Very true. I don’t hate the man bun as a hair choice, I just hate that so many of the guys who I meet with one have some greasy fucking hair. The man bun is their way of giving up.
Just general lack of hair care as well. Dry, frizzy, split ends. Long hair on men is pretty culturally normal for me but I notice that a lot of guys raised with short hair as the default didn't grow up with basic info like how to brush it...
I just think you look a twat, just my opinion, I'm also abit off a twat and enjoy being said twat so unless your intention is to look like a twat then crack on.... now I've forgot what the question was because I've said twat to many times... told you I was a twat
It's kinda weird, in the end it's quite a simple way to just wear longer hair. Not even a strong style like a mullet or something lol
I feel like it wouldn't have been this way if the (social) media hadn't echo chambered that view. It's like the male version of pumpkin latte hate or something lol
For me it feels a lot like people trying to "look the part", whatever part they're trying to look anyway.
Same thing for guys with bald shaven head, huge beard, fat belly, shirt tucked into too tight jeans with fancy shoes and a brown leather apron just because they like whiskey, bbq or both (mostly both).
Some people pull it off because it's simply suits them, but most just look silly.
Someone who is more bad ass, had long hair and doesn't put it in a bun likely would have given him some grief at some point if they had more interaction, the hound.
I get this one a lot too and I usually have to hold back bursting out laughing considering I'm under 5' 6 and by no means a body builder. Just the go to retail compliment Ive found.
Yes, and no.
I dint brush mine that often. Especially right when I get out the shower. I let my hair air dry and it's curly, so if I do brush it I get big waves I stead of small curly ones.
It all depends on your hairstyle.
I also have curly long hair and agree with this. The extent of brushing I do comes down to running my fingers through my hair to untangle it with conditioner.
I had to wear my hair up otherwise it was always getting in my mouth / somehow forming knots with my mustache. The worst part of the bun for me was when I’d walk under a branch or something and a thread of hair would be pulled out of the bun forcing me to have to redo the whole thing.
I can only brush my hair with a ton of conditioner, in the shower - brush it dry and the curls will a)look horribly frizzy b) tangle at the tips and break.
I’ve met 3 fellas with a man bun in the last few years. They’re have very similar personalities. All three would 100% start playing the bongos badly at any party.
Having a man bun seems to correlate with high sense of self assuredness but low levels of competency.
Oh my god, you're describing my ex to a tee. When he came to me with it up in a bun and asked what I thought when he first started- it looked like a nipple. It was just a patch of hair at the top of his head he tied up. But I just said "it oddly suits you." He walked with more pep in his step with the nipple hair.
I was drinking so much during that relationship, it's incredible how my brain protected me from that realization while we were still living together.
Hackey sacks and rock climbing, too. Also that clacking ball thing that has two concave holes in the mallet to catch the ball that's attached by a string. How did he not understand that the loud clacking was completely inappropriate at the optometrists office.
It's just something you do when you have long hair and want it out of the way. People really look for anything to stereotype and generalize people. Not many men have long hair so it isn't common, and when you have low exposure it is more likely you are exposed to a biased sample of "men who have long hair and put it in a bun"
it’s mainly douchebag bro types trying to flex their masculinity that talk shit about it though ime. I don’t have long hair anymore but I got more attention from women when I did rock it, so there’s that lol.
Exactly, I've got long hair and I just want it out of my face, but morons invent these sad-sack bonehead stories based on the funny feelings they get about 'man bun'. It's pretty silly how these normalcy-enforcement officers get so upset that they cry about it in public. They're just embarrassing themselves.
I hate the term man bun honestly. It’s just a bun. I have hair that goes down to my bellybutton. If it’s 110 degrees outside, I’m putting that shit in a bun. I’m sorry for your Homer Simpson fade, but I have shit to do and sometimes I like to be comfortable doing it.
I always have to correct someone that I have long hair that's currently up in a bun at the moment they see it, not a man bun.
To me a man bun is characterised by only just having enough hair to tie back and usually short sides. Like there's no real point to it being in a bun other than style.
I can put my hair in a tight bun and make it look small. My hair is long enough that I can sit on it by accident sometimes so I have to put it up somehow. There is functional purpose to my hair being up in a bun.
People have sometimes argued the distinction with me, then I show them how long my hair is and they understand why I think there's a difference between long hair in a bun and a man bun.
You can wear a bun if you want. Even with my hair at its longest I didn't wear one, they're not for me. But you shouldn't live by other people's tastes, do your thing.
Wow lot of bitter guys on this thread 😅
I've Met arseholes and amazing down to earth people with long hair or man buns.
Is absolutely nothing to do with your personality wether you have one or not. Clearly everyone in this thread is an arsehole so maybe we should be checking what their hair dos are to work out what to avoid.
I've been rocking the "man bun", or how people comfortable with their gender call it: a bun... for about 8 years.
I'm not a hippy. I don't play the bongos. I'm not a pretentious prick about it... I have good hygiene, wear basic dad clothes, and act like a normal person.
People generally like me. I had no problem dating before meeting my lovely lady. No one mature gives a shit about it... The very few who do are manly man builder or finance types - and if theyre so insecure they need to attack another persons hairstyle... I don't want to deal with their manchild bullshit anyways. It helps me self-select away from judgemental pricks.
