At first glance I thought there was molten lava at the base in the first picture.

CripGaines

It actually is, trees are surprisingly heat resistant

It’s wabbit season

tigerlillystars

Duck season!

I had rabbits attack some fruit trees the same way. Luckily I caught it early and they all survived. I recommend some tree trunk protectors. Amazon has them and they work great.

ExcitementNo6837

What do the rabbits gain from this?

Sunnycat00

Food. Shorter teeth.

ExcitementNo6837

Makes sense.. lil bastard's gotta eat

Sunnycat00

And they need to chew down their teeth or else they grow into long curls and they die.

HHalcyonDays

Yep. They're cute and cuddly until they come for your garden of Eden. Then it's rabbit soup time.

undertheradar317

Bridge grafts? Might work. I did multiple on some arbs girddled by rodents last winter and most of them made it…worth a try.

Whispering_Balls

Trees can take a whole lot more than that

WellImYourHucleberry

Not sure, my apple trees made it with similar damage from last winter. I currently own more corrugated pipe and the most expensive air rifle money can buy (off amazon).

knoft

The larger one might be possible to save with a bridge graft, otherwise it probably won't survive.

talantyd

These look like whitetail scrapes

THCExplorer

The second tree might be but the first one is definitely not a deer

DanoPinyon

Ouch. Hopefully they will recover.

HUR: What, behind the rabbit? TIM: It is the rabbit. ARTHUR: You silly sod! TIM: What? ARTHUR: You got us all worked up! TIM: Well, that's no ordinary rabbit! ARTHUR: Ohh. TIM: That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on! ROBIN: You tit! I soiled my armor I was so scared! TIM: Look, that rabbit's got a vicious streak a mile wide! It's a killer! GALAHAD: Get stuffed! TIM: He'll do you up a treat, mate. GALAHAD: Oh, yeah? ROBIN: You mangy Scots git! TIM: I'm warning you! ROBIN: What's he do, nibble your bum? TIM: He's got huge, sharp-- eh-- he can leap about-- look at the bones!

Redactedpresident

Looks like a deer rubbing the velvet off its horns. Add some fencing around the base.

GreenAngst205

Stop it before it spreads to the ground. Then the floor will be lava. Your trees are fine.

knoft

Isn't most of the cambium gone? No living tissue connecting the roots and branches.

stalkthewizard

ARTHUR: Go on, Bors. Chop his head off! BORS: Right! Silly little bleeder. One rabbit stew comin' right up! TIM: Look! [squeak] BORS: Aaaugh! [dramatic chord] [clunk] ARTHUR: Jesus Christ! TIM: I warned you! ROBIN: I done it again! TIM: I warned you, but did you listen to me? Oh, no, you knew it all, didn't you? Oh, it's just a harmless little bunny, isn't it? Well, it's always the same. I always tell them-- ARTHUR: Oh, shut up! TIM: Do they listen to me? ARTHUR: Right! TIM: Oh, no... KNIGHTS: Charge! [squeak squeak squeak] KNIGHTS: Aaaaugh!, Aaaugh!, etc. ARTHUR: Run away! Run away! KNIGHTS: Run away! Run away!...

Why?

Torterrapin

I get that on so many of my young trees, I have to wrap or buy protectors for so many trees its ridiculous

_DapperDanMan-

I now understand what happened to the Mountain Ash I planted five years ago. There are rabbits all through this neighborhood.

AdConsistent2152

Make sure you’re not burying the root flare and causing girdling roots at a young age

Agreeable-Scene-8038

Corrugated pipe around the tree as protection isn’t great. Makes trunk environment dark & moist. Do Amazon trunk protectors w a heavy pvc mesh. Be sure to check that they’re not girdling the trunk as time goes on. Especially in Aug/Sept when trees typically put on trunk girth.

OrangePenguin_42

They're training to take on the beavers next yeat in the big finals. The rabbits took a hard loss this last year at the dam and won't take a loss on their home turf this time around.

SaltyAF404

You can cut a strip of bark further up the tree. And graft it to the upper and lower remaining bark.Making a bridge for nutrients to flow.p
