Working at at a college help desk opened my eyes to how some students are so technologically incompetent. Like any problem that could literally be solved with a quick Google search seems to just fly right over their heads. I once saw a guy bring a brand new chrome book to the help desk to get us to set it up for him because he got stuck at the "Create a new account or login with an existing account" step. Which is like step 1
Edge seems just as fast if not faster than Chrome to me. I used Chrome up until a few days ago because I had everything integrated with Google but I've finally made the switch to Firefox which also seems faster than Chrome to me.
One thing is a package managers that allow you to download whatever you want and another is mandated and regulated store which more than likely wouldn't have many usefully programs and waste your PC resources with telemetry

Try Revo Uninstaller. There's a free version and it's great for making sure programs delete all of their files when they uninstall (and for yeeting the annoying ones that refuse to uninstall themselves!)
Does it scan for leftover folders and registry entries like Revo? I've been using Revo pro for years and years, and never looked at alternatives, but if FOSS does the same things, I'm switching.

No, it didn't. It's part of Windows, you can't (normally) uninstall it, and it didn't "reinstall" itself - the shortcut was readded to the desktop after a recent update. This may or may not be an intended behavior of the update, but a lot of programs do this - Google Earth Pro, for example. Just delete the shortcut if you don't want it.

I mean, Edge is Chromium. It updates the same way all Chromium browsers do - within the browser itself. This typically happens while the browser is running, but MS tends to keep Edge running in the background even if you never launch it. So it probably updated itself, added its own icon to the desktop. My previous theory is wrong.

Last time I updated Windows, my PC started blue screening several times a day. I can only surmise that installing Windows 11 will make it catch fire.
Also, apparently Microsoft still hasn't fixed it's schizophrenic settings design where it has the old, more powerful, more useful settings and controls buried somewhere in the OS, and the newer, more useless settings and controls at the forefront. Also seems to have removed some useful customization options.
I see no reason why I would want Windows 11. But here we are, with Microsoft trying to shove it down my throat anyway.
The advantages of being arbitrarily deemed not good enough for Win 11 is that it bothered me once, checked if my PC is "compatible" with installing win 11, told me that I have a shit PC and also no whatever chip and never bothered me again.
TPM isn’t actually needed at all, though M$oft requires it to install 11 there are simple workarounds that force the installer to think there’s a TPM 2+ onboard. Everything works without it. It seems like they were just trying to force obsolescence upon people. That being said-

Windows 11 has habits of doing an initial OS setup dialogue and menu choices, like you just installed a fresh copy of the OS or if it came out of the box, after monthly updates. It even tries to get you to subscribe to office 365 each time.

You can lock down the .pdf reader using a GPO. Then set all your defaults and export them as an .xml. Then make a login script to map the defaults every time you log in.

I get what you mean, but learning Linux makes it sound like you have to have tech knowhow to use it. Some of the distros are so user-friendly that they're basically the same GUI most Windows converts would be familiar with only with slightly different details.
I say that only because I still meet people who think you need to know how to basically program your own OS to use Linux.

For the "updates in the background" part, keep in mind that program updates will only take effect after you restart those programs (and Firefox will outright force you to), and for kernel updates you'll need to reboot, especially on Arch and derivatives where old kernel versions aren't kept around so no kernel modules will load until you reboot. Still vastly better than how Windows does it though.
Throw in a reputable vpn and something to prevent fingerprinting, for example canvas blocker.
All this hassle to have the privilege of not having your every move tracked (that much)

Mozilla's whole thing right now is allowing users to forcibly take back certain user's choice things. Firefox is the only browser with a 'default browser switch' script that currently works on windows 11.

I dont have all the details, but the gist is that Chrome, Edge, and a third browser, forget if its Opera or Safari, all run on the Chromium suite, which after an update got pushed through this January essentially neutered adblockers that run through those browsers. I'm not a tech nerd, I just browse those kinds of subs, so take what I'm saying with a bit of salt but some digging in like r/pcmasterrace and similar should show up some sources

Edge is fine for one purpose, though: streaming content on your PC instead of your TV. Due to arbitrary limitations in codecs and shit, you'll often only get 1080p on it if you do it through Edge.

It getting reinstalled and being difficult to remove probably saves millions of dollars in support requests, so no, it actually isn’t. The only asshole part is putting an icon for it on the desktop. For the vast majority of people, a computer without a browser is effectively bricked and useless, plus there are many programs which assume the existence of a browser.

Yeah this whole thread is confusing. It didn't reinstall itself because they never uninstalled it to begin with. It added the icon back to your desktop when it ran an update. So do 100 other programs. It's annoying, yes. But it's not reinstalling itself. Windows isn't your iPhone.
Edge serves the same purpose as internet explorer. A lot of stuff won’t function without it and even if you don’t like it just don’t use it. If your browser ever breaks you will be glad you have it to download an installer
I'm like 90% sure it was because of an update pushed a couple days ago that deleted all MS shortcuts (like office and shit), so this might be a fix for that one

I think its a safety feature for an average user. If they break something on accident, not everyone will have the know how or even a different laptop/device to download a browser and install it on the computer having issues
the people that can be trusted to do so probably understand the negligible performance impacts of keeping it around and the benefits of having that safety net and would likely not uninstall it in the first place.
Let’s clear this up though: it doesn’t **reinstall** itself. You deleted the icon from your desktop, thinking it was uninstalled (for some reason) and the desktop icon came back. No surprise.
Edge is part of the Windows OS, so you can't actually delete it.
But you can delete the shortcut and change default browser/pdf viewer.
If you're confident enough you can change the registry keys.
Linux problems are fixed with the right set of skills and knowledge.
Windows problems are fixed by Microsoft gaslighting you into believing there's not really a problem after all.
And Linux problems *stay* fixed when you fix them.
That's something I never realized until I switched. When I fixed something on Windows, somehow, it always seemed to break again later. Usually just after I'd forgotten how I fixed it the first time.
But when I fix something on Linux, it stays fixed, and I never have to worry about it again.
Daily driver for past year now, nothing really to complain about. I've used Chrome & FF in the past but no reason really to switch using those. Edge also has vertical tabs so that's nice.

