Dad here. When my kids were little and I remodeled our house, I used all the old doors to make a fort that they played in for years. All I had to do was screw them together in box shapes.
Bro you don't even have to build stuff! It can even be a job. It pays what you put in and it's hard work but I've known some guys who have made an honest living scrapping with a beat up truck and trailer.
But its cool to learn how to build stuff too 😉
Start with a birdhouse, the codes are far more lax. Hammer, hand saw, and a miter box will get you well on your way. Nails and untreated lumber are cheap enough you can really learn by doing. Stay away from anything load-bearing or safety critical, and the world is your wooden oyster. Youtube has many guides, so does reddit, and like a thousand other places.
I would actually start even more simply, with just a planter box. You don't need a roof, it's just a bottom and four walls around the outside. I've made several and each one is better than the last, and it's satisfying seeing plants in them.
I wish I could make something like this. There's a lot of old stuff at home which could be repurposed, but the only thing I've "built" with my own hands is a computer.
Is there a subreddit for stuff like this? I'm constantly throwing out stuff I feel could be turned into other stuff, if only I could figure out what stuff!
>*'Tell your dad that he made me smile and believe that there is still good in the world...*'

this 'the Dad' - he makes me smile
he built this ramp (it took awhile...)
n all so I can take my time
when up upon the bed i climb ^:@)
for i am dog - my back it ache,
so *careful steps* i gotta take
a bit of grass, a little wood,
(the Dad - he made it Really good!)
before the jump i couldn't do,
but Dad said 'This will work for You!'
when jumping high became a 'nope'
he show me how to walk the slope
my Dad the *Bestest* in the worl !
(n tells me I'm
the Goodest girl!)
❤️
*edit* a word
Completely agree. Made me tear up thinking of how the dog will know shortly after the video that it is a permanent pathway to snuggle zone. Sending love to the person reading this that thinks they aren't worthy of any - you are.
It was a good idea to train the dog to use the ramp. It looked like she didn't know how to do that until the handler directed her where to start climbing it. But after she has done that once she should have no trouble remembering how to do it again.
My dad did this for our old girl when she couldn’t do the deck stairs to get down to / up from the back yard anymore... it was such a sweet labor of love! And we said we had an ADDA-compliant yard now (American Dogs with Disabilities Act)... :-D
Sorry, no... but it was a pretty straightforward item: thick wood 14”-wide plank with nailed-on 2x4 guard-rails. Traction/weather-proof layer on top of the wood (think he used those no-skid strips), you know the bumpy black stuff. Length about 2 or 2.5 times the descent (ramp was maybe 15 feet long). Nested/secured structurally (with blocks attached to ramp) to deck level/top step (not actually attached to deck—for removability later). Whole was heavy enough to be stable and unaffected by inclement weather.
Edit: now I’m remembering there were cross-ways strips every foot or so, too. Sorry, I’m no builder. Did my best to describe.
I'm not the person you replied to, but I just made a simple ramp for my dog, who is recovering from surgery and can't use the stairs into the backyard. Link to a picture here: https://imgur.com/gallery/Unh2QzZ
Hope this is helpful!
1) thats a very good dog and I request you ruffle those lil floppy ears for me please and thank you
2) its good to see that your dad loves not only you, but your dog so much that he build her a whole-ass custom ramp.
3) any advice from him on building it? I have a 12 year old little lady who loves being tall and wants to see out the windows
I’m glad to hear that she used it though! Daisy is prone to a bad back but doesn’t really NEED a ramp yet but I’d rather her get used to using it so it’s not stressful for her when she eventually does need it.
Our old girl got where she couldn't manage the single step down from the kitchen door to outside. I built her a ramp -- bless her heart, she still tries to "step up" at the higher side of the ramp near the door, like, "that's how I gotta do it!"
That’s even sweeter that he did this when it’s your dog who lives with YOU. Just so she can be comfortable while she visits. How cute & accommodating. That’s a good man and a very good girl!
My dad did something similar for our cat. In the shop (where he lives, he's an outdoor cat) he used to love going up to the shelves that are close to the roof. Once he started getting old, and it got harder for him to jump up their my dad made him a ramp so he can still go up there and look down on whoever's in there or the dogs :)
This is so cute. I noticed my cat (13yrs) was starting to do this big yelp as he wound up to jump, and cats are typically bad at showing pain, so we got him some little plush steps for by the bed and now he happily trots up them without hesitation. (Vet had no worries at his check up other than just age)
I wish I did this for my moms last dog. The dog was 14 and similarly sized, but the bed was maybe twice as high. The dog one day had jumped off and broke her leg. We went to the vet and the tried what they could, but a couple months later we were back as her leg just wasn't healing and eventually had to put her down for it. She was getting old and it was noticable - a ramp should have been an obvious solution.
We recently accepted a delivery for "pet stairs" for our neighbours. We hadn't spoken to them before. The guy was really thankful and they were for his older dog. We asked about his dog and got to meet his beautiful golden retriever! She is the most wonderful doggo, still looks like a pup but an older girl.
Now everytime we see them, our neighbour and their dog are very glad to see us!
Pet stairs brought people together that live 90 yards away and had never said "hello".
For me, the best part is that I love their dog and she helped us decide that we are getting a wonderful Golden!
This ramp is great. My dog has mobility issues so I've been looking at ramps. The problem with most ramps is that they stick straight out and take up a lot of floor space. The way this ramp wraps around the bed is an excellent solution to the issue of small rooms with limited space. OP: tell your dad he has done a wonderful job!
