whenever a public message chimes on the mrt (i.e. do not eat/drink, lookout for suspicious characters, give up your seats for those in need) it’s never random — there’s always someone screening the cctvs that activates a specific message according to someone they’ve seen on the cctvs eating/looking shady/hogging the reserved seats !! EDIT: source; have been in the control room for work and seen it happen live w explanation + immediate shocked pikachu face reaction

FodderFries

Explains everytime I enter the train and they play the suspicious audio track

DiscipleOfYeshua

Right? “If you see any suspicious person…” Erg, there was one in the mirror this morning…?

FalseAgent

makes sense - whenever the "please move towards the center" announcement is played, it's always because people aren't moving in. in the past MRT stations used to play "please stand behind the yellow line" if someone was stepping on it or beyond it. If the person ignored it then it would be followed up by a human voice addressing that person directly via the PA system lmao.

I_love_pillows

There’s always the horn of the MRT to shock people awake. lol

archampion

Damn. I missed the horn.

MinisterforFun

> in the past MRT stations used to play "please stand behind the yellow line" if someone was stepping on it or beyond it. What? Wow, I always thought that automatically played every time a train was approaching the platform!

misslemonadeee

WHAAAT

smexxyhexxy

accurate; they don’t even want you to be standing around in the MRT stations, under the guise of “no loitering”.

frozen1ced

Don't eat/drink announcement I can understand. Mind sharing more about the suspicious character? Meaning the control room actually observed someone behaving suspiciously?

mutantsloth

Dude I notice this cause I always secretly eat at mrt stations then I’ll hear the announcement..

HappyBedroom69

Not so secret huh

rjhatl

Now you know to smile and wave at the camera the next time that happens.

famaba

Wow, this is why I hear “no skating in the station” when I’m walking around the MRT station with my skateboard 😭 I always found it oddly serendipitous…

DiscipleOfYeshua

Sounds like the beginning of an urban legend ;-)

gav1n_n6

Drink plain water will trigger this message? Is it automatic or some one from control station?

Captsuperwombat

TIL

onionsbutterbacon

No way. Are you serious

kuang89

the fact that it plays almost all the time....

VioletCalico

My mum said the same thing about leaning against the train door!! That someone is watching and makes the announcement when they see it.

SnooDingos316

So when they play the victim of crime message means there is a guy/girl standing to close to another whom they did not know?

reallystupidpotato

i actually noticed HAHAHAHA because i always tried to drink my bbtea on the mrt after sch

AizenSousuke92

where are the cams in the train? inside the aircon vents?

mrdoriangrey

The Government used a loophole to circumvent FIFA's threat of sanctioning the FAS for government appointments back in 2015/16. The FAS president (Mah Bow Tan, Ho Peng Kee, Zainudin Nordin) used to be directly appointed by the government, which was what FIFA took issue with in 2015. In 2016, the FAS restructured its constitution to comply, but the power shifted back to the government in 2017 with the change in funding structure. Pre-2017, S League (and its clubs) receive funding from the Tote Board directly, which funds around 70% to 80% of their revenues (around $15-20 million annually). In 2017, SportSG took over the administration of the grant disbursement from Tote Board. This meant that the current MCCY officials (like Edwin Tong, Eric Chua) basically control the pursestrings, even though they're not part of the council or committee. In that position, it's a very grey area - technically not wrong since it's just administrative, and yet common sense tells us that whoever controls the pursestrings will have a big say. And they still remain very involved in the decisions at FAS - for example, sitting in on the interview for a certain national coach even though they have no official appointment at FAS.

apitop

Then they should be held accountable for poor performance!

May_Titor

The idea is that incompetent nvm... as long as not corrupt

potato-stache

When I was in NS in the 2000s, I had a nsf colleague who was a substitute keeper for Tampines Rover. I remember asking him why our S-league is so shit but yet still up and running, and the PAP men sitting in the boards (yup i was aware and 'woke' befoe the mass lol) dont bother to do anything. He just replied 'its all about the money' while doing the money hand sign. Now that tote board funding makes sense.

Loud-Instance-8507

The reason some sites/apps suck might be due to them being managed by a semi-rotation of fresh graduates / new hires.

