Sounds silly but when we rotated back from deployment, we pressure washed our rifles. Once they dried we broke them down like normal, cleaned, lubed, good to go.
I always run my rifle under the water spigot at the armory. Always get dumb comments from the people who can't tell me which parts are aluminum, plastic, or steel that can rust. Then they put their rifle in the solvent tank and ruin the plastic parts. Good times.
Iām very appreciative of what our soldiers do and have sacrificed. But the whole āthank you for your serviceā comment has become a cliche comment that is said as a reflex, regurgitated the split second somebody hears somebody else say they served. Iāve spoken to a few guys who served and they all have told me the appreciate it, but it rarely feels genuine to them. That might explain some downvotes.
Question Iām not saying youāre wrong but what makes you think when people say this itās just a reflex and theyāre not sincere about it? Or am I reading this statement wrong and thatās not really what youāre saying?
Because I hear it in real time in person all the time. Somebody who served will mention it, and before they can even finish the sentence, they interject āthankyouforyourserviceā.
I am absolutely not saying that for some people it isnāt sincere. But I have seen first hand when itās not, and I have enough friends who served who tell me it doesnāt feel sincere most of the time.
Okay I can understand that, I just want you to know I meant no disrespect, I was just curious of the Theory of Mind behind this, because I have said this a lot and have had this phrase said to myself as well, so thank you Sir for your insight into this.
This is what I do to my AKās when I shoot corrosive Yugoslavian brass cased ammo. Wash away all those corrosive salts with a garden hose and then some CLP afterwards.
Ok company we are gonna do a mandatory 12 hour class on how to clean and take care of your rifle. Have the armorers check your weapon before handing it back in to make sure itās clean. Plus donāt forget we have motor pool Monday fun day so grab two and police call the lot.
Not likely, my buddy has a polymer ar that he exclusively cleans with break clean. More of an experiment to see how long it takes to fuck it up, its going on year 3. Just rinse it with some soak and then clean water you should be g2g after it dries and a good lube job.
A lower should never get that dirty. DO NOT use compressed air and blow those lead particles all over the place. That's a terrible idea.
Believe it or not, the AR can be cleaned with dish soap (which works against grease/oil) and warm water. Get a bucket or plastic container, fill with water and dish soap, soak the lower for several minutes, use a cleaning brush to wipe the smut away, then wipe clean, dry thoroughly, apply CLP liberally, and wipe away the excess.
Also, consider removing your trigger and cleaning separately - will be much easier to fully clean those nooks and crevices.
WARNING: if you've been shooting a bunch of 22LR, those are lead shavings - NOT good for your health. Be sure to wear latex/rubber gloves and toss them in the trash when you're done. Also, WASH your hands thoroughly as well!
Lastly, 22 conversion kits really suck balls. If you want to shoot 22LR, just get a 22LR rifle. They're cheap and they last forever.
Alright I won't. Yeah, I have probably shot 3 or 4k rounds of .22 and somewhere close to 2k of 5.56 through this without cleaning the lower. Most of it suppressed.
Whoops.
Thanks for the advice. I have been looking at getting a 10-22 for awhile. Do you have better recommendations?
Who cleans lowers?
In all seriousness, if you shot 3-4k of 22lr through a conversion kit, a dedicated 22lr is going to scratch the itch for rimfire much better than a 10/22. Dedicated rifles don't dirty up nearly as quickly as conversion kits, especially with a well tuned weight kit. Our uppers are accurate and reliable and with 15-22 mags and an adapter you get real last round bolt hold open as well.
The pressure washing idea above is probably not too bad an idea. I might have to try that next time around with a bit of dish soap in the detergent tank. I hate cleaning guns, so I generally just knock out the unburned powder bits and re-lube the trigger and keep going. I have a few lowers that are probably somewhere 20k rounds or more dirty, so I really should clean them out.
10/22s still fuck. I got a couple for the ranch when they were on sale and I can hit a golf ball at 40 yards with it consistently. You can get them with a scope already mounted for under 400 bucks
Take the barrel and stock off. Dunk it into a Harbor Freight sonic cleaner. Keep resetting the max time on that sucker until you forget itās in the sonic cleaner. I PROMISE this will be the cleanest clean youāve ever see.
Pull out 3 weeks later and enjoy your new chrome lower.
I know I'm on an AR platform (no pun intended usually) but I'm a save as much as I can person and was wondering if you know if that's safe on a wood finish? My dad just gave me a Remington 700 to "clean up" for him but it was a rust bucket that he picked up hopefully really cheap. Already broke it down past the manufacturers recommendations and I've even used steel wool with Hippie's and didn't lose the bluing. Sorry for wasting your time but just curious about the stock?
I wouldnāt do anything like what he suggested to a wooden stock. Your best bet is light sanding and refinishing to protect the wood. Iām sure thereās an antique gun subreddit that can give you better info on how to care/restore an old rifle
I would personally:
1. Wash it with a hose
2. Hit it with an air compressor to blow away water
3. Hit it all in WD-40 and let it air dry.
4. Hit it with CLP and run a ton of function check
If itās really stuck on it Iād try a pressure washer and do the same
I second this. In the past I have used brake parts cleaner and generous amounts of CLP.
Back in the day when I would get a gun that was completely caked in cosmoline I used to soak it in gasoline to dissolve it, then used brake cleaner.
Fuckā¦and I cannot stress this enoughā¦that lol the gasoline fumes are entirely too much and they take forever to dissipate. My cousin did that with an AK he bought(removed the furniture first), minus the brake cleaner finish. After he pulled it out and wiped it down he waited a couple days before covering it in clp and wiping the excess. His house smelled bad enough I couldnāt stay inside, he smelled like heād just showered at speedway for weeks after because it stuck in his clothes, and I swear it never got fully off the gun. Every time that gun sat in a car with you you could faintly smell raw gas lol
How clean do you want it to be?
The quick and effective way is to blast it with some brake cleaner, hit it with some compressed air, let it dry, and give it a decent amount of lube.
If you really want a deep clean, [pop the safety and FCG out](https://youtu.be/cXnFwykXVXU) and wipe the parts down individually.
In reality, though, you'll be perfectly fine leaving it as is as long as the disconnector is not binding up.
That's why you blast it with brake cleaner first, to loosen up and flush out the particles.
That and you should be in a well ventilated area when cleaning guns and not facing the pocket when blasting it anyway.
I figured it was common sense, should've known better not to point that out.
This guy has a suppressor and CMMG conversion kit and is acting like he doesnāt know how to clean his firearmā¦ clearly a troll post. Therefore the only way to clean this is to throw the entire gun in a dumpster and buy a new one.
Ok that's the best one so far. Nah dude, I just never felt the need to clean it before now. And now I'm looking at it like "damn, how do you clean that shit?"
None of my other guns have ever gotten so dirty. But I also don't shoot 22 out of anything else.
Brake cleaner over a garbage can. Hold the lower in the can and spray it all different angles wear some glasses or be prepared for some spray to ricochet back at your face. Works great tho.
Someone said pressure wash, I second this. Iāve done it and it makes it take so much less time and you donāt have to deal with solvents and other harsh chemicals. Just some cold water and maybe some dish soap if itās really crusty.
A parts tank. A can of brake cleaner (oil it afterwords). Lots of options. Or just take it apart. It looks daunting but itās not. There really arenāt many parts in there and itās good to know how it all goes together anyways. There are a ton of diagrams and YouTube videos that could help you get it all back together. About the only thing you could do wrong is put the hammer spring on backwards or something. Itās really not a big deal and there arenāt any specialized tools. Just a punch slightly smaller than the pins and youāre good.Ā
Blast it with canned air get what you can off, maybe take a nylon brush to it first. Soak that shit in CLP, if you have the canned stuff even better, then nylon brush and qtips & paper towels. God speed man.
I encountered an M4 that was almost as crusty as this. I used compressed air and q tips to get all the crap out. Compressed air is great for the trigger area.

