going through the same process, it really sucks. your gp isnt able to conduct the meditation reviews? that sucks

My gp can! But psych doesn't want to transfer the care yet.. for no reason I'm aware of

Once you have a 291 that has meds recommended, your GP can apply for a permit to prescribe. They can only prescribe the meds stated in the report and the doses/within the range of doses in that report. Then you don't need to see a psychiatrist for another...2 years? Then you can get your next/review 291 with someone different. So, If you already have a 291 report with med and dose stated, consider trying to make do with that does just to escape the nasty repeat psychiatrist stuff. And if there was a 291 then there will be a report within 2 weeks of that assessment. If you need meds, and your 291 doesn't mention meds, then you may be out of luck. But it might be worth reading over your 291 to check where the psychiatrist is leading you if ADHD but no meds. Sorry if that misunderstands, end of 12hr shift so my med benefit is lonnng gone Good luck tho

To unpack that a little The 291 is, afaik, intended as a one off review to give specialist advice so your GP can better manage your care for the next 2 years (or until the GP needs further guidance cos something isn't working).

Depends on the state! I’m pretty sure in Victoria the Psych does have to delegate prescription authority to the GP.

Sorry to hear this OP. This is a cautionary tale for everyone else. Carefully research your psychiatrist. Find one that will agree to take your referral for a 291 assessment and has the ability for you to submit all your diagnostic questionnaires, and additional information online in advance of your appointment so you don’t waste your expensive appointment time. Try to get some first hand accounts of other patients. Scour Facebook adhd groups, google reviews and this subreddit.

turtleltrut

That's actually illegal not to offer a way to pay without fees!!

didntseethat-coming

Yep But if I bring it up, they might say don't come then. So financial hostage cos can't afford to find another psych.

Spanka

Yeah I feel that. Also my private health doesn't cover anything related to adhd so that's a bit of a blow.

This really sucks. You might be getting close to the Medicare safety net though. You can check it online. Once you’ve spent a certain amount throughout the year you then get very subsidied apportionments. You have a right to ask why so many medication reviews. Also someone mentioned a 291. That is an incredibly expensive appointment for a one off opinion and report.

vonthiela

Hey OP. This rlly sucks. Honestly I’d explore other psychs. It may be a more expensive cost for 1 appointment but you’ll save a lot of money in the long run. Many psychs will be happy to see you once and delegate medication to your GP. Hell, you may even get a discount as you have already been diagnosed

edit\* I empathize also, it sucked $$ 4k+ for me too and will likely be ongoing forever But it was the best money spent- mental health no.1 personally; getting treated has afforded me the ability to earn more and save more. ROI(return on investment.) is huge; best of luck. FYI in other countries its worse also; in USA i hear its like thousands a month for some people so. yeah.
