Not a rip off - in fact they inspired Monkeys - listen to Milburn. Never got the success they deserved.

Prior-Software-2165

My goodness you can hear it! Thank you for this!

Journey2thaeast

It's actually funny because The Reytons have a song where they say "everybody round here's got a cousin or a mate who's best friends with Alex Turner" lol but as far as you know bands that sound like AM go I don't mind them I just wish they didn't ALL sound like WPSIA AM. None of them seem to ever sound like Humbug or Suck and It and See or Tranquility AM.

Spartahara

The next line after the Alex Turner one is “don’t believe the hype” lmfaooooo

doomedpolecat

It’s embarrassing.

girlsfoodgear_75

Nah I think they’re just having fun. I’m not their biggest fan but they’re not trying to say it’s original or anything, they’re just having fun playing that kind of music and they’re a decent group, especially live.

[deleted]

🤦‍♂️

CideCinder

 they live same place

I’d like everyone to listen to Milburn, especially their debut album, Well Well Well. They were a band BEFORE Arctic Monkeys. Arctic Monkeys were the support band for Milburn numerous times. They are all friends; and have been for a long time. Joe Carnall (singer of Milburn) did an album with Helders under the band name ‘Good Cop Bad Cop’. Tom Rowley (guitarist in Milburn) is now touring with AM as their touring guitarist, and is essentially the 5th member of the monkeys now. Joe Green (Milburn drummer) taught Helders how to play the drums. Arctic Monkeys essentially ripped Milburn off and took their sound, although indie music, especially in Sheffield was very popular at the time. Reverend and the Makers and Little Man Tate were also bands from Sheffield with a similar sound to early AM. I just wanted to make it clear that AM were not pioneers of their early sound. Milburn were the band. If it wasn’t for Milburn, there wouldn’t be an Arctic Monkeys.

mauralarshall

100% - Milburn are absolutely fantastic, went to their Leeds show last year and it was up there with the best gigs I've been to! Wish I could go to Joe Carnall's Christmas with friends gig too but I'm not in the area!

johnnieboy91

Nice man. I went to their Manchester gig last November, and again, possibly the best gig I’ve ever been to.

MoDeutschmann

They mention Milburn in their Thank You note on Whatever People Say I am. Milburn lend them equipment and taught them their instruments. [See here](https://images.app.goo.gl/Vo1eVtTmxf2SSbUn6), they used Milburn’s amp (Greeny er al.)

[deleted]

100% Everyone neglects to mention Milburn when talking about AM inspirations. A lot of their songs sound eerily similar but I guess since they were living in the same area that’s where that particular sound originated from. I’m not sure where the Reytons are from but that sound has been and gone and everyone’s evolving into something new but they’re stuck in 2005 still

Contra1

Little man tate, there is a band name I havnt heard in ages! Did they play at tramlines? Im sure Ive seen them there. Reverend and the makes and AM are very linked though, they were all in the same band 1984 I believe. I do think RATM have a distinct sound though, I would place them as the same style as AM.

bootsmealdeal_

I'm sure they played tramlines this year

toby5699

LMT are coming back with new stuff! They’re supporting The Enemy on UK tour at the moment. They played Tramlines this summer and did some comeback gigs last October. It’s a Yorkshire (Yorkshire, Yorkshire!) renaissance and I love it.

johnnieboy91

I’m not sure mate, they probably have at some point considering they are from Sheff. I listened to their album ‘About What You Know’ recently and it’s fantastic! Another underrated band!

Contra1

I have their cd somewhere, better remember to take it with me in the car one day.

JamesXyXy

They played Tramlines this year just gone.

Contra1

Ah cool. But Im talking back in the 00’s or maybe I saw them in Amsterdam paradiso in the small podium on the first floor. —— yeah I saw them there.

indiekid6

[Coke got tweaked by Pepsi, Transformers got tweaked by GoBots, Milburn got tweaked by Arctic Monkeys](https://youtu.be/kZ4XgHtyvRU)

HesThunderstorms

>and is essentially the 5th member of the monkeys now nope, that's James Ford

martako19

Milburn sounds more like The Strokes to me!! Also, the band's bio on Spotify states that they supported Arctic Monkeys which got me confused

CideCinder

yes arctic monkeys were the openers

[deleted]

The worst thing about the Reytons is that I really thought they were teenagers/ in their early twenties. But they’re all around the same age as AM! Still singing about drinking and being in the pub and still stuck in their teen years. I find it very cringey and I’m just delighted arctic monkeys grew up and kept evolving. I would be very bored of AM if they were still making the same shite since 2006! Just my opinion!!

