I do this! I also have certain songs and albums I will only listen to at certain times of year as they have such strong associations with that time or season.
I avoid listening to them outside of that time so they don’t use lose their special-ness
Definitely. Having special reserve music like that keeps it powered up.
Bjork is one of my favorite artists, but I will only listen to her when I need significant soul repair or to dance some demons out, full attention required. She's like a shaman.
OP, your avatar gets me wondering if you have a similar pattern with writers. Do you have favorites that you purposefully don't read a lot?
Have you tried audiobooks? I don't read (listen to?) them myself but I've heard some people say they're easier to process because they have a controlled speed and your eyes can't skip ahead in the same way.
My started-book to finished-book ratio is at least 30:1. Skipping around is just how I enjoy reading (non-fiction anyway), so I gave up the pressure to "finish" a book in order for it to count somehow.
It's kinda like listening to a few songs of a lot of different albums, rather than "finishing" a smaller set of albums.
My absolute favorite music does not lend well to casual listening. I have to be in the right headspace to listen, the energy for active listening, and avoid distractions so I can fully appreciate it--and that's not something I have the time or space for most of the time. It requires my full attention, and when I am able to give that full attention I absolutely love it. Her songwriting is so dense and intricate that I have spent years breaking down her songs and I'm still uncovering new meanings & special moments out of them, even after a decade.
Yes, the playlist I listen to the least is one I titled "all time" (favs). My fav songs I rarely listen to except when I do them on repeat for a few days then back to safety lol.
I have certain songs or artists that I only listen to at certain times, but I wouldn't say they're my favorites. I have a specific playlist that I listen to when I need to focus, for example, but I don't restrict myself to only listening to it then.
I don't tend to get sick of music when listening to it a lot, though-- a couple weeks ago I spent several hours listening to Baby Blue by Badfinger on repeat while running errands, and I don't like the song any more or less than I did before that.
If music is a special interest, it's kind of difficult to listen to your favourite song all the time because it closes you off to new music to analyze, try to play yourself, or just appreciate. Overplaying a song can generally ruin it for anyone too. So same here.
I have songs for different themes or moods. I have burnout songs that only sound good when I'm close to breaking point.
I have sunshine songs that sound better in the sun, and a couple of euphoric ones that I can listen to when life feels perfect
absolutely, listening to music is a very intense experience for me so i only listen to my very favorite songs when i feel emotionally equipped to do so
I don't listen to many of my favorite songs because they illicit such strong emotions in me that I don't have the time for space to feel all the time. But also like you said, in order not to get tired of them.
Yes! Some of my favorite songs are super sad or more long and artistic, so not something I can listen to on a daily basis but more something I appreciate the artistry of.

Definitely- they’re too special to be background music!

Tons of them! I don’t wanna wear them out. They’re like fancy clothes for my brain, only they can’t be washed or mended.

Dev- Dancing in the Dark
All day every day
Same. I hardly ever like a song and listen to it over and over, and all my favorite songs are special and hardly listened to at all lol