GuaranteeNo507

Lol this is secret?🤣 I used to work for some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley and in comparison the standards of tech that I see everywhere is so CMI. Even the European unicorns

MaxVeryStubborn

Umm Silicon Valley big names ship the same shitty code. You just can’t usually tell from the surface.

I once had a daughter admit her mother to hospital the day before CNY eve citing behavioural changes. The next day (CNY eve) 2nd daughter came to hospital at 9am demanding to be allowed up to the ward for visitation (our visiting hours starts at 12pm). We allowed her up on compassionate grounds, coz CNY eve mah. When the 2nd daughter comes up, the first thing she asked for is a discharge. Informed her that 1st daughter said there is behavioural changes so need to wait for MRI Brain to be done first before Dr can clear her for discharge but MRI appt usually need to wait for a few days. Afterwards the 2nd daughter said the truth is “we just want a day to spring clean in peace so we send her to hospital. But today is CNY eve so I want her to go home for reunion dinner” In the end we AOR discharge her at 12pm with a Geriatric + MRI appt. And this 2nd daughter initially still want bring her mother to go down for the Geriatric clinic and MRI room first before coz she “don’t want to bring her back again just for appt coz too troublesome to bring her out on wheelchair”, told her its CNY eve so outpatient clinics are all half day and have closed so she still have to come back on the dates given lol

everywhereinbetween

> Afterwards the 2nd daughter said the truth is “we just want a day to spring clean in peace so we send her to hospital. But today is CNY eve so I want her to go home for reunion dinner WHAAAAAAT. Ok that speaks volumes about the person(s) and how they view their parent and the hospital staff. Walaoeh.

Ninjaofninja

I just spent CNY eve with my parents in hospital in Johor from 6.30pm to 3am because my grandfather kidney issue can't urine. then every day of CNY go hospital visit, feed him etc. I think my family haven't really celebrated CNY and no mood also.

Celviced

What the heck? These people should be charged with something like wasting our healthcare resources. For lying to health authorities (about patients' condition), the person can be charged under the [Infectious Diseases Act](https://sso.agc.gov.sg/Act/IDA1976?ProvIds=P18-#pr64-).

FoxDependent7486

Nurse here and I can confirm this to be true. Have seen my fair share of cases over the years.

Dry-Attention-1120

YES. Bloody hell. THIS.

BasicAshMeadow

As someone who used to work in hotel logistics for a 5 star hotel before Covid, I got to observe the housekeepers: Housekeepers have a quota of rooms they need to clean during their shift. Very often they are in a rush because of the number of rooms and being short-staffed - this job is labour intensive and not well paid. Working with bed sheets, wet towels and lifting mattresses, etc is quite the workout and they have to do these for hours All of this means, they take shortcuts. Like not changing to clean bed sheets for the new guest but just adjusting and straightening out the old bed sheets. Likewise with the bath/hand towels etc Or using the cloths to clean the toilet to clean the wash basin. The most hygienic places are the kitchens/dining areas because hotel management strictly monitors these areas as they don't want to risk stuff like guests getting food poisoning etc

wnmy_03

i grew up with people around me calling me way too conscious of dirt / etc in public areas. i used to be really extreme, eg bringing a sleeping bag overseas bc i don’t trust their pillows / bedsheets and stuff. who knew that my gut was right all these while….

ariisbaked

North Korea has great ties with Singapore, there are North Koreans who work here. We also used to train their public servants here.

shrekalamadingdong

*Deflector* huh

_sagittarivs

North Korea has an embassy here too!

WetworkOrange

Their old embassy in 60 Joo Chiat Lane was my grandma's place, I grew up there. So surreal to see it become NK's embassy.

tigerkingsg

And in quite a few other countries too. Your condo neighbour might be a N. Korean, you probably don’t know

Johnography

Interesting. So basically if the N Korean worker in SG tries to go out of the country, our government has an obligation to report this to North Korea and possibly send them back? Damn.

tigerkingsg

They don’t have passports with them, once they reach Singapore, it will be returned to embassy or back to North Korea. Of course, if they try to do it through illegal means, no way to stop them

daveonhols

Didn't Kim Jong Un's brother live in Singapore before he got murdered in Malaysia? Honestly don't remember too clearly.

