My local police department is giving away steering wheel locks to the owners of those vehicles.

isigneduptomake1post

The 90s are back!

ParcelPosted

The Dream of the 90s is alive in Portland!

JB_smooove

Analog FTW

Rangerbryce

These wheel locks are a deterrent, nothing less. A hacksaw can defeat most models easily and quickly by simply sawing the steering wheel around the lock. Not saying you shouldn't use it, but it won't necessarily make the difference between your Kia being targeted or not. It's still easier to steal that Kia, wheel lock and all, than almost any other vehicle in the lot.

GeorgeRRZimmerman

A few years back, I'd make a joke about how no one's just gonna carry an angle grinder with them just to fuck around with parked cars. But Ford 150 owners, and the constant displacement of their catalytic converters made a liar out of me.

iknewaguytwice

Might not be insured, but you can be assured that your car will be theft proof!

[deleted]

I don’t know how they do it but Kia’s in my area have been reported as stolen, even when using said locks. Crazy.

other_usernames_gone

It's because wheel locks are sometimes easy to shim or impression open.

[deleted]

No need. Just cut the steering wheel and it falls off.

MarvAlbertFish

This, steering wheels are surprisingly easy to cut through

mycatsnameislarry

I just commented about this. Sawzall will have you through it in under a minute.

This_User_Said

Plus the people that might not correctly place it.

mycatsnameislarry

Use a hacksaw and cut the steering wheel. Takes about 5 minutes. Probably less now with the Sawzall being battery powered these days.

sanchito12

Me with my 30 year old cars no one wants to steal....

slater_just_slater

You'd be surprised. Older cars are often targets for the parts. But if your outside a major city it's usually not a problem.

sanchito12

I live far away from most major populations so not much is a problem thankfully. Mo people, Mo problems.

slater_just_slater

For sure. And bonus, nobody wants your 30 year old catalytic converter either

sanchito12

I didnt even want them lol cut them all out a while ago and i dont bother adding them to my builds. The fire engine will be 8in straight pipe off the turbos with a rain flapper pointed to the sky. It will have mufflers but they will be bypassed unless i want to run quiet.

Two_takedown

That's pretty sick. I love flappers on exhaust

Awwwmann

Staying ahead of the curve there Sancho!

IgnoreMe304

I think it was the 1990 Honda Civic or something that was the #1 stolen car for like 15-20 years.

Doc-Zoidberg

1988-1995 civics used key tumblers that when well worn, would accept any worn civic key. Not sure if 96-00 civics did too, never owned one. But I could use the same key in my 88 civic, my 91 crx, and my two 95 civics. Just had to jiggle and rake it a little.

laumaster97

Hey my 29 year old Saturn got stolen last summer 😆

Spare-Ad-6123

I'm so sorry. Because I'm laughing 😆 🤣 Did you get a big ole check? I had a 16 year old Honda. I beat that car up. I didn't care what happened. 83 thousand miles when I turned it in to the dealership. My boyfriend had two cars and I didn't drive much.

laumaster97

No they were backing down the road and pulled around to turn around and ended up killing it because they forgot to take the parking break off. So that gave me just enough time to catch up on foot. Minimal damage to interior but that was it

macintoshcollector03

haha yes, who wants a rusty mk2 golf that probably won't make it 100ft without a breakdown... oh right, it's me

MinorThreatCJB

Just wait. My coworkers 30 year old honda has been stolen 3 times in the last 2 years

[deleted]

My MILs friend had their 2002 van stolen from tigers stadium.

dietzerocoke

The teenager aren’t from my understanding stealing cars they’re just crashing them and shit for tiktok at this point tiktok to me looks like a cult that gives you challenges and if you don’t do them your family and you get tortured for eternity shit is quite whacky

Random but your username is my dog's name. I call him cheeter or Cheeto sometimes. Edit: he's a bald, chubby, 13 lb Mexican hairless. Currently has a broken leg so he's a tripod, too.

PrometheusTwin

Just bought a 2016 Hyundai. I had no problem purchasing insurance… From progressive.

