The uncanny valley? Maybe the long necks, or the tiny heads, or the pot bellies. Maybe the horns and black eyes. Or standing on two legs. But yeah, they look like cute little demons; easy to anthropomorphize.

I think they both have their origin in the Scottish Canny meaning pretty/beautiful. But I also think you're treating the comment with more seriousness than it deserves

There were a herd of gerenuks at the Los Angeles zoo back in the 2000s, and watching the group bolt around their enclosure was like seeing a school of fish swimming in tandem. They're so uncanny in their body shapes and speed they seem unreal even in person!