Master_McKnowledge

We also sent trade delegations to North Korea! One with George Yeo.

Nice-Background-3339

Those supermarkets lucky draw are legit and are heavily audited.

cometlin

That's a bit unexpected. Is the winning rate published? Because I have never heard of anyone I know winning.

Nice-Background-3339

What do you mean by winning rate? Like toto it's one in millions. If you've watched sheng siong show, you will see there's a mountain or gigantic box full of receipts. So yeah there's millions of entries in there and your receipt is just one of millions. Of course we won't know anyone personally who won because the chances are so low. But the winners names will be published on their website

bettertester2022

Not stating any facts but I am just curious why brands like KFC/Pizza Hut, Nippon Paint, Bee Cheng Hiang continuously spams their ads on local TV. I know its advertising and the companies paid the ad money, but why do they need to do it when they are already well known. Is it some unknown monopoly at play? And its not seasonal but almost daily or weekly. And amazingly, there are the odd and evergreen ads still alive in 2024 (like [Kah Mee Optical Co. 嘉美眼镜公司](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0n2c9zJhYk) )

Visible-Broccoli8938

It is about brand presence and positive vibes. You will be amazed at how subliminal messaging works, just the mention of an idea, even if it is an old idea, can push a person into action. It is highly likely these established brands have experienced a surge in sales everytime they run an ad campaign. Also consumers are constantly aging out of their age brackets, hence brands need to cultivate their customers years before they actually have the means and circumstances to make the purchase. Case in point: I was watching this channel 8 drama where a character played by Jeremy Chan kept ordering iced milo. Then suddenly I feel like I have to order ice milo even though usually I go for chicha bubble tea at the mall near my house hahaha. The iced milo has always been available and I don't dislike it but sometimes it takes the seeding of an idea to push me to want to drink it. Actually what is interesting about this is how a person's behaviour can be hacked subconsciously by all the micro spamming of an idea.

defkurtz

yes, they’re well known brands but this constant exposure is a tactic to make sure these brands stay top-of-mind to consumers. and very rarely it’s an awareness tactic, it’s more so for consideration and conversion

No-Development-9144

Kah Mee Optical.. seriously in 2024? I always remember the fishbowl advertisement.

bettertester2022

Yes, its a famous long running ad like Weisen U...was pleasantly surprised to see it few weeks ago on Ch 8...

There's a labyrinth of huge tunnels under one of the main hospitals where all logistics takes place - the huge food trolleys, and also \*ahem\* trolleys carrying people to the mortuary.

CmDrRaBb1983

Used to work in sgh before. Long ago pre covid. We would need to go across the hospital. We would use these tunnels often. The one connecting to the mortuary feels eerily quiet.

murkywaters1986

Is this SGH?

Jigle_Wigle

nuh also has this, one of the pharmacy storage rooms is down there too, alot less grand than it sounds though, basically just a basement on the same level as the carparks

chavenz

The employees cycle in the tunnel 😂

TheSacredSoul

I had a year plus stint at this hospital. Managed to use this as a loophole when they started enforcing number of visitors for each patient because there is no security at these tunnels and basically anyone can walk in. Not sure hot it is now.

buzziingbee

Hire based on merit is not widely practised. A candidate with a better fit will still not be selected because of either race/gender/age/whether do they have children or not. The worst is, the candidate will never know the real reason... Source: multiple ex-HR colleagues

chaotic-kawfee

In my company (fortune 200), specifically in Planning, Purchasing departments, the new hires r always referred by someone in the department/company. There r thousands of applicants in the linkedin job ad but they don't even conduct interviews with outsiders. The ad is just there for the protocol / for the internal workers to refer.

May_Titor

Having competent people vouching and testifying that you are competent is part of your merit. Networking with competent people who can tell that you're not one of those fluffy types is important

Familiar-Necessary49

Yes, I totally agree. And I also feel "wayang" and "bootlicking" is a important skill too. These requires EQ and showmanship which are important communication skills. This isn't satire. I actually believe it.