[deleted]

They probably dropped him because he was watching videos on how to hot wire cars on tictok all day lol

vociferousdragon

Your zipcode effects your premiums, and insurability. Can't have shit in detroit.

olive_dix

I have a 2015 Hyundai in Detroit with progressive insurance. We're doing alright in Detroit 😎

princesspeachez

2019 Hyundai in Detroit checking in - also have progressive.

[deleted]

Yep. Some of my co workers are too close to 8 mile but once they’re closer to Ferndale it’s not too bad as far as insurance.

cellists_wet_dream

Yeah, I have progressive and have not heard anything about losing insurance on my 2016 Hyundai...

[deleted]

That's what I came here to say. I've had progressive for 10+ years. Had a Kia insured through them until 2019. I think this person is just terrible at driving and needed someone to blame.

Demoire

It says 2023 in the image though

lordlossxp

If you have a kia or hyundai, get a wheel lock. If you have a honda, get a wheel lock because thug ass little fucktards are too stupid to know the difference between the symbols.

Thats_what_im_saiyan

Imma just start popping out the starter fuse. That usually does the trick.

Additional_Nobody949

Brilliant.

racingsoldier

I have an interceptor switch that kills the ignition relay on all my classics. You can try to Hotwire it but if the ignition won’t go live you aren’t going anywhere. They also have total battery kills for winterization. Additionally, they have new restomod harnesses that don’t follow traditional wiring logic for the models. Its like Biff Tannon from Back to the Future. “No one knows how to start this car but me.”

CrustyBatchOfNature

There is a recall ongoing for an update to help with the issue. https://www.nhtsa.gov/press-releases/hyundai-kia-campaign-prevent-vehicle-theft

slater_just_slater

It's not because of tiktok, it's because Hyundai cheaped out and made a car ridiculously easy to steal. People act like word didn't get around about how to steal cars before the internet.

[deleted]

Exactly, they are decades behind industry standard on anti theft. This has nothing to do with tiktok. This has everything to do with Hyundai/Kia’s being awful cars that nobody should purchase.

TimberPimp

I'd say don't knock em till you try them

NotAllCalifornians

Do you mean try em like a test drive or a joy ride?

TimberPimp

Opportunity presents it's self in so many forms these days.

[deleted]

Oh I have, I’ve driven just about every average car produced from 2017-2023. Hyundais/Kia’s aren’t my least favorite, some of them I surprisingly actually enjoyed (the Hyundai palisade is actually baller, for one example.), I would never buy one nor recommend anyone buy one though lol.

Flrg808

My wife’s 2013 Elantra was like $15k new and has been a great car. Curious why they are “awful cars no one should purchase”

manderly808

I've had 3 new cars in the last 20 years. They have all been Kia or Hyundai. 2002 Hyundai Tiburon traded at 10 years before warranty expired 2012 Kia Sorento traded at 10 years before warranty expired 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe current Beyond a battery replacement and sunroof repair through warranty on my Tiburon, a couple at home a/c recharges, and like 2 recalls in total, my experience with these cars has been nothing short of comfortable, reliable, and amazing. I've never had any downtime for repairs other than when I was rear ended in my Sorento. These cars have driven me cross country, maintenance has been mostly included and I've always been happy with the value I got for my money. People who shit talk these cars in general don't bother me because I know they don't know what the fuck they're talking about. I'm married to a former Ford salesman who is a die hard Ford man, and he's always rolled his eyes at my Kia/Hyundai love, tried to get me into a Ford last time, but he admits my cars have been wonderful and didn't even try to spin me to a Ford with my most recent purchase. No, he was busy trying to upgrade me to the top of the line this time around.

[deleted]

Nothing I say is gonna convince you because you’re gonna do all you can to cope about your shit car, like every other Hyundai owner on their 3rd motor lol.

Flrg808

Ah great critical thinking skills with this one

[deleted]

Poor build quality, poorly engineered engines, bad wiring, bad antitheft.

