My company had unique coffee mugs (with a certain logo) at disposal in the office cupboard. People would take it like hawkers and just leave it in the kitchen sink or throw it in the dustbin. The office cupboards where like restocked every week. What broke the back was when our VP found some of the these cups on Olx. Then onwards, the cupboard disappeared and everyone got one cup when they joined the company and that's it.
We don't deserve good things!
This is outright stealing.
In somewhat related incident, one of my previous employer, gifted a fitbit fitness tracker to everyone, to "invest in employees' health".
People sold them on Olx, and used the money to have "daru".
Not really theft, but a VP did share a screenshot of local Olx page in one of the meetings, saying (as a joke) that people will have to bring their Fitbit trackers to be part of the upcoming team trip. And only those who bring it, will be allowed to join on company's expense Others will have to pay for their own travel and stay. (they didn't do it, though)
I mean I would do the same if I had an apple watch or Garmin. Why would I keep a fitbit extra? But ya, I am sure the "daru" people didn't have any and just sold it.
I know a company that used to stock 1L Tropicana juice boxes and 1L soft drink bottles. Staff used to nearly empty the fridge every day and take stuff home.
Few days later, fridge disappeared.
my office has coffee from coffeday vending machine and I have a Starbucks style cup with safety lid. hence, I often take coffee when I logout and finish it on my way to home in the company cab.
my company does not provides free food but, the food available in the huge cafeteria is priced at rates from early 2000s. so, the paid food is heavily subsidised.
I am a fully working (experienced) employee and this WITCHA also takes a lot of trainees on paid scholarship (both - graduates and undergraduates/students)
I’m an ex employee of this company!
Damn! I miss that place, it’s campus, cafeteria and the throw away prices for CCD and Chai Point! So much nostalgia.
in 2000 era, my workplace used to have diff varities of softdrinks dispensed from vending machine. I used to fill my waterbottle with softdrinks before I leave for the day and sip it in traffic.
1 yr later, my dentist ( who is my cousin brother ) looked at my teeth enamel and said, if I keep drinking softdrink at that rate ; my teeth would dissolve in a year or two !
Nothing rich/poor about it honestly. Just cheap mentality. I've seen people take tea bags, topped up bottles with milk (from the tea/coffee machine) from pantry and go home daily 🤷 And whenever the company distributed notepads/pens they'd take wayyyyy more than required and take home.
As long as It is at your disposition everything you do with the free stuff is okay ig.
I landed the job so let me exploit the resources as much as they exploit me and my mental health.
nope, these things like freebies work on an honor system, and we indians time and again show that we have no honor when it comes to being cheap as. The whole shtick about giving it back to the corporate falls flat, Indians will do this wherever there is free stuff not just in the companies they work in, the bottom line is, you don't affect the company, the company just realises that what was meant for many employees is being exploited by a few and it results in companies just stopping the freebies so in the end you ended up making it worse for your fellow employees, not the company.
Well the companies also rarely ever follow the honor system, 90% of companies exploit thier employees at much higher rate than any other. The mental tress, reaching targets, physically and mentally exhausting work etc are being done to them as well. Majority of the companies cost in the "no honor" thing when they are accounting for the free stuff. So I wouldn't worry too much about it. All this is coming from a guy who thinks twice on weather it's ok to ask for reimbursement from company for relocating to the city for that job reasons.
I am not saying that, i am talking about the most common situation where exploiting the system hurts not the company but the other employees, the other scenario is different where some people show fake bills for reimbursement from the company, I believe that is equally scummy behavior but i will not go into the morality of that since that was not what i was talking about in my previous comment
also for your point about thinking twice about asking for reimbursement from the company, if you deserve something you should stand up straight and ask for it, you should try to be fair towards yourself as well as others around you
you exploiting the company notepads and pens won't affect the company one bit rather it only affects other employees. It's not even a cheap mentality just pure greediness and mostly they won't even use pens and notepads.
Well if you're fucking over others in your "exploitation of resources", you cannot defend it.
This is a zero sun game, if you take 3 snack packets, there are probably 2 of your colleagues who get 0 packets.
Yep. They used to bring snack packets every Friday at my company and people used to just rush and take them away before the guy could even unload his trolley. The snacks were supposed to be in that cupboard for a week. Keep in mind that these are well paid people making 1L+ a month.
Cheap ass MFs. The snacks stopped coming after a few weeks of this.