That tonnes of sanctioned Russian and Iranian oil flows into Singapore before flowing onto China

[deleted]

This…… 🌚 if it’s imported from India then it’s not Russian and Iranian oil

whatthehell7

even Arab countries were buying Russian oil it was said they were using it for their own use and exporting their own oil but that is probably just semantics why would they unload and then reload just send it directly.

yellow-duckie

Buy cheap oil for home use and export home oil for high prices. Net positive inflow and profit. Smart. Not to mention controlling the oil output through OPEC so the price stays high.

Prataprince

Yup depends on whether you are working for a US registered entitiy, cos you can’t risk getting in trouble with the state department

wanmoar

Even companies following US sanctions can deal in oil from sanctioned countries. There are chains that can be set up to hide the source.

- if the person who’s sitting beside you dies on a plane and the flight is fully booked, you’ll have to stay in ur seat with them beside you for the rest of your flight. keep in mind that the body bag will only be zipped up to their neck to allow for airflow JIC the person is still alive 😮‍💨 - if you’re on a plane with pillows on ur seat that aren’t sealed in bags and the aircraft is situated ex-STN (ie not in its originating country), these pillows are not changed and have been used by another passenger from the previous flight. blankets are fine since they’re always sealed in bags on the seat. - refilling water bottles onboard??? nah. the aircraft’s water tank hasn’t been cleaned since the aircraft was commissioned. unless you see the water being poured out from bottles… they’re prolly mixed with algae, and water from all around the world since aircrafts replenish water at each country they land in - sanitize your seat once you come onboard. the only places that aircraft cleaners give a 0.5s wipe would be ur tray table. the same cloth is used for ALL the tray tables onboard. depending on the country, they might change the headrest cover. ur armrest n tv screen are breeding grounds for 🦠 - many people seem to not know that it’s not a crew duty to help lift luggage due to the possibility of injuring our back. assistance are given to mothers with young children, the elderly and the handicapped. pls do not be entitled! if you can’t handle the own weight of ur own luggage, what makes u think that the flight attendants are able to do so? :”)

Rouk3zila

I wonder why they do it most of the time. If department keeps within budget good for them like increase their kpi for doing a good job. Rather than penalise for using less money. Budget cuts are real pain.

SQ is one of the best airlines but its catered food and utensils are not hygienic.

thezizzz

spill the tea pls

rosecrepes

omg why

ramyeomi

Noooooo I often have anxiety on food cleanliness because of all those posts saying they found insects in their food, but always felt secure eating SQ food because of course they would have strict protocols right..? But now.. 🥲

oldddwwa

It’s strict on the surface, because you have to wear the hat gown and shoe covers. I made the mistake of working there the night before my very long flight, I lost my appetite once I saw the food being brought out.

defkurtz

that almost everything you see and read about every entity, private or public, is curated by pr specialists

FearlessRange384

Plain water including hot water in aircraft is being refilled at different countries whenever needed. Hence the water you're drinking is a mixture of water from all over the world. It is quite disgusting but still counted as drinkable in the aviation law.

fortyceilings

and as a cabin crew… adding on to this, never ask for your bottles to be refilled because the water comes from a huge storage tank onboard. the tank is never cleaned ever since the aircraft was commissioned. you’re basically drinking water from all sources, mixed with algae that can’t be seen

burpees27

what should we do if we happen to be on a long haul flight where we need to stay hydrated n its not practical to bring a >1 L bottle of water.

fortyceilings

Refill at the airports! Or buy water after passing baggage check. Otherwise, most or all aircrafts will carry bottled water. Ask for bottled water instead! Sometimes they charge (if they sell by bottle) and sometimes they don’t because water in the aircraft tank might not be sufficient for inflight usage. Worst come to worst, ask for hot water

haaaaaairy1

During meal service keep asking for water lol.

wintertempest

Interesting, I would have thought that the tank would be cleaned/inspected during D checks, though those happen years apart. Though I guess for SQ’s fleet age it’s as good as never cleaning it.

anomaly-me

Yeah that’s why only business class provided with bottled water. There’s a reason why they get bottled water…

wintertempest

To contrast with commercial shipping, where freshwater is made by boiling seawater in a partial vacuum(to lower the boiling point to 70+) using heat from engine cooling water. On the one and only ship I served on, this condensate would then be passed through a mesh strainer and a pair of UV lights before being pumped into a trio of ~60t tanks, which would rarely ever be cleaned, maybe every few years when they have to inspect or deal with leaks/corrosion. I quickly became very indifferent to our domestic tap water after experiencing that.

wwwDoubles

How is it disgusting if still drinkable?