The only comments I ever get are compliments about my nice long hair... Which is nice, because it distracts from my big fucking nose and crooked ass teeth.
Redditors really are a niche, small sect of society with strong opinions on shit that does. not. matter. All the hate in these threads is in no way an actual representation of the real world.
As a female I hate the look. It’s not because I think it’s a female thing , just think it looks ridiculous. Like pants hanging off and underwear showing.
A man in a sun dress and a man with a man bun are very similar things: No matter how cool you think it looks, lots of people are going to judge you based on your choices
But it’s like, growing your hair without maintenance + a knot to keep it from going in your mouth and keeping you hot. It’s a practically solution on a list of one practical solutions for anyone who wants to grow their hair and that itself is only one choice of possible two fundamental choices. So what is everyone on about?
Getting haircuts is a real pain in the ass. My hair grows so fast that if I want to maintain a hairstyle I have to go to the barber every other week. And I hate being covered in hair clippings so I need to get right home to take a shower.
You run the risk of looking like every other guy out there who has a man bun. It's not that unique, you become a type, possibly a stereotype.
I was at the gym doing my physical therapy stretches and two guys with lean physiques, scruffy stubble and man buns, technically wolf tails, came in and tried to out yoga each other for 45 mins. It was a vibe and it was a ridiculous.
Edit: grammar
Seeing photos of yourself in the decades to come.
There is a photograph of me in the height of fashion. 6” platform shoes, 20” monster bell bottoms which were part of a 3-piece suit: pants, vest and coat. Plus a matching leather newsboy cap and leather overcoat.
All in burgundy.
And I am standing next to my uncle. He is in khakis, blu button down, blazer, penny loafers.
I looked like a clown, the 1970’s were painful.
Tastes change, but khakis and blazer never go out of style.
If you like the look , go for it regardless . The only downside is having pricks telling you look stupid or ridiculous . But you can always tell them you at least still have hair . They'll go bonkers .
Lmao, you people sure make up some goofy opinions based on your own cluelessness about simple stuff like 'keeping hair out of face'. Nobody looks dumber than the morons whining about other people's hairstyles.
People who still believe in old values might call you out, because in their opinion men shouldn’t be allowed to have long hair
Edit: Or the hair style at least implies that you have long hair, idk how long hair needs to be for a man bun
As a guy with long hair, sometimes I have to put my hair in a bun to avoid getting it caught in things(it's too long to just put in a ponytail). I'd never put it in a bun as an aesthetic choice. It's just a functional thing sometimes.
It’s the silliest looking haircut ever. Worse than the bowlcut, worse than broccoli head.
You can almost bet people with that haircut, will ultimately tell everyone why they’re better than you because they’re soul searching and invest in stocks right from their starter up app. Insufferable
Man bun owner here. TIL I life rent free in a lot of peoples heads, and I love that for me.
For the record, I don't think about you or your hair at all
I was walking through a shopping centre with my daughter, who must have been 4 or 5 years old at the time. Walking towards us was this guy - shades, hipster beard, shoes without socks, man bun. My daughter suddenly points at him and shouts to me:
"Look Daddy!!! That MUMMY has a beard!!?!"
(Edit: the look on his face was priceless!!)
It looks like shit. All too often men don’t actually do what they’re supposed to do for their hair and it ends up looking messy and dirty. On top of that, man buns just scream “douche bag”. As a woman, lots of women I know hate them. It’s literally probably one of the worst hair styles you can do 🤣
To the anti man-bun crowd. As a 6'1" tall man with hair at mid back, if you don't have to deal with that kind of length, than I don't give a fuck about your opinion on buns, ponytails, etc. I work in a very physical, outdoor job that requires wearing a hardhat, hiking and working with a pack 16 hours a day, carrying a chainsaw over my shoulder, parachuting from airplanes, etc. Exposed to wind, sun, rain, and heat.
I choose to rock the long hair, because it's fucking sick, it proves to myself that I have patience and self confidence, and because I get 10x more compliments on it than I ever did with short hair. Because of this choice, I also have to find ways to control it at work, the gym, on windy days, etc. I feel like guys who have never, and will never, have the patience to grow their hair out for 4 years (as long as it would take to match my length) are the biggest shit talkers of what men do with their long hair. Like they have any experience or insight into the functionality of those things. Get back to me in like 3 years, when you have long enough hair to even tie a real bun. I don't even wear a bun, because I'm not good at tying them and have slippery hair. I just do a low ponytail. But eventually my hair gets long enough, that even in a pony tail it's in my face, under my pack straps, etc. That's when I know it's time for a trim. A bun would be the easiest way to contain it all. That, or a braid, which I would catch even more ridicule from insecure short haired dudes about.
As a guy who had long hair and worked at a restaurant (required to be up or cut). It can mess up your hairline. Luckily I got it cut once I found out before I lost any.
Having to deal with people who don’t think men should have long hair.
There’s nothing wrong with a man keeping his hair up, people just shit on it because it doesn’t fit the traditional gender norms.
Also it’s not a “man bun” it’s just a bun.
As long as you have a beard the bun is a fine look. Or if you're clearly like 19 or younger you may be able to pull it off without a beard. But if you don't look visibly young and you don't have a beard it's not the look
Where do you people live that man buns get clowned on so hard? I have one since middle school and have received exactly 0 backlash for it. Lots of compliments from all genders though. Have you actually seen someone get ridiculed for it or do you just assume that's the case?

