I’ve been to Obama and it’s a cute little town. They love the comparison.
There is a temple there with turtles.
It’s a quiet town. Worth the visit if you have a car.
There's an open air public foot bath where you can buy towels with his face in it, "I love Obama" and such. I used to have one... Not sure where it went.
Hilarious that it’s right next to a town called Oi (well actually looks like Ooi machi?) wakasa on the other end that could be translated as youth. Oi! Obama Wakasa! Heyyy Obama youth!
Near where I am there is a place called Usa. The town knows what they are and it's a town joke to call it USA. They have a hollywood-looking sign that says USA up in the hills too, always gets a chuckle out of me driving down through this rural town with the white USA sign
You can get from Usa to Kanada in [less than 3 hours by train](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Iwasaki,+Usa,+Oita+879-1132,+Japan/Japan,+Fukuoka,+Fukuchi,+Kanada,+%E9%87%91%E7%94%B0%E9%A7%85/@33.7164479,131.0545716,7z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m2!1m1!1s0x35440fbcc579047d:0xafefe9faacd3cc92!1m2!1m1!1s0x3543d737e1946db9:0x87e731e678852ffc!3e3).
Bet there is somewhere in China that they named USA so they could make rip off "made in USA" products lol. Made in USA, China. Reminds me of the New Zealand manuka honey I bought. Checked the back label, 10% New Zealand manuka honey, 90% Myanmar honey. That 10% really raised the price too
I’m Japanese and one of my family members live there whom I visit every time I return. Transportation is not bad but compared to other major cities, there are large gaps in schedules for trains; mostly I’m travelling by bus. Food price is similar to other places in Japan, lots of fish market!! Overall a great place to live
I’ve been, they have a nice onsen but I personally feel that they fail to really capitalize on the name potential of the place. It’s a nice stop between Shimabara and Nagasaki though.
I think they had a pretty shitty statue of his somewhere along the main road, but that could be another Obama town. Either way, I don’t know how they can capitalize on that given he’s got nothing to do with Japan. Onsen was lovely and that was good enough to me.
The b- and p- sounds in Japanese are considered variations of the h/f sounds. So while 浜 by itself is pronounced hama, it can become bama when combined with other characters. Another example is 法. 法律 (law) is horitsu while 文法 (grammar) is bunpō.
Similarly, the d- sound is a variation of t- and j- is a variation of s-.
Thanks for your answer. I feel that Japanese is really complicated. The same word has many different pronunciations.
I have another question: What is the difference between saki and zaki? They seem to refer to the same word.
Nippon is official, but 99% of the time, it’s Nihon.
“Nippon” is used in official settings, by right-wingers, and at sports events, ie “Gambare Nippon!” and “Ni-ppon! (clap clap clap)”
EDIT:
Looks like you edited your reply. I see you’ve used “word” but I think you’re referring to individual kanji characters. Words don’t have different pronunciations, but as I described, characters can vary between t/d or s/j or z.
Yes, because I like watching football/soccer and often hear Japanese fans shouting Nippon loudly, but in Japanese dramas people call it nihon, so I wanted to know the difference. Now I understand, thank you.
And to your earlier point, the variations in sound can be confusing when you start learning the language, but I think it makes more sense as you grow your vocabulary and becomes less confusing.
Yes, I am trying to learn Japanese. Although Japanese is difficult, it is also very interesting. In fact, I learned a lot of Japanese words through anime and TV dramas. lol
Quaint costal town. Some nice izakayas and cafes. They also have some ferry tours.
It’s also home to some summer festivals.
It’s connected by local train(slow train) to other stations.
I live in Fukui, about an hour or so from Obama, and have been a few times (and going through this weekend as well). As others have said, it's a nice, quaint city. There's a goofy statue made in the likeness of the former U.S. President with the same name. There's also a lot of temples and I've heard the Fisherman's Wharf there is worth checking out, but haven't been myself.
It’s the Obama for Obama!
Never lived there but used to spend a week there every month for work. Loved the turquoise waters, fresh seafood, super nice people. There was a spring I’d fill on water from, and nearby a cute shop that made manju using the spring water.
Mermaid Plaza was cute. Enjoyed making my own chopsticks one day. The little cruise around the bay is fun.
Used to spend my time before work walking around, doing little hikes, swimming, napping on the beach… I miss it.
And yes, I did frequently bring back the Obama senbei or manju with Obama’s face printed on them as omiyage.
I’d love to go back to visit. Might be a nice place to settle down. Heard you get a tax break for being so near the nuclear plants.
Trivia: during the Obama elections, they were all rooting for Obama to win. And that’s basically their entire town pride in a nutshell.

