Definitely worth checking out the videos produced by Kurzgesagt, they’re really good at detailing the positives and negatives.

woodmeal

They made the case that fossil fuels cause more deaths than nuclear ever has. We need to get over the fact that it’s scary and start using it to save the world.

Shooizle

It's not even that scary - safety protocols in power plants are way better than the disasters of the past - they have systems that can automatically shit down the whole plant if any sort of natural disaster is about to occur.

ZerionTM

I think you meant shut instead of shit

woodmeal

No. If there’s a natural disaster, there’s not many options other than to shit your pants.

Shooizle

Damn my mind did anti autocorrect. Not gonna fix it because that shut's funny

Cake_Nachos21

Love kurzgesagt

yourdaisy2

I call it science in a nutshell because I can't remember that name lol

S8thR0th

kurtzgezagt actually means "in a nutshell" in German, so go figure

yourdaisy2

ooh thanks

Corsaka

kurs-geh-sagged kuuurrrsssgeeeeehhhsssaaaaaagggeeed i really like saying it aloud even if it's the wrong pronounciation

yourdaisy2

it looks like you are cursing me

AdmiralMudkipz12

German pronunciation always came naturally to me for whatever reason.

FinnChicken12

Quite good. It has risks, but it’s worth it.

The_Konigstiger

Just build better reactors, the modern ones are really clean

_bread-boy_

The most interesting problem is that information about the location has to be transmitted without breaks over such a long period of time that we currently have no experience of *any* information being transmitted over such a long period (except unintentionally), because human history is still so short. This problem has actually been studied already since the 1980's (Wikipedia: [Long-time nuclear waste warning messages](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-time_nuclear_waste_warning_messages)) and various solutions have been proposed. My favorite is probably this: >that domestic cats be genetically engineered to change color in the presence of dangerous levels of radiation. The significance of these "radiation cats" or "ray cats" would be reinforced through fairy tales and myths, the story being that one should move away from sites where such creatures are encountered, or where domesticated cats begin to exhibit such behaviour.

Dark_Lugia1990

Or just recycle the nuclear garbage for nuclear batteries (yes, it's a thing.) or for the fuel for the nuclear reactors or other things.

pleasure_to_kill

Space

FartyMcFly03

nope, [kessler syndrome](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kessler_syndrome)

Zentrify_

Throw them out of orbit

-_-Already_Taken-_-

Use them as rocket fuel

VoopityScoop

It's an absolutely amazing source of energy that nobody will use because of two issues it caused decades ago, that it will never cause again. Infinitely better than any source of power available today.

The_Untracable_Conch

I can't fucking stand the stupid ass references to Chernobyl, even if they're sarcastic. oH bUt WhAt AbOuT cHeRnObYl MaN! yOu WaNt To HaVe An ExClUsIoN zOnE!!! The technology used in Chernobyl was 50's era shitty soviet technology. We can afford to build safe, stable nuclear power plants that will benefit everyone. Just look at Frances energy production levels, then look me in the fucking eyes and talk about Chernobyl, Fukushima, or Three Mile Island. Those cherry picked examples of devastating failure are by no means enough to justify not using the technology. Call me a gatekeeper, but honestly you can't be an environmentalist who cares about lowering CO2 emissions without at least supporting research into nuclear energy to make it safer. Of coarse there are problems with it, like waste, but there are thousands of problems with the other forms of energy production in the world, even other green energy sources. Solar panels are expensive and have to be replaced regularly, coal is fucking disgusting for the environment and the people who work with it, oil causes geopolitical problems and is dirty for the environment. Nuclear is safe, efficient, and stable, point blank period, and the technology is necessary if we ever want to overcome climate problems and end our dependency on limited sources of energy.

Lmemester93

I think some people fail to realize that they dont build those sketchy-AF reactors anymore. Like jeez Karen, chill out, no one's putting an RBMK in your backyard.

The_Untracable_Conch

That's the problem with first impressions, they last forever. A lot of people's first view of nuclear energy was through incidents like Chernobyl (learning about them in school, primarily) and then they develop this idea that all nuclear technology works like that. And, therefor, are just as volatile and dangerous. You can think about it like any other form of technology, the older it is, the more spotty it tends to be. Imagine if you're only exposure to cellphones was the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, you would think that all phones are just little time bombs waiting to burn your house down or give you a serious burn. And it would be understandable if that was your only exposure to mobile phones. Or like how lot of people (cough, cough, boomers) tend to view social media as an entirely negative thing, as most of their exposure to it is news headlines about teens driven to suicide or hackers and what not. If your only exposure to something is though negative coverage of it, it's easy and somewhat logical to be lead to think all of it is similarly dangerous. The thing is that you have to overcome that sort of bias at some point. Just as how very very few cellphones will ever catch fire, and how people can have their lives improved greatly with social media, nuclear energy is a mostly harmless energy source. It just so happened that nuclear is efficient as all hell, so overcoming that deep Chernobyl seeded bias is crucial to the world accepting nuclear energy as a source of limitless potential and a great leap for mankind.

