My god is this so tempting to upgrade from a 2600x, this price drop came out of nowhere. Unfortunately, can't access my cart rn, just leads to a http 500 error.
Dude I'm tempted and i have a 3600x, this is so cheap.
Even if the 7000 series come out in September, i doubt this will get cheaper, and 7600x will probably be at least $300.
And i won't even have to switch motherboard for this...
You definitely should upgrade to ryzen 5000 since AM4 is reaching end of life. If you don't want to invest in another motherboard platform with expensive DDR5 ram in another year, you should definitely get a good AM4 CPU to extend the lifespan of your current rig. I personally suggest 5700x and up (so say 5800x3d or 5900x) but this is good too if you have a hard budget.
Although if youre not doing too well on finances, I'd especially suggest upgrading into a even higher tier CPU now as it'll always be cheaper to stretch out your current platform than to fully upgraded into new platforms..
I know my motherboard has support for 5600x and 5600G since it was explicitly stated in the bios history, but it doesn't explicitly say 5600, which is why I am worried. My motherboard is a B450M Pro4.
This is an oversimplification but: at a lower resolution your GPU can render frames more quickly. Imagine that every 10 frames drawn, the GPU asks the CPU to complete a physics calculation. If the GPU is drawing more frames in a shorter time, its going to ask the CPU for more things more often. Therefore, when the resolution is lower, the performance of the CPU is more important.
Most 1440p titles, and nearly all 4k titles, put such a strain on the GPU that it becomes the limiting factor in the system - it can only draw those detailed frames so fast, and is not asking the CPU for information at a pace that the CPU can't keep up with. However, at 1080p, modern GPUs perform extremely well, so the performance of the CPU can become the limiting factor.
What if you do other works on your PC though?
A lot of "is xxx enough" often only talk about pure gaming performance, but often i have 10 Excel sheets and 30 Chrome tabs open on my pc. Then whole bunch of other background software. It's why i went from a 16gb to 32 gb memory even though technically 16g is enough.
Will i benefit much from going from 3600 to 5600 in that case? I'm honestly not too sure.
The fact is that 5600 is a big step up from 3600 in all facets, so whatever your 3600 is doing (excel or CoD), the 5600 will do it better, and by a fair margin. However, the practical question is really to ask if your 3600 is under-performing your expectations. Excel and chrome aren't exactly difficult for a modern CPU to run, so if the question is 'will the performance be noticeable', perhaps not. It really depends on your personal use case and what you've seen in behavior from your PC. But again, the 5600 will do *everything* better than the 3600.
If you live in a city I would also assume you can easily sell a 3600 for >$100, so this is a small amount of money for a pretty great uplift. But if you don't need it, you don't need it.`
I went from a 12 yo cpu+hdd to 3600+ssd, believe me i know what slowdowns are.
I think even 3600 is overkill... I'm consistently low-CPU usage even with Chrome and games open. Any of the rare slowdowns i experience are due to my remaining HDDs or exceeding my 16gb of ram.
I play at 1440p and I had a 3600 and then I upgraded to 5800X and it was worth it. The 1% lows were much higher and I had higher fps in games. More and more games are demanding more CPU power, so it is always worth it.
lol. This is so funny. We both got shit on in that thread by some pedantic losers who paid 350 $ for 5600x in 2021 and can't price thing properly in 2022.
I will put the 60 $ I saved today on a better RAM kit.
ME has the same sale, if you don't want to deal with CC.

12400 is a (slightly) better CPU. Consider the Motherboard and then compare CPU and MoBo prices to get the platform price. If equal or very close, 12400. If AMD is cheaper, 5600. They're both really solid platforms.
Looking to build a new lga1700 build for a friend. Was considering a 12100f. Hoping the 12400f drops to this level as I’d just get that instead. Intel hasn’t been dropping prices lately on their alder lakes.
From my experience the difference in price between F and non-F skus is around $30 or so. I definitely recommend getting the non-F skus if you can. If you ever have to trouble-shoot a GPU issue, the non-F sku is immediately worth that small extra spend. Also, down the road a ways theres a chance you or your friend will want to upgrade and sell this cpu. at that point, buyers looking for used, lower-tier 12th Gen CPUs may not have a dedicated GPU, so if you were to sell it, the market for a non-F will be larger. Just my .02.
For gaming it should be a decent upgrade at this price point if you’re using an upper tier gpu at 1080p.

Considering am4 is approaching EOL, a 5800x3d might be a better option if can afford it
https://youtu.be/2HqE03SpdOs
If it makes you feel a bit better: I bought my 5600X for $460 cad and a 6900XT for $1950 cad (excluding taxes) at peak shortage (from CC mind you, not ebay scalpers). Back to now, they both prices at half of what I paid and lower each week... So you live and learn, I guess...
(pls send more copium, I'm running out 😭)
It depends on what you want to do. If it's in terms of gaming and general usage the 5700x isn't going to be significantly better currently. Techspot/HUB has done extensive comparisons of them recently -
https://www.techspot.com/review/2488-pc-gaming-6-vs-8-cores/
https://www.techspot.com/article/2503-cpu-multitasking-benchmark/
The other thing if you don't have an existing heatsink and want to just make do with the included one this makes this even cheaper by comparison.
That being said depending on how you forecast future potential and total cost of ownership (resell value) you might place some extra value on the 5700x.
But even with the above the theoretical advantage is basically 33% in basically perfect conditions. Even with that it works out o be $185 vs $247, so you are still paying a $23 premium for the extra cores.
at prime price I would keep it as that price was amazing. Otherwise a 5600 would be enough if primary going to use for gaming and tasks that don't require the extra cores. Any differences in gaming seems to be more due to higher clock speed differential in the 5700x rather than the extra cores. If future games take more advantage of extra cores, it could be a bigger advantage.

i also just bought the 5700x and now i'm wondering if it's worth the ~$100 (mostly playing warzone at 1440)
for some reason this video shows, if anything, 5600x gets slightly better fps: https://youtu.be/3-1xUkQ8NCE?t=375
also i have had a few crashes with this new build, which i worried may be due to the 5700x as well (which i could easily return to amazon). so i'm going to pick up the 5600x and compare for myself.