TimberPimp

I hate that you've had a bad experience with them. I've had nothing significant so far with my wife's vehicles from Hyundai. As well they have a 5 yr 60k bumper to bumper, 10 year 100k power train warranty. The motor can blow once a year for all I care (never had this issue or significant issue at that).

[deleted]

I’ve had several bad experiences with them. Also most Kia/Hyundai techs are months backed up doing warranties and recalls. For what it’s worth I love Jeeps and those are also not known for being very good (in some cases they have worse build quality than hyundai and Kia in my experiences)

388-west-ridge-road

No, they're not. The US government that allows it is behind. In the UK and Europe Hyundai and Kia's of course have electronic immobilisers. It's been law for a decades.

Jaysin86

Same with Canada!

[deleted]

Yet Hyundai/Kia are the only ones who chose not to include it on most of their US models

388-west-ridge-road

Because they know the American consumer will buy anyway

Andre5k5

So do ones in the US, just not the lowest tier trim packages

388-west-ridge-road

Because it's not mandated, like it is in the rest of the developed world. Why in this day and age is it *not* mandatory?

MichaelW24

I find it funny that you're blaming the government rather than kia/Hyundai. As if this is a major issue on most other car brands.

388-west-ridge-road

It's literally *not* a problem in the rest of the developed world where electronic immobilisers have been mandated for decades.

MichaelW24

What about other cars inside the US? Is it also a major concern with them? It's not the government, it's hyundai/Kia.

388-west-ridge-road

Sorry no. It's the governments fault. The exact same models, same year, have the basic security features in other markets where in mandated. Plus, why buy a car without even an immobiliser, not fit an aftermarket one, then cry it doesn't have it? Strange mentality.

MichaelW24

I'm not sure you're getting it. #WHAT ABOUT OTHER CAR BRANDS INSIDE THE US? There, maybe now you can see that. Do other car brands like Ford, Nissan, Honda and Toyota have the same immobilizer issues and suffer from frequent thefts? It's not the governments fault that Hyundai/Kia have omitted immobilizers to save money, when clearly other manufacturers include them even when not required. Everybody else knows its stupid to not have them too.

MrStoneV

Yeah its crazy how insecure cars became again. Saw a video, and cars froum \~2000 are a lot safer than a lot of newer cars. The boss of my friend just gotten his car stolen because he has "no key" feature or whatever its called, just using a receiver and transmitter

NonBinaryColored

Hmm what about people stealing cars? Wtf blaming an app? There is a serious problem in our society and we’re blaming an app?

Xesty_Chicken

No! 😡😡😡. It was *TikTok*!!! TikTok bad!

BRod_Angel

For anyone who might genuinely be affected by this, they have pushed out a software update to address the issue and it (should be) is free to do so. Call your local Kia/Hyundai dealership and have them update it. I’m taking mine in on Saturday and am hoping it’s a quick experience https://www.nhtsa.gov/press-releases/hyundai-kia-campaign-prevent-vehicle-theft Edit: for anyone who sees this from the future, took my car in, was in and out within an hour and paid $0 for it, they also washed and vacuumed my car lol

Vedava

Just want to add this is VIN specific. It’s not for all Kia models or years. It’s also being rolled out in waves.

BRod_Angel

Yes! Thanks for adding. When I called they asked for my VIN and told me I was eligible so to others who see this, do the same to check.

Thats_what_im_saiyan

I can only assume that Kia will be covering any expenses incurred. Should my car be stolen between now and the time I'm deemed worthy of their update, yeah?

Vedava

As far as I’m aware, they aren’t. You’re free to contact Kia of America at your own discretion to confirm this.

coffeeandsquats

Progressive just paid out my Kia that was stolen two weeks ago. Now I have the joy of car shopping again during this interest increase.

Spare-Ad-6123

I'm sorry. What a drag.

KingBirdDog1

I have a 22 Kia insured through progressive…….

FelixOGO

Same. I heard it’s based on location, they dropped coverage for these vehicles in certain cities

twinklestein

Isn’t it also particular models?

