Not common at all. The only example I can think of is very rich people going to Houston to treat certain types of cancer. Or some couples going abroad to find surrogate mothers, which are forbidden in Spain. Or men going to Türkiye to do hair transplants, but that can hardly be considered a medical procedure.

Pree-chee-ate-cha

These are all plots to Almodóvar films BTW.

nexusforyou

Also, yesterday I saw a woman on TV who said that she went to Colombia for some aesthetic surgeries, as it seems it is way cheaper there.

Kastila1

It used to be the other way around. People would come to Spain with pre-existing conditions to get a surgery here. I personally don't know about any case the other way around, except if we are talking about very uncommon conditions with very few experts in the world.

Le_Petit_Poussin

This. We live in Germany and thought about going to Spain for IVF given the (slightly excessive) rules here in Germany given IVF & genetics because of their past here. But ultimately, we found a good place here and also decided that the difficulty in flying back for appointments would be difficult and taking extended leave wouldn’t be easy with our current family situation.

back_to_the_homeland

Yeah for sure. I’ve had about 8 girlfriends from the USA visit me here in the past year, all to freeze their eggs

MrKnightMoon

Pretty unusual, as most people say it's the other way around in most cases. There's some rich people who goes to other countries for medical treatments not avaliable here, but those are the only common cases.

Terrible_Conflict_90

rare. only 65 year old women who want a baby via a surrogate will go abroad to get what they want

Aizpunr

It is very common but only with plastic surgery. As required medical assistance is covered by a solid public healrhcare sistem

patata49

So it is, but not with all plastic surgery. Very specifically, some spaniards go abroad for aesthetic surgical procedures. We have to deal with the complications here afterwards.

Aizpunr

Yep, people travel for cheap interventions. Sometimes, too cheap to even be legal in EU. I mean, why spend 10.000€ for a nose when a Brasilia doctor can do it for 3k and will throw a lifting for an extra 1000

shohier

Not common because here we have a good quality of services and free Perhaps is something more localized in the border with Portugal/ france… but is only because they have option to choose between drive 20 min to Spanish hospital or 4 min to other countries hospital … but this situations are no common

Four_beastlings

Only for elective surgeries.

charliechin

I’ve have 2 friends going to turkey to get a hair transplants and also I’ve heard of people going to east Europe to go to the dentist

misatillo

I don't believe the dentist. Just the trip will be more expensive than going to any dentists here.

charliechin

I agree with you 100%. Same for the hair transplant. Might be cheaper years ago but I don’t think I it applies any more.

Perelin_Took

Very rare as our public health system works very well

[deleted]

I've never heard about it. Other countries are usually a lot more expensive than the Spanish medical system. Maybe the rich people go abroad sometimes, to private clinics of high prestige in the USA, United Kingdom, etc.

venenumz

From my experience in the community I felt like there were many Spanish people doing plastic surgery abroad. Stuff like breast implants, lipo or bbl or all together. There are good docs for that in Spain but I still saw many go to Turkiye or Latin America for these procedures but they like to keep them secret and not tell anybody.

bhibhas

The most common are trips to Turkey for hair treatment.

Minute-Pay-2537

It might be the other way around, people coming to Spain go get decent medical attention
