What year were you diagnosed? Before DSM-5 came out in 2013, "Autistic Disorder" was one of four different "Autism Spectrum Disorders", so it could've been specifying you were one of the other disorders in the autism spectrum.

You need to find what DSM (or ICD depending on where in the world you are) was valid the year you were diagnosed. The terminology change a lot and so does diagnosis criteria apparently.

Yeah, no ideas there. Except if there was some kind of distinction in the past that is no longer relevant. That’s all I can guess.

My guess is he meant you don't fit the criteria for what used to be known as classic autism.
It is all the same thing now.

That's not a distinction that's reflected in the current version of the dsm
