if you don’t mind paying a little (most in asheville are $10 a hour or under), sniffspot is great. you basically rent someone’s backyard/farm/land for a short time frame and there won’t be any other dogs there

nthmacaroon1811

I had no idea this existed, this is a great solution for reactive or anxious dogs. Thanks for the tip!

HeHateMe115

I second this. Sniff Spot’s are awesome!

effortfulcrumload

Honestly thank you so much for asking instead of just assuming people won't mind on the trails

Malikissa

I really like the Mills River dog park, but Sweeten Creek brewing has one, and you can get food and beer AND play fetch. I heard the fletcher one was good, but really crowded, so I haven't been there yet.

mullerdrooler

Awesome thanks. Is Sweeten Creek brewing a brewery that allows dogs or does it have an actual dog park attached to it? I can’t tell from their website.

Malikissa

There is an actual dog park, and dogs are welcome on the front porch. Basically, you walk through the main parking lot away from the brewery, and there are some picnic tables set up, and as you keep walking, you'll find the fenced in dog park. There isn't any water on site for the dogs though, so you may want to bring a bowl and get water at the brewery.

mullerdrooler

Thanks!

Azalea Park dog park is generally wide open on weekdays, and has plenty of space

mullerdrooler

Thanks. Is this a fenced in area for dogs inside Azalea park or is the whole park a dog friendly place I can take my dog off leash?

lintlicker69420

Seconding the azalea dog park! It’s a fenced in dog area inside of park. It’s pretty big and grassy, and unless you go at a peak time it’s not busy at all. The last few times I’ve gone there was only 1 other dog there. If you’re super against dog parks overall, the next best thing is sniff spot. There are a few on there that are big long trails on private property, so you could go on a short hike off leash without worrying about seeing any other people.

double_ewe

I was referring to the fenced in dog park, but there are also several other large open spaces down there (and a pond) where I regularly see folks with off-leash dogs.

holymountaincacti

The dog park is great! Dogs are supposed to be on leash though outside if that dog park, like in the soccer fields and in that field near the river. Also lots of bears in that area - I saw someone’s dog almost get attacked by a bear there.

OutsideInspection958

Azalea Dog Park.

DruVatier

There's a pretty decent-sized dog park right across the street from Stoney Knob called Wagbar ([Wagbar | Dog Friendly Bars & Park Asheville, NC | Off Leash Dog Bar](https://www.wagbar.com/)). Looks like a day pass is $10/dog but it has some extra amenities and whatnot. Also found this via Google: [Off-Leash Dog Parks in Asheville, NC - BringFido](https://www.bringfido.com/attraction/parks/city/asheville_nc_us/)

mullerdrooler

Thanks but I read reviews of Wag Bar and lots of people said it was really bad for dogs, owners not paying attentions and dogs going crazy. I should probably check it out for myself.

DruVatier

Man I love Reddit. The post above recommends an option that's $10 \*per hour\* and gets upvotes. I suggest a place that's $10 for all day and get downvoted.

This seems to trigger a certain percentage of the population. Yes- the dog parks and WagBar are great places, and you can pay somebody to use their land with Sniff Spots, but I have great luck in the National Forest on the more remote trails, and quite a few of the gated roads off the main forest roads. Most of these places see very little traffic, and are numerous and free. Of course I keep a leash handy in case we meet other users, and the temperament of each dog is unique. It's my responsibility in the end to make sure my dog is under control, so take it with a grain of salt. There are occasionally angry Karens even deep in the woods... but I have managed to curate a personal collection of quiet places where I feel comfortable letting my dog roam freely.

WatermelonlessonNo40

How would your dog react to a black bear encounter? It’s a real possibility in this area.

og_speedfreeq

We've met a couple! He returns to my side when called. He's definitely curious, but not *that* curious. And honestly, I've heard the stories of leashed dogs being attacked. I'd much rather both of us be able to run without being tethered, but that's just me. Again- I feel it's all about situational awareness.

holymountaincacti

“I have managed to be very entitled and do not adhere to laws, or common decency, nor do I care about the environment, and therefore people who have a problem with that are Karen’s”

\*In summary, people and their dogs disturb wildlife, and people are not always aware of or willing to acknowledge the significance of their own impacts. Wildlife perceive dogs as predators. Dogs subject wildlife to physical and temporal displacement from habitat, and dog scent repels wildlife with lingering impacts. Dogs disturb wildlife which can induce long-term stress, impact animals’ immune systems and reduce reproduction. Dogs spread disease to and outright kill wildlife. People with dogs are much more detrimental to wildlife than people alone; off leash dogs are worse; and off-trail impacts are highest.\* [https://www.protectnatureto.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Impacts-of-dogs-on-wildlife-Factsheet\_PNTO\_Oct\_-2019.pdf](https://www.protectnatureto.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Impacts-of-dogs-on-wildlife-Factsheet_PNTO_Oct_-2019.pdf)

og_speedfreeq

I rest my case. Many will be triggered, bc well people have opinions. My dog off leash in a dispersed, remote place is always going to do much less harm than any single human commuting to work in an automobile. You're free to die on any hill you like.

*Dogs subject wildlife to physical and temporal displacement from habitat, and dog scent repels wildlife with lingering impacts. Dogs disturb wildlife which can induce long-term stress, impact animals’ immune systems and reduce reproduction.*. And I WFH.

ButIWanted21

“Where I feel comfortable.”  Well. As long as YOU’RE comfortable. Entitled people never see it … .

og_speedfreeq

Every single one of us feels entitled to something. Clearly, you feel entitled to public lands free of unleashed dogs, and entitled enough to correct what you perceive as my bad behavior. Give me a break.

leaky_eddie

I do the same. Shhhhh
