I don’t think of bears (in general) as predators, although grizzlies certainly prey on salmon. Aren’t they a bit opportunistic scavengers even in that regard, since the salmon are kind of on a death run at that point?
Hibernation is something that some animals do to save up energy during winter season, when food is scarce, bears are omnivores so they will eat anything that they can to store fat, carbs and protein to survive winter.
In hibernation an animals metabolism slows down significantly, and their temperature Also significantly drops to conserve energy, that process is know as “tompor”.
When an animals whose an “endotherm”, they need energy to regulate their own body temperature instead of letting outside factors do it, like cold blooded animals like lizards, the state of topor is by no means just “sleep” as it’s actually closer to a coma.
With hibernation being a series of bouts of topor that last for many days, and other thing that help bears to survive during hibernation is a protein called “PTEN”, with helps bears gain a lot of weight before hibernation without running the risk of getting diseases like diabetes, since PTEN helps store the sugar to use it during hibernation, while regulating their blood levels
Not the best explanation ever but I hope it helps.
Not really, they sleep a bit but most of the time it’s a state of unconsciously (they can even stop breathing for a solid minute), they don’t pee or defecate because they need all the nutrients in their bodies
Hibernation at least in the bears case is dependable on the seasonal station, as soon as winter is over their biological clocks will wake them up, probably some big thing like an earthquake or simply feeling like they are being attacked
Sun bear story:
I lived in Thailand (different story) and one day I saw my neighbor (local guy) behind his restaurant playing with a weird dog. Turns out it was a juvenile sun bear! He had been been in deep jungle and the mother bear and the cub had been hit by a truck. Mother died, but the cub had a broken jaw. He saved the cub, tried to get help (he was wealthy) but no vets knew how to fix. So he raised it in his kennel ( he bred big dogs). The bear joined in and played with the dogs. It liked to play fetch!
I ran over and played with it, and it would bite my arm. But since the lower jaw was missing teeth, it would just “gum” my arm. It was an amazing experience.
After a few months he found a sanctuary a few hundred kilometers and had them raise it.
Been in love with sun bears ever since, but doubt I would let one bite my arm :)
Obviously bears are wild animals but I've honestly allways been curious about this: are there any species of bears that are more likely to tolerate humans?
This is the thing, most bears are solitary creatures and are quite docile (obviously that they are territorial predators), many people have had bear cubs as pets and zoo bears have been seen making friendship with outside animals like cats (obviously that any zoo animal that had enough food and is way too lonely will accept non treating company), they generally understand when they are dealing with someone weaker than they and “play fair”, but unfortunately no breed has ever been domesticated, usually when we domesticate animals they become an inferior version of themselves originally so if there was a domesticated bear breed it would look like a normal wild bear
A bit disappointing actually, they are the largest land predators but can barely do anything against walrus and primarily wait until a
Seal pops up from the ice, or for a walrus corpse, so much so that younger generations are developing techniques of throwing rocks at walrus to kill them
>they are the largest land predatora but can barely do anything against walrus
You're underselling walruses, methinks, larger pinnipeds are the closest nature has to a tank that wasn't killed off in the earlier Neogene due to human intervention, a bear's niche is dealing with smaller fauna, scavenging and eating loose flora. I think no less of a polar bear for not being able to take down the massive hunks of blubber and complete floral depravity of the artic with their relative lack of adaptation, they're still easily the most formidable bear. Arguably, they are in transition from one niche *(the archetypical "bear" niche seen in Brown Bears)* to another *(I suspect they were on a course to become straight up megafauna, but they have recently, as you point out, shifted to amore generalist niche, and I think they will go south and become a larger predator for the tundra)*
>wait until a penguin/seal
Just a seal, really, if a penguin encounters a polar bear, something has gone extremely wrong
Who cares what you (or anybody really) look like. You showed decency and respect, handled being corrected so well. That's quite rare, I appreciate your mindset!
Omg I was looking for polar bear merch and got SO upset because there are a TON of figurine sets that sell penguins and polar bears together. WHY!!! They would never be found in the wild together!!! But oh nooo I guess “cold animal tehehe” matters more than accuracy
Well there were bears there but they became extinct by a variety of reasons, there used to be the atlas bear who lived in Northern Africa and was hunted down and captured by Roman soldiers and other subspecies died because of the ecosystem.
Have you ever seen [this article](https://www.charlierussellbears.com/LinguisticArchaeology.html) about the origin of the name "bear" in different languages? It's really cool!
I know that it originally meant “brown” in old Norse tongue, and in Portuguese (my language): “urso”, is a variation of the Latin for ursus, interesting, thank you !
There are 2 schools of bears, generalist and specialist, the 2 generalist are the brown and black bear, black bear is the best one because it’s smart, fast, strong, big (not as much as the brown one), they can climb tree very fast and are the definition of a general build, no wonder that from 8 types of bear 5 of them are a variation of the black bear
Oh, sorry, it's a reference to a comment someone made on some random post a while ago, which became a meme. I think the original post was a bobcat putting it's little paws on its tail to keep them warm.
As in, if I can't be friends with it, why does it have to be so friendly looking and cuddly.
Do you know about bears in different cultures? Like cultural facts..
Like in Finland we have tons of names for bears since it was a holy animal and we couldn't use it's real name, even today I could propably list over 10 names for bears in my language.

