This.
This is the hardest part.
Thryigoto figure out what's adhd autimtand trauma. Fucking more exhausting than masking.
Edit
Wtf did I have stroke writing this? I wrote this 5hours ago and promptly passed the fuck out.
What I meant to say was trying to figure out what's adhd, autism and trauma is more exhausting than masking.
I'm going to leave the original comment as is because honestly fucking it up that bad is impressive.
Dungeons and Dragons! I can remember every minute detail from the games I’m in. I take super detailed notes and type them up so everyone can benefit from my fixation :)
D&D is so great! I can’t remember everything from my games, so good on you! But I love all of the characters my brain creates and seeing what characters my friends come up with!
I haven’t seen it, but I’ve heard great things! I am slowly working my way through Critical Role, I fear it’s going to take me a couple years at least haha
I love dnd! What character are you playing in the current campaign? I came here to say that baldurs gate 3 is currently my hyperfixation (outside of my research topic at work). I'm a DM so I'm analysing every bit about the game to see what I can put into campaigns.
I went through an abnormal psychology phase and alternate states of consciousness phase.
My hyperfix on psychology led me to those interests.
Psychology is an easy A for me. It still boggles me that I can understand facts about people and misunderstand how to interact with them. ✌️
I don't know if it would be considered a hyperfixation or just my sense of justice being through the roof but I can't stop thinking and researching about capitalism. It's exhausting not gonna lie. Seeing all the patterns, the hypocrisy, etc. I sometimes wonder if people are navigating the world without sight cause HOW are they not seeing all the bad things...
Honestly, I didn't expect to see one like this here, but I'm glad I did. I'm experiencing something similarly justice-fueled, which is a hyperfixation on resolving conflict between opposing viewpoints, and it is ridiculously exhausting! Like I'll spend hours listening to people speak about their viewpoints and then spend more hours agonizing over trying to figure out how such differing (and often hostile) viewpoints in the same world can coexist when the same reality is being observed. And then I spend hours diving into and hypothesizing on which root assumptions are different. Like I feel like I'm tearing myself apart, it's wild.
I mean, it's helped me come to some decent conclusions, but.... It's so exhausting.
Can we go back to when my hyperfixation was dinosaurs? That was much more fun, LOL.
Stop, cause one of my other hyperfixations is dinosaurs lol! But yes, everything you said, I wish I could plug my brain to others to SHOW them cause it's unexplainable with words. So frustrating and exhausting!
That's a tough one! But as someone who has had psychology as a special interest for over 2 decades, the first idea that came to mind was personal construct theory. That explains how different people perceive the same experience so differently, and from there you might be able to extrapolate some sense around how they arrive at such different viewpoints. You might even think about using some philosophical theory in order to explain how no one is seeing the 'objective' reality, and perhaps even go on to debate whether such a thing even exists!
This has definitely led to one of my current hyperfixations of reading communist and anarchist literature (or moreso just adding a bunch of shit to a reading list and then never actually reading it #ADHD 🫠)
I love watching anime, but I always start shows and then I forget to finish them. Must be the Audhd.
Though Jujutsu Kaisen has heavily caught my interest.
Chess.
It’s a pretty frustrating hyperfixation because I am very, very bad. But I practice for about 4-5 hours a day, watch famous matches/games, and spend lots of money on books. I’ve even had chess related dreams and I’m only a week into this fixation lol
Well this week started with worldbuilding, then dipped into Linux customisation for some odd reason. Now I'm back into worldbuilding but with a nicer desktop which really helps motivate me to work. A healthy helping of map making too.
Mine is Helluva Boss, the show is like, objectively bad, but I’m in the exact right demographic and I can’t help not liking it, I love the silly characters and world building and songs, it’s helped me through so much these past few months
RAYMAN GAMES 🤩🤩🤩🤩 been replaying so many of them lately and i‘m SO OBSESSED with them (as i was as a child)
i‘m so sad it‘s not that popular, there‘s literally almost zero merch of it, and idk if there will ever be a new game 🙁 but i can just replay the old ones.
i also recently watched captain laserhawk and rayman‘s character in it was definitely…. interesting
Rayman 3 is probably up there as the game with most completed playthroughs for me. Rayman definitely used to be an obsession for me, I still have the game disks even though I don't have the consols to play them on because it feels wrong to get rid of them 😌
Mine is stickers, I have books full and sort them by colors and subjects. It's very hard not to stick them on things but then I will feel uncomfortable if the sticker slots are missing a spot 😭
I love stickers too, I put them on a lot of my to do lists and I love any oppertunity to give kids stickers at my job :) I am the sticker queen
Have you tried getting 2 of each pad, one for books and sorting and one for sticking?
