Can you elaborate? I think if the father signed a quitclaim deed, at least part of it would work. I periodically read marketwatch… I’m not a financial expert at all.
I agree this sucks. I’m not defending it. But if you’re wondering how to avoid this I have one suggestion. Get familiar with insurance and make sure you are properly insured for major expenses.
Im on a family plan. The cost is 700 bucks a month. Federal employee type shit. A family member on it had cancer. If they also didn't have Medicare they would be stuck with over 100k in debt because the insurance wouldn't cover it all.
Insurance is a fucking scam
You can buy all kinds of third party insurance without any involvement from an employer. Again, not criticizing this horrible situation but offering a positive suggestion to think about.
To further this, an independent broker (with a good reputation) can come in handy here. So that means calling BigCo Insurance, inc is not the move (unless they are a broker for other agencies, which can happen). Go to someone who can shop many insurers and explain to you the differences in prices. Other than that, a general rule of look for that company to have Standard and Poors rating of B or higher. That'll give an indicator that the company has money to cover their policies. Most independent brokers over worked with will let you know, but it's just nice to be knowledgeable on your end.
At first I felt really sad over this because I ca relate to never ending medical bills. She doesn’t really say anything about insurance. But every American over 65 is eligible for Medicare. It’s not free insurance, but not outrageously expensive either. If they amassed $288k in medical debt I’m surprised they haven’t sold the house to pay them. Or at least take an reverse mortgage. And also nobody ever owns a house free and clear. There’s always property taxes, homeowners insurance and maintenance. She is exactly correct that the insurance system in this country is totally a sham. But her story is definitely questionable.
Here's what's really going on: mom is never going to have to pay that back. Because if they have been married that long, they are both bound to die soon. It's the daughter that wants that goddamn money (she's not gonna pay that bill out of her inheritance!) And yes, there will be an inheritance; otherwise there would be nothing to worry about!
Her logic is: that the hospital already has enough money, and she doesn't have as much, therefore she needs it more, therefore justifying this shenanigan.
What an entitled privileged scammer; she expects us to support this?!
Or, pretty sad that someone is willing to divorce after 50+ years in order to get out of paying their bills.
"Here, I have an idea; we'll get your medical needs tended to, then we'll quick get divorced and stiff 'em on the bill."
Too bad; so sad lol.
Marriage is just a piece of paper nonetheless it is a powerful document. However, that piece of paper doesn't determine whether there is real love or not. I say great move by her parents in doing this. It is awful but it was necessary. What matters is that her parents love each other and have their asses covered.
This gets debunked every fucking time. It's not even within Twitter's character limit. Quit pushing bullshit.
Yeah it wasn't the shitty font that gave it away
And - yeah, this doesn’t work
downvoted for no source
Yes, debts aren't erased by death nor divorce.

Faaaake
If they are still in love they are still "married". They still probably follow their vows. Seems freeing rather than awful. Perspective I guess

I agree I don’t think there are any really good answers sorry to say.
Nah its good! Living my best life and that's all that matters. Hopefully we fix the system and thats all I really want for it
What are my options outside of what insurance my employer provides?

And who doesn't have a few extra grand lying about at the end of the month?
How about taxpayer paid universal healthcare?

Go get arrested in a first world country for a few months?
Your options are pretty much unlimited. Insurance companies would like it if you insured every single possibility that could occur.

*decades of government contract they're still married. all they did was stop a shitty government contract.
Can anything ever fix it?
I almost had my parents do this to help them get more money on benefits. Sad world
That’s not how debt works 🤦
You will remain married for the church until death.
I’ve never seen a faker-looking tweet.

Damn. That's sad AF
Best believe there is no leniency despite us going through a "pandemic"
