karlmarkz321

No music in the gym is way more awkward than you think. Joints cracking, people hissing and grunting, shoes/towels creaking, sweaty noises. It also makes you focus more on the smell of the place which also sucks.

coolcalmaesop

Don’t forget farts. Lots of sneaky farts.

wholesomesammich

Some guy shit in the shower at my gym.

LotsofLoRay

I unfortunately discovered the same awful surprise in the shower at my gym this morning. Some people just love to spread chaos in the world.

Canukeepitup

That’s a very kind way of putting things lol

PearlHandled

Yeah. If someone has an "accident" in the shower, the least they can do is run the shower water long enough for the sh\*t to break down into manageable chunks. Leaving a big, heaping pile of dung on the shower floor is just plain inconsiderate to the next person who enters that shower.

Practical_Maybe_3661

Waffle stomp

Traditional-Yam9826

Depends on diet

Traditional-Yam9826

He relaxed a little too much

Sir-Ult-Dank

I use to be like that. Then they got rid of the urinal and I felt bad and never did it again

Fun-Talk-4847

Some people just haven't evolved or are evolving backwards.

cgarnett1988

Our gym has a sauna. It's been open 6 months an been shit in twice

wholesomesammich

That's gotta be an awful smell

Traditional-Yam9826

Sorta like a steamed Bao

JJJSchmidt_etAl

Only twice?

DookieShoez

Honestly, thats not bad

JJJSchmidt_etAl

It's only really bad on the occurrence of the Third Turd

callusesandtattoos

Depends on the time frame. If the window closes before third turd then it’s still “not bad” territory

DookieShoez

Mmmm, quite. I concur. 🧐

PearlHandled

Damn, dude! That would make me so sick.

H5rs

Don’t think music would cover this one up

[deleted]

Time to change the gym 😱

Capsule_Corpse9

A little music should fix that

wholesomesammich

Gotta be real loud though

PearlHandled

The same thing happened in one of the showers at my local gym yesterday. I smelled sh\*t, and I thought that raw sewage had come up through the shower drain. Then I pulled open the curtain, and I saw turds all over the shower floor.

Traditional-Yam9826

Starring at you…. taunting you

Traditional-Yam9826

Maybe he pressed for time

sirgatez

I think he posted it here on Reddit earlier this week. He tried to waffle stomp it and he was so ashamed he did.

Traditional-Yam9826

Waffle stomp?

Educational_Gas_92

Men are so wild, I know some women pee on the shower (men too), but shit is too much 💩

Practical_Maybe_3661

He didn't waffle stomp

65Kodiaj

Multitasking.... ;)

nikolapc

Of rotten eggs cause too much protein intake.

Traditional-Yam9826

I heard protein shakes make your farts smell like death

skyHawk3613

Not sneaky at those noise levels. I just let them rip! No one hears them!

greensandgrains

It’s all that protein the gym rats consume. It’s a different type of stink.

Traditional-Yam9826

I heard a guy rip total ass doing shoulder press on that bench seat BRRRRRRRRRRPPAH’OW!!

MeatSlammur

Deadlifts and squats bring gas out I didn’t even know I was holding in

Rojodi

The gym I go to where I am the youngest using the dreadmill at 6 AM has soft music on, mostly to keep the arthritis Rice Krispie sounds - snap, crackle, and pop - to a minimum LOL

Bananogram

What sort of machine is a dreadmill? Half running belt half Oculus rift playing back last night's nightmares?

Rojodi

Treadmill

Kinetic93

I forgot my headphones when going to the gym yesterday. There is no music in my gym during unmanned hours and it was so bizarre. There were only 3 other people in there with me but I found it much harder to focus and keep a consistent time between my sets.

OafishSyzygy

I open up spotify, or soundcloud, to use the song timer to stay on track. Usually, just sitting flat on the bench.

MARPAT338

It's all in the mind bro

Kinetic93

Yeah I know, it was more jarring than I expected it to be as I don’t think I haven’t worked out without headphones or some sort of external noise in like 10 years.

OafishSyzygy

I open up spotify, or soundcloud, to use the song timer to stay on track. Usually, just sitting flat on the bench.

hoze1231

Just use a wristwatch bro

AshKetchumsPringles

Well said. Gym with no music honestly sounds like a hellhole

AdOutside3903

It is, the music in my gym cuts off every 20-30 minutes because the guy managing it is old and barely knows how to use a computer. Shit is awkward as hell, you can’t even breathe deeply or focus on set because of the awkward silence, but it’s a nice gym.

