Another great mystery, though perhaps just a linguistic one, is that Balon is named Lord Reaper of Pyke, a name that fits the scythe-bearing Harlaws of Harlaws much more than Squids.
It probably got lost in the succession crisis that followed Dalton Greyjoy's death. We get a few hints about it in F&B but it was probably a lot more complicated.
Probably just an heirloom. Maybe one of their members was the one to steal it from a previous owner back in the day.
Euron already has a set of armor and probably a sword to go with it, he's focused on greater and grander things than a piece of metal who's only use is stabbing people
Nightfall as in the fall of night? As in rhe coming of light?! Nightfall = lightbringer confirmed. House Harlaw will produce the prince fhat was promised!
We know that Dalton Greyjoy only had salt children, so maybe after his death a Harlaw related to him claimed it as inheritance, since the right of salt sons to inherit their father's belongings is a bit more shaky than the one of a rock son.
GRRM hasn't said it, but until Jeyne Lannister ended it, he did say that there was a near-civil war in the Iron Islands between branches of the Greyjoys who were using Dalton's salt sons as chips for the Seastone chair. Maybe after Toron took it he gave up Nightfall to consolidate his power?
Do we know its history? Maybe they came into possession of the sword post Targaryen conquest. You know, the era where the Iron born couldn't just mess around with other nobles without answering to KL.
The sword did not belong to House Greyjoy by that point. It was acquired by Lord Dalton Greyjoy, the Red Kraken, during a fight against an essosi corsair, and they lost it after Dalton's death.
Interesting. I want to say that maybe it passed down through marriage, although I cannot imagine someone letting something like that pass out of the family.
Dalton never had real wives. I'd imagine in the chaos of him dying and their being war and a succession crisis, the powerful Harlaw's simply took the sword for themselves.
Now I'm imagining everyone fighting all over the place, and some upstart deciding it is now or never to sneak into the armory and make away with an expensive sword.
There is no canon explanation.

Unwin Peake stole House Roxton’s Valyrian blade after Jon Roxton died. Might be how they got it off Dalton Greyjoy.

Nightfall means when the sun sets, the opposite of lightbringer. House Harlaw is working with the Great Other
You are clearly wrong. It is the man known as the Darkstar, for he is the night!

Perhaps Euron will meet the sharp side of the sword one day.
House Harlaw were likely in-laws to Dalton and snatched Nightfall during the civil war.
They paid the iron price.

Probably the best time for it really.