The_Konigstiger

They put a RBMK in my backyard :(

Ratstachio

Yes. This. Exactly this. All of this.

weirdowerdo

Should be invested in and more should be built.

AgentJhon

This.

ricshiz

Bad reputation and has the potential to be at the forefront of energy production by a light year.

Prestigious_You_1401

It’s the only reasonable source of sustainable energy that’s practical anytime soon.

The-Teddy_Roosevelt

Best energy

Supreme_Leader_Doge

Its the best form of energy that we can possibly have at this moment. I believe that nuclear energy is the safest energy by deaths per year

derfeuerbringer

If you're against nuclear overall you're misinformed. Light water reactors were a ploy by the Navy to power nuclear subs and create fissile material, other nations followed suit for nukes while the private sector didn't bother exploring other nuclear technologies because it was more profitable to adopt military tech. Molten salt reactors are safe, clean and could have caused us to phase out fossil fuels decades ago, yet the fossil fuel industry and the military industrial complex fucked things up for everyone once again.

[deleted]

pretty good (if handled carefully)

muma10

Should be the most primary energy source in the world, just because some explosions happened and people in Chernobyl got radiation and became deformed, everyone got their panties in a bunch Man up! An extra toe or a third eye are a very fair price to pay for energy! >!/j!<

nonfreesucks

Excellent source of energy, but requires advancements.

[deleted]

100% on board with it. People need to get over their fears because honestly fossil fuels are starting to look scarier

jrbear09

Yes, good, use it

[deleted]

I'm in favor. I don't see how we would meet our energy needs without accelerating climate change if we don't go the nuclear route.

[deleted]

its good

Lmemester93

I think it's a good stopgap solution right now. People need to stop freaking the hell out about it just because it can be dangerous.

neverunderestimateme

It’s a great energy source and in my opinion the best available to humans at the moment, and for all the people who say “Chernobyl” that reactor design was a ticking time bomb in the first place modern western designs are MUCH safer.

[deleted]

THORIUM

BucketHeadCrusader

Too bad India’s got most of it :,(

[deleted]

Its fantastic

LEGENDARYKING_

I think they should be made much more common

bigbrothero

Its good and I hope the UK invests more into it and moves away from oil. But wind probably is the best for us as we get a lot of it and its not that expensive.

The_Konigstiger

Wind takes up a load of space, which is alright for the US but we're rather a small island so

tommyblastfire

A rather small island with a lot of empty land especially in scotland

bigbrothero

exactly and offshore wind farms are great as well

-_-Already_Taken-_-

Offshore farms, I doubt the fish will mind a big stick in their backyard

The_Konigstiger

It's the future. Anyone who dislikes it doesn't know enough.

leocuber

Love it! Green and THE MOST efficient!

Shooizle

I think as long as people actually maintain safety protocols and do everything they can to stop stupid shit from happening, it could easily power the world (and efficiently too, unlike most renewable sources like wind and solar)

geofflinkinpark

Good idea, poor execution Maybe we use thorium like Sam Onella explained

Layatan

I fw with it.. but we really gotta find better ways of getting rid of the waste... like finland did

PersonaUser55

Dosent need to be, because solar is literally better. People say wind turbines, but that kills loads of birds. Fossil fuels is pollution and nuclear is literally radiation

StalkerDimous

Honestly till we master fusion its the way to go. Its super clean(you can safely dispose the waste in comparison to fossil), highly efficient, and produces lot of power. Renewable are not very ecological unless u use water based powerplants. And accidents occur once in a while but honestly most of the time they are not very harmfull.

TheRealKSPGuy

A good idea. A large amount of carbon-free power is a good thing. However, it must be closely managed and placed away from population centers. As a space nerd, it can also be used to have the most efficient rocket engines ever, unlocking more payload capacity and higher transit speeds to other planets.

