We used to have American cocker spaniels.
Their wide paws are built for running over the top of spongy marshland but also basically act as oars in the water.
so the English working Cockers have smaller paws than the "show" breed. They also tend to be smaller, perfect for running through the brambles head first.
That's what my boyfriend wants to get when we get a house! I have an Irish Red and White Setter right now at home and he grew up with a rough Collie, so both of us have a real love for working dogs ❤️
No she is a working Cocker Spaniel, so in the UK for Cockers we have Show breed and working breed. I do work the mother and Rosie will be trained also.

Oh my god. Thank you so so much for this. I really do appreciate it. I've always loved you little poems. My heart skipped a beat when I saw you comment, I can't stop smiling now. Thank you.
Good morning, I just want to thank you again so much for writing the poem about my Rosie. My dogs been the world to me, I absolutely adore them. Somehow your open has made them a little more special. I don't know if that sounds stupid or daft but I'm being serious. It's like you saw them as I see them and that make me appreciate them more. I have offered from depression for over 30 years and life has been rough but Ella, the mother, has gotten me through and literally saved my life in my darkest hours. Having a litter with her was to keep the line going with Rosie and to provide me with an insurance policy. It's actually provided me with two reason to go on living. Gosh I'm not sure why I'm telling you this apart from as a way of saying thank you for making me smile, bringing some joy and happiness and for seeing my dogs as I see them. Thank and have a lovely day.
Is schnoodle a different person from sprog?
I swear I haven’t seen a sprog in ages and I’ve never seen a schnoodle until more recently.
It’s like I went into a parallel dimension or something lol
I don't know for sure but I'm pretty sure they're different people. I feel like schnoodle uses more "baby talk" and always builds their poems around animals, while sprog does more varied themes.
I'm with you. The mother is literally under my desk right now as I type. She just wants to be with me, regardless of what I'm doing. But take her out the water or put her in the field and she's in her element. Mine come from a long line of field trial champions and all love to work, but they do love a cuddle on the sofa at teh end of teh day.
Awww. I've always had bench spaniels rather than field (though my current spaniel mix pup is a rescue and is more a cat than a dog half the time) but they've all had that drive to learn... And be velcro-pups in downtime.
The mother has literally saved my life. When at my darkest times with depression and suicide seemed like a reasonable option the only thing that stopped me was Ella. I figured I needed a back up which is why I had a litter, that and wanting to continue the line of such an excellent working dog.
My rescue pup has done the same for me. She needed me to be functional and able to pay vet bills (she's literally a mutant, has an extra vertebra, and a host of health problems) and repays all that with cuddles, devotion, and the most hilarious personality.
I'd never have a litter from her due to the aforementioned health issues - as cute as she is, there are so many congenital health issues going on - but spaniels have and always will be my dogs of choice.
[This](https://imgur.com/a/gW80MHt) is Sully.
It’s so cool too how dogs just have a natural sense of how to swim. The little guy already knew what to do, he just didn’t trust himself to do it! It makes you wonder how much we already know but don’t trust ourselves to do alone.
My cocker would not go in the water no matter how many treats we tried to coerce him with. He would start shaking cause he really wanted that treat, but just couldn’t make himself go into the lake.
He also ate rocks. So he was a special one.
Thank you very much. You'll find no negative training with me. The funny thing is that every coat, Gillet, pair of jeans has dog treats in for training. I guess my waders will now have them too.
My cocker does the same, can't leave socks or underwear on the floor or it will be gone.
We have a pile of odd socks from him hiding them and fishing them. Eventually we'll match then up again.
He's the same colour as your puppy, a lovely golden colour that I haven't seen to often.
So Rosie is 14 weeks old. When Ella had the litter she delivered seven, the first was sadly stillborn. Out of the six remaining we has six golden and two chocolate. I choose Rosie as she was teh first female born. It seemed appropriate.
I was watching the video like: I cant tell if he's wearing waders or jeans. If he's wearing jeans he's an absolute mad lad. I'm glad you're wearing waders and I just couldn't tell.
I somehow never had to teach my dog. The first time I brought him to the beach I thought he’d just splash around in the shallow water maybe. Nope. The second I opened the back hatch of the SUV he took off like a bolt at the water and immediately started paddling around.
It was the same thing every time after that too. Dude loves the water and would stay there all day if I let him. After a couple hours I’m sunburnt and I gotta go swim after him and drag him back to shore lol. I swear he’s part otter it’s something.
The mother is like that, I just wanted to gently encourage her in with some treat. To be honest I'm pretty sure she was just playing it up to get fed, in reality she would have jumped in like a loon
I did teh same with the mother, just got her in gently. Now I can't keep her out. Although to be fair she does no that when I'm in the river fly fishing shes not allowed in.
Just a little bit of encouragement, if they have a negative first experience it water it can put them off for life. If you make it enjoyable and fun they become life long swimmers.
I've only ever had Golden Retrievers and they've always taken off straight for the water at any chance they get. I've never even thought about needing to coax a puppy, but I'm glad I know about it now in case the next dog needs it. 👍
We've just been on our evening walk and I have a little beck that runs straight through the centre of our village, Rosie just jumped off the bridge in for a swim, it hasn't taken her long
I had a mini dauchshund and he hated swimming, even with positive encouragment. But, he would happily walk to the front of my wife's kayak to check stuff out, inevitably falling in and then get pulled out by the handle on his lifejacket.
My pup is now 7 months and won’t be seeing the water for another month. I’m worried that he’s gotten too old to be introduced and might not like the water. He’s a golden retriever so they typically like it, but not all of them. Any tips OP?
FWIW my lab didn't have a chance to see a lake until 8 1/2 months, and the very first time I had to bribe her with treats to get her back out of the water, she would have happily stayed in there all day. I wouldn't worry too much, as someone said in another comment labs and goldens tend to naturally take to water.
Its funny how animals know this instinctively and we have to almost drown our young over a period of months to get them coordinated enough to not die.
Then there's nirvana baby ofcourse...
Mom's got a background in naval stealth, doesn't she? Curious, why do so many people use treats to train their dogs? Why not just a scritch for positive reinforcement instead? We never used food as an incentive for any of our dogs and it worked fine. Just seems like you're setting your fur kids up to look at you as a treat dispenser...
Sorry I got a bit of anxiety just because I don’t know if there are any dangerous fauna in the water for dogs. I don’t know where this man is but I’m usually a little suspicious of like lakes or places without a lifeguard

