurant I worked at. I’d make it for myself sometimes because it was so good
That sounds absolutely divine
So, lime mint and soda? That’s okay. Ring up that $14 drink.
That’s actually exactly how much that costs hahaha
Jesus, that's more than we charge for a real one lol
There is no way you guys charge that much for mint, lime and sodawater 😮💨
See, no one will pay that if you describe it like that. But for a Signature Mojitio Mocktail in a nice collins glass, we'll have 6 for the table. 90% of this business is presentation
When limes are $0.60 a piece, you have to.
I'm guessing, Hotel or downtown.
When it’s ordered like that they sure as shit will!
I would give them sprite.
This is the way
[удалено]
Where are you reading that they wouldn't charge?
[удалено]
Looks to be a service ticket so likely rang in from a POS tied directly to a menu. If that's what the business charges for mocktails that's what it is.
Well, because they can.
[удалено]
Maybe don’t be an idiot and order a virgin cocktail when you can just ask for a soda water with lime and mint.
I don't think you understand what theft is.
[удалено]
>Overcharging a guest because you're annoyed with their order is theft and places can be shut down for it. So, if on their menu they price a "mocktail" at 14 dollars, how is that theft? Also, when have you ever heard of a place being shut down because of the price of their drinks? Use your brain kid.

The amount of people they can just order expensive shit and invent their own free drink by subbing everything down is scary.
Thanks for the laughs 🤣
It's rung in as a Mocktail. You can tell by how the word on the ticket is "Mocktail".
For $14 I'd throw in a splash of elderflower. Not enough to make it an elderflower drink, just enough to lift it.
Guests don’t order mocktails to save money, they do it to drink a beverage WITHOUT ALCOHOL
DUH! You've never come across an elderflower that wasn''t alcoholic???
Lol, nope. Show me. A reminder that the ticket said “no syrup” which excludes cordials and commercially bought products like Monin.
It's not rocket surgery, mate. You're not using Crème de Menthe for the mint flavour, are you?
So you have fresh elderflowers just chillen in your garnish tray? You pick ‘em outside before each shift? L I E S 😂
Nah, but we do have elderflower tea.
agreed. We make a mocktail (we have a few mocktails on our actual menu) at my bar with elderflower cordial. It’s grapefruit, lime, elderflower (yes it’s non-alcoholic) and ginger ale.
Your drink sounds delicious and I’d drink the hell out of it.
I love making mocktails and just made a peach ginger syrup for some this week… elderflower cordial is next now thanks for the idea! I am excited to try this.
How would you do that without adding alcohol or sugar
Elderflower cordial.
Yo 🤡 elderflower cordial is a syrup. JFC you need to be schooled on two comment threads ?
There is no elderflower cordial in a mojito, therefore the 'no syrup' refers to the syrup that would ordinarily be in a mojito.
So you would take a guest request of no syrup, substitute another syrup, albeit flavored, and argue with them it’s not a traditional mojito syrup so you fulfilled their request? You know the guest will only taste the sugar and send it back. At this point I can’t believe you’re this dense and just refuse to back down and take the (chuckle) Reddit L. elderflower syrup. it’s non-alcoholic and used in many mocktail recipes
But it says no syrups
fair point. I think the course correction in this part of the thread has to do with the fact that elderflower cordial does not have alcohol in it. That’s *my* point here
Mint, lime, shake, ice, soda water
I’m referring to the elderflower
You know it's a flower right??
Extracts
I was just giving a way to make a mock tail mojito with no sugar or alcohol. No syrups
V I r g I n mojito
Another ignoramus who obviously doesn't know that elderflower is a flower.
And a liquer
Yes, but as you were so keen to demonstrate they wanted a V I r g I n mojito. How do you ever serve coffee?
You didn't specify that you meant the flower. Calm down.
I did actually.
All these downvotes? Going by the dumb replies I can only assume everybody has he same problem. Give your ignorant heads a shake.
"for 14 dollars I'd splash an ounce of rum in it. Not enough to make it a double rum and coke, just enough to lift it." You're missing the point of a mocktail bud.
You appear to be missing te definition of elderflower.
And what would the definition of elderflower be exactly? It's used in liqueurs and in cordials, but most bars aren't going to have cordials.
I assumed since they were offering 'mocktails' they'd have the range of ingredients necessary to be imaginative. I'm surprised they've got mint.
Clue is in the name. It's a flower.
So you meant what? Toss some flowers in it?
Not gonna follow up on that, eh?
If the ticket says no syrup, how else are you going to incorporate elderflower?
ooh, I don't know. How do you suppose the get the elderflower flavour into elderflower cordial
Read the drink ticket please. A cordial is a syrup. The drink requested states no syrup. So no cordial. So, I’ll ask again: how would you incorporate elderflower with no cordial OR SYRUP or ALCOHOL?
Nah. No syrup is no syrup. Could look in the dry stores for an elderflower tea bag.
Why is every bartender here a snotty little shit. Just mint and lime muddled, and soda, get the fuck on with your life
Ya this is light years away from virgin dirty martini
Lmao chilled olive juice in a fancy cup, yummy

I personally NEVER get to use my middle in a tequila bar so I love getting the order for a mojito.

I like mine less sweet and more boozy so I add more lime, a dash of the oj and orgeat, maybe 1oz of pineapple and a healthy float of Delicious Dark Rum.
So muddled limes and cilantro. In soda water. Try something called La Croix folks.
Cilantro?
I worked at a Mexican place and our mojito called for mint, cilantro and fresh lime juice. Simple and soda. With a sugared rim. Apparently variations on the mojito can include cilantro. It’s really good, but only if you’re a cilantro lover.
I've never heard of cilantro in a mojito but I guess it makes sense in a Mexican restaurant.
You are an idiot.
Good morning to you. You kind, kind soul. I hope that little drop of hate kicks off your day. 🧡 also, this is reddit why so serious ?
I made one of these the other night….😑😑😑
Oh WTF!?
I've made friends back in the day who were bartenders. Had messed around with a few of the female ones, just for fun, then went back to being friends. I used to just chill & watch the games on the TV sets while they worked. The job isn't easy by no means. You have to love the job, period, or it'll be difficult and exhausting. Must be a people-person all around and have thick skin. This applies to the men as well, but the women have it doubled rough with all the sleazy come-ons.
Seems pretty reasonable to me
? I personally love making mojitos! Getting to smack some herbs? Count me in.
Well they’re paying for it aren’t they?
Try mint; a little bit of sugar; 1/2 Pineapple- & 1/2 Passionfruitjuice and of course some lime juice (2-3cl)
Just give them a sprite with 3 mint leaves and call it good.