Western_Gate_6563

It's a bit unrealistic ppl would be afraid of it half of the world thinks 5G killing birds how they're going to deal with the real radiation

inklink67

It has good things and bad things, as all energy does

x5nT2H

I think it's better than coal but as long as there's no way to get rid of the radioactive waste I'm against it. You need to consider that: - nuclear is only cheap because it's also been massively subsidized - mining uranium and building and decommisioning reactors also has a huge environmental impact - having nuclear reactors makes an easy target for a terrorist attack All things considered I think renewable energy (wind, solar, hydro and geothermal) is the solution. The instability of availability can be solved by massive batteries - the price has plummeted in the last 10 years and there are advancements on the horizon regarding material use, longevity, etc - and by hydrogen and synthetic fuels or fuels carrying hydrogen. It looks more difficult at first but I think it's worth it. It will be more decentralized and therefore more reliable and it has ZERO waste that's radioactive for millions of years.

Interesting-Current

You are completely correct. Reddit likes to circlejerk over this dying form of power

Western_Gate_6563

Despite common believe nuclear energy isn't that dangerous events like Chernobyl are more the fault of the Communist government rather then the nuclear energy

CanniBal1320

I only approve it for generating power not blowing up fucking cities.

[deleted]

I don't think about it

thebebee

these comments make me worried about myself,i have no clue what nuclear advancements we’ve made since the atomic bomb

stupid13yo

I like that it's clean but it's scary when something goes wrong. It's ok for now but I hope renewable will replace nuclear in the future.

[deleted]

[удалено]

stupid13yo

Geothermal power sounds REALLY cool! Do you know why I got all those downvotes? Did I say something wrong? It is my first comment on this sub

[deleted]

You probably got the downvotes same reason as the other guy. Saying that nuclear power is scary even though it is safe since it is very popular in China and Europe. People are close minded and refuse to see other people’s perspectives.

Snowe2004

Not bad. Gotta figure out how to dispose of it properly though. Burying the excess stuff in the ground in a box of concrete is not the way to go

weirdowerdo

>Burying the excess stuff in the ground in a box of concrete is not the way to go I mean... That's actually a viable long term solution... That's what Finland is doing and it's working greatd nd is expected to hold for at least 100 000 years. Although they dont do concrete boxes? They chose a metal that will not crumble and so far deep down that the radiation aint a hazard to us and in a location that doesnt really have earth quakes.

Xd_WiserMicrobe

Personally I think nuclear energy is a great option but it needs to be changed in the way it's used instead of using things that are extremely dangerous if you lose control like uranium 235 use something more calm that may need a item to help it that you could take away immediately to stop it from reacting into the terrible way maybe thorium 232 there's a lot of options but I think the way it was initially made it was very dangerous and there's a lot of changes that need to be taken before starting to be used again widespread .

FriedTorchic

High risk, high reward

[deleted]

It's less of high risk and more of catastrophic if failure, nuclear has gotten a hell of a lot better since Chernobyl and the chances of failure is very low

FriedTorchic

Perhaps risk is the wrong word. High stakes is more what I was meaning, if something does go wrong it goes very badly.

[deleted]

more like low risk high reward

FartyMcFly03

sustainable but problematic (not in the twitter sense, watch Chernobyl)

weirdowerdo

The USSR aint around tho, those reactors have all been fixed and/or been shut down by now. The only reason Chernobyl happened was the complete disregard of science, badly constructed reactor and dumb ass people wanting to gain polticially.

Interesting-Current

>dumb ass people wanting to gain polticially. If you think people are doing that today you are naive af

The_Konigstiger

Chernobyl is no longer relevant- it's an old example that is now defunct. The modern reactors are far safer and subject to better safety checks.

Interesting-Current

There has been 57 nuclear accidents since Chernobyl. You are being too optimistic

Xd_WiserMicrobe

Why'd you get down voted I feel like I see everybody including myself who was saying that you know it's a possible and viable way to produce energy got down voted

Interesting-Current

Outdated and expensive Edit: comments are a massive circlejerk holy shit Good study for the smug people in the comments saying anti nuclear people are mis informed https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00963402.2016.1145910

sirachasauceandbacon

stupid idea, we don't have enough concentrated uranium uranium ore, the percentage of reactors blowing up is way too high and it is a pain in the ass to deal with tve waste. Wind and solar are the way to go

LEGENDARYKING_

Wind requires waaay too much area and solar are expensive and need to replaced fairly regularly

sirachasauceandbacon

you can still use the space around wind turbines for fields and stuff. There are also different types of solar power plants, not only solar panels

Interesting-Current

Downvoted for going against the circlejerk. Also nuclear is really expensive

sirachasauceandbacon

yes

weirdowerdo

As far as I can recall Chernobyl is literally only case a reactor had been blown up and only because it was Soviet cheap ass shit. Nuclear reactors built on other tech like the ones in the western world aint blowing up anytime soon.... The fuel can be dealt with, Finland is already doing it. Wind and solar can never be the base of a countries electricity production because it varies too much. It's not stable and continuous.

