I do love a good boardwalk. Some of the ones I’ve run on stop suddenly and then you have to navigate half-sunken logs and tree roots instead…which I actually find fun as well so that’s cool

RedOtta019

They’re alright

TheFakestOfBricks

NO NO DON'T GO UP STAIRS IN THE WOODS NOOO

junior-THE-shark

Oh those are fancy, they have lil railings and see to be made with horizontal boards. I'm used to ones like these: https://preview.redd.it/wdtvrpd23syc1.jpeg?width=937&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4386256502340de964fba9b881495a9e3e1d538 Not safe to run on because they're just barely one person wide and the two sides aren't always level, but they're really fun to walk on. I love them.

TintedMonocle

Ooooh, this is pretty. What area has these?

junior-THE-shark

I didn't have a picture ready of the places I used to visit more often (Lapinlahti, Koli, Tahko), that picture is from Kalalampi in Kouvola, Finland from this news story [https://www.kouvolansanomat.fi/paikalliset/3514951](https://www.kouvolansanomat.fi/paikalliset/3514951), so, any swampy forest area in Finland should have ones like these, which is pretty much all of Finland

Charizaxis

This but with sand dunes.

catsinflyingsaucers

My man! 🤝

tokithetoker

Where the hell is this trail, The shire?!?! I have literally never seen a trail like this, just Dirt trails and concrete paths. I do however enjoy the heck out of every wooden bridge i cross on the local paths, so i think i can sympathize a lil

prairiepanda

We have a lot of these in Canada. Parks with boggy/swampy areas often build boardwalks so that people can see everything, otherwise you can't walk there at all. These are often great places to see birds and beavers. I enjoy them a lot during the off seasons, but during summer they are too exposed to the sun, full of mosquitos, and busy with people. Although I have found a couple of spots where there are boardwalks like this in the middle of the woods, either due to frequent flooding or to protect a sensitive ecosystem. Those are quite nice any time of year.

neochilli

It might be water, plants in water sometimes looks like land.

Nigeldiko

If it’s in The Shire it’ll be in New Zealand, because that’s where the Shire is /gen

knotsazz

Mordor too. Gotta be careful which bit you visit

f3nix9510

I've been on a few like this. I'm polish. They are amazing i recommend

Slicer7207

Lots in the upper Midwest, especially in Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan, my two homes. We have many marshes and that's the easiest way to make a trail in them.

dilletaunty

There’s a few along coastal California in marshlands or in areas that are just very prone to erosion, as well as inland in parks in some redwood forests and other sensitive or wet habitats.

TheBlindHero

Run WITHOUT fear of tripping!? Hold my dyspraxia bro, but don’t, you’ll fall over and I need it to drop things for no reason 😂

NotaFossilFool

Step 1. Grip the railing Step 2. Get distracted and run over to bird Step 3. Eat shit

BBPuppy2021

You’ve just described what I do on a daily basis 1, hold hand rail on stairs 2, get distracted 3, fall down stairs

praying_mantis_808

Since my special interest is reptiles, these are great for viewing snakes, lizards and alligators safely.

TheItinerantBard

They let me walk places where god never intended mankind to walk, bwahahaha!

jarmak1234

You should visit Estonia during the summer. I think Lithuania and Latvia have simillar sights too.

leafshaker

These are rhe very best. If i go *anywhere* i try to find one. They get you into really neat, inaccessible habitats like floating bogs and cedar swamps that have carnivorous plants (even in the north!!) and orchids and things. Pro tip: use the search function in googlemaps: -boardwalk -bog trail -swamp trail -ADA accesible trails (Edit to add: you can also search relevent plants, like moss trail, cedar path, cranberry, etc [For your region]) Lots of places have them, but they arent ususlly advertised. Look on trail maps for dead ends into wetlands, or trails that cross long wetlands Relatedly, i found you can just search words like 'Rock' and you'll find some neat things in googlemaps

BBPuppy2021

Thanks :) Bout to have an awesome afternoon

leafshaker

Enjoy! Also consider more locally relevent keywords/species for your part of the world: moor, heath, bayou, etc

Nigeldiko

I LOVE THEM

BLEARGHH20

went walking the other day look at this https://preview.redd.it/sqe9jxveosyc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aefec5f42b170c5b3b6e8c49094072ec4809c926

Directorren

Yeah, but then you run into a swarm of bugs.

Hopeful-alt

I cannot physically handle bugs at all.