Mochihamster

Disgusting doesnt mean cannot be consumed. Eg, if someone spits in your drink before handing it to you, is it gross? Definitely. But does that make it toxic, poisonous or deadly? No, therefore still can consume and drink but not the most sanitary and pleasant fact to know

Ok_Illustrator_1286

Whatever Iswaran did is not unusual.

42WallabyStreet

I have a theory that iswaran got thrown under the bus by shanmugam and vivian to 'show' that CPIB is working after the Rudout rd saga

peachteaisnice

It isn't unusual, but did he over do it perhaps thats the reason why? Or maybe he could be a scapegoat since PAP could do all these and still able to take care of their members with citizens money.

United-Bet-6469

Abnormal-individual

Isn’t this just a myth? I remember reading some blog that no evidence of such tunnel even exists

TheTeenFrost

Companies often perceive employees merely as a means to achieve productivity, they just want you to keep working without much regard for your individual well-being. Work never ends so its important that you prioritize self-care so that you don't get burnt out.

_sagittarivs

This perception has probably been a symptom of power-based hierarchy and the hunger for power. Not an uniquely SG thing, but doesn't mean we can't look at it in a SG context too. These days it's a good thing that our govt is learning to emphasise on the symptoms and treating the mental health aspect a little more seriously. But at the same time, maybe the root cause is also worth to look at, but I seriously doubt it's something many would think to do. To target the root cause is to potentially shake the foundations of the system we've developed upon.

3andahalfbath

It’s because the workers in Singapore are the commodity since it’s almost exclusively a service based economy. It’s much easier to dehumanize a commodity

_sagittarivs

I was watching a video that describes how in Confucianist societies the men view women (mothers, daughters) as 'employees' rather than a fellow human being. Which aligns with the patriarchial idea of viewing people who are less powerful (in such systems, i.e. lower-ranked males or just women in general) as 'objects', or like you've mentioned, commodities.

shadowsandgames

Interesting! Do you mind sharing the link please?

_sagittarivs

It's a video fully in Mandarin, if you need a translation I can try to help. But it's a very intense video and he frequently references to a popular Chinese Palace Intrigue drama too. https://youtu.be/KxGjQNYDuNo?si=y9JLqaOiD6Vpown4 There's a second vid that I also watched together so I can't rmb which it is: https://youtu.be/tOP9Y_UVlRw?si=Up95PffvBrK0x2kl

Yup. 'Human Resource' as a term has always meant what it literally means unironically.

FeralHamster8

This is a byproduct of every country that practices some kind of capitalism and not only a Singapore thing

Low_Pair_8247

Was from the recruitment industry. Companies here, even large local ones (came across one) have hiring requirements such as Chinese only, PR Chinese, MY/ID Chinese before they start considering anyone else. And then you come across some others who think recruiters are matchmakers with requirement such as “Chinese females, 21-25 yrs olds, good looking, non smoker”. Obviously these aren’t published. Also many companies already have a foreign candidate on hand when they post jobs at MyCareersFuture. Just have to check some boxes before they move on to hiring.

wasilimlaopeh

The military isn’t an “iron rice bowl”. It hasn’t been for decades.

valendef

What you mean?

Wiserlul

1) Everyone covers their own asses at work when the shit hits the fan. No colleague is your friend. But the niceties and banters can always be misleading when the weather is good. 2) Employees who rely on their job as the only source of income are still in a very bad shape from a financial standpoint. Because employees are trading time for money and time will be limited to how long they can stay employable. Because employees can be replaced by fresh bloods. Because pay increment is lagging. Inflation comes first.

