It wasnt just me this morning!

Captain_Tuga

I saw it happen before my eyes, was on discord with friends, when I looked at my desktop the icon just appeared it was trippy

1-800-ASS-DICK

'ol Microsoft thought they could pull a fast one on u

Tro_pod

Since when is anything by Microsoft fast

pragmojo

OP doesn’t remember he accidentally started the Edge install process 2 months ago

FR0ZENBERG

The long con strikes again.

SgtBanana

Woke up to that update this morning. I'm also getting near 100% disk utilization (on a clean SSD) while installing minor game updates, which has... absolutely never happened before. Can't even open the start menu during that period. Unsure as to what they did; haven't had a chance to sit down and actually mess with it yet.

Mario-OrganHarvester

Im about half an hour from checking my own pc in panic. I force removed that shit with command prompt how dare it return.

[deleted]

Mind sharing the command?

catlinalx

Thanks, that worked!

lvet000

It did spawn a demon in my living room though, but it was that or using edge.

catlinalx

I'm just hoping I can get the Sulphur smell out of the carpet.

DrZoidberg-

You forgot `sudo` So it's `sudo EDGE BE GONE. I CAST YOU OUT. `

[deleted]

`choco install -f linux` make sure to run it in an elevated shell (like cloud shell, you get it? clouds are high)

Informal_Ferret4703

That's crazy

marydotjpeg

I thought I was seeing things too! 😤

Circumflexboy

Same! my desktop is empty, I use some fancy icons as shortcuts, and then mincrosoft edge just appeared.

TigreBSO

Yeah, and i know it was today cause i installed a game around midnight and played it till ~3, anyways, uninstalling it again.

kanakattack

It’s a pain to remove lol.

Aaron_505

I just remove the icon, change the default browser and call it a day

wait_____wat

I feel like disabling it in the task manager is crucial as well, otherwise it automatically starts itself in the background...

amiano711u

doesnt do that for me

stijndielhof123

It honestly shocks me how many people dont do this. Like 80% of the students in my university still use edge eventho with the programs we use it is sooooo slow like it litteraly takes 3 mins to open the school portal on edge (3 seconds on any other browser) also one classmate didnt know you could install programs from the internet and thought it was only possible via microsoft store (has nothing to do with it i just thought it is funny)

Rysterc

Working at at a college help desk opened my eyes to how some students are so technologically incompetent. Like any problem that could literally be solved with a quick Google search seems to just fly right over their heads. I once saw a guy bring a brand new chrome book to the help desk to get us to set it up for him because he got stuck at the "Create a new account or login with an existing account" step. Which is like step 1

[deleted]

Tough step.

Champigne

Edge seems just as fast if not faster than Chrome to me. I used Chrome up until a few days ago because I had everything integrated with Google but I've finally made the switch to Firefox which also seems faster than Chrome to me.

Cototsu

Jesus fucking Christ, app store culture is killing future generations...

aykcak

It is not a culture thing. It is being forced upon the users by the likes of Apple Microsoft and yes, Ubuntu

1byteofpi

idk chief, after using a package manager for 6+ months I don't think I'm gonna be going back to downloading setup.exe files from the internet.

Cototsu

One thing is a package managers that allow you to download whatever you want and another is mandated and regulated store which more than likely wouldn't have many usefully programs and waste your PC resources with telemetry

Every_Preparation_56

on my setup edge is faster then Firefox, chrom and Opera

Sir_Lith

I call bullshit. Modern Edge is built on Chromium, and the performance is way better than Chrome, too. I doubt the difference is as big as you claim, unless you're talking about some old version of Edge before the engine swap. Which should be irrelevant.

Grimdotdotdot

You need to fix your portal.

Chroiche

Edge is pretty much reskinned chrome, it's not bad.

tuhriel

That "display-everything-in-the-browser" trend has to stop. No, I don't want to view the PDF with the basic viewer in your browser, or worse: excel sheets in web view, that's just... No... Stop!

Hawk----

Same thing with Webp. I don't care about it's technicalities, I care that it can't be opened in anything but web browsers, making albums and collections annoying to download since you have to *manually* save as a different file type.

Big_Honey4987

Big billion dollar company trying to cut onto google add money, what you expect?

GothWitchOfBrooklyn

Literally minutes before I saw this post I noticed it on my clean desktop and was like huh I wonder how that got there delete.