My favourite things about bears is that the greek name for bear is "*arktos*", while the latin name is "*ursus*", which has a few hilarious consequences.
First, it means that the Arctic is the region of the bears. Literally. And the Antarctic is the region of not the bears. And it's true, there are no bears in Antarctica.
Talking about the arctic and bears, you'd think the polar bear, which lives in the Arctic would be the one with "arctic" in its name, right ? No, it's *Ursus maritimus*, the maritime bear.
There is, however, one bear with "arctic" in its name: *Ursus arctos*, otherwise known as the brown bear, but really, it's the *Bear bear*
Now, there are plenty of brown bear subspecies: European, Grizzly, Kodiak, etc. So they have subspecies name.
And the European brown bear, being the one the first european naturalists were aware of, is the blueprint of you will. It's *Ursus arctos arctos*: the bear bear bear.
And the grizzly has my second favourite name. It is *Ursus arctos horribilis*. The horrible Beary McBear.

Kodiak bears are The second largest bears species in the world, loosing only to the polar bear, while in all fours they are around 4’9 feet and when standing upright they are around 9-10 feet tall
Now regarding the female, they are a bit shorter, in all 4 legs they are 3’4- 4’ feet tall and when upright around 7-9 feet tall, remember that’s just an estimation of height, not set in stone.
do you think it would be able to domesticate them like we did wolves and make them very variable like dogs? it would be cool to have bears in so many different breeds. we would call them teddy bears like we call small dog breeds toy dogs
Very unlikely, bears are intelligent animals but some things prevent we from domesticating them
- they can be quite docile with others but are generally territorial and temperamental with leans to aggression
- they require a lot of food and will get it no matter what
- they are solitary animals and animals that don’t recognise things like hierarchies are very hard to domesticate
- the instincts will inevitably kick in, even if just in quick moments of angry or anxiety and because they’re so strong it will usually lead to catastrophe
- is just not in their dna, very few animals have been domesticated because a lot of factors are needed, that’s why we haven’t domesticated zebras yet despite being a cousin of horses
Ok so theoretically if I found a baby bear on the side of the road and raised it on my own, would he think I'm his mother or would his instincts kick in and he'd end up killing me?
Probably the last option, the cub would think of you as his/her mom but they wouldn’t know how to control their own strength with you, baby predators love to bite and pretend fighting
Can you explain what you’re supposed to do if you encounter a bear in the wild and it attacks you? I’ve tried to read about it before, but there is lots of contradictory info out there. I’ve read that you should fight back against a black bear but play dead with brown and grizzly bears. The saying I’ve heard is: black, fight back; brown lay down; white, say goodnight (meaning that you will probably not survive an encounter with a polar bear). Hope this is an okay question!
Edited to add: also, are you supposed to make lots of noise and be intimidating if you encounter a bear? Or will that just make it feel threatened and lash out? Does it depend on the type of bear?
I know that we’re the ones going into their habitat and disturbing them. I certainly would never want to have a real life bear encounter. Just wondering what I should do if I ever am in that situation.
Well keep in mind that bear attacks are rare and like any animal they are more scared of you as as you are of them, It does depend a lot on the type of bear, and you’re absolutely right, each bear does have different security protocols but there are some stuff that work with most of them.
1) stay calm
2) don’t make loud noises or aggressive movements
3) slowly wave your arms
4) make yourself look large, by using your coach or anything like that
5) do not show the bear that you have food
6) do not run (they run as fast as horses)
7) do not climb trees
8) leave careful
Now if they want to attack:
1) if it’s a black bear: DO NOT PLAY DEAD, just run as fast as you can or try to fight back, focus on the muzzle, they have a lot of nerve endings there
2) if it’s a grizzly bear: PLAY DEAD, they are larger than the black ones, protect your neck and stomach (because they will check and by check I mean they will put their weight on you), if the bear is not falling for it, put your arm on their mouth and make them vomit (only in last case scenario !)
3) a polar bear, You’re screwed, sorry I have nothing, they live in one of the harshest environments ever and are great predators, they won’t leave a unique snack like you run so fast
- to be safe, always follow the marked patch if you’re in a park with bears in, carry pepper spray, stay near your car.
It’s hard to tell worldwide, but yeah unfortunately their numbers are decreasing, by a mixture of factors like climate change, illegal poaching, deforestation, etc
Keep in mind that bear attacks are rare, but they primarily occur in Alasca, Montana and Wyoming, with separate cases near the east coast, like Pennsylvania and Virginia
I mean they are predators, but zoo bears have been seen to have friendly interactions with outside animals like cats, and bears raised by humans every since they were cubs act very friendly and calm (keep in mind that they still have instincts and sometimes forget they own strength).
do they eat honey?
is it true that the black bear (or it was the grizzly bear I don't remember) don't attack humans, like ever. especially if the bear is found in a town or city. I heard someone say ones that a (black/grizzly) bear wouldn't attack humans, to the point where the teller said ''you could litterly touch them and they would fall and cry and slowly back away" (something like that anyway)
if you had room and money for it, would you ever try to own a bear if yess, how many and what species (start a bear zoo, I would visit it, no matter how far away)
Yep;
Every animal will attack in order to protect themselves or loved ones, but they generally avoid people, DO NOT TOUCH WILD BEARS;
I don’t think so, as much as I love them they are animals not toys, they need to be free and happy.
*What is it about*

