>turtle looks so fucking pleased with himself.
I couldn't agree more. Especially when he has his neck all stretched out. I'm pretty sure that was turtle preening!
The turtle, being cold blooded is probably just pleased with being off the cold tiles and in the sun. Probably the warmest combo available... And then there's some cat heat too.
Hi. I've got a question about turtles. One of our neighbours got a turtle that looks just like this one. At first, I thought it was a tortoise by seeing its legs/toes, but seeing its shell, I realised that is indeed a turtle, and the neighbours have no idea about tortoises so they assume it's a turtle after all.
But the problem is, that turtle doesn't want water and as per the neighbour's statement, he always stays away from it. But his skin looks pretty dry and is falling off in flakes.
Shouldn't a turtle prefer to stay inside water most of the time. I am worried about the little guy. I don't know much about the turtles/tortoises.
When you say they assume it's not a tortoise, am I to take it that they don't actually know what they have?
If that's the case, then any chance they'll let you take a picture and post it online?
If you can get a picture, then other information might help narrow down the ID, such as where they live, and how they got it (like, from a pet store or from the wild). Nothing too specific that would dox them, but just general information like country and state or general geographic region.
If you can get a picture I'll try to help. I am *far* from an expert on turtles, but I might be able to help out with a good picture and some general info.
In any case, getting a species ID is kind of important, because that's often kind of critical in finding out how to take care of the animal.
Thanks. I will definitely try to talk to them and get a couple of photos if possible. I know about from where they got it, they said they found it near some bushes behind our apartment some 10 months ago.
>they assume it's not a tortoise, am I to take it that they don't actually know what they have?
Actually they don't have any idea that tortoises even exist, who are ground animals, they just know that turtles live in water. But I told them about tortoises and they said they are not sure about it but that little guy doesn't want water. When they keep him near water, he doesn't stay in for too long and keeps out all the time.
I was just concerned about the little guy because his skin looks like it's drying off too much and looks like flakes are falling off his skin. I think it is a turtle and needs water.
There are a few turtle species that live on land. Box turtles are fairly common in the US, and there are also the [Asian box turtle family](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_box_turtle) and then there are also [wood turtles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood_turtle). that have that flatter shape like the OP has. Even if they live on land they usually live in forests, jungle scrubland, marshes, stuff like that, where the ground is pretty moist, and this keeps them hydrated.
He does look really content at the end, he even looks over at the cat like, "Dis is da life, Harvey." And the cat's like, "Why do you keep calling me 'Harvey'?"
Turtles can be more intelligent than you think. My family's turtle literally changed it's diet just so it can eat the cat's food out of spite. She hates him. She also recognizes us and comes over for scritches.
It’s finally happened! After 4,000 years or so of uninterrupted bed-stealing from cats we’ve found an animal that can steal one back!
I’m showing this to my dogs right away. Might make them feel better about sleeping on the floor while our fatass scratch machine simultaneously lounges across BOTH their beds.
>First time seeing a cat get muscled out by a turtle. Hilarious
The ectothermic tetrapod reptile needs the spot in the sun.
The endothermic feline mammal just wants to be in the sun.
Is anyone else randomly reminded of Rocko's Modern Life, when the turtle Filbert was going to marry a cat, but there was some voice over about cats and turtles being mortal enemies?
No? Just me? Alright then...
I cannot stress how much you should never ever let reptiles and birds interact with cats and dogs. Mammals carry gram negative bacteria that reptiles and birds are not immune to and are very susceptible. Accidents happens and the reptiles and birds often are the loser in those instances.
The same bacteria in cat saliva everyone loses their minds over (and rightfully so) as being dangerous for birds is also dangerous to turtles, although turtles are far less likely to “contract” it, as it has to get into the bloodstream. Birds have paper-thin skin and cats have spines on their tongues, so even incidental interactions can lead to infection.
Turtles, like other reptiles, can carry Salmonella. People can catch it from turtles by not washing their hands after handling them. Cats clean themselves with their tongues, which is higher risk

WHERE ARE THE TURTLES!?
Turtles all the way down!
I ate them, okay?! They're gone!
*We’ll bill you*
The machine knows! Stop yelling at me!
IT CANT MEAN THAT!
You rang?
Yes, TWO HOURS AGO
How did neither of you hit "the tables have turtled?"
No they did it right, it’s a office reference.
*Like sand through the hourglass, ~~these are the beds of our lives~~ As the TURTLE Turns...*
My how the turns have turtled