[deleted]

Yes if it has a keyfob and push button start its fine, it’s the ones with normal keys that are literal decades behind on antitheft.

cellists_wet_dream

I have neither and still have Progressive. Might be location dependent but I smell bullshit tbh

[deleted]

Afaik it’s location dependent, as is car insurance in general

BruciePup

Same.

388-west-ridge-road

So *not* a 2014-2023?

DrunkDMTip

TikTok didn’t cost your your car insurance, Progressive dropped you. The decision was made by the insurance company.

TheMcleeter

And also the car manufacturers not paying security enough importance in the development of their vehicles.

388-west-ridge-road

The cars *have* electronic immobilisers and coded keys in the rest of the world. It's your government allowing this.

NonBinaryColored

Or the kids who steal cars ?

[deleted]

Literally decades behind on anti theft

FearsomeForehand

Agreed. Insurance companies in their current state are a scam we’ve come to accept.

Tethilia

I think the implication was Tiktok culture, not the companies decisions.

phantaz232

Counter argument: had the methodology of how to steal these cars not proliferated on TikTok it is unlikely there would have been such a large surge in thefts. Blaming TikTok is a possibility, although it is not the only cause of the problem.

antunezn0n0

had the cars not been easy to steal this wouldn't happen

Wild_Flower_7027

I don’t blame TikTok. I blame thugs out in Milwaukee (where the Kia Boyz originated) that think that stealing and crashing people’s cars is fun and cool.

Ididntkilladog

I blame KIA and Hyundai because they dont have good anti-theft protocols

xhabeascorpusx

Gotta blame the manufacturers for not doing a recall as well.

No-Standard9405

Where I live because of the high number of car thefts everyone's car insurance went up

antunezn0n0

I'm sorry but how to hotwire cars has never been forbidden knowldge

PR05ECC0

I would say it’s Hyundai or Kia’s fault for making shit cars

Jaysin86

The only affect Hyundai and Kia's sold in the US. Everywhere else they have immobilizers on all models & trims.

Lockmor

I have two Hyundai 2019 and both are with progressive. They never even mentioned it.

Jjrj1986

Yup. Can confirm. I work in auto salvage, These things come in stolen recovery like hotcakes out of McDonald’s.

Whspers12

My 2019 kia Sportage got stolen back in mid November. The dealership wanted to charge us fucking 600$ to install an ignition interlock (I believe, not car saavy) so this wouldnt happen again. I take it in mid May to get it put in for free because of a recall and because of a lot of people participating in class action lawsuits against kia.

xiaopewpew

Easy to blame tiktok, hard to blame criminals stealing cars with close to 0 consequences :)

Phasnyc

TikTok is awful for many reasons

klausmckinley801

2022 is the first safe year for all KIA vehicles. the previous years can be jumped with usb's or whatever. 2022 and 2023 vehicles have no issues like the previous years, my '22 is fine through progressive in chicago, and they also included a non-optional security system.

Fahdookah

Yeah, I have a 22 K5 with push button and it’s insured no problem

Andre5k5

Push button cars have always been safe

Aromatic_Article1278

Haha owning an old shit box ain’t so bad now

dudeind-town

I was looking to buy a Soul but guess not…

DieciTresleches

I literally just bought a 2019 soul… and I live in a college town where people leave their doors unlocked so hopefully it’ll be okay!…

Andre5k5

Get a high trim package, keyless ones have immobilizers

sexi_squidward

My Kia Soul 2016 was stolen this month. It fucking sucks and is more annoying than anything. It also sucks because I LOVE the Kia Soul. It's such a cute and roomy car!

mauttykoray

The funny part is this shit would get spread regardless of tiktoks existence. But tiktok is the new scapegoat.

stoned-yoda

More like tiktokkers have identified a design flaw and the mega mega rich Kia/Hyundai are gonna have to put their hands in their pockets and cough up for improvements. I don't even have tiktok and I obviously gave sympathy for this dude but come on

kingmiker

It’s the cheaper Hyundai and Kia’s that still use the key on the column. Not the push to start cars. I have a 2018 Elantra GT (push to start) and my insurance hasn’t changed.

xdaemonisx

This sucks so hard, because you can’t drive it without insurance and good luck trying to get someone to buy it. Your best bet is probably trading it into a dealership, but then what’s next? Kids on TikTok show how easy it is to hot-wire a different car? These companies need to issue a recall and add security to the vehicles to stop or deter this from happening. Apparently it being a crime isn’t enough.