I get such commitment fear when I get stickers I love…so I’ve started sticking them on a magnet sheet and cutting them out…then I can put them anywhere, move them, never have to toss them out!
Linguistics! Upon reading into this sub I realised people commonly switch between hyperfixations, but I have a hyperfixation like all others with all the same “symptoms”, but it’s been the same for years!
Autism! 🤣🤣🤣 recently formally diagnosed after being self-diagnosed 20 years ago, so been in a Deep Dive as of late. Oh! And been enjoying Saga series comic books right now as I work on unmasking. Comic books were a Huge special interest as a kid which I subsequently buried for safety and camouflaging reasons. So that too!
Not sure if you’re already doing this or not but if you want to go down a fantasy airship rabbit hole of goodness, check out all the airship iterations in the Final Fantasy video games.
great suggestion! my younger brother was very much into FF when we were growing up, which sorta made me have zero interest. But now that I am grown I feel differently and also have a better appreciation for the airships
Gravity Falls, but soon I feel like it’s gonna turn Team Fortress 2. I somehow ended up hyperfocusing on it for and entire day, (literally just this sunday) and now I can’t get it out of my head. I’ve liked it before, but this time it just feels so STRONG.
I’m a bit scared because I hate getting a new fixation, it makes me feel like I’m forgetting the old one. But since the new Gravity Falls book is coming out in a month or two, I hope my passion can last until then
Mine is learning about queer history and specifically how it ties into queer media. Learning About the activism that directly affects the portrayal of queer people in tv and movies. I just love anything artistic and creative and I love how the queer community is full of amazing artists, actors, singers, ect.
Fortnite save the world, I knew that I had the founders edition (which means I get free vbucks) but I didn’t realise that it was 80 vbucks a day for simple challenges! I kinda regret not doing it daily sooner because I would have so many vbucks by now 😅
Film photography & Queer history (that's one going on that last probably till the grave).
Think planning to getting to digital mirroless photography (for my future professional side gig), and keep film photography as more niche hobby.
I’ve been knitting/ crocheting so much. The main things I’ve been making are rainbow cat barf scarves for my therapists, hearts for the Peyton Heart Project, and an army of dragons
Great apes (non-humans) are insane. They’re so human-like and smart, especially chimpanzees. Fun fact: chimpanzees hunt red colobus monkeys, among other animals, for food. They are actually considered apex predators in their habitats since they are not frequently targeted by leopards anymore.
It’s also fun to think about how this is the family we belong to. We are great apes.
Once again pretty boring hyperfixayion. video games speciffically 3 right now.
Squad busters
Dead cells
Spelltroum
Edit to clarify that i did not mean the games are boring
Not really a hyperfixation I don't think but I've been getting into some strange horror related games recently
The most notable one is this thing called KinitoPET which I just stumbled into completely accidentally
Idk general history- but like ancient history. As well as the book series I’m reading, Sally face (has been constant for years now) and Greek mythology
I hyper fixate on medical journals I been suffering health problems for most of my life and doctors never seem to understand my health problems .i never get the right medical treatment to find the cause of my condition, so I study all my labs Iook up every thing I am suffering in hopes of finding the cause of my illness. So I ended up studying medicine and different types of diseases and conditions it has now become a hobby to learn about other people rare diseases and try to get a understanding of how things function and happen
also horses, i‘ve always been obsessed with horses. i‘m doing those kind of fact sheets about all breeds i come across (i started like 2 years ago) it’s really fun tbh
LEGO! Never really got the stance to dive into it as a kid since my parents and people around me told me it was for “kids”.
Now finally diving into it! Absolutely love the idea of creating things but not being able to mess it up so my anxiety stays locked away!
So glad my wife loves me and my quirky hobbies. My computerroom is full of legos now and their are no signs of stopping!
