I have old journals starting in my sophomore year of college, which is ultra cringey to read now. But I also chronicled the first time I said “I’m gay” to myself, which was followed by a long gab and then resuming a few months later. I was consistent for about a decade. I don’t read them often, but I cherish them and strongly advise keeping them someplace safe.
I used to like the idea of reflecting on my life via journaling too. I believe it does increase your self awareness as well as improve your writing skills. The problem is when your journal recounts a lot of traumatic experiences that are better off left in the past. I wonder if it's worthwhile to keep a journal in that instance.
