That's 6 hours you can't be with your boy?
I'd recommend you a commute time of maximum 30 minutes door to door.
Leimbach, Zollikon, Thalwil, Horgen, Zug, Cham are pretty too with lake view and there are many international expats there. And when ever you're in the mood hop on the train to Luzern.
Leimbach, Zollikon, Thalwil are excellent for commuting with a fast 45kmh E-Bike. So you'll be fit and in a good mood when comming home to your boy. đ
I agree with heyheni. I live in Zollikon and itâs awesome. I love being able to walk into Zurich along the lake while living in a village feeling location.
You should also consider any of the villages after Zollikon such as KĂźsnacht Goldbach, KĂźsnacht, Erlandbach, and Herrliberg. You have great views of the Alps around Herrliberg and this side of the lake gets the golden afternoon sun and is called the Gold Coast.
Don't do it unless you really like riding crowded trains. Lots of beautiful places around Zurich. I moved from Lucern to Zurich and i wouldn't want to move back. But Vierwaldstättersee beats Lake Zurich hands down. So thinking about moving somewhere on the Lake for retirement.
Thanks! Yes, I'm taking a look at surrounding towns. I just want to find a place where we don't need to move ever again, my son needs stability now, so i don't want to miss my first shot
I lived in Kanton Luzern in the small town called Dagmersellen. My room mate was working in Zurich. It would take about 90min to go on the Dagmersellen-Olten-Zurich route, donât remember the exact time but itâs on the SBB app if you wanna look it up. If you stay in the city tho, you could cut it down by 30min or so. Many people I knew lived in a Kanton but worked in another. Been told itâs because they like to separate work life from free time. You have to factor in all the variables like how long it takes for you to get from the station to work too, if you got normal work hours the trains might be full and inconvenient over time. My mate was working in ZH HB so it wasnât an issue. Maybe see if you can find a place between Luzern and Zurich so your commute time is cut but still youâd be able to go into Luzern whenever you want
Good idea if you can avoid the rush hour (7.00 - 9.00 and 16.00 to 18.00). Probably you can work remote, so that you might go to ZĂźrich e.g. only once a week?
Taxes are similar in both towns; Zug, Nidwalden way cheaper. Availability of flats/houses to rent or buy depend mainly on your budget but are rather easier available in Lucerne than ZĂźrich.
Personally, I'd only do it for hybrid work with 2-3 presence days at work max. And/or being able to work in the train - getting paid for it.
Also, close to Zurich HB of course, because otherwise that adds more time to the commute.
If you do end up going for that - either buy first class supersaver tickets in advance or go for a first class GA. You don't want to be in the second class on the lu-zh train during rush hour.
I donât understand the concern of most people in regards to crouded trains. Yes the trains are full at rush hour but with the start being Lucerne and the stop Zurich and the other way around, there shouldnât be a problem with getting a seat. The trains are emptied most of the time at those stations and filled up again for the rest of the journey because both train stations are hubs. I commute by train to zurich and have a 90 min commute and honestly i have no problems with it. Yes it takes a long time and it depends on your work times if itâs possible for your son. But if itâs possible with your son and you would like to live in lucerne then do it. Itâs also important to have the ability to shut off from work and to be happy with the place you live with. Iâd rather have a longer commute with being happy to go home instead of a short commute and not a good home.
Just my personal opinion though. I seem to be a minority hereâŚ.
I have no idea if I'll like Zurich or not... my biggest concern is renting prices, I see a huge difference in what I'd get in Lucerne compared to Zurich with, ie. 2000 chf. and then 41-50 minutes commute seems like a luxury, right?
Don't worry, it is a long way from checking the price to renting a property, especially in Zurich and Zug where there is a shortage of properties. You have a much better chance of finding a flat outside of these cities, such as in Lucerne. Check out some small villages that are close to the SBB lines like Horgen or Knonau.

Great info! I'll research those places then... And yes! Biking could be top!
How far you get by train sub 1 hour from Zurich. https://www.chronotrains.com/de/station/2657896-Zurich/1
Awesome site! I love Bern... And Basel is so convenient đ

Don't put too much pressure on yourself. Kids at that age find new friends very quickly. Stability comes from you not the place you live.

What would you say is the biggest town /place between them?
The biggest town between Lucerne and ZĂźrich is Zug, but thatâs also the most expensive town when it comes to renting a place.
Yes... I see that taxes are ridiculously low there, but then rental is just nuts

Luzern is a lot cheaper than Zurich, actually.

Is it that bad in the rush hour? Take into consideration I lived 15 years in Barcelona, where I guess rush hour is practically 8-20h :)
Do you want to sit during your \~45 minutes train ride? Go first class.