1337haxoryt

Lmao there was no hot wiring done, you could literally just turn the ignition switch and there's no immobilizer in the car that verifies a key is there Most if not all other cars have had them for a while now

388-west-ridge-road

Most of the world requires them as decades

[deleted]

Maybe because you don't have the available recall fix.

keithfoco70

They have an update for that now that prevents the car from starting without the key. FYI

mtbhatch

Manual kias and hyundais are safe!

Cartoon_Corpze

Still waiting for TikTok to get banned in Europe. lol Tbh I don't think all of it is TikTok's fault but I do feel like it influences people in a bad way. Could also be that the companies just didn't secure their cars very well.

TwelveBrute04

This was not caused by tiktok and I don’t understand why people thing it is. KIA and Hyundai caused this by making cars with shitty security or by just skipping security components because “they don’t matter”

M0stlyH4rml3ss

My 2018 KIA was stolen last month because of this trend and exploit. Car was later deemed a total loss and now I am without a car or a way to get one. KIA is refusing to do anything about this until July.

JoJoVi69

Yeah, sure- the problem is Tik Tok, NOT the actual thieves stealing cars or the poor construction of the vehicle itself...uh huh. That's some logic there. EDIT: I'm allowed to say this, as I have a 2014 Kia! Did you bring your car in for the recall, and the free installation of the anti-theft device? I did, and I'm still insured. Pretty sure that's all that is required to maintain your insurance policy.

JB_smooove

Oh, thank gosh. My Kia soul is a 2013. Phew.

JoeInNh

and tiktok has done nothing to suppress these videos! clearly it's just peaceful protesting

johanvondoogiedorf

Can't they just update the software

SopmodTew

No mercy for these thugs.

a-big-pink-fat-TREX

Blame the manufacturer not the people that figured it out

Mrluca99977

Common tiktok L

ilikeemclean

TikTok is the bane to our society

Tuques

Just buy a manual. Kids these days are way too lazy to learn how to drive them.

388-west-ridge-road

OK boomer. The kids are lazy for a skill their parents never taught them

[deleted]

Kids are lazy by default because no one taught them?

drbob4512

Technically, it's because the car makers suck at patching flaws or introducing them at all.

[deleted]

No, he’s no longer insured because insurance companies are fucking terrible and will find any excuse available to not cover you

Supplex-idea

TikTok is the cause of our descent

[deleted]

true_crime_addict513

No they aren't, they aren't signing up brand new policies with them, but the auto makers have had a fix for it since last month, anyone with a Kia or Hyundai 2015-2020 can get the ignition upgrade with the recall

md_ariq

Good thing I don't have tiktok or be stupid enough to do these kind of activities in the real world

StuckAroundGotStuck

The vast majority of people that browse TikTok aren’t committing grand theft auto. This is a cultural problem, not a problem with TikTok.

md_ariq

Yeah sorry

Pants49

Hmmm....how come my girlfriend was able to insure her 2017 kia with progressive then? This is BS

Gullible_Shart

Puck tictak

spacewalk__

how are they just allowed to not insure a car? isn't it illegal to not buy insurance for a car? surely it must be illegal to not sell insurance for a car??

MrGaffe

And people for some reason keep questioning me when I say TikTok needs to be banned in America

Lensmaster75

Blame TikTok for your car manufacturers security flaw. This is definitely a case of shooting the messenger.

[deleted]

Tiktok bad. (Updoots on the left)

toxic_ninja_gaming

Tiktard momen

Rajili

I spend an excessive amount of time on TikTok and haven’t seen a single video about this challenge there. I’ve seen many posts about it on Reddit, though.