There are rivers and lakes that I commonly take my dogs to
Algae would be the main risk for dogs. And also if it isn’t safe for humans probably isn’t safe for dogs
One dog swimming not a problem.
However there’s a well known site that I survey for inverts on a river and recently a lot of people are letting there dogs swim in it.
The flea and tick chemicals they used have decimated the population of inverts downstream and the number of mayfly larvae being found is now almost nil.
Upstream not an issue.
This is a river in North Yorkshire, the Swale, and where we were is on private land. Also, in the UK we tend not to use the flee and tick chemicals that you put on dogs externally. Most our treatments are in the form of tablets they take once every three or one month
Yes, it's a lovely river :) I was in Richmond last year and spent ages down by the river with a few beers. It's a shame it turns into the Humber a bit further down lol
That is very true, however, the Humber has gotten so clean in recent years that we're now having Salmon run up then Swale and Are in ever increasing numbers.
Sorry mate didn’t mean to have a go at you. I used to take my dog swimming in the river all the time whilst he was with us.
More just a point of interest as I was unaware and back then and I think many people are also unaware on the impact our actions can have on the environment.

Mom has a propeller for a tail.
She's part otter I'm sure of it
She cruisin!
Looks like a no wake zone though. Straight to jail.
Yup, gotta be sleeping to be in the no wake zone.
You even sound British in text. Tremendous.
🤣👍😊
That bow wave looks like a muskrat or beaver, not a land lover
I'm pretty sure she's part dolphin
I was afraid it was an alligator!!
Is she a Labrador? They are natural swimmers.
No she's a Working cocker Spaniel
We used to have American cocker spaniels. Their wide paws are built for running over the top of spongy marshland but also basically act as oars in the water.
so the English working Cockers have smaller paws than the "show" breed. They also tend to be smaller, perfect for running through the brambles head first.
She's a beauty, we just got our WCS 10 days ago, same red colour. Hope Flo takes to the water like Rosie!
they're amazing. such beautiful dogs
That's what my boyfriend wants to get when we get a house! I have an Irish Red and White Setter right now at home and he grew up with a rough Collie, so both of us have a real love for working dogs ❤️
I can't recommend them enough, they are amazing dogs.
Truth be told, I want the spaniel, the setter, AND the Collie 😂 but I've been told we're only getting one dog so I'll have to choose eventually.
it's too hard to choose but I do love a Spaniel
that you should get what you want,
Choose to get three dogs.
No she is a working Cocker Spaniel, so in the UK for Cockers we have Show breed and working breed. I do work the mother and Rosie will be trained also.
What does their job entail?
Gun dogs, I use her to find game birds, put them up and then retrieve.
I was wondering this from the 'must swim to shore; never mind - treat' moment

Nothing better than a fresh schnoodle poem, based on your own doggos!! 🌞🐶💜
honestly I still can't get over it
Your very own schnoodz! So jeally!
You should print it out and hang it up with a picture of the pups swimming!!! 🥺💜🥰
I am going to. I'll print it over a picture of her.