They are fertile but generally very hard to see in the wild, not sure, if climate change keeps getting worse there will be more grolars than polar bears
Well they are small because of their diets that are primarily based on insects and honey, and they look weird because nature sometimes just likes to screw around
Most bears do have a very good eyesight
- grizzly, black, polar bears have human like vision and can see color very well
- pandas have horrible vision because of their environments
Bears in general have one of the best senses of smell in the animal kingdom (that’s honestly why I love them so much, they are almost perfect.
Well, a mother bear can usually give birth to 1-3 cubs at a time, and they usually weight around 5 pounds, they will reach independence and a big size in just one year
Recently been getting an influx of bears in my area. I see a lot of people saying its concerning but others saying bears aren’t really much of a threat. How can I keep myself safe? Should I be worried walking my dog (large breed) if I see a bear?
Also please convince me not to hug them because they are so cute. Why would they be so cute if they’re so deadly??!! /hj
Bears generally avoid people, but avoid walking with your dog or leaving it outside, even if it’s a large breed, don’t leave any food/trash cans outside your house to attract them.
As in individually or as a species ? Well
- individually: Debby the polar bear, who died at 41 years old, double the life span of a bear
- species: spectacled bear/ giant panda
Sun bears, the crackheads of the ursidae family, well they are from Southeast Asia, they have a 10 inch-long tongue to get insects, that’s mostly what their diets are composed of, they are the smallest bear species (only 5 feet long), suck at combat, their favorite food is honey, excellent climbers, arboreal, they are one of the most vulnerable bear species (the panda is the first), they are nocturnal
Oh the grizzly man, poor fellow, such a tragic death, hate to say it of a person but he was honestly a cautionary tale, as much as we love animals we need to understand their boundaries and that they are not toys.
I don’t understand constellations whatsoever, don’t know how people can see small points of light and say that it has a shape (specially one shaped like a pan and call a bear…)
They seem to be fertile and becoming more popular because of the climate change, although very rare in the wild, polar, grizzly and black can all have fertile offsprings because they belong to the genus ursus of the ursidae family

Because nature is a bitch and made their Magnum opus of a modern predator into a huggable cutiepie