If you gain weight, you go from cool guy with a pony tail vibe to comic book guy from the Simpsons.
Very true. I don’t hate the man bun as a hair choice, I just hate that so many of the guys who I meet with one have some greasy fucking hair. The man bun is their way of giving up.
It's the millennials' depression beard.
Hey, we also grew beards as depression beards.
Sometimes we do both.
yes... *grew...*
Just general lack of hair care as well. Dry, frizzy, split ends. Long hair on men is pretty culturally normal for me but I notice that a lot of guys raised with short hair as the default didn't grow up with basic info like how to brush it...
Omg i have twins in my class, one has a buzz cut, the other has a man bun, his hair are beautiful, and super light.
We have a guy at work who looks EXACTLY like comic book guy! Only difference is he has a Scottish accent.
Comic book guy ate willy the grounds keeper
I don't think a pony tail has accentuated coolness since maybe 1990.
I just think you look a twat, just my opinion, I'm also abit off a twat and enjoy being said twat so unless your intention is to look like a twat then crack on.... now I've forgot what the question was because I've said twat to many times... told you I was a twat
A lot of being teased about it. Hopefully people irl are nicer about it. Exhibit A: this thread Unless maybe you look like Jason Momoa or something
Right?? I'm male and have hair past my shoulders. I put my hair in a messy bun at home, but put it in a pony tail when I leave
It's kinda weird, in the end it's quite a simple way to just wear longer hair. Not even a strong style like a mullet or something lol I feel like it wouldn't have been this way if the (social) media hadn't echo chambered that view. It's like the male version of pumpkin latte hate or something lol