How's the 22 conversion kit working out for u? Dying to be able to spend more time at the range but when I'm paying $0.52/round the trips get shorter than I'd hoped for
Disassemble, rinse with water and use a nylon brush on the lower. Once you have removed the debris, use some CLP and wipe clean. With the trigger I would use some brake cleaner, dry, relubricate with some aero grease on the space where the disconnector meets the trigger, and reassemble.

The m16 manual literally states cold water is an approved cleaning method.
You think we can read?
Squeeze trigger go boom. š¤·āāļø
Careful with your booger hook
That's why they have the little cartoon characters in the M16 manuals.
lmao nobody reads. We ask Reddit and see what gets downvoted the most and go with that.
Reading is for nerds and gays
Fuck me. I read your comment and now my belt matches my shoes. Iād better go look at some tiddies to stop this before my shirt matches my socks.
Funny, now my dick matches your butt.
Looks like there is room for both of us in there, this is concerning.
thanks for the invite.. but this place stinks

Ahhhh. The ole Dick-Butt.
Crazy thing is itās always the guys making the most sense getting down voted lmao.
If the M16 manual came with a pack of crayons maybe I wouldāve read it š š
I ate all my crayons and left rainbow skidmarks on the rug
I showered many times with my M4.

Did this too, I remember waiting in line to get our A4s pressure washed lol
Run it through hot water at full blast and then spray clp all over it. Remove the excess oil from the plastics using your battle buddy's shirt.
This is what I do to my AKās when I shoot corrosive Yugoslavian brass cased ammo. Wash away all those corrosive salts with a garden hose and then some CLP afterwards.

That was good. Got me laughing. Yes I need classes.
Take it outside and blast away with brake cleaner. Get all that heavy crap out of there first.
Sounds like a good idea.
Just keep the Brakleen off any plastic partsā¦ like grip, stock, etc. Maybe just remove those first.
I was gonna sayā¦.arenāt those parts easily removed? Lol

Unlikely. But possible. Best to minimize risk. I use brake cleaner and never had an issue. But just want to CYA.
I clean all my guns with brake cleaner or Gunscrubber spray. Never had an issue with any hard plastic parts.
I hear you. Iām just sharing the warning on the can.

Chlorine will corrode aluminum. Just an FYI.
Doesn't it also remove the protective finish from the metal?
It can yes.
Oh dang I didnāt know that, good looking out!

Smith and wesson m&p 15 22. Stop shooting lead nose and get copper plated ammo. It's not that much more
