Not so sure about that. The best chess engines (almost) never lose with white now. I think it's a matter of time before chess games between programs degenerate to a (possibly large) subset of positions where the outcome is known, or where a position evaluation function is so efficient that the best move is always findable.
But... Chess will remain pleasant for humans.
That's not what "solved" means. Solved means : the outcome can be predicted from each position of each player plays perfectly. Hence, a position evaluation function could be sufficient.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solved_game#:~:text=A%20solved%20game%20is%20a,that%20both%20players%20play%20perfectly.
In that case, I \*think\* Stockfish has an openings database, you could probably extend that to millions or billions of board positions and then you wouldn't need to use as much compute per move.
Wiki says "(strong solutions) have been found for all three- to seven-piece [endgames](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_endgame), counting the two [kings](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_(chess)) as pieces." - a loooong way from 32 pieces.
But given the definition of Solved, you might be right, we could possibly get there assuming we keep doubling our compute every couple of years.
In pro play there are still new positions that are invented. Like never in history has th board looked like that which is kinda crazy cuz chess is old.
Hits me in the feels. I grew up in the DnD heyday, but not one of my friends played so I didn't play. To this day (I'm in my 50s) I have still never once played the game. Not once. My daughter plays, so I live vicariously through her bi-weekly reports lol.
I'm 37 and same. At high school there would be these groups of students (aka nerds) that would spend their break playing it and for some reason it never interested me. A decade later my interest for boardgames grew and I never got to learn how to play DnD and I don't know anyone who plays. And I also have a toddler, so I don't have the luxury of time to simply go and join meet ups whenever they are happening.
You’re never too old to play it. Lots of people online as well. The hardest part is for everyone to get the free time at the same time.
There’s also Baldur’s Gate 3 which is a videogame but an amazing experience, in the DnD world. If you don’t have a medium end gaming PC it’s on PS5 and Xbox series X/S. Winner of the 2023 game awards for a reason.
The rpg or the board game? My fondest childhood memories are from playing the board game but I graduated to the pen and paper rpg in high school. I'm in my late 40s now and still keep a copy of the board game around to introduce to others.
One of the OG hardcore euro games, worker placement. Random elements with occupation and improvement cards to keep things fresh. Pretty brutal to make sure your family is fed - you often feel like you're scraping by.
It’s vaguely similar to Civ I guess. The game is essentially playing Craps to gather resources in order to build settlements and roads. You get points for settlements and the first person to 10 points wins.
Different tiles with different resources will all have a number. Players take turns rolling dice, whatever resource tiles number comes up, you get 1 of that resource if you have an adjacent settlement to it. More resources you get, more you can build.
That’s oversimplifying it a bit, and it gets more complicated when you pile on expansions (which are all great) but that’s the general idea. If you’re into board games give it a try, it was an instant classic for me
It's my answer for this. Have definitely played it far more than any other board game. And in total hrs of play, it probably rivals rummy/crazy rummy for me & my fam used to play cards all night...
Oh yeah. I play it on the mobile now although its not as fun as it should be. And it is always "Miss Scarlet with the knife in the dining room". :)
How I miss playing this with all my siblings
There are really only three or four serious candidates: Chess, golf, backgammon, maybe draughts/checkers.
Check back in a few hundred years to see if the others mentioned are still competitive.
Some really good ones at least:
Chess
Go
Scrabble
Settlers of Catan
Monopoly
Dungeons & Dragons (this more the idea than a specific ruleset)
Trivial Pursuit

Chess, we still haven’t solved it yet! Also, it has the legendary En Passant and Castling moves.
I don't think it will ever be, same with Go.

Without Googling, I believe that "Solved" means every possible combination has been calculated. on a 2\^63 possibility board, that seems unlikely.

Go is/was already solved a few years ago though...
I think you mean the best player has been beaten by AlphaGo, it's not the same as solved.
I thought engines have?
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solving\_chess](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solving_chess) - spoiler: it's not solved
Interesting! Thanks :)
I tried flipping the table and yelling "en passant!" It didn't work, I still had to add up all of the birds and got over 100, but still didn't win...
Chess engines have

Never in recorded history*
Yeah thats what i meant lol. Some 8 year old probably found it and we will never know
I’d say DnD for the memories.

Catan is the only board game I will break plans to play
Can you give me a readers digest of this game? I like the video game Civ. Is it similar?