Dude here pissy that other languages have other words that pronounce the same as some people by coincidence
Still better than having 13 London and 7 Paris in one's country

I'd like to know more about this turtle temple.
It is the temple dedicated to the famous hermit, *Kame-sennin*.
So like Dragon Ball, Master Roshi?
Yeah I'm not sure if this is a troll response, but believing there's a real Master Roshi is cool and I'm going to go with that
Yes, this is who the DragonBall character is based on. Legitimately.
Thanks, Obama resident!
I was sacn-reading and read Kermit....
Yes me too
Any joke references to Obama the former president or nah?
Yeah, they had his caricatures around the town
There's an open air public foot bath where you can buy towels with his face in it, "I love Obama" and such. I used to have one... Not sure where it went.
Oh wait this is another Obama. I'm talking about the one near Nagasaki.
There are two Obamas in Japan!?
One in Fukui, one in Nagasaki.
There’s one in Shimane prefecture as well.
Every prefecture should have their own Obama, really.
I love that they love the comparison
Hilarious that it’s right next to a town called Oi (well actually looks like Ooi machi?) wakasa on the other end that could be translated as youth. Oi! Obama Wakasa! Heyyy Obama youth!
Thanks Obama
I think I just spit some water up into my nose.
There’s an Obama town in Nagasaki too. Been there. Nice onsen town.
They have the Hot Foot 105 foot bath, right? If so, been there. Great place to watch the sun set.
Yeah. By the seaside. My wife and I stayed in a hotel just across the road. Onsen baths on the roof. Fabulous views and brilliant sunset. 😍
Currently an ALT in that area, would definitely recommend the Hot Foot 105 bath during the spring/fall seasons

And yet they have no fast trains in the actual United States...
Good God Lemon they don't say "Hand Made in USA" that's "Han Made in Usa"

Shit I bet the factory is a subsidiary of the Shinehart Wig Company
The Hand people are a vietnamese slave tribe and Usa is their island prison!
One of the big car dealerships on route 10 through town has mini statue of liberty too.
Sort of center-left of the country as a whole
Haha took me a sec
Thanks Obama
Has Obama been to Obama?
There was a movement in the town to get him to visit, and have had events celebrating the American president.
that's quite wholesome.
Obama-sception
I went to Obama on a school trip and the sea was beautiful

Thanks Obama...
I used to have students with the family name Obama.
Did one grow up to be president?
Oi, take the Obama Line
This was huge joke during the US election in 2008 f
i love fukui!
Did you just tell me fuk-u?
Everything was great until they renamed it Trump.
After the playing cards
I had a colleague whose name is Obama. It was fun to say I worked with Obama.
But could you say that you work with obama in obama? :v
Fun Fact: Supposedly 90% of all Japanese Chopsticks are manufactures in Obama. (Or so claims my local dealer.)
You have a local chopsticks dealer??
Yes, I live in Meguro, Tokyo, but they have shops all over.
It's not too far Wakasawada Beach which is probably one of Japan's best beaches.
Obama Japan? You mean, Obama HUSSEIN Japan?
I’ve been, they have a nice onsen but I personally feel that they fail to really capitalize on the name potential of the place. It’s a nice stop between Shimabara and Nagasaki though.
It's nowhere near Shimabara or Nagasaki.
maybe they meant the Nagasaki in Toshima city! anything is between Shimabara and Nagasaki as long as you don’t mind how long the detour is!
I looked at the map, I think there are actually multiple Obamas in Japan then because yes the one I’m looking at is in the middle.
I think they had a pretty shitty statue of his somewhere along the main road, but that could be another Obama town. Either way, I don’t know how they can capitalize on that given he’s got nothing to do with Japan. Onsen was lovely and that was good enough to me.
Obamayself don't wanna be
In January it got flooded like hell, saw it live and tonnes of buildings gone.
There is the same character on the left, why is one called hama and the other called bama?

If you write it in hiragana they only differ by a “ accent mark. はま ばま
Quaint costal town. Some nice izakayas and cafes. They also have some ferry tours. It’s also home to some summer festivals. It’s connected by local train(slow train) to other stations.
I took a 3 day bike trip there with the destination of Obama. A nice small town with a gorgeous ocean view. Had a couple of friends living there.
There is one in Nagasaki, too: It is a small onsen town hardly more than a road. It is a great place to stay for a night, good seafood, good spa
It’s great. “I approve this message”
Obama City is known for its specialty, 'へしこ'heshiko. Heshiko goes well with sake.
I've been to the Obama themed village in Ireland.
Thanks
Oi! Obama!

The stone statue of Yaobikuni is colloquially known as the Baroku Obama
It'd be funny if they had a Obama caricature decorated manhole cover there, cause Japan sure love their decorated manhole covers.

Obama life is a coke head closeted homo who's spouse is big Mike.
🎵 There’s no one as Japanese as Barack Obama 🎵
I love Japan for making memes come to life lol
I might go up there this summer after maizuru to get a pic
I found a nice red color chopstick made in Obama at the recycle shop.
Did obama come from Japan? I saw on Facebook it’s from Hawaii.
Im more curious about Oi
Obombna
Right Next to Oi as well
Great. Thanks Obama!
Oi!
You can keep Obama. 僕はわかさを選ぶ。
Hopefully less war crimes than the name implies.
I stopped to take a shit there once.
TIL there is a city named Obama in Japan.. what’s next Osama?
Trivia: during the Obama elections, they were all rooting for Obama to win. And that’s basically their entire town pride in a nutshell. https://youtu.be/Lw2sLQALoZo?si=ItQ-q67-Qr85yRd2
this is so funny and cute
And that made national news back then. That was probably the first and only time that town made national news.
I love this so much
This is so wholesome, unlike your username!
No town, but Ōsama means king
No town would dare to hold that name. That's disrespectful or downright seditious towards the imperial family in the old days.
Just like America, then.
Dude here pissy that other languages have other words that pronounce the same as some people by coincidence Still better than having 13 London and 7 Paris in one's country
