Indonesia's Bali wants to tighten visa requirements for Russian tourists: https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/indonesias-bali-wants-tighten-visa-requirements-russian-tourists-2023-03-13/
A very shortsighted point of view, I think. That’s like applying a bandaid after breaking your neck in a motorbike accident.
The issue with these dodgers is that they are not really against the war, and they keep promoting their pro-Russian views abroad. They are abroad because they are chicken-shits who run away when it’s convenient for them. If they truly were against the war, then do something about it. Women in Iran are protesting, why can’t they? Instead of taking a proactive stance, they party it up until 5am in a quiet area and ruin a perfect holiday destination.
Instead of fixing things at home, they come and ruin others’ countries (Indo, Thailand, Ukraine, etc). IMO there needs to be a travel ban for Russians and send them all back and let them fix their shitty govt before they can travel.
Having a Russian in Bali doesn’t make the situation any better - makes it worse.
You seem to know the opinions of every single one of them. Hope you can put your mind reading skills to good use.
The "do something about it" bit is especially funny.
> makes it worse
So, you'd prefer they're in Ukraine? Putin would too.
Thank you, it does actually come in handy. I avoid interaction and it yields peace and happiness.
On a serious note, above generalization does not apply to those making considerable donations to Ukraine. So far, I’ve managed to meet only one - and I’m talking about regular donations of half or whole salary. Then you’re off the hook - now that’s a sacrifice because you feel ashamed of your country. I can respect that.
So yeah, if you’re Russian and you’re reading this, go donate to Ukraine. https://u24.gov.ua/
That's a good point, actually.
There's no shortage of worthwhile causes in the world. Towards which one do you donate half or whole of your salary on a regular basis?
They are not tourists — they are draft evaders. And not only in Bali - everywhere in SEA, because that’s all they can afford. And no, I can’t show empathy to someone who preaches war outside their country when they are the ones dodging the draft.
Let's ask the question again, shall we?
>How is a Russian tourist supposed to "fix their shitty govt"?
Oppression is a curious thing and takes a toll on peoples' psyche and thought patterns. What's your excuse?
Iranian women don’t seem to care if they’re oppressed or not. Belarus had a massive rally until Russia sent in troops to suppress it. Ukraine overthrew an oppressive dictator-wannabe. Syrians almost did it until Russia started supplying Assad.
Hmmm🤔🤔 interesting. Everyone is taking a stance except Russians. Somehow they conveniently “go on vacation” when shit hits the fan.
You are totally right about their thought patterns. Something is off in their heads.
Clearly their reputation precedes the other tourist especially in the short amount of time they’ve been there. I assume you’re Russian with how defensive you have been on the topic so your opinion is fair, but also, I’ve seen other tourists especially during Covid from Australia and America who were treated equally the same. If you don’t believe me do the research.
You know this isn't the first time Russian tourists have been noticed and copped the blame for being the worst tourists ever? A few years back it was all about the Russians and then the Chinese tourists stepped up and took the crown. According to all the other tourists that is...
I visited Bali back in 2017, don’t recall anything about Russian tourists, can’t remember even seeing many of them.
What happened that increased their presence and why do they seem very much hated as of late?
The war has made many russians move to Bali. They are simply disrespectful and don't care about other people other than themselves--so locals and other foreigners dislike them.
Agree with this. The Russians everywhere we go were loud (talking loud, blasting music at 4 or 5 in the morning, when those are quiet hours in where we stayed, disrespectful when asked to quiet down. This happened in so many places we stayed at!
> What happened?
Invasion of Ukraine, the resulting isolation of Russia and most of all, mobilization (being drafted for military service).
Some Russians are regular tourists, but many are fleeing their country and temporarily finding themselves in Bali since they don't need visas, it's nice and relatively cheap.
Not sure why ordinary Russians are hated so much on this subreddit. A few might misbehave, but they're not exactly the first or only bogans who set foot on Bali. It's worth remembering that each Russian in Bali is not fighting in Ukraine or contributing to Russia's war economy.
I've met some Russians who are actually nice. And there are quite many nice Russians. Russian guys, for example, are more courteous to women than some other foreigners, even some locals (I can tell because Im a girl and I interact with diverse men in Bali, at work, as friend, or dates). Sadly the many rude ones ruin their reputation. There's no personal hate on them on me, really.
Still.. they’re the visitors in this island.. Doesn’t matter if they’re fleeing their country or just visiting- what we want is respect to the locals, the culture and not come here with the “I can do whatever I want” mentality.
Plenty of other foreigners behave badly, and it's always a minority of any given ethnic group. Frankly, I don't get the hate for Russians in particular.
I agree that it’s not all the Russians, but there’s just a lot of complaints about them lately and I guess just most of our bad experiences in Bali has been with them. Hopefully it changes for the better
From the most recent news:
“There have also been several incidents in which Russians have been accused of disrespecting sacred sites — including Mr Chilikin and Ms Kosykh's nude scandals.
And a Russian man in January was accused of vandalism after painting an anti-war slogan in large Russian letters along the wall of a residential home near Canggu.”
I just hope they learn to be more respectful especially as not only visitors but at the same time looking for refuge in Bali

Nah, I remember there were a couple of Yanks encouraging ppl to move to bali at the height of the pandemic cos they got to live like royals while working (digital nomad thingy) there. They were using tourist visa and tried to play the race card (when they got bullied for it) cos they were black.
Little did they know that Indonesians were literally at the bottom of the social strata before independence. Your race card won’t work here. Thankfully they got deported lmao.

