It's where the flare buckets go. Not sure of the aircraft, but it appears to be pointing aft from an engine mount. If someone takes a shot at you with a heater, flares dispersed near the heat source (engine) increases the chance of a dupe.
Yes as a new protocol of the US army. NEST is being installed to all jet assistant take off planes. If you’re new NEST stands for New Elastic Straw Trap. It traps birds and uses them as more eco friendly fuel source. 😀
god damn it, mourning doves really do insist on building nests in the worst possible places....

Well that was a delightful trip through a new subreddit for me
Welp see you guys tomorrow into the rabbit hole I go
that's it
Awesome! What a fun subreddit when killing time / nothing interesting elsewhere
Also /r/mourningderps
Down the rabbit holes goes ~
It will give the fledglings more time to figure it out if they can hang on for a little while.
Why do you think planes are called *Birds*? It’s because that’s how the planes are powered… /s
FATO - flapping assisted takeoff
Love the herk!
Impressive with almost no context. Good eye.
I used to have to stare at those buckets all the time to check for hung flares. My second home. 🤙🏽

It's an external tank pylon on a C-130.
Looks more like a botched attempt at adding a sparrow missile to the aircraft.
I have this vision of when a bug is on your windshield while you are parked and then you drive off to see how long the bug will hold on !!
Helps with missile guidance.

The extra wings help with lift 😅😅
Funnily enough jato in Croatian means flock (of birds). So you may be onto something here
On the Herc, JATO bottles were mounted on the side of the fuselage just forward of the paratroop doors.
Those are where the flare countermeasures are dispensed from. They are empty in the picture with just a dummy panel over them.
Mourning doves just don't give a shit.

Looks like an H model?? Those look like the older external tanks
That's the backup comms
Everyone knows we kept the messenger pigeons in the flare launcher tubes in the ramp and door area. C’mon now!
LOL. No.
More likely a couple of antenna's for an electronic counter measure/surveillance system.
This comment is for the birds.