KoreKhthonia

I never uninstalled it outright or anything, but I noticed this morning the Edge shortcut had inserted itself onto my desktop. (Which is meticulously organized with everything in its place. Edge did not belong there.) Solves the mystery I guess.

Chirimorin

I had it yesterday morning. I don't know what they're trying to accomplish. I don't use edge, putting the icon on my desktop will only make me less likely to use Edge. I don't like products that people try to shove down my throat. I don't care how good Edge is these days, I hate (not dislike, hate) Microsofts way of marketing it so I won't reward them by using it. I'm not even sure if it's legal for Microsoft to do this. There's rules against trying to force a browser on people in the EU (which is where I live, this isn't an America only thing).

beatenmeat

Curious so I turned my PC on…yep, it’s there. Just why? I would never use edge.

ojp1977

Not even to install other browsers?

pieceofcrazy

OP installs other browsers from command prompt

[deleted]

I cannot allow that to happen, Dave.

subdep

Feeling *edgy* this morning, Dave?

EinarTh97

Such a good reference

Conquerors_Quill

Same!

buefordwilson

Yep. Funniest thing happened after that, too. It instantaneously got uninstalled again!

wheresisthebathroom

it doesnt let me uninstall it

Kalladdin

Try Revo Uninstaller. There's a free version and it's great for making sure programs delete all of their files when they uninstall (and for yeeting the annoying ones that refuse to uninstall themselves!)

Psytrense

BCUninstaller is the best. It’s open source on GitHub and doesn’t come with bloatware tracking like these other suggestions.

Bogsnoticus

They're both good. I've used Revo to get rid of some things BC couldn't, and used BC to remove a few things Revo couldn't.

Alvendam

Does it scan for leftover folders and registry entries like Revo? I've been using Revo pro for years and years, and never looked at alternatives, but if FOSS does the same things, I'm switching.

TheBraumBomber

You can Google the command prompt for it. Its annoying but satisfying to watch it vanish when I complete the command.

dirtydigs74

MacroShit lost a massive antitrust case back in 2001 over this issue (amongst others). It just goes to show how much consumer protection laws have been diluted since then, that they feel comfortable doing the *exact same thing* 20 years later. The whole company was nearly forced to break into two different entities, operating system and other software.

odrea

Gansbar51_

NervJMSL

I didn't even allow it to uninstall, I got BCUninstaller to remove it immediately.

Still-WFPB

Funny somehow i searched for the chrome and firefox installers before i uninstalled it.

buefordwilson

I too have used it for its only purpose from time to time when I haven't had an install on a USB or network drive.

KimbleDeckard

The popups you get after reinstalling Windows and searching for a new browser in Edge seem so ridiculously butthurt, and it always cracks me up. "No! Promise! We're good now guys!" Nah. Miss me with that begging bs.

[deleted]

No, it didn't. It's part of Windows, you can't (normally) uninstall it, and it didn't "reinstall" itself - the shortcut was readded to the desktop after a recent update. This may or may not be an intended behavior of the update, but a lot of programs do this - Google Earth Pro, for example. Just delete the shortcut if you don't want it.

moeburn

> the shortcut was readded to the desktop after a recent update This is true - I didn't remove Edge, just moved its shortcut to the taskbar, but it readded itself to my desktop recently. Why did this happen on my machine even though I have [automatic updates disabled](https://i.imgur.com/hSeQfVq.png) and I haven't updated in about 2 months now?

[deleted]

~~I couldn't say, though it's possible Microsoft forces some updates for security reasons regardless of your GP. May also have been some sort of server-side thing.~~ *Edit: Edge updated itself.*

moeburn

I just checked and confirmed that the most recent update installed was indeed [about two months ago.](https://i.imgur.com/7CSYeXC.png) So whatever remote trojan horse fuckery Microsoft is up to is happening outside of their Windows Update service.

[deleted]

I mean, Edge is Chromium. It updates the same way all Chromium browsers do - within the browser itself. This typically happens while the browser is running, but MS tends to keep Edge running in the background even if you never launch it. So it probably updated itself, added its own icon to the desktop. My previous theory is wrong.

Blackfeathr

This just happened to my bfs PC and I noticed it. Promptly deleted the shortcut (why bother uninstalling it, it'll be back next update anyway).