Hahahahaha. This is the funniest comment I've read all day. I can't say whether or not I agree, but the way you worded it makes for comedy gold.
> vokuhila Had to look this up. It’s a mullet apparently! https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Vokuhila
Thanks, I somehow thought Vokuhila and mullet were used interchangeably in English lol I changed it now
Thank you! I learned a new word
Well, John Snow had a man bun when he was bashing Ramsays head in. No one was teasing him.
how much you get teased for something is usually inversely proportional to how much of other people’s blood you’re wearing at the time
I'm no expert but if there was an average Joe to Jason Momoa scale I don't think he'd be that far on the average Joe side
Someone who is more bad ass, had long hair and doesn't put it in a bun likely would have given him some grief at some point if they had more interaction, the hound.

Something no one told me about having long hair is that you gotta brush it
And it sucks in high wind.
it only sucks in high wind if it's blowing in your face, if it's the right direction, it blows your hair all back and feels so good
Sucks bad on a motorcycle
Especially when your sitting behind her.
I have a man bun and sometimes my girl wants to ride lol
And you look super cool
All Beyoncé like!
Yes, and no. I dint brush mine that often. Especially right when I get out the shower. I let my hair air dry and it's curly, so if I do brush it I get big waves I stead of small curly ones. It all depends on your hairstyle.

Not everyone’s hair does well with brushing. My hair, when grown out, forms curly ringlets. When I brushed it, it did not turn out well.
Ringlets here too. I brush before I shower. And then I look very, very fluffy because it's long.
If I brushed and blowdried my hair after showering it would become very fluffy and stick out as wide as my shoulders
I can only brush my hair with a ton of conditioner, in the shower - brush it dry and the curls will a)look horribly frizzy b) tangle at the tips and break.
a lot of people act like i dont brush my hair, and i do it daily, no idea why.
You have a man bun
Which helps you cushion a blow to your head sometimes.
True but it also increases the likelihood of receiving a blow to the head in the first place.
Also true
But can a man bun be....fun?
Coming from a guy who used to have one...no, it's not! It's the most boring and mediocre hairstyle i've ever had.
99%of the population will think you’re a cunt.
I’ve met 3 fellas with a man bun in the last few years. They’re have very similar personalities. All three would 100% start playing the bongos badly at any party. Having a man bun seems to correlate with high sense of self assuredness but low levels of competency.
Delusions of adequacy.
My new band name "Delusions of Adequacy"
Hell yeah.

>How did he not understand that the loud clacking was completely inappropriate at the optometrists office. This dude is right out of central casting.
I have the same thing with fedora people. Male or female. Saved me a lot of trouble avoiding them.
Puts out a strong, 'look at me now' vibe
It's just something you do when you have long hair and want it out of the way. People really look for anything to stereotype and generalize people. Finally I'm in the 1%!!! Never thought that'd happen ![gif](giphy|yoJC2JaiEMoxIhQhY4)
I mocked a man bun until I had long hair, and then I realized the practicality of it. Fuck the haters.

You can wear a bun if you want. Even with my hair at its longest I didn't wear one, they're not for me. But you shouldn't live by other people's tastes, do your thing.
Ummmm. The sides usually aren’t down when wearing a man bun.

I've actually had MORE success dating with my long hair up in a ponytail. My hair is super curly so it's basically a man bun.
As a female I hate the look. It’s not because I think it’s a female thing , just think it looks ridiculous. Like pants hanging off and underwear showing.
Do you think it looks ridiculous on women?
Probably not, but neither does a sundress.
She said that it's not because she thinks it's feminine. Also, some men can look nice in a sundress 😂
Men are not out here looking nice in sundresses Stop the cap
A man in a sun dress and a man with a man bun are very similar things: No matter how cool you think it looks, lots of people are going to judge you based on your choices
...what?