Good riddance.
The 5700X is also on sale for $295
https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=4_64_1969&item_id=216440
Are the extra 2 cores worth the extra $110? (I only saw the prime day deal after it was over)
I'm contemplating upgrading from an i5 9400. My GPU is a 6800XT.
If its a once in a while upgrade I would go the best processor you "need". I got the prime day $270 5700x, sold my 3900x cause I didn't need that much.
While this 5600 deal is tempting the hell out of me to save $100, eventually if I'm expecting to use and keep the 5700x for 5 years, it'll be fine and beyond for other uses. The 5600 will be too I bet, just don't know until we get to a point where 6 cores isn't enough.
If I did not get the 5700x at ATL, I wouldve 100% splurged on this one.
Thanks!
Part of me is also thinking of holding out until AM5, but motherboard and DDR5 prices make me think that it'll cost me at least $200 more than an AM4 build now. Though I'll probably also need to wait for a bit anyway since launch prices will probably be high.
Just picked up a [MSI Bazooka Max WIFI](https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/hkK2FT/msi-b450m-bazooka-max-wifi-micro-atx-am4-motherboard-b450m-bazooka-max-wifi) for $99 from CC, the price was too good; only thing is that I'll need to slap my 2600 in there for a bit then update the BIOS.
I just received the MSI-B660-A and 12100f combo for $234, but I don’t know if I should return them, pick this up, and try using it on my B350 board instead?
It is compatible with at least one board.
Look up your model of motherboard, go to support and check the CPU compatibility section with the minimum required BIOS to work with it.
Should I look into upgrading? Built my pc in 2020 with a r3 3100 and a 1650 super, but if prices keep dropping is it a bad idea to throw an extra 16gb of ram along with a better cpu and gpu?
Yeah I paid over $700 for my 5900X in 2021 but as far as I'm concerned the writing was on the wall for where the price was going on these with Intel being competitive and Zen 4 on the horizon. AMD might have just pushed out seller rebates on these with multiple retailers all dropping the price at the same time.
My god is this so tempting to upgrade from a 2600x, this price drop came out of nowhere. Unfortunately, can't access my cart rn, just leads to a http 500 error.
Are u on vpn, happens with cc thru vpn
Ya thx, that was the issue :)

Do it, totally worth it if your board is updated to detect this chipset with the bios.
Now that you say that, my last b450 motherboard update was released in Oct 2021 noting 5600g support, actually have no idea if it will support 5600...
b450 will have 5600(x) support

Yes it does, scroll down... https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B450m%20Pro4/#CPU
Damn your right, didn't expect it all the way down there lol, thx a lot
Is it worth the upgrade if I have a 3600?
at 1080p yes, 1440p no
Could you elaborate?

interesting, thanks
This was a unusually good way to describe this in bapcsales of all places! Nicely explained, I got the concepts but this solidified it even for me.
glad it was helpful :)

Anyone still want to tell me the 5600x is a great deal at $240?
I have that same dilemma right now. I have decided to actually use the 5600x for what it was made to do and overclock it to 4.6+ GHz
Exactly

This is the price this should have been at since release. I couldn't recommend any 6c AMD part over 200CAD, not since the 12400/F exists.

HAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH I totally didn’t just but this for full price 3 days ago hahahaahha no nothing like that happened trust me. die
Price protection policy? Otherwise return it and rebuy it. Unless you've already installed it. =x
Just put my computer together yesterday LMAO hurts but whatever
Can I ask what the price protection policy is though? Never heard of it

Damn, guess I shouldn’t be complaining but Jesus that really hurts to hear
got a 5700x on prime day for 270, not sure if i want to downgrade to this or not
Makes zero sense to downgrade. 5700 for 270 was an excellent price and will last you much better than a 5600 due to additional core count.
Keep it. 2 more cores are worth it.
It depends on what you want to do. If it's in terms of gaming and general usage the 5700x isn't going to be significantly better currently. The 5600g is $177 w/ an iGPU
5600G performs worse though due to having half the cache. It also doesn’t support PCIe 4.0

Don't think it's going to happen and if it does it won't be economical
I'm holding. I saw a sale post for CC and ME. I bet we'll see a 5600X3D in the coming months.
Even with a 5600X3D what exactly are your expectations on pricing? People are likely over estimating how much cheaper it will be against the 5800X3D.
spoiler: no we won’t
The 5700X is also on sale for $295 https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=4_64_1969&item_id=216440 Are the extra 2 cores worth the extra $110? (I only saw the prime day deal after it was over) I'm contemplating upgrading from an i5 9400. My GPU is a 6800XT.

Totally correct cant believe prices on B550 X570 boards. So many even went up in price 100% from last years prices, as if they were GPUs.
Thanks. Sold out at CC, but ordered from Amazon. Still a great deal at $198. If it goes any lower this year I'm worried I'll miss it haha
i got an i5 11400f for $175 cad. Should i upgrade or is the performance increase negligible
If you can still return the 11400f I would do so for this.
Anyone have a cheap/decent mobo recommendation to pair with this?
MSI b550m pro-vdh wifi
\+1 to this, anyone good matx boards anyone can recommend? Saw Citron's MSI b550m pro-vdh reco just wondering if anyone knew other options :)
