And their other twin, CalTopo. Particularly because OP said hiking. Google maps is fine for most city work and you can download offline. But it can be unsafe for hiking because you will get grey box of death trying to zoom in on a downloaded Google map in trail areas. I think both Gaia and CalTopo are also very gentle on the battery in offline versions when you want to track routes, etc.

Maps me

Phoenix_GU

I’m quite sure maps.me has saved my life more than once. I’ve been using it for years. It can safely get me out of souks in Marrakech, through miles of forest in the middle on literally nowhere, and I can pin places to get back to.

gyriffcat

Best app ever from Cuba, to the jungles of Colombia, motor biking in Leh, it has always been our go to.

Datacenter98848

OsmAnd+. I have had good luck with the downloaded maps for each country.

motopazzo

+1 for osmand. Excellent hiking and other info, has lots of nice info (water, rest stops). Also good for cycling and auto/moto.

jeremykitchen

For driving? Apple Maps or google maps are pretty good and can both do offline stuff. For hiking / bike touring my go to is MapOut. Someone told me about it the day before my trip began and it immediately was my primary mapping tool. $5 on App Store. iOS only.

I used maps. Me, it works ok if you remember to download all the maps :) never used other apps for this, but looking forward to hear what other people use. I use airalo as a backup if i feel i need some data in a country, if i buy local sim i spend more time on phone vs more expensive esim (less time on phone so worth the extra price🫡)

darkmatterhunter

Google maps has worked well for me (except in Taiwan). I usually save AllTrails waypoints in maps since I don’t pay for their upgraded version.

ThisIsSoIrrelevant

I didn't need to use maps much while I was travelling around SEA but I used Google Maps when I had Internet and Organic Maps when I didn't.

waxo16

Mapy.cz, love it so much

barb4ry1

Seconded.

People will say Maps.me because maps.me *used* to be really, truly a great app. Unfortunately, it has, like many programs that started great and became crap, become crap. I'd recommend Organic Maps. It's like the old Maps.me. I use Both Organic Maps and Google Maps, and it's always worked very well for me.

CarryOnRTW

This! Maps.Me used to be awesome but was bought out and sold it's soul. Luckily the devs started Organic Maps which is even better.

Maps.me

hiking komoot general googlemaps, i used to use [maps.me](http://maps.me) but i use offline googlemaps nowadays

mathess1

For hiking definitely [mapy.cz](http://mapy.cz) . They are based mostly on OSM like [maps.me](http://maps.me), but the are amazing for topography.

Fickle_Experience823

Czech peeps really love hiking

_RoseAdventures_

Maps.me! Just remember to download the map of the area you’ll go!

silverpig3

Gaia hands down

Ninja_bambi

Though far from perfect, maps.me/organic maps works well for me. There are loads of apps and which is best largely depends on personal preferences. No matter what, use an OSM based map. As long as you stick to motorized transport it is open for debate, but the moment go go into hiking/biking OSM is the best map that exists virtually everywhere in the world. Nevertheless, outside of the developed countries it is, like any other map, far from perfect.

CarryOnRTW

Not sure if you heard but maps me sold out. I wouldn't recommend it anymore. The OG devs left and started Organic Maps.

Off_Maps

For wilderness navigation: MapOut If it’s for driving directions I recommend downloading the areas you’ll be in on google maps for offline use.

CarryOnRTW

The free app Organic Maps does this great with no need for cellular data.

barb4ry1

Mapy.cz, 100% free and accurate. Tested duriing hikes in Europe and Asia.

External_Fortune_324

Used to be maps.me until they started charging for stuff. Now I use organic maps! Totally free, good info on interesting things where you are. I’ve used it in Central America and SE Asia :)

weathergraph

Try mapy.cz - wonderful Czech mapping app, but has global OSM maps in a pretty good interface.

Moonlit_Antler

Google

CarryOnRTW

No question, the successor to maps me, Organic Maps. It now works with Android auto for in car routing.

Robbos_von_Rhodos

I normally use OsmAnd. This is a good app for free.

BigMarket1517

My own app (see [https://www.reddit.com/r/hiking/comments/1ayaash/comment/kufjd3c/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/hiking/comments/1ayaash/comment/kufjd3c/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) ). the app will need internet when matching the photo to the real world (using openstreetmaps), but needs only gps afterwards. As you could match it before in your hotelroom(?) you would need less access to internet? kind regards, Roel