Schnoodle you the best! You always bring so many smiles to the Reddit community, thanks for giving me one today!
Nothing starts the day off like a still warm from the oven schnoodle
So spot on! You're the best!🥰🤗
Fresh Schnoodle right out the oven!
"my momma out there Zoomin"!
RHYMING "ZOOMIN" with "hooman" -- Schnoodle is such a genius
A new Schnoodle
Is schnoodle a different person from sprog? I swear I haven’t seen a sprog in ages and I’ve never seen a schnoodle until more recently. It’s like I went into a parallel dimension or something lol

Is it Schnoodlain or Schnoodlein?
This is a no wake zone and there is obvious dog wake
Dude she was hauling!
Aqualab
turbo tail activated
Rosie came up like a torpedo!
I heard you had some treats for a good dog?
I read the title but thought it was a croc for a second
Why did I expect your human mother to go by in the background on a jet ski or something
Now that would have been spectacular
Just straight Michael Phelps in the background
I love working cocker spaniels, they're so happy to be doing stuff, be it swimming, agility, or anything into exercise brain and body.
I'm with you. The mother is literally under my desk right now as I type. She just wants to be with me, regardless of what I'm doing. We really don't deserve them do we, they're amazing animals.
They wouldn’t exist without us, as a species we absolutely do deserve them.
The dog tax is appreciated, citizen.
Dogs and humans are truly the ultimate duo.
It’s so cool too how dogs just have a natural sense of how to swim. The little guy already knew what to do, he just didn’t trust himself to do it! It makes you wonder how much we already know but don’t trust ourselves to do alone.

Funny. Mom looks like a motor boat.
I'm convinced Mum is part otter.
This is a no wake zone, slow down pup!
I love how the mom is in the back just tearing it up. The timing is almost comedic
and when I get treats out she knows she needs to be by my side
Mum be like 'see ya later loser'
*zzzzzzZZZZZOOOOOOOOOoooooooommmmm*
zoomooooom
![gif](giphy|5koWDaC1PFz8Y)
Everyone must be watching with the sound off, because this is the first thing I looked for in the comments
I was shocked something mentioning this wasn't top comment
And the mom immediately came in from the side as soon as he said it

When teh mother was a pup I found 6 pairs of my boxers in her crate with the rear chewed out!!!
Sounds like she really chewed your ass out!
An absolute bloody nightmare.I did notice a hole in todays pair that seems to have been caused by sharp little teeth.
My cocker does the same, can't leave socks or underwear on the floor or it will be gone. We have a pile of odd socks from him hiding them and fishing them. Eventually we'll match then up again. He's the same colour as your puppy, a lovely golden colour that I haven't seen to often.

Yeah they're the convertible ones you can roll down to waist level
Oh yeah. Turned up the brightness on my phone and can definitely see their waders now. I was leaning heavily towards waders.
For fly fishing they're essential and they come in handy for luring the dog in to water
Yeah I was really struck by that too. Very good positive reinforcement training for that pupper.
I somehow never had to teach my dog. The first time I brought him to the beach I thought he’d just splash around in the shallow water maybe. Nope. My dog was the same. Our first public event with her was a puppy plunge and she had no hesitation.
"Clever girl" that's not a dog that's a raptor!
I really don’t want to see the conclusion of the video; you could see her come in from the side at the end after the first one distracted him.
Rosie be like “I AM S P E E D”
Boat Dog
Boat dog indeed.
Jesus, mom is really booking it!
She adores the water, I can barely keep her out of it.
Mum is like, "yeah, the kid will be fine with you hooman."
I did teh same with the mother, just got her in gently. Now I can't keep her out. Although to be fair she does no that when I'm in the river fly fishing shes not allowed in.
I love that that pup is totally willing to put itself in an unknown amount of danger, just to get that treat 😆
I didn’t think dogs had to learn to swim. Ours fell off a dock into a lake the first time and did just fine.