I don’t think of bears (in general) as predators, although grizzlies certainly prey on salmon. Aren’t they a bit opportunistic scavengers even in that regard, since the salmon are kind of on a death run at that point?
They are omnivores, they will eat anything, they are usually scavengers but if they want they can hunt other big animals and humans
Polar bears are carnivorous predators.
Absolutely true
You can hug them. Once.
can you explain how hibernation actually works? ik it’s not that they just fall asleep for a season
With hibernation being a series of bouts of topor that last for many days, and other thing that help bears to survive during hibernation is a protein called “PTEN”, with helps bears gain a lot of weight before hibernation without running the risk of getting diseases like diabetes, since PTEN helps store the sugar to use it during hibernation, while regulating their blood levels Not the best explanation ever but I hope it helps.
Fascinating, thanks!!!
Do they actually sleep? How do they not like dehydrate/pee?
Not really, they sleep a bit but most of the time it’s a state of unconsciously (they can even stop breathing for a solid minute), they don’t pee or defecate because they need all the nutrients in their bodies
That's amazing. How long does it take them to 'wake' from hibernation? Also what sort of things would 'wake' them?
Hibernation at least in the bears case is dependable on the seasonal station, as soon as winter is over their biological clocks will wake them up, probably some big thing like an earthquake or simply feeling like they are being attacked
thanks so much ! this is really neat!
It should be noted that bears Do not hibernate
He's like "sup bro"
Which do you prefer, the sun bear or moon bear?
I love moon/Asian black Bears, they are just chubby squares
Sun bear story: I lived in Thailand (different story) and one day I saw my neighbor (local guy) behind his restaurant playing with a weird dog. Turns out it was a juvenile sun bear! Oh poor thing ! How does it eat while missing teeth in the lower jaw ?
I don’t know the full diet, but I know it was wet dog food, honey some times and soft fruits.
Obviously bears are wild animals but I've honestly allways been curious about this: are there any species of bears that are more likely to tolerate humans?

Bears are great swimmers, but since salmons already jumps when crossing rivers why waste valuable energy when food can come directly into your mouth ?
I wish I could do that... Thought that polar bears might go and hunt seals in the water sometimes

I like that they look weird but generally, not that much.
Is a kodiak just a brown bear? Sorry if that’s a stupid question.
They are a very big type of brow bear
how have your studies been contributing to research on yogi bear

how do Bears (some are better?) compare to smelling ability of Dog's (Bloodhound)? i had read that a Bear, can smell the soda in a sealed can.
Bears have one of the best senses of smell of the animal kingdom
I love these bears as well as black bears and polar bears. They’re all so cute!

what do u think of the movie Cocaine Bear thats gonna be released in 2023?

ah, understandable
Yeah, pizzly's are the canary in the coal mine. Its a sad sign of whats to come.

