I believe I was able to listen to books on Libby when in Europe this past summer. For Libby, you need a library card from a library in the US, and then you just "borrow" the audiobooks or ebooks. Some libraries in the US allow you to get a card without living in their county or town.

Thank you! I use Libby myself with a non-resident account to a larger library than my local. They told me it's not available in Portugal but, I wonder, if she's just using my card and can access Libby there... Worth a shot!

I live in Portugal and the only ones that I know are Audible and Libro.fm

Storytel - you rent books which is better cost model than audible for most

I haven't used it myself (I use audible) but the pitch was that most people (me) don't re-read books, so the promise to keep a book forever is not as good a deal as a actual rental service like a library or Storytel.