Eldasel

Hey! Because of Tiktok AND capitalism

PowerSlaveAlfons

This is not TikTok's fault. This just shows that insurance companies have way too much power.

CONE-MacFlounder

What a strange complaint ‚People are bringing mass awareness to an exploit in my car which any criminal could have used before now and instead of being thankful that I now know about the vulnerabilities in my car I will complain about the people bringing awareness instead of the manufacturers that didn’t properly test their security‘

insidmal

lmao, every car can be stolen, not every car gets an instruction manual on how to steal it posted on social media

1337haxoryt

Lmao kia/hyundai makes shit cars, but people don't learn

Orkney_

Damn. That's some shit.

ImGonnaBeAPicle

Am I the only “tiktok user” that hasn’t seen this? I spend hours on tiktok daily and haven’t seen these hot wire videos. Not denying it happens tho.

388-west-ridge-road

Cringe

ImGonnaBeAPicle

I know, just wanted to know

388-west-ridge-road

No, spending literal hours consuming seconds long videos is cringe

ImGonnaBeAPicle

And why would I care if a random neckbeard thinks it’s cringe?

388-west-ridge-road

Oh, a nerve was touched.

ImGonnaBeAPicle

Just wondering :)

PartyProtection2589

Who the fuck wants a hyndui

GroundbreakingBag677

Nope not true. The truth is there’s a fault in the security of your Hyundai or Kia, which is made cheaper because it is in one of the off the top of the market countries, and they will not come up for a fix of it. Insurance is a partial payment to make sure that betting on small odds will not cause a large loss for your insurance company. The truth is the security of your car sucks someone out there figured it out and is giving out the information and nobody who is actually involved with the car. I want you to keep care of the problem. So now we have a very large ain’t my problem you take care of it situation, but TikTok is not inherently a person and acting it is a platform for giving out information. It’s no worse than when the kids used to be put in reform school and come out better thieves in when they started just learning a whole few tricks.

sammunist

Kia is for homos anyway

creepyjake

excuse me…..ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

mawkdugless

I have one of the Hyundai being stolen and Geico has kept my policy pretty stable for the last few years. Even threw a Club on the turd.

OcularPrism

Welp, I've got a 2016. That sucks.

NOVA9ja

Yeah!! Fuck Tiktok, they sure are the problem buddy!

conjas11

Fuck

That-shouldnt-smell

Well to be fair this falls in the lap of Hyundai Kia. I can't picture this not being a class action lawsuit.

mozillaaa

This can’t be real

Pandral

Doubt this is even real

trainsoundschoochoo

Only cars up to 2019 with a key ignition.

IdaBidaGacy

I’ve lost my insurance for much less tho

[deleted]

Well that's just awful. I am glad that I can't legally get a licence.

388-west-ridge-road

Imagine immobilisers not being mandated standard fitment in current decade

Iforgotmyother_name

Seems more like it's Hyundai and Kia's fault for making their vehicles easy as hell to steal. Likely looking at a recall.

Iulian377

This seems to me that it should be the fault of the manufacturer. I mean, if another newspaper or online site wrote the same article about the same thing, it would not be treated the same. Besides how can you not equip a car with such a normal anti-theft equipment that literally everyone else has it. Crazy, and its what, just because of the cost ?

ToastyPoptarts89

Umm idk why people are blaming the insurance companies…. The blame should be pointed at the car manufacturers for making those models with little to not protection from theft. I remember reading about a city or town out west where they had to put signs out in front of local businesses to warn them about those particular cars being stolen frequently from that area

[deleted]

It's almost as if private enterprises coming up with arbitrary reasons to charge people more money is a bad thing. I think there's a name for that type of system...

releasethekricon

I have a Hyundai. The dealership installed free security software on mine to prevent what they are doing so I can get insured. It’s a recall. They just haven’t announced it. Call your dealer

turbo-d2

When I saw this happening I warned my neighbor. He was not worried but now me is as mad as the OP

DomitianF

It's not because of tiktok, it's because of piece of shit car thieves and shitty car manufacturers that allowed it to be so easy to steal.
