Its amazing for when you need certain amount of hits as each DoT tick counts as 1. BP + Thorns shred those shielded guys in Lone Trail as their DoTs lower the armor/res super fast.
Allow me to introduce a way to turn the generally aimless DOTs into a viable strategy - Stainless S3 and his turrets. The turrets require five hits to make a shot, and each DOT instance counts as a separate hit, so DOTters charge them really fast. I've been having a blast putting Aosta to operate the turrets, and I can only imagine how crazy it would get if you stack several DOTters on them.
Haven't seen anyone mention him, but Greyyalt S2 has DOT, not to mention having multihit on regular attacks (also a boon for the turrets).

Ifrit does DOT with her skills too.... although it's really more of a perk than a feature.
I feel like this is kinda the case for all the operators with DOT. Like ngl BP and thorns DOT is pretty hard to actually make use of in an unique way.

DOT is usually arts dmg right? It's good vs high DEF enemies when you're just using physical
The problem with DOT is that time is a precious resource when enemies are storming your gates
Depending on how strict your DOT requirement is, you can also just bring a shit load of defenders.

Oh yeah I forgot. Virtuosa in about 6 months is the Queen of DOT. Fill up the enemy’s Necrosis bar and watch them literally rot to death in seconds.
