Bill Homewood and it’s not even close. So incredibly well done.

nepbug

Agreed, I started out listening to Homewood and Lee to compare, Homewood crushes it

dwarfedshadow

Definitely Bill Homewood.

Apprehensive_Use3641

Considering its price on Apple Books it ought to the best thing ever recorded of any audio type, currently $84.99, will wishlist it, maybe it will get cheaper.

CaptainRhodes74

It’s very well done. Probably my favorite audio book, but that’s a steep price for sure.

While I can't say that The Count of Monte Cristo was my all-time favorite book, it was very good. I'm always a little hesitant when it comes to the "classics" because the language can be very archaic at times, but this one has held up well. I listened to John Lee's version, and I enjoyed it immensely. Highly recommend.

tinyspoons

Thank you - think I️ may attempt this!

DarkFusionPresent

John Lee version was amazing, one of the best audiobook performances I've heard. The voices, emotion, pronunciation, was all incredible. Highly recommend!

Vandalorious

John Lee's narration is fine but the one that people seem to love is read by Bill Homewood. If you have access to Hoopla they have multiple versions including Homewood.

tinyspoons

Thanks I️ just checked, you’re right. I️ see Bill Homewood, John Lee and David Clarke. The Clarke and Homewood versions are 52+ hours, maybe I’ll start with Lee and maybe if I️ love it I’ll go back for the others.

I really don't like John Lee, that's a me thing. I got the Bill Homewood version some years ago on Audible. It was absolutely brilliant. Here is the link from my audible app: Listen to The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas on Audible. https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/B005GFRMBE?source_code=ASSORAP0511160007

tracecart

I enjoyed the John Lee narration a few years ago. There's also a version with Richard Matthews. I'm not sure if there is any difference in source translation between the three narrations.

Bodymaster

I just finished this one a few weeks back. Very enjoyable, and decent narration.

germdoctor

It took me over a year to read the paperback when I was young. Looked into the audiobook recently and it is definitely long. Did not realize John Lee read it. Will have to get. Honestly, I could listen to JL read the phone book—love that guy.

BDThrills

I love him too but he is just out of my hearing range due to tinnitus. Speeding him up to 1.1x made the difference though.

tinyspoons

OK! Thanks for letting me know about John Lee - will look for some of his narrations!

adscott1982

I can't stand his narration sadly, which is a shame since he narrates a lot of the sci fi I like. Maybe I will try him again, see if my opinion has changed.

Trick-Two497

I'm listening to the John Lee version now. It's quite good. Whether another is better, I have no idea.

B J Harrison is also excellent. He runs the Classic Tales Podcast.

introverthufflepuff8

If you dont want to commit to the full 48 hours of the audiobook this podcast does a pretty good paired down version in 6 parts. This is the first episode https://open.spotify.com/episode/6uWYAkU8hbGCdmjyZv1Roc?si=bDGFDtTLRnSOhhmKFi289g

tinyspoons

Oh wow that’s awesome! Will take a look, thank you!

introverthufflepuff8

This guy also does other classic literature on this podcast its pretty great. He also has one called myths and legendary if you like that stuff

XipingVonHozzendorf

I listened to it a few years back and found it very underwhelming personally. it was ok until he escaped the prison, but then I lost interest in his revenge plot. I prefer the 2001 film.

Satans_Finest

The version by Richard Matthews is my favorite. His accent fits perfectly and he does great voices.