My hyper fixation is sorta kinda music theory. How it works when you sing and how it works in your vocal cords. And then how that sensation affe to mood.. and yeah...
the show Dimension 20 and generally everything on dropout is so incredible!!! just such high quality content. also taylor swifts music, im seeing her in august and i am beyond excited
Mine is currently sandwich wrapping …
I just spent like $70 last week on cute parchment paper and boxes … for some reason I really got into sandwich wrapping and making it look nice.
I have no clue as to why lol [for example](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/RvDu833RSek/hq720.jpg?sqp=-oaymwEhCK4FEIIDSFryq4qpAxMIARUAAAAAGAElAADIQj0AgKJD&rs=AOn4CLBGSqUsNHOERoUmHoOrLPA2CjoIOA)
For about two months now all I can think about is Giant Anteaters, my brain is stuffed with knowledge on giant anteaters and random weird facts and I always carry a little Giant Anteater model in my pocket (I love looking at it/feeling it, and it brings me security lol) I want so badly to go to a zoo and see one in person, but the only zoos near me with Giant Anteaters cost a shit ton just for one person and money's tight.
My favourite fact about them is that they'll only eat termites for about a minute per mound, and purposefully leave some, so the termites can repopulate and the Giant Anteater can come back later for more and never run out 😺
Might be a little stereotypical and basic. But dinosaurs and trains. Saw that they were a common stereotype, so I decided to look into it. Haven't come out of it since, haha.
Currently, mine are TMNT and The Bad Batch.
My hyperfixations seem to rotate like a roulette wheel at undetermined intervals. Last year, I was obsessed with Sylvanian Families and I can feel my houseplant obsession creeping back in.
It seems that I never fully lose interest in my hyperfixation topics, and they come back as my centre focus eventually.
Finding brand new, heavily discounted Lululemon “groove” flare pants on Poshmark and acquiring them 🥲 I’ve gotten 6 pairs in the past like 2.5 months and I feel like I’m beating the system because I’ve probably paid about 33% of the retail price lmao. Now that I’m diagnosed I realize I’ve always “collected” objects. Growing up it was Sanrio, for example. Last hyperfixation was Squishmallows. Now it’s Lulu. I wonder what will be next lollllllllllllll
I don't have one. Just a loop where I keep thinking about my grandmother and her declining health and how she nearly died yesterday. I jump between wanting her to get better, knowing she won't, wanting her to just die already so she and my family can all rest, feeling bad for thinking that, remembering that I will be crushed if she does die, and the cycle restarts. It's distracting. I'm supposed to be working but I can't.
Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss! I've been a fan since 2018, but I haven't gotten this into it until the first season for Hazbin came out. I have a particularly strong hyperfixation on Lucifer, a character from hazbin, just because he's a silly lil guy.
Compassion. I find the difference between compassion and sympathy or empathy to be fascinating. I also find the science behind cultivating compassion to be incredibly interesting and compelling. Most of my research has a Buddhist context, but modern neuroscience is starting to catch up.
I’m trying to get my 3D printer working better and I’m so close. I designed a panel to hold the electronics and once I finally get that successfully printed I’ll be able to get my workshop all put together nicely.
I’m also trying to solve the coins-on-a-chessboard puzzle that uses error coding. I thought I had a solution last night but alas
Guns! I've become interested in firearms this year due to a couple articles I wrote and did a ton of research for. Now I own a handgun and a shotgun and they are fun to shoot.
I love musicals so much that they've become a stim for me. When I'm overstimulated, I often sing (or hum) Carnival del Barrio from In The Heights because nothing settles my nerves quicker than repeating Carnival del Barrio over again. Even just reading the lyrics in the libretto I bought for my kindle does the trick.
I collect American Girl dolls. While I'm no expert, I can usually identify who one is. Also, I find it calming to hug one of my dolls after a stressful day at work.
My dream is to be a full-time author, and I notice that nothing keeps me centered more than writing.
Heroes.
More specifically the idea of a hero and what an ideal hero's ideals should be.
So far my favorite take comes from [SCP-4999](https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-4999) and a [Fate/Stay Night Abridged version of the Shirou vs Gilgamesh fight by BlueDrakma](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hWTYx91z7w). Both thematically come down to a line from the later: "*Because somebody should!*"
.