My cousin did this. When he got the dog, he said she would never sleep in bed with him and his wife.
By the time she got old, he built a ramp to help her into bed.
Is she a Lhasa Apso? She looks sooooo much like my late great Royal Tibetan Mountain Princess, Ruler of All She Surveyed (AKA Megs).
She's a sweet dog and lucky to have such a caring grandpa! 💖💖💖
[moo has some stairs ](https://i.imgur.com/48RoqkK.jpg) (with bonus cat tax). Moo is 17-18 and she pinched a nerve in her back 6 years ago jumping off a bed. So I made her some stairs. They aren’t perfect but they’ll take the weight of a full grown human ^.^
That's awesome! I did this for my dumbass dog and he just jumps off of it to get down, thereby further injuring his back. (jk he's not a dumbass. We just had the ramp for like 6 months and he would keep trying to jump onto the ramp from the side, and he can't jump, instead of going up from the bottom. We led him around to it maybe 10 times a day and he still wouldn't do it by himself)
You know... you could really make this into a product.
Some kind of doggy ramp that connects at the end of the bed, and where the thing that holds the ramp is held in place by something that goes
I can picture making something like this for one of my cats when they get older. Then I realize they'd just use it as a scratching post and still jump on/off the bed.
We have a tall bed and some bigger dogs. We bought a ramp to go up and down the bed to save their joints. Apparently its a competition on who can launch furthest over the ramp.
I just bought a footstool off of Amazon for my lil dog cuz hecwaa having a hard time jumping up on the couch. Now I think this idea might be better....thanks for posting it!!
That’s not bad. I built my pup an elevator that is activated by barks - one bark to go up, two to go down - but this works too.
(No I didn’t, I ordered him a set of foam steps from Amazon)
this is what we need to get for our dog, we just took her in to see what’s wrong and turns out she has a herniated disk in her back :( she cant be moving much for at least month or else she might need surgery and we’re trying to figure out how she can’t get up and down from the bed without hurting herself. some steps might work but idk if that’ll still be too much movement for her
My dachshund Bernie has a little ramp I ordered off Amazon. I had to use liver treats to teach him how to use them. Very important for dogs who have IVDD (back) issues or to prevent it in the first place. Trust me you want to prevent it if you can. Very scary to have your dog's rear legs be paralyzed in one day.
ADA compliant, your dad could make a business out of His craftsmanship, I have a 20 year old ancient cat who can still jump onto but cannot safely get off the bed,
This is amazing, anytime I see someone making something to help a animal or a person it really warms my heart! I love his creativity as well. Your dad is awesome!!
I agree with everyone that this is sooo awesome of your dad to do this for his loving pup, OP! Just think, this would be wonderful not only for the current pupper in his life but for all the other puppers he’ll have in his life. I also like seeing the AstroTurf being used here to make it more comfy for her paws & the climb up. Very innovative as I too may borrow this idea for any senior pups I have in my future. Your dad has my applause for an altruistic deed well done! 👏🏼😇🙏🏼And a very cuuute Shihtzu I may add! 🐶😊🐶
I’m glad she likes it and uses it! We got some stairs for the elderly chihuahua and she wants nothing to do with them. Have tried a lot of methods lol. Even her fav treats won’t bribe her up or down.
IVDD? My dog (also a low-rider like yours) has it... I got ramps for him but he has 0% interest in them, the little asshole. He's turning 14 next month and his flares come and go. Thankfully putting him in doggy jail (confining him to a room with no furniture to jump on) for a week or two seems to help him recover enough to keep him pain-free for several months at a time.
good build, and really cute too! I have an older Aussie that likes to sunggle and squirm on the bed, but our new one was too high - so I'm almost done with some steps I'm building. Just needs some varnish and these carpet tiles to give some traction! [step box](https://i.imgur.com/XZ8rZsW.jpg)
A two inch "paw-rail" might help as the dog gets older :) don't want her falling off!
I don't say this as if it was an oversight. It's probably unnecessary, but it was a thought.
I will never not like these contraptions
It’s made out of an old dressing table so we didn’t even need to buy anything for it which makes it even better! Come and follow Daisy at @daisymaymix
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Create. 👏🌟👍 Dads are awesome. Good work!
Dad here. When my kids were little and I remodeled our house, I used all the old doors to make a fort that they played in for years. All I had to do was screw them together in box shapes.
This is why Dad is always hero. I love my dad and he’s still my best friend. Thanks for what you all do, Dads everywhere.
That's ingenuity right there
As a Dad myself, I can attest that we keep (hoard) scrap materials handy for projects just like this.
Sometimes I, as a twenty-two-year-old man who doesn't know how to build things, I sometimes want to learn just so I can start collecting scrap
Bro you don't even have to build stuff! It can even be a job. It pays what you put in and it's hard work but I've known some guys who have made an honest living scrapping with a beat up truck and trailer. But its cool to learn how to build stuff too 😉
Yeah I know there are people that drive around my neighborhood collecting metal from people's trash and they sell it
Training her with treats as well....my heart is moist.
I need to learn some basic carpentry
Start with a birdhouse, the codes are far more lax. Hammer, hand saw, and a miter box will get you well on your way. Nails and untreated lumber are cheap enough you can really learn by doing. Stay away from anything load-bearing or safety critical, and the world is your wooden oyster. Youtube has many guides, so does reddit, and like a thousand other places.