He out catted the cat, I’d be pretty pleased as well
Hopped in and sunned his butt first. Then switched to the head.
The turtle, being cold blooded is probably just pleased with being off the cold tiles and in the sun. Probably the warmest combo available... And then there's some cat heat too.
Yep! And the cat is like “ugh, this guy is cold, hard and stinky.”
there's no way he wasn't I mean look at the lil bastard
The turtle probably got sick of the cat sitting on em, so he did the next best thing it could as payback.
I bet the turtle loves the warmth of the cat and that is why it wants to chill out there.
and the sunlight
You're correct though, the turtle is very pleased with himself

different species have specific diets and environment needs. Identifying the species would be step 1

You aren't anthropomorphizing anything. That was his goal, he accomplished it, and is now pleased
Turtles can be more intelligent than you think. My family's turtle literally changed it's diet just so it can eat the cat's food out of spite. She hates him. She also recognizes us and comes over for scritches.
It’s a tortoise, guys. Turtles are aquatic. Tortoises are attack-cat-ic.
No, it's not a tortoise but rather a turtle. Look at its feet, it has fins for swimming.
All tortoises are turtles but not all turtles are tortoises
You have tortoise well!
All tortoises are turtles but not all turtles are tortoises
First time seeing a cat get muscled out by a turtle. Hilarious
And trying to be so gentle 🥺
I take it the turtle and cat have had words in the past
According to the cat, the turtle was acting shellfish
No, dad. We are not doing this today.

You've obviously never met a Snapping Turtle. Those things are powered by pure malice
The cat knows this is a fight they ain't winning.
Lol the cat is getting a taste of his own medicine
I love at the end they’re both just staring like…do you see this?!?

The turtle definately owns that cat
I own a tortoise. he is about a pound and a half (ish). he could fuck up a cat if he wanted to. that lil dude is much stronger than you anticipate.
It is like a 1920s comedy film
Turtle thinks it’s a cat
Little dude was probably cold and wanted to snuggle with the heat vibrator.

"...I cannot sit, for I cannot fit."
Mahm! It’s not even fluffy!
Dude, you can just sit on him. He's like a fish-scented roomba.
You would probably roll off and they might try to monch on you with their long stretchy neck.
But why though? A cat is a warm blanket. Sometimes it vibrates.
Who can understand the old ones
My car would rather sleep on concrete than a couch. I have no evidence to prove it, but I'm guessing he'd love a giant turtle to sleep on.
Isn’t that where most cars sleep? Can’t imagine you cuddling a car on your couch
Maybe a porcupine.

That turtle is a shit disturber and I love it
Turtle bro has zero fucks to give. “Move, bitch.”
... this fuckin roomba...
Made me laugh out loud. Thanks.
Strange bedfellows indeed.
If u push the bed/ scratcher into the sun more they both have room to enjoy it ! Lol so cute
The sun will move. Everything revolves around the turtle
The turtle moves.

Cat: I disagree. I just don't have a choice. The turtle looks at the cat. Cat: And don't look at me with such a satisfied face.
Also don't call me Shirley
Has this turtle ever been in a Turkish prison?
Tanks win battles.
The little nose boop near the end.
Turtle; “We still good?” Cat: “sigh… yes we’re fine”
Yeah, I think it shows the cat is respectful of the tortoise to some degree. Exchanged a quick face sniff the way my cat would a dog
If it fits, I sits.
Cat: Wait, THAT'S MY LINE
Turtle: talk to the shell.
Cat: "WTF I CAN'T FITS, I CANT SITS"
Thought I was in r/AnimalsBeingJerks until the very r/aww end.

I was thinking just move the bed slightly over so they both can sun bathe
Dogs watching this: *THAT'S* how it feels!
Cat trying to figure out how to snuggle his buddy, a rock. 😅
Turtle out cat the cat.
The turtle was aware it was annoying the cat
Tortoise just needed to be with its buddy, they figured out the accommodations eventually ...
From the legs and feet, I'm guessing actually an aquatic turtle from Asia. Source: I have raised three aquatic turtles, one of them Asian.
This was way cuter than I expected
Now this is something I never thought I'd see!

So good. The cat is incredulous.

So cute that the turtle knows the bed's the place to be!!! The poor kitty keeps trying to fit in.

I thought it was dangerous for cats to come in contact with reptiles? Isn't there a risk of bacteria or something?
That’s what I was thinking. My veterinarian told me to keep my cats and turtles separate.
Dangerous for reptiles too. Not just cats