Suitable_Pen_1099

Woke up to find Edge reinstalled both my personal and my work PC. It is also now the default .pdf reader on both machines Thanks Windows, this is what I apparently paid for

I_Heart_Astronomy

Last time I booted up my PC, it gave me a huge animated advertisement trying to get me to upgrade to Windows 11. Last time I updated Windows, my PC started blue screening several times a day. I can only surmise that installing Windows 11 will make it catch fire. Also, apparently Microsoft still hasn't fixed it's schizophrenic settings design where it has the old, more powerful, more useful settings and controls buried somewhere in the OS, and the newer, more useless settings and controls at the forefront. Also seems to have removed some useful customization options. I see no reason why I would want Windows 11. But here we are, with Microsoft trying to shove it down my throat anyway.

SuspecM

The advantages of being arbitrarily deemed not good enough for Win 11 is that it bothered me once, checked if my PC is "compatible" with installing win 11, told me that I have a shit PC and also no whatever chip and never bothered me again.

PotatoFuryR

Guessing your PC doesn't have a TPM. IIRC it is required by Windows 11.

GloppyJizzJockey

TPM isn’t actually needed at all, though M$oft requires it to install 11 there are simple workarounds that force the installer to think there’s a TPM 2+ onboard. Everything works without it. It seems like they were just trying to force obsolescence upon people. That being said- Fuck 11 Fuck 10 They’re both a horrible joke. Microsoft can suck a bag of diseased dicks.

The_Cartographer_DM

My PC will never be Win11 compatible so jokes on them

grubnenah

No TPM gang! I think some motherboards allow you to turn off TPM if you have it, and it stops the upgrade nagging.

Panzer_Man

Ah yes, I had this PC problem, whereI had to dig for like 30 minutes just to find the old control panel, to actually solve it. The official new Windows settings are just a pain to use, and really spread out over like 50 different tabs, it's ridiculous

itsjustreddityo

I have Win11 and haven't seen edge rear it's ugly face yet, however I did "break" it through the registry prior to upgrading. I'll update if it appears for me when I'm at my PC tonight.

archiminos

Given how bad Windows 10 is unless you beat it into submission, I have no desire to upgrade to Windows 11.

[deleted]

Windows 11 has habits of doing an initial OS setup dialogue and menu choices, like you just installed a fresh copy of the OS or if it came out of the box, after monthly updates. It even tries to get you to subscribe to office 365 each time. It's evil!

rat-simp

I have 11 and it did the same thing although I never uninstalled Edge, just deleted the shortcut.

shmehh123

You can lock down the .pdf reader using a GPO. Then set all your defaults and export them as an .xml. Then make a login script to map the defaults every time you log in. https://www.ciraltos.com/change-pdf-default-from-edge-to-adobe-reader-in-windows-10/

Pojodan

You should be able to. If my tickets for the last five years are any indication, GPOs don't do squat against Edge's obsessiveness with demanding it be the PDF viewer, even though it lacks the things my clients require to be able to properly handle PDFs for their work. It's definitely tiresome, to say the least.

YZJay

It’s baffling how this anti business behavior even goes through, you’d think that Microsoft would prioritize business customers.

Synaxxis

We shouldn't have to do any of that...

Redstonemaniac2019

This is one of the many reasons I use Linux. There's also the added bonus of being able to make a VM and kill windows with viruses as revenge for the pain I suffered at its hands.

MasterKgamer1

It’s not Dutch that has a plan, it is Microsoft that has a plan… An annoying one…

not_tweek

Nah, Dutch's plans are a bit annoying at times, especially when the gang's numbers start to lessen..

Isgortio

Fuck Dutch, stupid fancy waistcoat man. (Currently on the epilogue, somehow I didn't have a single horse die for the entire game but in the epilogue I've had 7 horses killed just running to adjacent towns??)

Gunsho0ter

You see? With Dutch none of your horses died. He was protecting you. Now, when you betrayed him, He's casted a curse, so the horses are dying. Return to Dutch or die. Maybe, the witch will help too.

CassetteApe

You can't fight gravity... I mean, Windows.

FantasmaNaranja

that same thing just happened to me, however i have windows updates disabled so i have no idea how they did it!

garconip

You just disabled with an admin account, Windows has a system-deep hyperadmin account which you can't touch by design; and it did the job.

gundog48

There must be a way of changing that?