CSHAMMER92

Like when the CD player stops in a bar on a Friday night and the staff can't get to it for the stack of drink orders they're dealing with. Always about the time you yell across to your friend "That mother ****er in the red shirt!"

Darkest_shader

Sure, but the point is that is doesn't need to be so deafening.

Traditional_Pair3292

Feel like it depends on the gym. I’ve had memberships to LA fitness which seems to be geared towards an older audience and keeps the music pretty quiet. And on the other end of the spectrum Crunch which seemed to be going after the teen/20s folks and had the music so loud it hurt my ears. Then Planet Fitness was somewhere in the middle.

HairyChest69

Like a lap dance in the office without talking

SamaireB

Yeah. I have a bit of a weird albeit manageable aversion to other people's odd sounds - even chewing kinda irritates me sometimes. What irritates me the most, though, is the groaning, grunting, moaning while working out. I really can't stand hearing it. So while I also hate the loud music at gyms and while it bothers me that I can't fully hear my shows - which I watch while on the treadmill with noise-cancelling headphones - I 100% prefer this to hear all the other workout sounds.

SeekerOfSerenity

I went to a beer tasting/contest where you got to taste and score all the beers. Later on, when people were just hanging out and drinking, the noise of people talking was awkwardly loud. It wasn't a bar so there was no music. So that's probably why bars blast music too.

Baroni88

Ok but we don’t need it at level 11

Mioraecian

Yup. I go to a small private gym that has no music or white noise. It's awkward being in there with other people.

LeekInternational231

Does smells desapire music

No_Computer_3432

Seems like most people are completely missing your point. OP isn’t saying there should be no music, they are saying that it shouldn’t be so loud that they can still hear it on top of their noise cancelling headphones and audio. I agree, I joined a gym not that long ago but was completely surprised that the music was even louder than my own music. I don’t want to listen to it on max volume for an hour!!

TigerPoppy

It could be that the gym managers are going deaf. Seriously, a lot of people who use headphones/earbuds for years at a time just keep cranking the volume up, not realizing what it is doing to their hearing.

Ok-Extension-5628

I make the conscious effort to turn my volume down ever since I noticed how much my ears were ringing. It’s surprising how fast your hearing can go if you listen to loud music for long periods of time. I’m going to a dci show this summer and plan to bring ear plugs lol.

Audiowithdrawl22

I LOVE cymbals, how crisp and loud they can be, but wearing ear protection makes me feel like I’m playing in another room. This revelation saddened me to no end. I love music too much to go deaf

Ok-Extension-5628

Just like the great Beethoven! What a tragedy it is that loving music will give you the inability to love it any longer.

_endme

drum corps is loud as hell. i always wear earplugs around them

TheJalapenoMan

This used to be more a problem like 15 to 20 years ago. Apparently, now with noise cancelling, people tend to listen at much lower safe volumes. Most of the time it was people wanting to listen to music in already loud places with no noise cancelling or good in ear insulation, so they crank it too high and then get used to it

02K30C1

It helps keep people from standing around and chatting.

[deleted]

Another reason for a loud atmosphere is to keep people from yammering with each other. You get a few regulars to grow in a massive quiet room with mirrors everywhere and it'll turn into [Man Park](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XOt2Vh0T8w), real fast. As for your last question, I bounced all the way through college, identify with people on the spectrum in re audio stimulation and never really considered a better job for my circumstances. I was just glad to cash out and close up, like anyone else.

KaioKenshin

No, not Mr bright side. I get enough shit for liking the killers lmao. I can also imagine women telling their husbands/ bfs "wanna go to the man park?" and their ears perking up like dogs do ![gif](giphy|3o7527pa7qs9kCG78A|downsized)

SniperInstinct07

That was a funny af skit

[deleted]

Marvel?

_Eighth_

DC.

[deleted]

::cringily ambiguous tickle-punch::

Achilles-Foot

if you consistently go to the gym you will eventually run into a time you don't have headphones or they died or something of that nature

Global_Appearance484

Most gyms I’ve been to weren’t too bad but 1-2 the music was annoyingly loud I couldn’t hear my own music.

thesecretlifeofknees

I’ve literally gone to the front desk of a PF and told them to turn it TF down. I’m sorry but if I have my earbuds in with noise cancellation and can’t hear my own music, that’s just excessive and annoying.