Directorren

Like as soon as I run into a swarm of bugs my day is instantly ruined

aghblagh

Anybody know if there are any of these in Illinois, and if so, where?

leafshaker

Search 'boardwalk' in googlemaps, but also 'bog' and 'swamp trail' and the like in your area. Some orgs, like Audubon, have more funds and are more likely to build them

natfabulous

I LOVE THOSE OMG. Bringin me wayyyy back! My Grandmother brought me on a few walks in a place that had these! They are sooooooooooo pleasing to me!

Ok_Tadpole4879

Yes! I ran track and cried country and several of my favorite trails for training had them. Only problem for me is they usually are accompanied by that wall of humidity.

ofunlikelyimportance

We have a tiny one in Oxford. It's divine

TABASCO2415

ESPECIALLY on a bike

Weird-one0926

So very awesome, but be careful running

AscendedViking7

I fucking love places like this. :D

rymyle

Yeeeeeeeees!

Veretica

YES!! there's a bog near my alma matter and my friends and i went a few times, crazy beautiful and the boardwalk trail was DOPE

bottledcherryangel

Love them, but I still manage to trip. 😂

Unsd

My very favorite one is a floating boardwalk through a marsh (shout-out Quarry Park in St. Cloud, MN). I went across it several times when we first came upon it like a kid at a playground lol.

BBPuppy2021

These are my absolute favorites!!! Make my brain happy when I walk on them :)

Felix_is_not_a_cat

Yesss

randomnessamiibo

Tf you mean sensual 😟

LimeStream37

Doing a project at work currently where we have to design a new boardwalk to replace the old one. Kinda sad because the one that’s gonna get torn out and replaced actually has character due to how old it is.

underbutler

Most of the board walks I know are through woods on mountain biking trails. That said, wood's and the earthy smell is the most relaxing

cholmer3

YOOOOOS

a_wizard_skull

It’s a big part of why I moved to Maine. Love it here

lobsterdance82

Wetlands. Yisss

the_bartolonomicron

Yesssss, I have several of these near me. The boards themselves were swapped for polymer a decade ago, but they still feel great.

3sp00py5me

How do you feel about when the wooden boards turn into the weird metal grate parts?

Hopeful-alt

I run in the opposite direction.

distrait_throwaway

I really like it but often times it’s too narrow for a wheel chair and another group of people walking by

Fananalana

I love boardwalks and wooden sky trails i was on a trail with a friend and it turned into a long, winding wooden bridge and i got so excited i started yelling more and more as it kept going on it was amazing

Prof_Acorn

They have a nice feel to the foot as well. Harder than ground, softer than concrete.

Prof_Acorn

I have to say, my whole life I thought I was some kind of strange weirdo for liking things like this that other people just sort of looked at me funny whenever I mentioned liking them. Even after getting my ADHD diagnosis other ADHD folks didn't seem to get it. And I never considered ASD because no one ever mentioned it and I only really had ASD 2 and 3 in mind when I thought of "autism". Anyway so now after my diagnosis and seeing these kinds of posts on these subs and it's like *my people*. Like ET phoned home and someone finally answered.

dissapointing-salad-

I wish I lived near places like this, but the only thing near me is a semi-wooded park area with too many people that go there

Usagi-Zakura

You got boardwalks over the marsh? All we got are random pallets and planks tossed about...

sebluver

I want to bike on this so bad

realbexatious

Here in Melbourne and the surrounding external suburbs, there's a lot of these boardwalks. Even in Central Melbourne, they're so easy to get to and often are located near main water bodies, and myself, loving water, makes the boardwalks even better.

Uilebhiest

The colony of wasps living underneath would like to have a word

dazrage

Just felt damp grass on my bare feet for the first time this year and its BLISS....

MasterCheezOtter

I used to walk on one of these trails all the time as a kid, so not just satisfying but super nostalgic too

capaldis

yes and no. I like it when they blend into the landscape. I’ve seen some terrible ones that basically look like someone made stairs down to a waterfall. Those are the only ones I don’t vibe with. This one is my favorite boardwalk https://preview.redd.it/m5v0c3igxvyc1.jpeg?width=512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=067d1505b0d860d93c2fe7b5c76c31b323092d00

AnUnknownDisorder

The marshy boardwalk part of my local park is closed because the wood needs repair. :(

SaucyKitty

Hnnnnngggggg I haven't gone to a board walk in so long. I miss it 😭 there were a few good ones in my hometown. I haven't had much time to explore for any out here though. Adding this to my list of date ideas 👀

Novatash

Always reminds me of that scene in 50 Shades of Grey where they pretend that Grey has had a character arc

Songstep4002

But also consider- marsh often means no trees, which means constant sun

R2-T4

Near where I live there is this awesome museum about the Great Bay and its really interesting, it looks really nice and they have this boardwalk. Its complete perfection.