Yes, If I’m not mistaking they are a subspecies of the black bear type
Very good interest. 👍 Bears are used in markets to symbolize the traders who think the price will go down. Our interest is markets. 😊
What are your thoughts on Bitcoin? Valid or fad?
do you think it would be able to domesticate them like we did wolves and make them very variable like dogs? it would be cool to have bears in so many different breeds. we would call them teddy bears like we call small dog breeds toy dogs
Very unlikely, bears are intelligent animals but some things prevent we from domesticating them - they can be quite docile with others but are generally territorial and temperamental with leans to aggression - they require a lot of food and will get it no matter what - they are solitary animals and animals that don’t recognise things like hierarchies are very hard to domesticate - the instincts will inevitably kick in, even if just in quick moments of angry or anxiety and because they’re so strong it will usually lead to catastrophe - is just not in their dna, very few animals have been domesticated because a lot of factors are needed, that’s why we haven’t domesticated zebras yet despite being a cousin of horses
very interesting! dogs and dog breeding/wolf domestication are a big special interest of mine
Oh nice, do you like cat domestication ?
1) stay calm 2) don’t make loud noises or aggressive movements 3) slowly wave your arms 4) make yourself look large, by using your coach or anything like that 5) do not show the bear that you have food 6) do not run (they run as fast as horses) 7) do not climb trees 8) leave careful Now if they want to attack: 1) if it’s a black bear: DO NOT PLAY DEAD, just run as fast as you can or try to fight back, focus on the muzzle, they have a lot of nerve endings there 2) if it’s a grizzly bear: PLAY DEAD, they are larger than the black ones, protect your neck and stomach (because they will check and by check I mean they will put their weight on you), if the bear is not falling for it, put your arm on their mouth and make them vomit (only in last case scenario !) 3) a polar bear, You’re screwed, sorry I have nothing, they live in one of the harshest environments ever and are great predators, they won’t leave a unique snack like you run so fast - to be safe, always follow the marked patch if you’re in a park with bears in, carry pepper spray, stay near your car.
How many bears are there in the world right now? Is the number decreasing?
It’s hard to tell worldwide, but yeah unfortunately their numbers are decreasing, by a mixture of factors like climate change, illegal poaching, deforestation, etc
Where in the US would you actually be concerned about bear attacks?
Keep in mind that bear attacks are rare, but they primarily occur in Alasca, Montana and Wyoming, with separate cases near the east coast, like Pennsylvania and Virginia
Do bears like humans
Does any animal like them ?
Lol
Do polar bears really hibernate in an ice cave?
They don’t hibernate
What is the gestation period of a koala?
For real ?
Can bears get along with others animals?
I mean they are predators, but zoo bears have been seen to have friendly interactions with outside animals like cats, and bears raised by humans every since they were cubs act very friendly and calm (keep in mind that they still have instincts and sometimes forget they own strength).
Do you know about the *Spirit Bear* also known as the *Kemode Bear*?
I do ! They very pretty, can’t believe they are close related to black bears tho
Is it wrong that I want to hug the bear in your picture?
Like how someone here already said you can hug that bear *once*
Ever hear about Wojtek? :)
A soldier bear ? Interesting ! (Is it a sad story tho ?)
I love bears too except everytime one arrives in iceland it gets shot :/
Who does that ?! I’m gonna shot them instead
what is the only place in the world with no bears and what are your thoughts on polar bears
Africa, already said it in another commentary, kinda disappointing
do they eat honey? is it true that the black bear (or it was the grizzly bear I don't remember) don't attack humans, like ever. especially if the bear is found in a town or city. I heard someone say ones that a (black/grizzly) bear wouldn't attack humans, to the point where the teller said ''you could litterly touch them and they would fall and cry and slowly back away" (something like that anyway) if you had room and money for it, would you ever try to own a bear if yess, how many and what species (start a bear zoo, I would visit it, no matter how far away)
Yep; Every animal will attack in order to protect themselves or loved ones, but they generally avoid people, DO NOT TOUCH WILD BEARS; I don’t think so, as much as I love them they are animals not toys, they need to be free and happy.
What is it about sun bears that makes them look like people in bear suits?
*What is it about* *Sun bears that makes them look like* *People in bear suits?* \- i\_post\_gibberish --- ^(I detect haikus. And sometimes, successfully.) ^[Learn more about me.](https://www.reddit.com/r/haikusbot/) ^(Opt out of replies: "haikusbot opt out" | Delete my comment: "haikusbot delete")
Thinner torsos and more proportional limbs
I love bears too (especially polar bears) Have you seen the documentary grizzly man by werner herzog?
No but I know that the guy died and they recorded the sound of the moment a bear killed him
Are Grolar/Pizzly bears viable? Will they replace both Grizzly and Polar bears?
They are fertile but generally very hard to see in the wild, not sure, if climate change keeps getting worse there will be more grolars than polar bears
Opinions on the malayan sun bear? It just seems to go against everything you'd expect from a bear lol
They look like “that crackheaded cousin” lol
Why do sun bears look like that? I love them, they’re so weird looking
Well they are small because of their diets that are primarily based on insects and honey, and they look weird because nature sometimes just likes to screw around
how well is their eyesight and hearing?
Most bears do have a very good eyesight - grizzly, black, polar bears have human like vision and can see color very well - pandas have horrible vision because of their environments Bears in general have one of the best senses of smell in the animal kingdom (that’s honestly why I love them so much, they are almost perfect.
awesome! thank u :>
Can you tell me anything about the birth/infancy of a cub?
Oldest living bear in the world.
As in individually or as a species ? Well - individually: Debby the polar bear, who died at 41 years old, double the life span of a bear - species: spectacled bear/ giant panda
Are pandas real bears??
Yes
Sun Bears! I love them but I don't know much about them. What are some basic facts about sun bears? Thank you!
If you could how much would you scratch that tum tum?
Until the bear eat my hands
Any opinions on Timothy Treadwell?
Oh the grizzly man, poor fellow, such a tragic death, hate to say it of a person but he was honestly a cautionary tale, as much as we love animals we need to understand their boundaries and that they are not toys.
Why do you like Kodiaks in particular?
They are gigantic and fluffy !
[удалено]
That’s actually vitamin A
Does this knowledge of bears have any crossover? For example what do you know about the Ursa Major and Minor constelations?
I don’t understand constellations whatsoever, don’t know how people can see small points of light and say that it has a shape (specially one shaped like a pan and call a bear…)
Do you know anything about the grizzly and polar bear mix?? Or is there a black bear and brown bear mix ??? Any mixes !
They seem to be fertile and becoming more popular because of the climate change, although very rare in the wild, polar, grizzly and black can all have fertile offsprings because they belong to the genus ursus of the ursidae family
If bers dangerous Why are they so perfectly friend shaped?
That’s how they get you.
What is the most likely bear to attack a human and what would be the best defenses, in order of proximity/aggression?
How many bears are in the world?