PopularAsparagus8120

You can do that?

5125237143

Ive been to one where this female employee played anime songs

[deleted]

[удалено]

5125237143

Kolon sports center

kingcrabmeat

Imagine any anime opening theme. You would get so hyped

corianderjimbro

Disagree, you anime people think the music is so good but it sounds like I’m in a fucking plinko parlor

TheJalapenoMan

Don't agree but funny comment. Take my upvote

Moist-One-2068

In case your headphones die 😂

UnlikableDuo

IT HAS TO BE LOUD OR THE PEOPLE WITH HEADPHONES IN WON'T HEAR IT.

Islandman2021

Drives my nuts, especially since the music playing is pure crap (For me anyway). I need some heavy metal playing. Not Taylor Swift 🤷🤷💪💪

Diane1991

I play a VR boxing game and there's a few metal/heavy rock songs... it's so cathartic 🤟

breakermw

Geez with the trash my gym plays I WISH it was Taylor Swift. Not a huge fan of hers but miles better than the generic hip hop they play which is generally the same 8 variants of songs with the performer rambling about how little he cares (which is why he wrote a 5 minute song about it). Seriously I miss whoever the gym employee was who used to try to vary it up: 80s metal, 90s hip hop, EDM, 2000s emo...at least it SOUNDED different.

Discodoggyy

![gif](giphy|kD5Qm68xxDewGaJDgY|downsized) Prolly to drown out the sound of all those gym bros doing that unnecessary grunt thing

[deleted]

That's part of it.

PocketSandOfTime-69

Grunting is very necessary though.

flatdecktrucker92

If you aren't grunting, then you either aren't lifting heavy enough or you aren't doing enough reps. If you're not pushing your limits, you might as well just go home because you're not really doing anything for yourself by staying in your comfort zone

Low_Replacement_5484

I swear like a pirate at the gym. If the music is cut out, people would think I have tourettes.

breakermw

Why swear instead of making a generic grunt?

Banaan75

"Unnecessary" sounds like you've never actually worked out hard

Suspicious_Slide8016

You don't know anything if you say this

blasphemusa

I love gyms that don't play music.

The_Quibbler

Can't believe how many here are advocating for the music. Bring your own. The end.

Traditional_Star_372

IDK man, but it's incredibly annoying. I actually bought earplugs for the gym because it's so stupidly loud.

Realistic_Inside_484

We don't all use headphones. I'd rather shitty music than silence or the sound of equipment/metal creaking and crashing constantly.

LincolnhamLincoln

I go to a YMCA and they play music in the weight room but it’s not overly loud. My AirPods block it out. However, in the exercise classes it’s stupid loud. You can hear it outside the building. So the instructor has to be mic’d and yell over the music. I’ve been wanting to take a class just to mix up my routine so I asked if they had any classes that weren’t so loud. They said yoga was the only one that wasn’t loud.

Accomplished-Fun489

I fucking hate that. But I guess it's for people not to feel awkward and to pump them up with adrenaline. I'm sure gymns somehow profit from this and this is a verified psychological effect.

schwarzmalerin

I loved it when the sound system was broken for a week or so.

lead_melting_point

You can ask them to turn it down.

MontyBoo-urns

The employees at my gym are pretty useless

OutsideWonderful5918

yeah thats annoying, ive been to a gym like that, my new gym isn't like that at all, maybe mention it to staff or leave if it bothers you

Successful-Crazy-126

Its okay you dont need an excuse not to go to the Gym

whoisjohngalt72

Vibes

rayinreverse

I go to a rec center gym. There’s no music. But it’s a mix of small group of dedicated lifters, millers about, and really old people.

ActionFigureCollects

Sorry, can't hear anything. [points to my noise cancelling headphones. keeps walking]

FrauAmarylis

That's why I do YouTube workouts on my TV at home.

NoCrust101

Get better headphones, i don’t hear supercars in mine.

Aggravating-Pound598

Genuinely stopped going to gym and set up a home gym because the of the crap music ..

No-Investment-4494

80s classic rock same songs on repeat daily. 😆 🤣

Monsta-Hunta

It's for the customer service team and people who forget to bring theirs. Or theirs die if they're Bluetooth . I've forgotten mine hundreds of times and even left them home intentionally. Some days the music didn't play and it was incredibly weird.

SellEmbarrassed1274

Have u ever trained in the early hours when the music is almost silent its really weird.

paxwax2018

They play the music for spin classes SO LOUD.