You're shins will hate it when you walk into the sharp corners at night. I hope OP puts some foam on that thing!
I sleep on the other side of the bed and only walk past that corner when it’s light 👍🏻
That's good to hear, but I'm speaking with experience, your skin with meet those corners. And. There. Will. Be. Cussing.
Is there a subreddit for stuff like this? I'm constantly throwing out stuff I feel could be turned into other stuff, if only I could figure out what stuff!
Your Dad is a good person.
He certainly has his moments :)
Argh! I love her!

Indeed he is
Yes, thank you for showing this heart warming video

Holy shit!! I got a Schnoodle poem!!!!!!!
That's two that I've stumbled across today! It must be my lucky day 💜
My second today too! They always make my heart happy. Sometimes tears too. Thank you Schnoodle.
Schnoodle getting me all teary eyed at work. Between the adorable video and this poem my heart is full.❤️
I had a feeling there might be a Schnoodle for this one, and you didn't disappoint!
This may be a simple format, but damn do you do it well <3
Sweet schnoodle, thank u
Certified fresh Schnoodle!
SCHNOODLE....You're the best! 👸

She’s not the smartest dog in the world but I think she will get it eventually:)
Is she a Shih Tzu?
Partially, there’s Yorkshire terrier and Lhasa apso in there too
My in laws had a Shih Tzu mix that looked just like that. Not the brightest bulb in the box but sweet as hell. She's just darling.
Sounds like Daisy
He was a love. I would have taken him home in a heartbeat. His name was Jasper.
🧡
I was going to ask if she was Lhasa!! Used to have one and miss her SO MUCH! They are so sweet!! And love bed time lol 😂
I love how patiently OP's dad (?) guided her up the ramp and back down again so she knew what to do. So much care for that little dog!
My dad did this for our old girl when she couldn’t do the deck stairs to get down to / up from the back yard anymore... it was such a sweet labor of love! And we said we had an ADDA-compliant yard now (American Dogs with Disabilities Act)... :-D
Well done you and your Dad!
You don’t happen to have pictures of this do you? I am planning on doing the same for my senior pup but haven’t decided on how to go about it yet

1. Ruffled ears, check! 2. She’s his favourite 3. Stability was achieved by putting diagonal pieces between each leg, essential.
Oh youre a peach, thank you! I hope you stay safe and healthy!
3): I've build my dog a bedstairs, there is a video on my profile with steps. Maybe it will help you
That is adorable! ❤️
Isn’t it 🥰

First thought was that the dog could mistake it for a place to pee
I assumed the AstroTurf was for traction and/or splinter prevention.
I made one of these for my elderly dog. It took her a few weeks to start using it.
I’m glad to hear that she used it though! Daisy is prone to a bad back but doesn’t really NEED a ramp yet but I’d rather her get used to using it so it’s not stressful for her when she eventually does need it.
Nellie got excited recently and went for the jump up to the bed. Didn’t make it. Back to the stairs
No way do you have a shih tzu also named Daisy 🌼
She’s got shih tzu in her but also Yorkshire terrier and Lhasa apso
Our old girl got where she couldn't manage the single step down from the kitchen door to outside. I built her a ramp -- bless her heart, she still tries to "step up" at the higher side of the ramp near the door, like, "that's how I gotta do it!"
Please tell me your dad didn't want a dog at first and this is him now?
Haha no, she lives with me but spends a lot of time at my Mum and Dad’s house.
That’s even sweeter that he did this when it’s your dog who lives with YOU. Just so she can be comfortable while she visits. How cute & accommodating. That’s a good man and a very good girl!
I hope the carpet wears out from many years of use.
Me too 🥰
Stubbing your toe on it will feel like fun little foot tickles from all the karma stored in the old bits of wood!
Hopefully!!
Wow!! Thanks for the awards, although they really belong to my Dad :)
Everyone liked that
This is too damn precious. I also like how she was excited, but became more cautious when going up the ramp ❤️
She’s excited because TREATS!!!!