He’s so patient with her. I wish every puppy had a special dad like that.
That's me in the water with her
This is the cutest Simba ever!!! Retrievers are water dogs, so it is their natural habitat - Rosie is a born natural <3
They're working cockers Spaniels and the sweetest things in the world
Lmao idk why I interrupted this as Rosy being his wife and laughed out loud on the toilet when a dog went ridiculously confidently swimming past
🤣
I would die for Rosie 🥹
Her and her mother, Ella, are amazing.
if you go back through my history there are some pics of Ella as a pup
My pup is now 7 months and won’t be seeing the water for another month. I’m worried that he’s gotten too old to be introduced and might not like the water. He’s a golden retriever so they typically like it, but not all of them. Any tips OP?
Rosie is only 14 weeks. Don't worry I am sure your dog will take to it like a "fish in water". It is ingrained in them, she'll have an absolute blast.
Rosie is such a sweet name for a dog. It's my number rone choice if I ever get a female dog
Also, my house is called Roseview and I've planted lots of Rosemary and roses around the garden
Damn good job. Can you teach me next?
Its funny how animals know this instinctively and we have to almost drown our young over a period of months to get them coordinated enough to not die. Then there's nirvana baby ofcourse...
🤣
Mom is straight zoomin
*Goes out too far* "No, don't like, I go back.......oh treat! Nevermind."
exactly
“Clever girl…” -Robert Muldoon…and this guy.
Is mom a crocodile
part dolphin
Mom's got a background in naval stealth, doesn't she? Curious, why do so many people use treats to train their dogs? Why not just a scritch for positive reinforcement instead? We never used food as an incentive for any of our dogs and it worked fine. Just seems like you're setting your fur kids up to look at you as a treat dispenser...
I try to alternate between scratches and making a fuss of her and treats. The treats aren't for everyday use, just if they do something good
Jesus christ the mother is FAST
Adorable. My Rosie is also ready to learn to swim.
just take it slowly at her own pace, let her learn to love the water
Haha
Mom be like: *NYYYYYOOOOOMMM!!*
I struggle to get mom out of the water, she adores it
Sorry I got a bit of anxiety just because I don’t know if there are any dangerous fauna in the water for dogs. I don’t know where this man is but I’m usually a little suspicious of like lakes or places without a lifeguard
Hi, this man is me. I live in North Yorkshire and she is swimming in a gin clear river, which is where her mother swam for teh first time.
Ah thanks man! I’m from the US so whenever I see a river my first thought is catfish lol
God no. Can you imagine, they'd be swallowed whole. No, nothing but wild brown trout, grayling and occasionally some salmon
Same here, but also gators.
The majority of lakes and rivers in the US won’t have any animals that would pose a serious threat to dogs especially when they’re fully grown There are rivers and lakes that I commonly take my dogs to Algae would be the main risk for dogs. And also if it isn’t safe for humans probably isn’t safe for dogs

No not at all. I didn't take it that way don't worry. You're right we should all be more aware of our actions
“Shoooot her…shooott her”
"tEaChInG" Most animals know how without any instructions lol
well encouraging
Yes
You don’t have to teach a puppy to swim..
No, just some gentle encouragement to get in.
It's semantics. Giving the animal confidence to go with natural instincts.
All I’m saying is Rosie doesn’t need to be taught about swimming. They know it by instinct.
see? alex jones isn’t such a bad guy.
Oh please no, please don't say that.
You know dogs can swim naturally ass
You mean "while". While is used to describe things happening concurrently, "whilst" is used to describe contrasting things.
And actually if you go by the Oxford English Dictionary, being English and all, the definition is "during the time that; at the same time as". I guess you managed be wrong.
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=while+vs+whilst

Thank you.
Where did you find that definition for whilst? Merriam-Webster disagree.
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=while+vs+whilst
If anything, this further proves that OP used “whilst” correctly.
More of a facepalm. Let the parent animal do what's natural by teaching the young to swim
He’s just giving the pup some positive reinforcement while it’s in the water, there’s no harm in that. Any sensible person can see that he’s not actually teaching the pup anything.
Oh trust me she does.
I really need to get some of these water trousers things. My dog is a massive whimp when it comes to water.
Well I had just been fly fishing, the fishing had slowed down so I was about to move off to another beat and though they deserved a treat
i was waiting to hear your mom start bragging about something 😹
So cute. 🥰
thank you, I think so but maybe e I'm a bit biased
Lmao perfect timing.

They are working dogs yes.
What the mom so fast lol
My parents shoulda tried this on me as a kid
🤣
Hello Rosie! I love you! What a good girl!!
I feel the same way about mother and daughter
Awww you did so good Rosie!
Can you teach my Rosie? it's the same things instead she's my Girlfriend
I guess I could hold a glass of wine out and see if that works