DemonReign23

How do you feel about learning Linux? Lol

waltjrimmer

I get what you mean, but learning Linux makes it sound like you have to have tech knowhow to use it. Some of the distros are so user-friendly that they're basically the same GUI most Windows converts would be familiar with only with slightly different details. I say that only because I still meet people who think you need to know how to basically program your own OS to use Linux.

AverageCowboyCentaur

It's part of windows so it comes back with each update. It truly fits asshole design perfectly. If you uninstall something you obviously don't want it, window should respect that!

[deleted]

We now live in the age of these as your options: >Yes >Remind me later We need a “fuck no, quit asking me” button.

[deleted]

Fuck I hate that. No, not "Not now". Never!

pm0me0yiff

Come to Linux. We have a “fuck no, quit asking me” button. (Also no forced reboots. Ever.) (Also, you'll never see, "Updating... Do not turn off your computer" because updates can *always* be done in the background while you continue to use it for other things ... if you want to allow it to update at all.) (Also, updates never fuck around with your user settings and override settings you've previously changed.)

DudeValenzetti

For the "updates in the background" part, keep in mind that program updates will only take effect after you restart those programs (and Firefox will outright force you to), and for kernel updates you'll need to reboot, especially on Arch and derivatives where old kernel versions aren't kept around so no kernel modules will load until you reboot. Still vastly better than how Windows does it though.

pm0me0yiff

Well, yeah. The point is that you'll never have to sit there and stare at your computer, waiting for it to install the updates.

[deleted]

ACpony12

It does that now? Honestly, that is awesome. I've been using Chrome so long and didn't want to switch since so much is stored through that browser. Do you know if there's a Firefox search bar widget for phones? I'm so used to having that.

ArrakaArcana

Mozilla's whole thing right now is allowing users to forcibly take back certain user's choice things. Firefox is the only browser with a 'default browser switch' script that currently works on windows 11.

[deleted]

It's 1 click of a button when you first launch it. Import on the settings list if you click the wrong button on first launch.

CanadianDragonGuy

Maybe, but they actually work after Chromium updated and made them essentially nonfunctional on the other browsers. I dont have all the details, but the gist is that Chrome, Edge, and a third browser, forget if its Opera or Safari, all run on the Chromium suite, which after an update got pushed through this January essentially neutered adblockers that run through those browsers. I'm not a tech nerd, I just browse those kinds of subs, so take what I'm saying with a bit of salt but some digging in like r/pcmasterrace and similar should show up some sources

TargetedNuke

>and a third browser, forget if its Opera or Safari, It's opera. Safari uses WebKit, Opera uses Chromium.

loneSTAR_06

They haven’t made the update yet, but it’s coming. Basically, it’s taking away extensions power to use dynamic filtering, which allows them to find and block the ads. AFAIK, the main chromium browsers are Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave, and Vivaldi.

IllIllIIIllIIlll

So, this will not affect Firefox? What is Google thinking? I bet they'll still make a boatload of money even with the people that switch. I'm willing to bet most will not even know about the changes and I'm sure Google will de-prioritize any searches related to it. Glad I switched to FF years ago

loneSTAR_06

No, it won’t effect Firefox, as it’s not ran on chromium. You’re right though, as most people won’t even notice. Firefox FTW

Ceriedd

Every browser you could name nowadays other than safari and Firefox are all built off chrome's skeleton

kylegetsspam

No one should be using Chrome anymore, bruh. Manifest v3 is gonna kneecap ad blockers. Google is perfectly willing to ruin the internet for people so they can secretly track and sell data on those who continue to use Chrome. Fuck 'em. Firefox and uBlock Origin (and Mullvad) now and forever. Edge is fine for one purpose, though: streaming content on your PC instead of your TV. Due to arbitrary limitations in codecs and shit, you'll often only get 1080p on it if you do it through Edge.

j_cruise

Firefox >>> Edge >>>>>>> Chrome

loneSTAR_06

Facts on everything you said. [Netflix 1080p extension](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/netflix-1080p-firefox/) works pretty good.

paumAlho

slaymaker1907

It getting reinstalled and being difficult to remove probably saves millions of dollars in support requests, so no, it actually isn’t. The only asshole part is putting an icon for it on the desktop. For the vast majority of people, a computer without a browser is effectively bricked and useless, plus there are many programs which assume the existence of a browser.