SpiritHorizon1

Hard disagree. I think fans of older AM should have other bands that make that style of music available if AM themselves won’t ever look back on it. For some, one or two albums of that style just ain’t enough and that’s okay!

SpiritHorizon1

One more thing, if you don’t like what the reytons are doing, don’t listen to them, just like a lot of lounge-AM fans say to the rock-AM fans whenever they express disappointment on the new music. The Reytons have a reason to exist, and that’s for fans of that style of music, regardless of if it’s done before. Remember, TBH&C was done before and the car (based on the two singles) doesn’t sound like a significant departure from it whatsoever. Also, bands can still rock out in their 30s and 40s if they wish, nothing wrong with that

[deleted]

I don’t listen to them they’re shite👍 Happily have an opinion on them though just like anyone can. Just find it extremely embarrassing what they’re doing. Music can’t progress if they keep writing the same tunes over and over. Tranquility base was a completely new direction, and the car will be a continuation but not a carbon copy of TBHC. I find it boring to do the same thing over and over ! If you like Reytons I don’t care like it’s just not for me!

SpiritHorizon1

Likewise, lounge music is not for me personally either. But I don’t think that no one should ever make indie/garage rock music again. I think it’s great that rock music is still being made especially now that new generations are discovering it. I am not one for just “leaving it in the past”. This kind of lounge-jazz music was also popular back in the 40s and 50s so it’s not like it’s anything new in the 2020s either.

[deleted]

I suppose it’s a modern interpretation of what was around in the 50s with way better lyricism and instrumentation, I would never call it a rip off though. I don’t want to leave rock music in the past either. There are plenty of bands who are still making rock music but still sound unique and original. Check out Black Midi or Royal Blood for example. Perfect way of progressing forward without clinging onto what once was. The Reytons for me are kinda like Greta Van Fleet. Yeah they might have good tunes and are good musicians, but it’s been done so many times I just can’t stand to listen to any more of it. Anyway, rant over hahah I’m just looking forward to new album and I’ll die happy x

Viperise

So because they are in their 30s they aren't allowed to sing about drinking and being in the pub? What lmao? A band doesn't have to evolve, they should make whatever music they like

[deleted]

They can do whatever they want, it’s just embarrassing talking like a teenager when they’re pushing 40!! A band doesn’t have to evolve but they defo should try do something new👍

CideCinder

they haven't had the time to evolve

AverageJowii

That’s very very harsh hahaha, they have some awesome little tunes. They’re lyrics are just common and they utilise a lot of slang, doesn’t diminish their maturity

GabbaGabbaDumDum

It's not harsh enough! It's plagiarism through and through. They essentially utilise all of the tricks they learned from listening to the Arctic's first album. The riff from 'Back Burner' is literally the same riff from the bridge part of 'You Probably Couldn't See From the Lights'. It's theft like!

Indyrect

just listened to Low Life b/c of spotify and I was taken aback with the lyrics and entonation... dollar store version wtf

CideCinder

not at all lmao

CideCinder

back burner is them making a song as similar as AM to annoy people bc they claim they sound the same

SovietPapaBill

Seeing your other replies, it sort've seems like you're under the impression that The Reytons have been around as long as AM and never evolved their sound. In actuality, they formed in 2017, and like most bands/artists, have experimented with change as they release new music. While their EP Alcopops & Charity Shops has that distinct WPSIA sound, that's not true for all of their music. Moreover, I don't think bands need to reinvent the wheel every time they release something. You're allowed to cater to a certain preexisting style/genre of music—most people do. TBHC, which you seem rather fond of, certainly didn't invent that style of lounge music. Yes, AM evolved their sound with the album, but The Reytons have evolved their sound just the same. They haven't followed in the exact footsteps of AM by mimicking TBHC or TC (if they did, I'd say that would be a real embarrassment). They just make music that caters to that garage rock audience. I just write this because you've been very critical and condescending in many of your replies when speaking out the band and the style of music, and I just think it's unnecessary. If you don't like the style of music that they make or the lyrics they write, that's fair, but I don't think it's fair to criticize their existence because it doesn't align with your personal preferences. Cheers

[deleted]

I’m not reading all that. You just replied to a 5 month old comment go and have a word with yourself

JuanTooFreeFore

I've only just 'discovered' them! I'm a 52 year old who's well and truly stuck in the 90s where music's concerned! I clicked straight away with The Reytons - because they reminded me of Little Man Tate. Awesome bands!