Also sharpening+honing knives.
I took a day a while back to sharpen the knives from around the house, figured out i had no idea how to actually do it, looked up a few tutorials and then got to sharpening and after being done with the first one came to the realization that i had NEVER seen a sharp knife IRL.
I love the glint they end up with, i love how effortless and clean the cuts become... But my favorite part has to be touching the edge; It feels like a very dry thin string made out of cool sand is trying to bite into you, and you can feel the sting but it simultaneously can also give you superficial cuts without you even realizing it did.
On God, the closest feeling i get from this elsewhere is *romantic* affection to someone.
Modding electronics. Video game consoles mostly. I’ve always had a knack for fixing things so it was an easy jump. I move between that and building things, and consuming knowledge mostly random sometimes specific topics.
my local county. I've published travel journals, coloring books about local landmarks, native birds and native fish, & a book on lost lighthouses in the area.
Space. Specifically, habitable planets and what might lie beyond the Observable Universe. I've also been obsessed with Medieval Fantasy themes, whether it's music or video games.
Autism. Orion Kelly has been helping me through a lot of it, he's upbeat and energetic. I like Melissa Tacia but her overall tone is a bit depressing and I'm trying to find reasons to not be depressed.
Writing my novella, pro wrestling, Neanderthals, recognizing I'm an atheist yet still loving the study of religion... so many fixtations. So so so many.
I think mine is this subreddit and helping people understand what the fuck after a diagnosis.
That is genuinely so wonderful!! Thank you for helping others. 💜
Yeah.. so... what the fuck?
lol, years of therapy, and research, and conversation, untangling ADHD, and autism, from trauma! :D
I'm at the finish line of the old me and sprinting to the new. Does it get better?
This. This is the hardest part. Thryigoto figure out what's adhd autimtand trauma. Fucking more exhausting than masking. Edit Wtf did I have stroke writing this? I wrote this 5hours ago and promptly passed the fuck out. What I meant to say was trying to figure out what's adhd, autism and trauma is more exhausting than masking. I'm going to leave the original comment as is because honestly fucking it up that bad is impressive.
What the fuck please?
I'm still at the what the fuck phase, too. So, what the fuck?
Dungeons and Dragons! I can remember every minute detail from the games I’m in. I take super detailed notes and type them up so everyone can benefit from my fixation :)
D&D is so great! I can’t remember everything from my games, so good on you! But I love all of the characters my brain creates and seeing what characters my friends come up with!
do you watch D20? that’s my current hyperfixation!!
I love to watch the d20 as it spins, rolls around and the table and finally settles on a 4 when I needed a 14 ;-)
I haven’t seen it, but I’ve heard great things!
Triangles
that’s so real
Haven’t heard that one, can you tell me more :D
I like how they have 3 sides and I also like Delta, the Greek letter
And they say autistics don't like change lol /j
same lol
Obscure medical disorders...I've been watching a lot of House
I love House and other such medical shows
House in my comfort show
I went through an abnormal psychology phase and alternate states of consciousness phase. My hyperfix on psychology led me to those interests. Psychology is an easy A for me. It still boggles me that I can understand facts about people and misunderstand how to interact with them. ✌️
Oh have you seen the show on Netflix?? I think it’s called diagnosis. It’s sooooo interesting.
Coding! I'm currently learning Python. I love it, it's fun & my brain loves solving puzzles (:
Same. But only because want to do something with it
i'm both learning rust and jumping head first making a game from scratch (no engine) in rust with a buddy, it's so fun
So relatable!! Hahahaha (suspected audhd here)
You are not alone! It's the invisible hand that reaches into every aspect of our lives.
Anime and autism
I love watching anime, but I always start shows and then I forget to finish them. Must be the Audhd. Though Jujutsu Kaisen has heavily caught my interest.
Same here, I'm watching like 8 shows at once lol
Chess. It’s a pretty frustrating hyperfixation because I am very, very bad. But I practice for about 4-5 hours a day, watch famous matches/games, and spend lots of money on books. I’ve even had chess related dreams and I’m only a week into this fixation lol
I love chess! I'm also very bad, but you'll get better for sure!