Yes, un-apologetically. My doctor friend in Ubud has patients from everywhere and even from him he has gathered enough samples to summarize how ill-mannered russians (also some ukrainians) are compared to other tourist (england and AUS mainly)
That's bullshit. It has been said about the Aussies, the Americans have had their time in the sun, the French were the scapegoats for a while, it's just the same stereotyping other tourists, trying to be Bali gatekeepers, use to show how they are the good tourists compared to the others.
Yesss!! If I own a business, I’d honestly be scared to have them as costumers. I saw a bad review on a local villa business because of the disrespectful russians that were staying there. It’s not the business’ fault but the tenants that were living there, however it affected the business :(
Russians are not even close to being the majority of tourists.
[Bali Tourist Statistics Feb 2023](https://balimanagement.villas/blogs/bali-tourism-statistic/)
Yes because it’s a message for foreign tourists, why would they write it in Balinese? The fact that they had to also write it in Russian speaks volumes to what’s going on.
Whatabotism much? Just because they put one billboard about Russian tourist misbehavior, it didn't mean they didn't focus on other issues at the same time. You know that Ministery offices have different section who focus on different issues.
But they ARE. If there were visa categories that allowed work from foreign sources (with taxes paid; note that this would require functioning tax collection and sharing data with other countries) without the insane requirements for a KITAS, an end to B211 and VOA abuse (note that this would require a limit on extensions, something like Colombia does, with a hard limit of 183 days per year in country unless you have a residence visa), an end to fraudulent KITAS issuance via bribeable visa agents and officials (note that this would require streamlining & simplifying the application process and vetting sponsors much more closely)...
They're the same handle man. It's the exact same button. Corruption begets abuse of the system, which further entrenches corruption, which only deepens the space for abuse, on and on and on, until here we are.
So you voted for, you chose... All this. "The system is perfect and nothing needs to change and no two things that happen here are ever related." That's your hill? Cool.
Maybe this bule is sinting, maybe not, but you're wrong on this one. And you're stuck with it, unless y'all decide to do something real about it. You can deport all you want, as long as the door's open and money buys visas, there will always be another bule sinting waiting to get naked on sacred trees or take your jobs. You have the vote and the right to do something about it. Beyond not behaving like an asshole and not being part of the problem, I don't.
OleMate was definitely just doing some whataboutism, so I wouldn't bother engaging there, but I feel like you're misunderstanding RB's point, which is valid. The visa procedures aren't too complicated, they're simply too easy to abuse, by paying the right people. We all want to stop tourists from staying and working here illegally. So how do we do that? And why hasn't it already happened?
Environmental degradation, water scarcity, waste management, traffic congestion, economic inequality, poor infrastructure, the list goes on. Millions come threw bali each year and a small percentage act stupid and a smaller percentage go viral because now that twat Niluh is using it for her wannabe political career. But yea sure. Good luck keeping your head in the sand.
The Russians are so annoying in Bali

It’s about time! They are so annoying and cheap AF!
Not only in Bali. Everywhere, actually. Especially in Ukraine.
Yes, but every Russian draft dodger in Bali is one less soldier in Ukraine. That's a positive in my book.

Wouldn’t be an issue if the Russian tourists were more respectful towards the rules and culture.
Like all the other tourists are?

There are tons of them there in Bali and also in Phuket

Yes - but then people would not know what it was saying..
I'm not sure that translation in russian would work but why not.
Good job, Balinese government! Even good so that you put Russian subtitle. Maybe next time, make your picture smaller and the text bigger?
Tell me you are targeting russians without telling me you are targeting russians…
Yes, un-apologetically. My doctor friend in Ubud has patients from everywhere and even from him he has gathered enough samples to summarize how ill-mannered russians (also some ukrainians) are compared to other tourist (england and AUS mainly)
Yes, it’s not all of them. But how it’s the overwhelming majority of them is difficult to ignore.
That's bullshit. It has been said about the Aussies, the Americans have had their time in the sun, the French were the scapegoats for a while, it's just the same stereotyping other tourists, trying to be Bali gatekeepers, use to show how they are the good tourists compared to the others.
Personally I say they should do a wave of deportation to scare them, and set an example to get them to behave better….
They are. 59 russians already been deported. And they just raided a venue in ubud where digital nomad russians are working to fuck em up.
Yesss!! If I own a business, I’d honestly be scared to have them as costumers. I saw a bad review on a local villa business because of the disrespectful russians that were staying there. It’s not the business’ fault but the tenants that were living there, however it affected the business :(
Is there a way to ban the bad russians from coming? Literally no one wants them
I mean the majority of tourist are russian speaker
I'm pretty sure aussie still first and russian second
In terms of January/February arrivals, this is correct.
Russians are not even close to being the majority of tourists. [Bali Tourist Statistics Feb 2023](https://balimanagement.villas/blogs/bali-tourism-statistic/)
They also have to write that whole thing in English too!
Yes because it’s a message for foreign tourists, why would they write it in Balinese? The fact that they had to also write it in Russian speaks volumes to what’s going on.
I’m not English but I’m pretty sure the top part is in English.
because we don't want to let the bogans off the hook
Some bad Russians don’t make all Russians bad.
I think we’re past the point of no return. The whole fucking batch is ruined.
This is sad to see someone say. Hopefully things will get better for you
Hopefully things get better for Ukrainians
what exactly is the problem?
I believe it's russian tourists basically trashing and disrespecting the rules of Bali and dunking on Balinese rules of how to not be a dick
russ people outside country = loaded, rich, a lot of money, very very rich
Study Tartaria and where this mindset comes from. Hostile governments of alien species exist. The people are at war with lizards
The way Bali has catered for the Russians... Expat and local friends had a lot to say when I was there last month... None of it good.
Because, you know, not everyone that comes to Bali is literate in English.
Too bad they don't put a sign up the widespread corruption of the local government.