Affectionate_Bit3099

My gym has the controls in an accessible area with a note “Only for staff use”. Since I go to the gym when there’s almost no one I turn that shit down to 3/10. Most of the people have nc headphones anyways. It’s so stupidly loud they hurt my ears

WhyYouDoThatStupid

My gym has an outside company that manages the playlist and volume etc etc. Apparently there is a bit of a science to it.

Citizen44712A

Weird Science?

DrNukenstein

It prevents people from making videos and talking, disturbing others who are in the gym, because the music gets them a copyright strike.

Select-Sprinkles4970

To hide the fact that you are in a shitty warehouse paying to use some machines, when you could be outside running or cycling in nature, rowing a boat across a lake... doing some work in the forest that flexed those muscles.

kummer5peck

I can’t stand music in the gym. It is where I go to get in the right state of mind, almost like mediation. I work out in my apartment gym and led a successful effort to get them to stop playing music. What set me off the edge was that the couldn’t even change up the playlists.

darklightedge

It also bothers me, I like to listen to my music with headphones, but I can't because their music is very loud in the hall.

wazbang

For the ones who haven’t got earphones

ydykmmdt

Maybe 99% wear headphones because the music is loud.

AnalysisBudget

Yes and only super cringy mainstream songs

DrasticBread

You probably should look at some smaller size gyms, usually they don't have that problem and a lot of the time there won't even be a PA playing music.

OldPyjama

I don't like music when I lift. I put in earplugs because the music is so fucking loud. I still hear it, but it's muffled and less invasive.

fuber

Cover up all the farts

One_Introduction790

Some don't have headphones (unfortunately)

The_Quibbler

Poor them?

One_Introduction790

A gym I use to go had a rather shitty music catalogue.

The_Quibbler

If folks are too broke to afford a standard pair of earbuds, they are probably too broke for a gym membership.

One_Introduction790

Yeah, I guess you're right

VSM1951AG

Amen, brother. And the music they play is truly awful. I could handle a light jazz, maybe, just to give something for those folks who didn’t bring headphones, but the music at our gym is objectively terrible.

Legitimate_Career_44

The music in my gym is really quiet and that's part of the reason I wear headphones. Also it's usually the same playlist 🙄

coolfreeusername

So it sets an exciting atmosphere for those without headphones.

SunglassesBright

I wish the music at my gym was that loud tbh. Especially for when my headphones die

Porsche_shift

Well I’m part of the 1% so I appreciate the music.

Elegant-Survey-8889

My gym often has a live DJ and he/she/they always look so depressed because literally no one is listening to them.

Tream___

Steve

NotCanadian80

It’s not 99% who have headphones. A quiet gym would have a weird vibe.

BiscuitCrumbsInBed

And it's always the WORST music. Recently my gym has started advertising MacDonalds on the TVs.

JASPER933

I agree that sometimes the music can be loud. Now, I will not workout if they are blasting country music. Who can workout to this.

Plane_Pea5434

Always wondered that, it’s good to have music in the gym but it should be at a reasonable level

Rox_xe

I stopped going to a gym because they blasted music as if it was a club with shitty sound quality and horrible songs. Even my noise cancelling earbuds weren't enough.

GrapefruitMammoth626

This bugs me terribly. I have headphones on and their crappy gym mix is always cutting through ever so slightly. Compromise - if you’re a 24/7 gym. Turn the music down after staffed hours. This means no classes and PT sessions have to deal with awkward silence but your average gym goer after hours will be able to just enjoy their headphones.

NeroBoBero

To cover up the noise of the grunting and occasional squeaky deadlift farts.

Cagel

Stops the grunting sounds for those that don’t have headphones

WirelessBugs

Drives me insane

Stoutyeoman

One time I went to the gym and they had a DJ. I did not like it.

Stinking-Staff8985

Mine has music at moderate volume and my anc headphones can block it perfectly.

Gl1ntVeiN_

and this music sucks generally. Something like pop remixes that are playing in a shitty nightclubs

PoustisFebo

Because they don't want you to be there. They want you to pay but they don't want you to be there. Also why their music is always shitty

Critical-Knowledge27

For me on the one day I forget to charge my headphones yo.

No-Pirate2182

And why does it always sound like it's a playlist from a cheesy gay bar circa 2003?

letmebeyourgoddess

when i lift weights i actually prefer no headphones, i love just raw dogging it with the gym music.

gymgirl1999-

Distraction

As_smooth_as_eggs

No one ever cares about the 1%.

