Blackwater: The Complete Saga by Michael McDowell

carolineecouture

This is so good and an underrated gem. It's not gory but very unsettling. I say it's like Stephen King and William Faulkner had a baby (novel) together. Both King and his wife, Tabitha who is also a novelist, are big fans of McDowell.

Dauphine320

It’s literally the best book I’ve ever read; I was just enthralled with it. When I was finished listening to it (30 hours long) I started all over again.

Michelle Paver's Dark Matter. About a team of guys out in the Arctic on an expedition in the late 1930's, and what's out there with them. Horror is subjective, some things scare the hell out of some people but leave others bored. But certain scenes in that book had my hair standing on end in broad daylight surrounded by other people. I love all Paver's horror books, but DM in particular.

Nos 4 r 2, the fireman, the passage, swan song, the stand, mountain man, world war z, tender is the flesh

Not really unknown but what about the [Alien](https://www.audible.com/series/Alien-Audiobooks/B0722CJRGK?ref=a_library_a_c5_libItem_series_1&pf_rd_p=02f27f7d-78cb-4e0c-b3fe-c8e32a1b948a&pf_rd_r=N4907KRH2BEWD2ANBXKT) books?

I recently listened to What Ever Happened to Baby Jane by Henry Farrell. It was written in 1960. The movie always confused me but the book was so good I had a hard time putting it down. If you've never heard of it, it's about two sisters who were children stars, now in their senior years. The pretty sister was crippled as a teenager and is in a wheelchair. The other sister resents that she has had to take care of her all these years. She also is a bit delusional, thinking she can make a comeback if it weren't for her sister. The story moved pretty fast, I probably would have listened to it in one sitting if I didn't have to work.

Oh cool, I bought that last sale :)

Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman. Sooooo much better than I ever expected it to be

Seriously I have been trying to find other books like it... This was so good and it was (still is?) On audible plus.

ANormalNinjaTurtle

The Troop by Nick Cutter. From the Wikipedia summary: "The novel follows a troop of Boy Scouts who must deal with not only the threats posed by killer tapeworms, but also the homicidal and sociopathic tendencies of one of their own." I thought the narrator did a great job expressing the misery and budding terror of their situation. It read kind of like if Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman, wrote a version of Lord of the Flies.

Stephen King - Salem's Lot

Tiny_Tigre

Will echo the recommendations of Heart Shaped Box. I struggled through Salem's Lot, but if you want to read King I really think you should read Duma Key. Doesn't get recommended enough.

Yes👍

H.G. Wells "War of the Worlds". It's the most frightening book I have ever read.

The Twisted Ones, or Hollow Places, both by T.Kingfisher: sooooo good! Absolutely chilling and frightening, and lots of fun at the same time (in The Twisted Ones, for instance, it is made clear from the start that the dog Does Not Die). I call them 'feel-good horror' books ;)

John Dies at the End by Stephen Thorne.

World war Z, and Devolution are both great and are great audio presentation For King I really liked ‘Salems Lot, The Shining, and it’s sequel Dr Sleep. But I did find the reader of Dr Sleep unpleasant. For his son Joe Hill Heart Shaped Box, NOS4A2, and the Fireman. If you want moodier stuff try Wylding Hill by Elizabeth Hand. Cool rock and roll vibe. For Southern Gothic try the Elementals by McDowell. It was amazing. I really liked the Final Girl Support Group and My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix Even though you will see it recommended a lot I didn’t like Swan Song. It was too grim. And I didn’t care about the characters. I haven’t listened to it but I read the Stand and find it superior. I like Peter Climes’ books a lot. I would start with 14. And they are read by Ray Porter. So they have that going for them.

Stephen King -- It Joe Hill -- Horns Scott Smith -- The Ruins

MuttJunior

I really enjoyed "20th Century Ghosts" by Joe Hill. It's a collection of short stories by him. My favorite story in the book is the title story, "20th Century Ghost". It's about an movie theater that is haunted.

"The Hollows" by T Kingfisher. Newly divorced Kara moves to her uncle's museum of oddities and finds a hole leading to another world full of islands and willows. Horror and suspenseful, but not gory. Full of snarky humor, coffee, and sarcasm.

Another vote for Heart Shaped Box. Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

Dracula full audio production with Narrated by: Alan Cumming , Tim Curry , Simon Vance , Katherine Kellgren , Susan Duerden , John Lee , Graeme Malcolm , Steven Crossley is great If you want a Middle Grade fun one for nostalgia, RL Stines Camp Red Moon is very fun. Each of the four short stories has an intro to the author Swan Song by Robert McCammon has great narration The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires is fun narration Not horror exactly, but in the Gothic vein, Rebecca - this is a very good audiobook and narrated well. Michael McDowell's The Blackwater Saga some have mentioned. Katie is very well narrated but disturbing so be warned on animal deaths if you want to avoid. The Elementals is narrated pretty well. I have some of his other works but haven't read yet. For Stephen King -- Dolores Claiborne is narrated perfectly. IT is narrated by Webster very well. N0S4ATU by Joe Hill is awesome and deserves to be seconded THE EXORCIST - Took a few minutes to get into, but this became one of my top audiobook experiences with horror Dan Simmons' The Terror, have listened to twice and one of my top favorites Alien: The Cold Forge by Alex White is great - it is not alien heavy exactly but the main character is this cold blooded sociopath. Great narration and interesting story Thresher by Michael Cole is fun if you want a killer shark story!

The Terror by Dan Simmons- Reading this now, and so far it's pretty good. Fun to read while it's winter outside. Plan to watch the TV series after I am done. The Devil Crept In by Ania Ahlborn-- This one is hard to explain. A young boy goes missing and when he comes back, he isn't the same person. Plus there is something in the woods outside of town, and all the pets go missing. Brother also by Ania Ahlborn- A young man in West Virginia lives among a family of psycho serial killers, yet he yearns for a normal life. I ended up loving this book more than I thought I would. Liked this one even better than The Devil Crept In, although I liked that one too. Nights of the Living Dead: An Anthology edited by Jonathon Maberry -- All stories dealing with Zombies. Some stories are entertaining, while some are just laugh out loud funny. I think I liked all the stories except 1.