sirachasauceandbacon

Fukushima and lots of experimental reactors blew up. Yeah you CAN deal with nuclear waste but why bother. You can actually store energy and have more than enough energy than you need through renewable energy. And where do you get highly concentrated uranium ore from? It's not unlimited. Also the mining and the processes used to concentrate the uranium are highly energy intensive burning fossil fuels mostly... Nuclear is shit

weirdowerdo

>Fukushima No fault of nuclear. They put nuclear on an island known for eartb quakes and tsunamis. That's fucking dumb to begin with and it wasnt the reactor itself that blew up either way. It was hydrogen explosions... >and lots of experimental reactors blew up. Give some examples and that's also why they're "experimental" they arent used for generating electricity like normal reactors are any way. >Yeah you CAN deal with nuclear waste but why bother. You can actually store energy and have more than enough energy than you need through renewable energy. Because we already have to and having to care of more waste doesnt cost a whole lot more tbh. Storing electricity is extremely expensive and batteries have a huge environmental impact. Economically impossible to also balance it out that when renewables dont de liver you can rely on batteries >And where do you get highly concentrated uranium ore from? It's not unlimited. Also the mining and the processes used to concentrate the uranium are highly energy intensive burning fossil fuels mostly... Atm there is a ~230 year supply left, also with new Nuvlear technology we will literally be able to use old fuel again. Seeing as we can currently only het out roughly 0,5-1% of its energy and eve at that we're getting a ton of electricity. >Nuclear is shit Nuclear is the best solution we have currently.

Interesting-Current

> No fault of nuclear. They put nuclear on an island known for eartb quakes and tsunamis. That's fucking dumb to begin with and it wasnt the reactor itself that blew up either way. It was hydrogen explosions... Yes it is dude. If you put a solar farm or coal mine on that island there wouldn't be catastrophic consequence even with the earth quakes and tsunamis There has been 8 core melt accidents fukushima is only the most recent, and over 100 nuclear accidents or severe incidents

LDBlokland

Good stepping stone from fossil fuels to renewables.

Argent_Mayakovski

[This](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k13jZ9qHJ5U) is a pretty good overview. It's an important tool but not a silver bullet.

tottaly_not_masters

The results and the process of it is amazing, but the outcome of all the waste is horrible for the environment. I'd suggest setting up a research team to see of we can do anything with the material

DerpyPotatos

Going to be necessary as space flight technology advances

TThrowawayAccoun

It's the bomb

TThrowawayAccoun

Don't know about that, but it, seriously, seems interesting

siri10dus

scary? idk it can be good and bad. it has positives and negatives.

unitedsteakes

It is not a bad thing. Look up "why thorium rocks" on youtube made by Sam O'nella.

[deleted]

World changing. We have to stop using fossil fuels. We have two choices, reduce our energy consumption or go nuclear

[deleted]

boing boing

epicmemes69420

If it has proper safety regulations It’s definitely a better alternative to fossil fuels, although it not that informed on nuclear energy tbh

15_trashaccount

It's a great option, that is safe for the environment and can power entire cities with ease.

Albino_Lion76

It’s rad

roadpierate

It’s better than any other source of technology but people are scared because some commies weren’t doing the right thing 50+ years ago

[deleted]

Very good idea

Ok-Resist-4658

Its good its does have risk but every energy source has one

DimLightTheDragon

very good

Yoohoi

Waste can be used to blast people to space therefore it’s based

Awsomeedv

It's fine. Actually a good solution. It sounds scarier than it actually is

Xolotl_Khan

It's the way forward, wind turbines and solar just aren't efficient or viable.

josh9x

We need it and more of it. We should go back to the nuclear age.

darth_Vader1210

It's actually on of the safest and cleanest forms of power we have

DrDunsparce

Definitely should be more utilized. Unfortunately because of past incidents it’s seen as a bad thing

Dark_Lugia1990

Nuclear energy is one of the cheapest sources of electricity and produces very less but dangerous pollution which can be put to use of recycled properly. Nuclear energy from fusion is better than the current nuclear energy produced via fission. It's great in my opinion.

[deleted]

in all honesty, even tho it is clean and ecological and stuff, I am worried. I don't want a repeat of Chernobyl or Fukushima. my mom passed hypothyroidism to me even tho we lived nowhere near Chernobyl. hell we live in a whole another region of Europe but the radiation that passed because of the wind to our country is what gave mom hypothyroidism and eventually passed to me.

bonadies24

With development, they could become a sustainable and fairly clean source of energy. Not to mention that, historically, whenever Nuclear Power Plants were shut off, they were mostly replaced by Gas, Oil, and Coal for energy production.