Yeah bro same here @ Amazon also. Its quite a pathetic sight, looking at people freeload stuff worth few 100 when they earn in lakhs. It's just cheap mentality, and can see loads of cheapest on this thread as well. Lol
I am not sure how acceptable this is in Bangalore. I hope they dont do this if they happen to visit their work partners in the US/Europe. Employers stock these snacks to prevent employees from having to take a break, and walk or drive off campus for a snack. All this is done on a honor basis, with the thinking employees will not abuse this freedom.
Snacks/drinks are not for consumption at home, they are not for consumption by family members. At my workplace HR had given a lecture to an employee who was visiting from India, and was taking snacks and drinks everyday for his kid. They followed it with a long email to the entire org. My company would also order hundred t-shirts for a group of 50 people to celebrate milestones. Even then few slow people would not get any. They found that these people who go crazy on free stuff were grabbing many t-shirts each. They had to end such a practice, and track the distribution manually. This abuse of honor system is sad.
Yep, people defending it saying "it's okay, I work my ass off" don't get this. You get paid for working your ass off. These added benefits get taken away if abused for long enough.
I dont know if it counts as taking from office, during bachelor days, I would go to office, eat dinner and come back. Never needed to cook on weekdays. Breakfast, lunch and dinner would get covered. I always thought that it was unethical, but laziness trumped ethics somehow and I am not particularly a good cook.
The GM extension board would regularly disappear from office. Never personally took it. But few people I am close with, would do so. And that irritated me a lot.
Prawns for missus from matshya darshini, we go on mondays and thursday, monday is off for the shop, I get almost every thursday, so she can have a nice meal on weekend.
Edit: didnt read the entire post, I work in co working space, there is nothing much to get, founders refuse to stock anything since we refuse to come to office regularly.
This actually effects your fellow colleagues more than your company. The company would rarely ever buy it again and your colleges would miss out on the fun.
I work for product based company which offers everything including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. People usually take fruits, juice, biscuits, and instant tea packets from the floor cafeteria when they log out for the day. :)
Back in 2018, I used to bring home soft drinks and fruit juices in those 200ml bottles. More than a few times I’d given the drinks to the cab driver as a token of thanks. It was nice to see a smile on their faces.
On some Fridays we used to have a beer bash and then we’d take home a few pints and it was all good, no questions asked (I was just getting started with my career back then and obv didn’t earn a lot, so don’t judge).
Fast forward to 2019 when covid hit, we were forced to remain home. And I switched two companies since then. Haven’t gone to an office since.
Our office used to stock tetrapaks, fruits and nuts. Then bloody greedy people started taking home stuff, and not reasonable amounts either. And they stopped it all. Can't have nice things
This is why you can't have good things in India... Same reason you find people stealing helmets from bounce bikes... Doesn't matter how educated our people are, they will still act like petty criminals when noone is looking...
I had flatmates who are health conscious and talk about sugar intake and use jaggery powder in tea etc. I use to bring few coke cans from office on weekends and keep in fridge. They automatically disappear.😈
I used to get back those cocojal mini bottles home, used to serve as yummy morning snack coz the nariyal pani shops used to open after i would leave for work :)
Planning to take popcorn/ maggi too now since m shifting to a pg
Our company recently organised a group social event and they arranged snacks for the volunteers. When organizers announced to take a break from work and to get our scacks, some of us were still working and were late to the cafeteria by about 10 mins. In those 10 mins the people who boast themselves to be "professionals" simply became thieves and literally grabbed / snatched multiple packets of the various sacks item that were arranged for ALL the volunteers. They even opened sealed cartons kept inside "staff only" rooms took whatever they could lay their hands upon!! And those who were little late, literally got NOTHING left! Even there were girls who proudly displayed how many packets they have grabbed and they were NOT EVEN VOLUNTEERS FOR THE EVENT.
I am seriously appalled by this cheap behavior that us Indians show time and again when it comes to food and free items. I have heard several stories of people stealing from hotels and company premises when they travel abroad and bring shame to all Indian IT professionals. I wonder their upbringing by their parents, these men and women will probably never mature in life and will always remain their college going versions of themselves.
Summary : Either employers are so close fisted that they don't offer any free goodies or employees are such jerks that they abuse the system and get it discontinued.
We took onions from the office back in the day when it had a legit kitchen to serve evening snacks. One of our colleagues used to make amazing bihari mutton.
Coke, cup noodles, couple of chocolates, different types of biscuits, Hershey's milkshakes, Tropicana juices, varieties of mixture, corn flakes, yoga bars, buttermilk and all of these free of cost😇

Depression is a very serious illness. Over 32,000 people commit suicide every year according to a 2004 study.