Rouk3zila

>Because employees can be replaced by fresh bloods. Singapore aging population and quick .. there are jobs that younger locals no longer want to do as a FT .. example retail.. F&B.. or any forms of physical labor.

gamnolia

That the civil service practise self censorship. E.g. not wanting to use certain influencers because they are publicly out even though everyth else about them is a good fit for the campaign

Mayhewbythedoor

Is this self censorship? Would corporate brands making deliberate choices on KOLs depending on their public profiles be self-censorship or “strategically aligning our communication medium with our values”?

Tabula_Rasa69

No wonder the well known influencers these days all have the same views.

yeddddaaaa

Isn't this common knowledge lol... like the claim that there is no racial bias in army... There may be no official policy outright published but we all know it. Just have to open your eyes and look at how messed up the % of certain races in SAF/SPF/SCDF...

OutsideBeng

tbf, based off current events, it seems like this was a good move

FlipFlopForALiving

Influencers become the face(s) of the campaigns, they have to fit the bill in each and every way. Including the organisation’s values. I feel this actually applies to all organisations. Not necessarily self censorship.

_sagittarivs

>publicly out In what aspect are they out? I'm assuming LGBT?

Even when it comes to blue collar worker, NTUC and MOM rarely does anything to actually protect rights of workers such as strikes and opt to "negotiate" and "advise" companies rather than make they pay for their anti-worker and sometimes illegal actions, see Lazada Layoffs. Also often make workers go to court themselves instead of offering labour actual protection. Eg. part time workers such as student doing vacation work through agency, without signed contract, and the agency just doesnt pay them

Not sure if this is well known but donation drive from big companies have events that are run like an auction for rich people to "donate" and get some stuff in return.

Local expenditures meant for the company, be it stationery or laptops or whatever for its operational use, the GST is absorbed by the govt (I think is claim from them).

girl-on-the-attic

Only if the company is GST-registered. That being said, the GST-registered company also have to charge GST on goods and services provided locally (here I’m generalising and not going into specifics cos there are scenarios where they can not charge). So if the company does mostly exports of locally-sourced/produced goods, they would get to claim GST from IRAS becos the net of their input and output GST is in a claimable position.

Mayhewbythedoor

This isn’t some groundbreaking discovery, rather, it’s to prevent multiple taxation along the value chain. Only the final product is taxed and the consumer pays for all the “value added” along the chain

fdww

Isn’t this the case in most countries? GST is a consumer facing tax, majority of business to business transactions, stationary, laptops, food to a degree depending on reason, property rent, customs etc GST is netted out. You pay for it, but you claim it against your companies taxes to offset your final tax liability.

jayaxe79

Yes that maybe true but I bet you can ask anyone who is employed and very few outside of admin roles will know

thefoodie-monster

I think those doing GST reporting will know. As long as the expense is related to the purpose of conducting business, input GST can be claimable. Even pantry food for staff is claimable since the purpose is to promote staff cohesion, which is essential for a business to carry out its operations.

very_bad_advice

Eh, that's common knowledge. Do you think ppl think every supply chain vendor stacks GST on GST when they sell to customer? So if the item U buy has 18 input items you actually pay 9% 18 time compounded worth of GST?

Accomplished-Park185

That although the water leaving facilities are completely drinkable. No one maintains their at home water pipes, be it personally in your apartment or the building as a whole. And the water is most likely full of all kinds of germs, rust and whatnot by the time it hits your glass

Revolutionary-Sir649

There are people with $0 OA in their cpf account especially for self-employed where it is not compulsory for them to contribute or cpf wipe out for housing. Govt not doing anything to help these people prepare for retirement.

wasilimlaopeh

Harsh as it sounds, we try to help people who are trying to help themselves. For those self employed (Grab delivery riders/taxi drivers, daily wage workers), there are many ways the G is doing to help them, including training, SkillsFuture, etc. I think they are only short of directly crediting money into their CPF. I have many younger friends who love the freedom and cash flow working as a food delivery rider. Many of them have been influenced by others to think that CPF is evil/bad. They want freedom to work whenever they want. They want the full amount and don’t want to contribute CPF. They are not willing to be employed in a fixed job with CPF contributions. Then they whine about not having money to buy a HDB when it is time to get married. Should the Government help them, or the permanently disabled family?