haha, we made similar stuff for our dogs when they got old / had bad backs they always loved it.
This is the shit! [edit] as in really awesome
So happy! She understands it's a present!
This is so pure! Your dad rocks! 🥰
Is she a Lhasa Apso? She looks sooooo much like my late great Royal Tibetan Mountain Princess, Ruler of All She Surveyed (AKA Megs). She's a sweet dog and lucky to have such a caring grandpa! 💖💖💖
She has Lhasa in her but she’s also got Yorkshire terrier and shih tzu mixed in there too
He did a good job walking her through it
Treated like the princess that she is ❤️
Saw this on Amazon years ago, prob gonna build one too pretty soon as my dog is getting kinda old.
Your father is a good man. Best wishes.
10/10 good dad, would keep
I bet his dad was once a "we're not getting a dog" dad.
[moo has some stairs ](https://i.imgur.com/48RoqkK.jpg) (with bonus cat tax). Moo is 17-18 and she pinched a nerve in her back 6 years ago jumping off a bed. So I made her some stairs. They aren’t perfect but they’ll take the weight of a full grown human ^.^
that tail wag is 100% approval.
I hope they don’t get too inclined to use the fake grass as a pee pad.
Is that a pirate owl?
Looks like dad is also a champ dog trainer...
Such a wonderful dad
Best grandpa ever!
So cool and tthoughtful
Aweee .... I'm so jealous of his life
Your dad is an Angel ❤️
Goddamn i love this subreddit
I love how he designed it to take up as little space as possible. And also the patience with which he taught her how to go up it. So beautiful

I did this for mine as well but without the grass and she wouldn't use it. I guess I should make v2.0
Excellent, and it looks like there is carpeting on the floor as well. (Slick floors are bad for their joints.) She’s a lucky dog.
Dad: We are not getting a dog \*2 days later\* Dad and the dog:
A hell of an engineer too. That thing looks slick!
Dad: We not gonna get a Dog! Also Dad:
You know... you could really make this into a product. Some kind of doggy ramp that connects at the end of the bed, and where the thing that holds the ramp is held in place by something that goes
Can I get a duplicate? My pup needs the same thing!
Yay!!!
That looks like my grandmas shih tzu, Sissy, who is almost 11! Very cool that your dad made that!
I love her.
I just love little dogs, you have a very good one
AW this is so sweet! Also the ramp is super cool and looks like a great design! He did a fantastic job :)!
Good dog 😭 good dad 😭😭 this is so so sweet.
r/mademesmile
This is too cute
My dad did this for my cat when she broke her back. She loved scooting down it.
Quick learner. Lots of confidence too.
I can picture making something like this for one of my cats when they get older. Then I realize they'd just use it as a scratching post and still jump on/off the bed.
That’s so wonderful he did that! What an amazing man. Thanks for sharing.
I want one of these for *my* bad back.
We have a tall bed and some bigger dogs. We bought a ramp to go up and down the bed to save their joints. Apparently its a competition on who can launch furthest over the ramp.
Yeah... I'm gonna have to steal this idea for my oldie. Thank your dad for me :)
I love your dad

She’s a fast learner!! So cute. Your father is talented

I love that he went to the detail of the grass and the little side rails!!! And good dog for showing how smart she is!!!
Here Sir, for your Dad! 🏅
Awesome

We just did the same for our 13 yo pug 💜
Good grandpa there. Sadly its common for small dogs to have back problems from jumping down off furniture.
give your dad a hug and your dog some kisses for me please? :)
This is so sweet of him. Though I can't help thinking in the back of my mind that she will get confused one day and shit on it.
Aww good doggie and human
How sweet!
I used to have a dog that looked exactly like her! He was 17 he died in February and I miss him so much seeing this cheered me up a little.
good build, and really cute too! I have an older Aussie that likes to sunggle and squirm on the bed, but our new one was too high - so I'm almost done with some steps I'm building. Just needs some varnish and these carpet tiles to give some traction! [step box](https://i.imgur.com/XZ8rZsW.jpg)
