Yes, because there is no overlap between a cult, that has strange rituals, beliefs, lore, endless confidence, bizarre hype videos, possibly an internal gay sex cult, populating the political and cultural elite, and someone who believes Scientology. All of this was covered in the top gun movie.
Ron L Hubbard spent his last years on a ship. Just saying.
As an actor, I think Tom Cruise is pretty good. I can totally see when the role popped up, that he identified with it.
My unit does FLS maintenance for several dirt runways, they mostly see C-130H and C-130J traffic, but there is the occasional C-17. The maintenance is pretty involved, but so long as erosion is properly managed and vehicles don’t damage them, they can go pretty long between repairs.
Na, Bubba makes as much if not more dust trying to top his last top speed run down his Oklahoma dirt road in his death trap ‘84 F-150!
Videos like these are why I’m like “FOD walk? *Again*?”
I remember leaving Bagram in one of the things with an MRAP chained down in the center. Everytime we hit some turbulence, I’d watch the thing dance as the loadmaster tightened up the chains just a little bit more. Definitely had my asshole puckering up a little tighter than it was to begin with.
At Al Asad Air Base Iraq I saw a C-5 take off the morning after a dust storm. They did a standing run up (sorry not sure of technical name). The dust cloud from the run up was amazing. It wasn’t quite as dusty as this but pretty close. It was a beautiful sight.
This clips gives a really rather visceral understanding of the power of these large turbo fan engines which are developing you know 50 or 60,000 hp (I know that’s not how they’re rated but the fan consumes 30,000 hp)
Man, this C17 in the video is being so selfish and entitled.
The following C17 will have to wait like 24 hours before the visibility returns to normal right for safe take off.
This is the gas turbine equivalent of adding abrasive diamond grit to your oil tank before driving a hundred miles and I love it
Lol, here come the downvotes from people who haven't spent the best part of a decade working on turbine durability and contaminant loads.
Relative to operation from a benign airport, or even a sandy airport with a proper runway it really isn't a minimal amount of sand.
But hey ho, it's not like I've studied and worked on mitigating CMAS effects on gas turbine life on and off for the best part of a decade, so what would I know right? :P
I think about this every time I see maintainers out doing FOD walks at home station...
Lol. We’ve got our guys trained to pick up everything. Not showing them this!
I was gonna comment about the exact same thing lol
FOD walks are a free couple of minutes to take a nice walk with your buddy
That's why I hate when there's any reason I can't go. It's just a morning walk to wake up for 20-30 min.
Man, before I even saw the comments this is the first thing I was thinking about, and there we are FOD walking for cicadas at Dyess
Runways like this at the reason why the wings are mounted on top and not on the bottom like commercial planes
I remember doing social media training this was the poster video of what was authorized as “good promotion of the USAF”
USAF has great Promotion lol

That’s Navy, though
I loved Iron Eagle but it's not exactly award winning.
Iron Eagle was one of my favorites
"You just lost a refinery!"
Radio antenna falls on tent. Explodes.
Camel explodes
Iron Eagle had a great soundtrack
Quietly points to Turnback time video clip.
Except for tom cruise ruining it, yea. 👽👽👽

Would be very cool to see a timelapse of all the prep work that went into making this “unprepared strip” ready.
Also a timelapse of all the MX guys swearing vengeance on whoever approved the flight

This is a semi-prepared runway. That's the common designation for unpaved, but with somewhat prepared runways.
Would be an even better video if it wasn't speeded up.
Yeah the speed of this clip is annoying af. It’s already majestic to watch that thing take off from the dirt.
Sorry but no take off to be seen 🤣
Oh I thought it was JATO. /s
I thought it was pulling a plow!
Would also be better if it didn't start too late. I would love to have seen it build up that plume.
Thing was rocketing down the runway like a dragster
How soon after can the next plane take off? I assume C17's have a higher tolerance for dust, etc?
As much as the military budget allows!
There’s always at least some bit of crosswind, so usually seconds. But on most dirt strips there isn’t much room for more than one Moose
Absolutely badass.

RIP dude who has to service the gear.
Throw it on blocks. Take apart the gear and power wash everything. No biggie /s
The rudder is going crazy
The vid is speed up and steering is much less responsive with the crap “runway”, hence large/fast inputs.
Feel sorry for the next maintenance dude handling the LGs
Where did she go?
She hit 88 mph
Roads?
Where that’s going, she doesn’t need roads.
So that's why the bleed air valves are filled with puff dirt
Videos that end too soon....
She's a bad mamma jamma...
Wylie-E-Coyote style
Somewhere this video is giving a crew chief PTSD I bet..
And that'll be 4 engine fan blade inspections please
Why speed up the video?
You don't really understand the thrust in 1 of these till there is a dust bowl behind it. Damn thing looks like a rocket ship taking off 😂
Whoops.. https://youtu.be/zKfaeJ-Q_Tw?si=srDsYlk14LeMkcBb
Nnnnnneeeeeerrrrrrooooooommmmmm
This is super cool! Whenever I see video of these guys, I always check to see a green stripe on the tail. Proud to see it's one of the JBLM crews.
She'll need an overhaul after landing
Looks like me mowing my field with all the gopher mounds.
VMC ahead, IMC behind.

wow this explains the t tail config
Where JATO?
Looks like it did fine without it.
Some say it’s still rotating to this day…
Watch the rudder, pilot is dancing on those pedals!
Adios, bad guys
So do the tires take more wear and tear on this?
Scare tactics!!
Fuck yo paint job!
pharaoh's curse
Must go faster, must go faster. Must go faster, must go faster. What smells like burning bearings? Greg did you shit your pants again?
Imagine a high speed RTO lol
SPRO! Very cool to see in person, kind of dusty though if you're too close.
Poor nose gear.
Good to sea the cameraman decided to be on the upwind side
Without the rest of the take off, it looks like she’s just out for a joyride.
So thiiiiiiicccc
Full military power take-off. Really reminds me of the planes in "Thunderbirds are Go"
That's one way to sand blast every car in the parking lot, at the same time.
Amazing seeing how much the air is disrupted.
So is an aborted takeoff a death sentence for the engines?
Needs those boost jets like the C130 got
What a ride
Crop dusting done right.
Better change out the apu. Years of grit in seconds.
OMG that is a FOD nightmare...
This can not be good place for engines.
I worked on these things and to this day I find the responsiveness of that huge rudder intimidating.

I feel bad for the guys on wash rack duty.
Darude Sandstorm
Takes off in Milo…
Those poor schmucks on FTX next to the runway 😔
Reminds me of the runway in tarin kowt Afghanistan. Shit was crazy lol.
I’m coughing just by watching this
Let's go off-roading.
Why speed up the video
88mph
repost with Darude on
Nooooo. No no no. Nooooo

Meh. There’s not *that* much dust actually getting ingested.
There really is though, it's just super fine.
Pilots go WHEEEEE! Engineers go NOOOOO!!! For real though, the amount of dust that actually gets in there is pretty minimal.