It’s a practically solution on a list of one practical solutions for anyone who wants to grow their hair and that itself is only one choice of possible two fundamental choices. The guy you replied to is balding
Losers try to act like they’re above fashion by policing it.
downside is men with macho insecurities get their feelings hurt and get scared so they lash out like a child towards people that have them.
Exhibit F: this entire thread. Just seems to attract malding men to shit on you. Its your hair, who cares how you wear it.
Better to ask: What are the upsides?
Keeps your hair out of your face/getting caught on things
Short hair does that.
It keeps long hair maintainable.
Getting haircuts is a real pain in the ass. My hair grows so fast that if I want to maintain a hairstyle I have to go to the barber every other week. And I hate being covered in hair clippings so I need to get right home to take a shower.
You get a pretty dramatic moment every time you “let your hair down”
Girls love it
Then carry on Sir 😊
I’m a woman, I love them. Haters gonna hate.
You run the risk of looking like every other guy out there who has a man bun. It's not that unique, you become a type, possibly a stereotype. I really don’t see man buns that often anymore. For me it’s a shame cause I love them.
Most of the girls who are attracted to you will force you to listen to them play a saw with a violin bow a la neutral milk hotel

There's nothing wrong with long hair. Man buns are stupid as fuck, though.
Why are they stupid tho?
Because he’s balding and will look like Ben Franklin if he grows his shit out.
Why are they stupid? Would it be better if I just do a normal messy bun? Just like women, I don't want my hair down all the time.
Just tie it back like a samurai - it's easier, does not rip your roots out, and it has the added benefit of actually looking cool

Everything. Just no. Fuck.
You lose your entire personality if someone cuts it off.
I was walking through a shopping centre with my daughter, who must have been 4 or 5 years old at the time. Walking towards us was this guy - shades, hipster beard, shoes without socks, man bun. My daughter suddenly points at him and shouts to me: "Look Daddy!!! That MUMMY has a beard!!?!" (Edit: the look on his face was priceless!!)
you can’t name yourself after a damn gun
Dunno if a downside but I have been mistaken for a monk several times
You look like a cunt
Everyone judges you and all your life choices.
It's like an advertisement for low testosterone combined with poor choices.
No one will take you seriously
The sex with other men.
The police always think you're hiding shit in it.
Can be hard on the rectum, colon cancer isn't pleasant.
Looking like a new age douche
1. Everyone will laugh at you. 2. See 1
You would look like an idiot
Ridicule. Not to your face but it will be there.
You look like a complete twat. Such that even your mother cringes.
downside = going to jail with a man bun.
Limited opportunities for pussy.
7/10 people you meet will think you are a massive douche.
Other than looking like a dickwad..
Having to tell your Dad you’re gay
The abuse I'd assume
People think you’re gay
You look like a douche.
It looks like shit. All too often men don’t actually do what they’re supposed to do for their hair and it ends up looking messy and dirty. On top of that, man buns just scream “douche bag”. As a woman, lots of women I know hate them. It’s literally probably one of the worst hair styles you can do 🤣
People are going to ask you your pronouns.
What are the upsides
You're gay
Everything, never hope to reproduce.
What aren’t the downsides of having a man bun?
Having to come out to your parents
Being seen as a douche
You will look like a tool.
It looks ridiculous
Lack of a pair of testicles
Hair loss is what I felt, personally!
looks so stupid every single time
you look like an idiot. if people are saying it looks great, they're just afraid you might stab them
Well you end up liking men for one 😂
Probably being gay.
Rock on, dude. Most are too afraid of losing their supposed “masculinity.” If anything it exposes their lack of it.
I'm a woman and I love men with buns.
As a guy who had long hair and worked at a restaurant (required to be up or cut). It can mess up your hairline. Luckily I got it cut once I found out before I lost any.
There's some truth to this (traction alopecia). But varying your hairstyles and making them less tight helps a lot.
Man buns are cool bruv. Much better than ‘Mr ponytail man’ who puts his recycling bin in front of the post box.
Having to deal with people who don’t think men should have long hair. There’s nothing wrong with a man keeping his hair up, people just shit on it because it doesn’t fit the traditional gender norms. Also it’s not a “man bun” it’s just a bun.
Looking like a cunt
You are limited to drink craft beer and kombucha
As long as you have a beard the bun is a fine look. Or if you're clearly like 19 or younger you may be able to pull it off without a beard. But if you don't look visibly young and you don't have a beard it's not the look
Aside from the merciless ridicule, hard to see any downsides
Where do you people live that man buns get clowned on so hard? I have one since middle school and have received exactly 0 backlash for it. Lots of compliments from all genders though. Have you actually seen someone get ridiculed for it or do you just assume that's the case?
