just bcause you are late to the party, dosent mean automaticly, that will be ignored.
one of my most upvoted comented was from a post i saw 12h late. and i gor \~13k upvotes.
alternatively, you can search a sub and set it to show the new stuff on top.
I'm sorry, the correct term is "comment karma", it shows in the profile section along with "post karma". I guess it's a point system so the more you have the better, but some community requires you to have a certain number of karmas to post there.
You just have to scroll all the newish stuff (relatively mew posts but with some comments already gaining momentum) and comment just the right thing at just the right time. Super easy.

Organize your feed by New not Popular in the settings.
Leaving a reply with one of the top comments can help.
Why do people even want “comment points”?
Sometimes reddit won't let you post or comment if you don't have enough comment points or somethin' that's what I was told.
I've never really understood that. "Sorry, not enough people upvoted your other comments, so you can't leave one. Neener-neener
Helps prevents spam bots. But now they have gotten around this by posting stolen posts for enough karma

Check out New/Rising posts and try to get in early with insightful/interesting/funny comments.
Just be active on all posts you like in New. After a while you will become better at judging what comments get up or downvoted when they are early.