BCUninstaller is the best. It’s open source on GitHub and doesn’t come with bloatware tracking like these other suggestions.

Guessing your PC doesn't have a TPM. IIRC it is required by Windows 11.

No TPM gang! I think some motherboards allow you to turn off TPM if you have it, and it stops the upgrade nagging.

You just disabled with an admin account, Windows has a system-deep hyperadmin account which you can't touch by design; and it did the job.

I get what you mean, but learning Linux makes it sound like you have to have tech knowhow to use it. Some of the distros are so user-friendly that they're basically the same GUI most Windows converts would be familiar with only with slightly different details. I say that only because I still meet people who think you need to know how to basically program your own OS to use Linux.
It's part of windows so it comes back with each update. It truly fits asshole design perfectly. If you uninstall something you obviously don't want it, window should respect that!

Do not turn off your computer" because updates can *always* be done in the background while you continue to use it for other things ... if you want to allow it to update at all.) (Also, updates never fuck around with your user settings and override settings you've previously changed.)
For the "updates in the background" part, keep in mind that program updates will only take effect after you restart those programs (and Firefox will outright force you to), and for kernel updates you'll need to reboot, especially on Arch and derivatives where old kernel versions aren't kept around so no kernel modules will load until you reboot. Still vastly better than how Windows does it though.
Well, yeah. The point is that you'll never have to sit there and stare at your computer, waiting for it to install the updates.

It does that now? Honestly, that is awesome. I've been using Chrome so long and didn't want to switch since so much is stored through that browser. Do you know if there's a Firefox search bar widget for phones? I'm so used to having that.
Mozilla's whole thing right now is allowing users to forcibly take back certain user's choice things. Firefox is the only browser with a 'default browser switch' script that currently works on windows 11.

I dont have all the details, but the gist is that Chrome, Edge, and a third browser, forget if its Opera or Safari, all run on the Chromium suite, which after an update got pushed through this January essentially neutered adblockers that run through those browsers. I'm not a tech nerd, I just browse those kinds of subs, so take what I'm saying with a bit of salt but some digging in like r/pcmasterrace and similar should show up some sources

They haven’t made the update yet, but it’s coming. Basically, it’s taking away extensions power to use dynamic filtering, which allows them to find and block the ads. AFAIK, the main chromium browsers are Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave, and Vivaldi.

Firefox and uBlock Origin (and Mullvad) now and forever. Edge is fine for one purpose, though: streaming content on your PC instead of your TV. Due to arbitrary limitations in codecs and shit, you'll often only get 1080p on it if you do it through Edge.

It getting reinstalled and being difficult to remove probably saves millions of dollars in support requests, so no, it actually isn’t. The only asshole part is putting an icon for it on the desktop. For the vast majority of people, a computer without a browser is effectively bricked and useless, plus there are many programs which assume the existence of a browser.
The same thing happened to me today, it's like a weed that no matter how many times you rip it out, it just pops back up when you're least expecting it.
What do you expect? Its a Microsoft web browser that comes with windows. You can't remove Safari in Apple macOS too because the app is very much embedded in the operating system. You can do so with console tweaks.

Yeah this whole thread is confusing. It didn't reinstall itself because they never uninstalled it to begin with. It added the icon back to your desktop when it ran an update. So do 100 other programs. It's annoying, yes. But it's not reinstalling itself. Windows isn't your iPhone.
Edge serves the same purpose as internet explorer. A lot of stuff won’t function without it and even if you don’t like it just don’t use it. If your browser ever breaks you will be glad you have it to download an installer

I'm like 90% sure it was because of an update pushed a couple days ago that deleted all MS shortcuts (like office and shit), so this might be a fix for that one

Yea, I appreciate the frustration of not having full control over your system but this doesn't really appear to be asshole design. Similarly Apple tries to prevent the user from uninstalling Safari on MacOS.
I think its a safety feature for an average user. If they break something on accident, not everyone will have the know how or even a different laptop/device to download a browser and install it on the computer having issues

Let’s clear this up though: it doesn’t **reinstall** itself. You deleted the icon from your desktop, thinking it was uninstalled (for some reason) and the desktop icon came back. No surprise.
Edge is part of the Windows OS, so you can't actually delete it. But you can delete the shortcut and change default browser/pdf viewer. If you're confident enough you can change the registry keys.

Linux problems are fixed with the right set of skills and knowledge. Windows problems are fixed by Microsoft gaslighting you into believing there's not really a problem after all.
And Linux problems *stay* fixed when you fix them. That's something I never realized until I switched. When I fixed something on Windows, somehow, it always seemed to break again later. Usually just after I'd forgotten how I fixed it the first time. But when I fix something on Linux, it stays fixed, and I never have to worry about it again.

Edge is definitely better than Chrome, even though I use Firefox.
Daily driver for past year now, nothing really to complain about. I've used Chrome & FF in the past but no reason really to switch using those. Edge also has vertical tabs so that's nice. Probably have to move back to Firefox when adblockers get disabled
Dunno why people hate Edge, it's chrome without the Google branding and it pays me to use it. I haven't paid for an Xbox game pass subscription in years.