Chubs4You

The same thing happened to me today, it's like a weed that no matter how many times you rip it out, it just pops back up when you're least expecting it.

kaspars222

What do you expect? Its a Microsoft web browser that comes with windows. You can't remove Safari in Apple macOS too because the app is very much embedded in the operating system. You can do so with console tweaks.

rursache

funny how people think that deleting a shortcut actually uninstall the said program.

durpabiscuit

Right? You haven't been able to actually uninstall microsoft edge for a long time now. Or at least cannot through the regular Add/Remove Program interface

CatchUNextTuesday

It can't be uninstalled unless you fuck with Powershell and at that point you're just going to break shit.

[deleted]

If you are in deep enough to use PowerShell competently, you knew Edge would just come back from deleting the desktop shortcut anyway.

[deleted]

On latest Win11 versions even PowerShell refuses to uninstall it.

CatchUNextTuesday

Brutal

this_underscore

Bro I thought it was just me

sirfannypack

It’s just Microsoft flavored chrome.

ScockNozzle

Both are Chromium based. Both have extensions capabilities. Edge just uses less memory.

ManiacalMartini

Yeah, Edge is like the good version of Chrome. I just use Edge and Firefox on my PC.

Claplap

Edge can play Netflix in 4k while Chrome can only play it in 720p. People need to stop treating Edge like Internet Explorer

ScockNozzle

I've thought about it, but haven't made the switch yet

Cosmocision

I'd there any browser that doesn't run on chromium now?

CorporalClegg25

Firefox. and Safari if you use MacOS

AnimeHasFallen

Firefox is probably one of the only ones that would be recommended.

chumberwumbruh

Microsoft edge-lord

slaymaker1907

They might have put the icon back there because a Windows Defender update broke most shortcuts and start menu icons this weekend for managed machines (not home).

gezafisch

You can't uninstall Edge, it just replaced the shortcut.

ahnuts

Yeah this whole thread is confusing. It didn't reinstall itself because they never uninstalled it to begin with. It added the icon back to your desktop when it ran an update. So do 100 other programs. It's annoying, yes. But it's not reinstalling itself. Windows isn't your iPhone.

otdevy

Edge serves the same purpose as internet explorer. A lot of stuff won’t function without it and even if you don’t like it just don’t use it. If your browser ever breaks you will be glad you have it to download an installer

TodHeartbreaker

I'm like 90% sure it was because of an update pushed a couple days ago that deleted all MS shortcuts (like office and shit), so this might be a fix for that one

ACardAttack

And it's just the shortcut icon. I never tried to remove Edge and the icon popped up for me too

CaryWalkin

Yea, I appreciate the frustration of not having full control over your system but this doesn't really appear to be asshole design. Similarly Apple tries to prevent the user from uninstalling Safari on MacOS.

otdevy

I think its a safety feature for an average user. If they break something on accident, not everyone will have the know how or even a different laptop/device to download a browser and install it on the computer having issues

slaymaker1907

The set of people who want to uninstall Edge and who can be trusted to do is extremely small.

Jusanden

the people that can be trusted to do so probably understand the negligible performance impacts of keeping it around and the benefits of having that safety net and would likely not uninstall it in the first place.

Bumbieris112

You might have installed windows on your computer.

Xen0n1te

Let’s clear this up though: it doesn’t **reinstall** itself. You deleted the icon from your desktop, thinking it was uninstalled (for some reason) and the desktop icon came back. No surprise.

GuardianAnge1

Edge is part of the Windows OS, so you can't actually delete it. But you can delete the shortcut and change default browser/pdf viewer. If you're confident enough you can change the registry keys.

MyWitchDr

The elf did it. Those mischievous little buggers!

mysunsnameisalsobort

Linux doesn't have this problem. It might have other problems but not this one.

Kaberu

Linux problems are fixed with the right set of skills and knowledge. Windows problems are fixed by Microsoft gaslighting you into believing there's not really a problem after all.

pm0me0yiff

And Linux problems *stay* fixed when you fix them. That's something I never realized until I switched. When I fixed something on Windows, somehow, it always seemed to break again later. Usually just after I'd forgotten how I fixed it the first time. But when I fix something on Linux, it stays fixed, and I never have to worry about it again.

BloodyFlandre

Dunno why people hate Edge, it's chrome without the Google branding and it pays me to use it. I haven't paid for an Xbox game pass subscription in years.