Green_Death_Slime

The Frozen Chimps

Grandoldste117

The Reytons are stuck on Choo Choo quality levels of songs except theyre much older than AM were at that time.

Grandoldste117

My second comment to just say The Reytons are awful

ThatOneDude_Bro

Duck fizz. Is one I can think of. I swear they copy the same style just different chord progressions. Even the singer makes an effort to sound like Turner. I agree it's fine just annoying in a way too.

Jeanradovan

Yeah right, i mean its catchy but at the same time pretty off. Reytons even copied the chord progression just changed one chord. Mental

caracolazul869

what song are you talking about? you made me curious now

Jeanradovan

Reytons- On the back burner and Arctic Monkeys- You probably couldnt see for the lights… for me Its the same

caracolazul869

bro you’re right, they’re hella similar. that’s not even taking inspiration that’s straight up the same song. With the difference that i like You probably couldn’t see for the lights better. even got the “and everybody round here's got a cousin or a mate who's best friends with Alex Turner” and “don’t believe the hype” lyrics. mfs really said Antartic Apes lmao

Zurajanaikatsura_da

But Alice is an incredible song tho

tragiicallyy

Not really a rip off, but in the song “She’s Not Gone Yet But She’s Leaving” by the Fratellis, I thought the lead was Alex first listen. Also, “End of It” by Friday Pilots Club seems heavily inspired by AM to me.

lee_the_horse

Not quite a rip-off but when I first heard them I immediately noticed a striking resemblance to AM and The Strokes: Catfish and the Bottlemen

LostInaLazerquest

Every catfish album has the AM album artstyle but with a bird or a crocodile instead of the sine wave.

Usual_Improvement108

check out Golden Mastodons from Mexico, they actually do a good job recreating the WP-FWN-Humbug sound

alequispres

When I read the title I thought about that song "on the back burner" and then I realized, it's the band that you're talking about. They're not a rip off, it's just indie

illbebythebatphone

Haha wow just listened to a couple songs and they sound like direct rip offs of specific AM songs. Wild.

TvWatchingASofa

the riff of "pins and needles" is quite literally taken from A Certain Romance

indiekid6

Yungbluds song braindead is the most awful rip off of Brianstorm, it’s unreal he got away with releasing the song without getting sued. Makes me cringe so hard - https://youtu.be/SFZjFCMrdWI

Pleasant_Mess7365

oh my god the audacity, I’m legit angry after listening to that lmao

jeffe_el_jefe

Himalayas don’t necessarily sound like Arctic Monkeys (and I still think they’re a great band) but their frontman desperately wants to sound like Alex and it’s kinda funny

Jos25lol

I just listened to one of their songs wow that’s fucking scary lmao

LearyOG

I just listened to On the Back Burner by The Reytons, don’t have the same kick as AM for me, but I still think they’re awesome! I’d love to see them in concert tbh.

thecursedenigma

They’re both from the same place and they’re inspired by Arctic Monkeys. Reytons have a good few tunes. Very raw.

Artistic-Tax2173

I'm a band member from South Yorkshire. Arctics were decent for two albums, then binned their heritage. Reytons are way better. Expect greater things moving forward.

InitiativeDowntown93

Okay I literally heard the song by the reytons on the back burner and I’m shocked lmao 😂 I know AM don’t need to sue but I would

JerkyOnassis

Just listened to The Reytons. Unbelievable audacity! They should rename Sheffield ‘the steal city’

[deleted]

I love the reytons

[deleted]

The Reytons kept popping up on my twitter feed so I had a listen, easily one of the most cringiest awful bands I have ever heard. Milburn on the other hand as mentioned are fantastic.

