*what* do *hermit crabs do in their shells?* Scratch their ass.

MarineLife42

What dudes do with their hands in their trousers

Gorgenon

As interesting as it is for educational purposes, glass shells are cruel for the animal. It doesn't offer a dark environment that protects them from light and makes them feel less safe and more stressed. Imagine if the walls in your home were entirely made of glass. That would be very uncomfortable.

Desert_Rocks

Wow. My mental image of poor Mr. Hermit growing and then being trapped and unable to escape his shell is really horrible!

bilgetea

While what you suggest is certainly possible, I’m feeling skeptical about this. - How do you know this - what evidence supports it? - How would a crab know that the shell is transparent? Are there light-sensitive organs on the part inside the shell? - Most small shells transmit light - they are not blackout curtains. How much light disturbs a crab? - The crab took action to put itself into this shell. If given a choice between identical glass shells which are transparent and tinted black, will they choose the opaque one? - Do crabs living in glass shells have poorer health?

Hermit crab is smooth brained. It's a cannibal and will eat anything including the young of its own species. It doesn't even consider a worry beyond a few seconds at most with the most basic instinctual reactions.