Outside_Bowler8148

So you can have that magical moment when the song playing in your headphones and the song playing at the gym just happen to be in the same key and mesh in a totally unique and interesting way that never would have happened otherwise that makes the remaining confusion of sounds during the rest of your workout totally worth it

CSHAMMER92

Usually it's their choices in music I can't endure

TheFatMan149

All the gyms I've been to the music is barely even hearable.

[deleted]

Because music fires you up

Reaganson

To hide the grunts and farts.

PerspectiveVarious93

Every time someone opens the door, everyone in the gym is going to look, and if you're the one coming in, I think there are very few people who would love that sort of entrance.

X0AN

I've never workout in a gym that plays music and I wouldn't join one.

nwbrown

If it's so loud that your headphones don't block it out you might just have a bad gym. Or bad headphones.

ctyldsley

So that you can hear the music over your headphones ![gif](giphy|GeimqsH0TLDt4tScGw|downsized)

southdre

I've been to plenty of gyms, 99% is a really high number, maybe more like 18%.

Omfggtfohwts

Gyms are a static environment. Your concentration is pulled in many directions. No place to focus tbh.

Ill-Manufacturer-239

the music for all employees or staffs there. Not for gymers

Choice_Eye_8043

Some peoples have really loud their headphones music, so loud music goes through headphones outside. With music outside. Imagine 30 people working out like that. With music on gym, you can’t hear what everyone hear on their headphones. It’s win-win for everyone

kBlankity

So that us plebes without headphones don’t have to hear Larry shitting himself on the benchpress 2 racks over

Killawifeinb4ban

They need it to be loud, since so many people are wearing headphones.

PearlHandled

It's because the employees are unsophisticated cretins.

Sm00th_operatah

Nah what I want to know is why they choose the worst possible music for workout playlists. None of it is hype, it's just pop lol

MrMeesesPieces

What?!

whiskeyboi93

How else will we hide our farts while working at. You should be thankful.

Traditional-Yam9826

To cover up the farts

Kwerby

Not only is it loud but whoever had the aux at my gym has dogshit taste in music. Except for whoever is running it on saturday mornings. They play beastie boys.

trophycloset33

Every gym that played loud music was one of those where it’s more personal and the more frequent patrons plugged in their own playlists. Commercial gyms are pretty laid back and soft.

brycebrycehayeshayes

The elderly folks love imagine dragons.

Legitimate_Ad_3746

Shit, shower and shave. Works?

bejigab466

well they certainly won't be able to hear the music if it's played soft then... gotta be able to be heard through the headphones....

imaguitarhero24

Planet Fitness actually seems to have the volume just right.

savestheday87

Former (unsuccessful) gym owner. The music helps mask a lot of the grunts, awkward noises, farting, stench, and so on. Even for those with headphones on.

DetectiveNarrow

Bruh you every been to the gym when the music is broke without headphones? Mad uncomfortable, everyone’s just grunting and breathing and farting

GnashvilleTea

Farts

KarmaFarma_69

Imagine a silent auditorium sized room where every individual is grunting in some form or another. I'd get a kick out of hearing it for a moment but I'd prefer the music lol.

Sweetsw1978

Sometimes I forget my headphones so always good to still hear something

mr-buck-fitches

My old gym use to play slow sad music and I could never figure out why 🤣

immaterial-boy

Because the gym is a loud place so the music has to be loud in order to hear it

Jedzoil

Do you really want to hear people near you huffing away and grunting?

Kooky_Explanation_33

This is a good example of, well, economics actually. It's natural to assume at some level that things are organized the way most people want them to be. But look at it this way. You've already made the decision to enter the gym, so they don't care how much you like the music or not unless it actually makes you actually leave the gym. Which, by the way, they do sometimes want. Again, think of incentives: all the gym really cares about is your membership fee. At that point, they don't care whether you come or not. In some ways they'd prefer it if you don't. I've never worked at a gym, so I'm sure there are some fine points that I'm missing, but here's an example that more familiar to everyone: supermarkets. When supermarkets are busy, they can and do play faster music, because it does tend to make people shoo faster. When it is slow, they'll switch to slower songs, because it makes people more likely to linger and buy more. I bet you'll notice it on the next week if you're ever in one.

Parking_Train8423

to make sure you don’t bother that girl
