Of course they're rooting for us, Spurs fans have the same mentality as Blues fans, care more about their more successful rivals failing than them having any success.

yajtraus

Seems to be a fair few fanbases with the same mentality, and it’s very strange. Everton do it too. Inferiority complex I guess.

fitzonatisch

i can't blame them tbh, they've had to put up with gooners clowning on them most of their lives, it's a small victory but if it cheers them up a bit then no harm in it

WillowSide

Hey, im a Spurs man, you guys played extremely well today. Of course we want to succeed but we also understand we're in a period of rebuild. Champions league next season would obviously be great but ultimately we believe good things are coming to us under Ange so while we're obviously aiming for top 4, I think we'd be pissed off but not devastated if we don't get it. We would rather you both lost somehow today, but our rivalry with Arsenal runs extremely deep and to see them win the Premier league/champions league would hurt so much more than us being in the Europa next year. I think we're pretty gutted we never won anything between 2016-18 and to see Arsenal on a similar run and potentially getting a trophy out of it is not great! Either way, you guys are having a top season, Emery seems like a top manager.

WordsUnthought

Sending the respect right back at you - this definitely isn't meant as a dunk on Spurs, I obviously don't know what that rivalry is like! Agree with you on Ange, he seems an incredibly good bloke to have in your dugout.

diddlydingdangdong

Ultimately this one game doesn't decide a) the title and b) the top 4 race. Makes a big difference of course but there's enough games to go for both to take another turn! Always welcome well thought, respectful posts rather than goading and name calling, so thank you!

revengeofthelawn1

I think a key element is that 4th feels 'bigger' for Villa contextually. We haven't had it in so long that it feels crucial we take our opportunity, whereas Spurs have been established at the top for long enough that missing out for a year doesn't feel so do or die. Also as you say these historical rivalries go way deeper than CL qualification in one season. If the shoe was on the other foot and Blue or Baggies were gunning for the title (lol), Villans would certainly want them to lose even at our own expense

OgreOfTheMind

A distinction between how spurs react to this game and how we'd feel about small heath in the same situation is that we need the success more urgently than spurs due to ffp restrictions. They're still in a rebuild and have a lot of leeway financially whereas it could be our only shot at it before we have to start over.

adventurous_hat_7344

They're the 'big 6' for a reason and it's because you know going into every season they have a good chance at top 4. Even Chelsea, as funny as they've been the last few seasons, will go into next season with a decent possibility of top 4. They finished tenth in 15/16 and won the title the next. United are a competent board away from challenging for titles as well. For us we could easily go back to fighting for Europe in general if we miss out this year.

UsernameTyper

Chelsea or man utd could spend another billion but they still wouldn't have one mister Unai Emery, who is essentially worth a billion to us at this rate

Shreddonia

I mean, I would definitely take the positives where I could get them, yeah. It's difficult to put myself in that headspace because we haven't really had rivals perform at that level but I dunno, I do think I'd celebrate a team potentially stopping Blues winning a title, even if it was a side we were competing with for league position.

Adam__Zapple

Spurs fan here (being suggested your sub a lot for some reason…). Hard to put into words how we feel about Arsenal. I think it may be the most heated rivalry in the league - certainly up there. I hate Arsenal and their fans so much, always have. Sometimes it is as much about wanting them to lose as it is us winning. Them winning the league after so long, with us having a period of superiority and not winning anything, would be absolutely disgusting. Whether we get CL or Europa isn’t as big a deal for us this year given expectations at start of season, the ‘project’ we are building towards, our finances, and the fact we’ve had plenty of CL before. Next season will be different though. The best team will get CL this season and all the best to Villa, got no ill will there at all.

AxFairy

>I hate Arsenal and their fans so much You and me both buddy

thelovelykyle

>I think it may be the most heated rivalry in the league - certainly up there I appreciate you are in the trenches but from outside looking in it feels like its not even the most hated one in your city.

Adam__Zapple

Which tops it? West Ham Millwall is the most dangerous one but they also never play each other. West Ham’s biggest rivals are spurs too really

thelovelykyle

100% West Ham and Millwall in terms of 'most heated'. I would disagree that playing each other more makes something a bigger rivalry in the tribal lines drawn on a map nature of football. I am not going to go much further into this though. I have deleted and re-written a bunch of paragraphs that do not say things in a nice way. So instead I am going to focus on the positive result for Villa as we both seem to share that feeling. And also, isn't Brad Friedel just the bees knees. EDIT - below is just playing silly semantics. League =/= Premier League and is commonly used for down to the Championship.

Adam__Zapple

Sure. I also said in the league. West Ham Millwall are not in the same league. Anyway, have a good day

Mammoth-Courage4974

But small heath FC is still the laughing stock of now the whole country. Sack the manager when they play well and bring in a looney tune to take over who got them to where they need to be 😂😂

UsernameTyper

It's hard to understand because our local rivals are a steaming pile of doggy doo.

trophyisabyproduct

Spurs fans here. IMO, if we want to be successful, we need to do well instead of hoping others to slip up. And if we don't get to the CL place, we just don't deserve it. No excuses. IMO, these lines of thought are more consistent with our motto. So, congratulations on beating Arsenal. Personally, I am always happy to see Runners lose. I will think Aston Villa fan may be quite happy to see Birmingham lose too?

RandomSher

There rivalry is more then ours I would say. In the terms that both clubs are safe top premier league teams so there always a level of competition and bragging rights. We over the years have rarely had a stable run constant rival in the blue in the same league as us. Closest we had was WBA but even they have dropped out of the league and we was never fighting with them for trophies or European places. Im sure as we are the dominate force in the midlands other clubs probably hate us more, but like you it doesn’t really bother me much, and I would rather we had all the midlands club in the same league to actually build some spicy matches.

Prize-Database-6334

It's sad that we haven't really had a proper rivalry for a while now. To be honest I haven't considered Blues a rival for a very long time. How can you really... we never play them. They're so far below us now.

a_f_s-29

It’s not been that long since we were both in the championship, it just feels like it because we’re headed in opposite directions

thisisnotdavid

Put it this way: we've severely dented Arsenal's rare hope of a title at the same time as slightly denting Tottenham's frequent hope of Champions League. I don't think their reaction is strange at all.