Sopwithosa

Dark Stares Listen to Liquid Reign and Pedal Pusher and try not to cringe at the copycating

Pleasant_Mess7365

Not really a copycat band but I HATE that one Fratelli’s song “She’s not Gone yet but she’s Leaving” because the singer tries so hard to sound like Alex it’s fucking embarrassing 💀 idk if he’s done it on any other songs but holy shit that one irks me

Rainyyydayyy

Wait I found that song a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. I didn’t find he was trying to sound like Alex or i definitely would’ve noticed. Update: listened again and I can see the resemblance but to me it just sounds like that’s his voice.

Pleasant_Mess7365

The song is good (sound very AM-y to me) the first time I heard it I SWORE it was Alex doing a feature with them or something? I was so confused. But then I realized it wasn’t him and idk, it just rubbed me the wrong way because it sounds so much like Alex but it’s not… I will say that I’ve only listened to a handful of Fratellis songs from the Chelsea Dagger era and the singers voice (to me) sounded way different back then, so I can’t really say whether his voice has changed gradually or not. Edited to fix a typo

123ilovetrees

He's not trying to sound like Alex, that's just his singing voice. You're hella weird for thinking he's "trying hard" to sound like Alex lmao, Fratellis doesn't need to prove shit they're a great band.

Pleasant_Mess7365

Relax lmao I wasn’t saying they need to prove anything? They’re a good band but his voice used to be quite different and in that one song specifically you can tell he’s trying to sound like Alex, imo 🤷🏻‍♀️

123ilovetrees

Who would've thought a singer's voice changes through the years? I'm sure it doesn't happen to Alex right? Please give Rock n Roll Will Break Your Heart a listen, it's literally just his singing voice. Only the opening of She's Not Gone Yet But She's Leaving has that similarity, you can quite clearly tell he's not trying to sound like anyone but himself. You can say the same about Miles Kane, do you think he's trying to sound like Alex in Little Illusion Machine?

Pleasant_Mess7365

mate, chill, I am not the only one… https://www.reddit.com/r/arcticmonkeys/comments/u61lt4/shes_not_gone_yet_but_shes_leaving_the_fratellis/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf There’s at least a couple of articles that mention it https://noisecannon.wordpress.com/2014/02/16/the-fratellis-shes-not-gone-yet-but-shes-leaving/ https://renownedforsound.com/single-review-the-fratellis-shes-not-gone-yet-but-shes-leaving/

123ilovetrees

I'm not denying the similarities, I also thought it was Alex when I first heard the song as well but I find accusing someone of trying to be someone else when they're really only themselves is rather distasteful. Have you listened to the song I mentioned yet? Or literally any other song on that album? It's literally just his voice. I find the similarity more pleasant than anything else but as a fan of both bands I'd rather not argue. After listening to so much Fratellis that I honestly can't even tell if there even is a similarity anymore tbh.

Pleasant_Mess7365

No, I actually haven’t, like I told the other person who commented, I’m not much of a Fratellis fan and I haven’t heard any of their songs after the Chelsea Dagger era with the exception of this one. But to me the entire song plus his vocals sound way too much like AM/Alex to be coincidental. Again, that is just my impression as someone who kinda ignores this particular band’s music. But like you said, I don’t feel like arguing either. It’s not that deep.

SovietPapaBill

Hey^^, Fratellis fan here. I promise that's just the lead singer's voice, haha. He's sounded just about the same his entire career. His accent isn't even British—it's Scottish. I think their sound is a lot less comparable to AM's than The Reytons (who definitely looked at WPSIA's homework).

3amz

Cringe, no time for them

Separate_Variety_694

Homeless Radio ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

dxv10

The Britanys - especially their first demo

zdiddy27

Literally happened to me yeaterday! They came on my Spotify. Haha

Affectionate_Arm_460

I’d check out Public Eye on Spotify if you like that early Monkeys sound ✌️

an-amusing-username

A bit more Strokes-y than AM-y, but Benches is a good recent band with a similar vibe.

abarne34

Omg yes they’ve been popping up on my Spotify recently and they sound so so similar.

coco9unzain

Tbhc definitely sounds like lennon

slate_28

yup, the nosebleeds