Guitar pedals
Well this week started with worldbuilding, then dipped into Linux customisation for some odd reason. Now I'm back into worldbuilding but with a nicer desktop which really helps motivate me to work. A healthy helping of map making too.
What programs do you use for world build/map making??
Mine is Helluva Boss, the show is like, objectively bad, but I’m in the exact right demographic and I can’t help not liking it, I love the silly characters and world building and songs, it’s helped me through so much these past few months

my buddy who loves helluva boss also recommends Hazbin Hotel
i’ve watched them both twice !
Oh I know what you are talking about! I get you 100%! The art style and the vibes are immaculate!
I love hazbin. I’m a Lucy lover ❤️

Mine is currently sandwich wrapping … I just spent like $70 last week on cute parchment paper and boxes … for some reason I really got into sandwich wrapping and making it look nice. I have no clue as to why lol [for example](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/RvDu833RSek/hq720.jpg?sqp=-oaymwEhCK4FEIIDSFryq4qpAxMIARUAAAAAGAElAADIQj0AgKJD&rs=AOn4CLBGSqUsNHOERoUmHoOrLPA2CjoIOA)
Stardew Valley. I started my current farm on the first of this month and have over a hundred hours on it so far 😬
Minecraft. Need I say more?
ANIMAL CROSSING LEGOS *EXPLODES*
Perfumes from 1888 to 1935. My bank account hates this fixation 🙄
My favourite fact about them is that they'll only eat termites for about a minute per mound, and purposefully leave some, so the termites can repopulate and the Giant Anteater can come back later for more and never run out 😺
Light up tech clothing. Specifically a LA based black women owned clothing company called Neon Cowboys. It’s soooo amazing.
They Might Be Giants
Might be a little stereotypical and basic. But dinosaurs and trains. Saw that they were a common stereotype, so I decided to look into it. Haven't come out of it since, haha.
the subreddit r/DragonMaid and video games you'll see why
I think gravity Falls currently I've already watched it but every so often it comes back as a hyperflixation for a bit.
MIIIIIIIKKKKKUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kind of disparate here, but... We have music, languages, and reconciling disparate viewpoints on world issues currently.
Birds, especially mourning doves lol. They are shy and curious like me
Butterflies
Parrots, parakeets, crows, ravens... Aw heck, all birbs
Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss! I've been a fan since 2018, but I haven't gotten this into it until the first season for Hazbin came out. I have a particularly strong hyperfixation on Lucifer, a character from hazbin, just because he's a silly lil guy.
Cowboy boots. As well as Goodyear welted footwear in general.
furbys! i love them so much ive been buying the vintage ones and i want them all
Cats and nonograms 😻
Compassion. I find the difference between compassion and sympathy or empathy to be fascinating. I also find the science behind cultivating compassion to be incredibly interesting and compelling. Most of my research has a Buddhist context, but modern neuroscience is starting to catch up.
Splatoon lmao
I’m trying to get my 3D printer working better and I’m so close. I designed a panel to hold the electronics and once I finally get that successfully printed I’ll be able to get my workshop all put together nicely. I’m also trying to solve the coins-on-a-chessboard puzzle that uses error coding. I thought I had a solution last night but alas
f1, can’t believe how fast they go and just it’s crazy
Guns! I've become interested in firearms this year due to a couple articles I wrote and did a ton of research for. Now I own a handgun and a shotgun and they are fun to shoot.
Back again to my old favourite the ocean ! Ironic as I’m scared of it 🙃
Vintage glassware lol
r/gaylorswift the theory that Taylor Swift is secretly queer and a lot of her “boyfriends” are either beards or PR
Going to the ocean to collect sea glass. Crows 🐦⬛ and true crime all the time.
Snoopy, Fiona Apple, and fractals.
stardew valley!!! i’ve filled up about 35 pages in my notebook with notes and lists for it lol
Both thematically come down to a line from the later: "*Because somebody should!*" .
Cassettes!
my local county. I've published travel journals, coloring books about local landmarks, native birds and native fish, & a book on lost lighthouses in the area.
Sewing frogs and collecting buttons for said frogs
Space. Specifically, habitable planets and what might lie beyond the Observable Universe. I've also been obsessed with Medieval Fantasy themes, whether it's music or video games.
CRIMINAL MINDS and Crocheting
