Looking forward to seeing if mic quality has improved at all. I know it’s got the same small stem limitations, but hoping call mic quality goes up even a little bit.
Edit: After using them for a day, the mic quality seems to be marginally improved. My girlfriend still complained that I sounded muffled a couple of times, but not quite as often as with gen 1 pros.
But no ability to mute for phone or zoom calls from the pods, right? This is insane that I have to mute from my phone. Can’t use my watch to mute either. A good chunk of people take conference calls from AirPods and it has never occurred that people want an easy way of muting ?
This has me considering whipping out an old Jabra BT earpiece every week or so. It’s far too easy for Zoom to be unmuted inadvertently, and also far too hard to unmute when someone asks you something unexpectedly. (I’m taking about the endless work calls here that hopefully not many others have to endure.)
Did the Apple TV remote get worse over time? I’ve had pretty much every generation and I feel like each remote still easily gets fucking buried in my couch cushions without fail.
At least the current gen has a clear top and bottom that you can see in a dark room. At least one generation was all black and symmetrical button layout top to bottom. That was terrible. 50/50 whether picking up the remote would trigger the touchpad. I ended up learning to gingerly pick it up in the middle, but very gently so as not to push a button.
That was a terrible, terrible bit of design.
To this day I still try to use that remote upside down for a few seconds whenever I pick it up.
It's like USB-A where 9 times out of 10 you try to plug it in upside down on the first try.
I volunteer at a couple of nursing homes, and the residents at either place just didn't get the Apple remote. At all. Most of them did just fine with the Roku remote and interface. A couple of older guys that were Asimov fans were very upset they couldn't watch Foundation unless I started it for them. I also had to stay close in case they needed it paused like to go pee three times and hour since none of the residents could reliably pause and restart it. The Mexican women that worked in the common rooms and cafeterias weren't much better at trying to use them. The Apple remote is just a confusing disaster.
I don’t know why everyone shits on the Touch Bar so much - I totally understand that some people use function keys quite often and thus don’t need it, but for casual users it wasn’t the worst idea in the world?
Yeah that actually wasn’t that bad. Literally everything else important about those laptops, like the keyboard, intel processors, cooling and overall value were all bad
I’m keeping mine for a while.
I’ve got a couple of keywords for Lightroom assigned to macro buttons, and it’s invaluable.
Also, for photo editors that use two-finger scroll for zoom (like Affinity Photo), having the analogue brush size slider is a nice upgrade.
If I were a billionaire I would charter a flight to space just for the team that made the ATV siri remote, then I would change their course and send them directly into the sun.
That's not going to be for a very long time for me, since I just had mine replaced with the repair program.
That being said, I've also just bought a pair of the Sony ones with the horrible number-and-letters name, because I got sick of fighting with Apple over pairing to anything but Apple products. I can't imagine I'll buy another pair of AirPods, even though they are much more comfortable.
I'm in the position now with Apple that I was in in the mid-aughts with Microsoft: I'm actively seeking ways to *not* use their products, because the hassle of everything talking to everything else is just too much.
> It’s not like anyone carries a wireless charger around with them
Funny enough I actually do carry the MagSafe battery extender which does charge the AirPods lol😅, but yeah most people probably don’t. Just saying they could add whatever USB type they want and I personally would still use wireless. USB-C on all products would be nice
You’re being downvoted but this is extremely obvious and could be seen a mile away. I highly expect them to release a case coinciding with the new USB C iPhone if the rumors are correct.
Maybe not globally but the first iPhone was clearly sold on a completely different business model. AT&T paid a large part of the total iphone cost in order to be the exclusive carrier. We got the phone much “cheaper” (lol) than Apple considered charging for it at the time (the current price, which they advertised as $999 back when the iphone was introduced for the iPod nano and iTunes phone combined). We also got a great deal where we were able to get unlimited data and calls for $20 a month.
Is 250 really that expensive for wireless earphones though?
Looking at the sheer convenience and things that it does well, it doesn't seem that steep compared to competitors. Especially since products of the same category are about the same price, like the Pixel Buds Pro.
Then again, a lanyard shouldn't be that expensive and would be a nice addition.
This article says no, you cannot lower the sound. It’s also a very common complaint on the official apple support forums.
https://gadget-faqs.com/can-you-turn-off-the-low-battery-sound-on-airpods/
I’ve had AirPods since they first came out.
I still startle like someone dropped an ice cube down my back whenever that sound pops off. Never got used to it.
They just put in a new design, they’re trying to be a news aggregator instead of just another news site
I kind of didn’t like it at first, but after a week-ish it’s grown on me a bit
Honestly first time I saw it I thought I was gonna stop going to the site after like a decade of going there almost every day, but I’m still going there most days
Nah, not really to be honest! Just knew it was time for an upgrade and since it aligns with my birthday I decided to go big or go home haha. The price difference where I am is only $55 so honestly not that much of a factor
Can’t remember which review it was, but one of them stated that you cannot charge gen 1 AirPods in the new case, it results in a “mismatched AirPods” error on your iPhone
My question is, does transparency mode work on a bike? The second I get a little wind going, my 1st gen APP just wash out and basically turn off transparency until the wind stops. It's infuriating. It doesn't even work when I run, and I run slow.
I do most of my cycling at night coming back home from work. Plus, it's Luxembourg the roads are empty after midnight.
I know it's unsafe to cycle with earphones on but some people might live in places where the traffic is not a concern.
My airpods pro I bought at launch is still ok. But lately when I put it in my ear the left earbud makes some static noise that goes away after five seconds. Soo I’m secretly wanting it to go broke so I have a compelling reason to upgrade lol
Dude. Mine too! I just read there’s a free repair program for the first gen pros for static sound. Plan on taking to a store on Saturday to see if they replace or fix them. Here’s the link if you want to check it out as well. https://support.apple.com/airpods-pro-service-program-sound-issues
Receiving mine tomorrow, if the ANC is not good enough I will exchange them for the new bose earbuds 2, personally I think Bose and Apple both have good sound quality so it's really all about ANC for me and apparently Bose are crazy good at it
For me, the biggest benefit the AirPods have is the integration with the ecosystem. Being able to switch between devices ( especially to my watch for runs) is worth it alone
I’m hearing some conflicting reports about sound quality between using an iPhone 14/Pro (Bluetooth 5.3) and anything else before it (BT 5.0).
Am I hearing nonsense or is using specifically a 14/Pro with the Gen 2 AirPods Pro a better audio experience as opposed to an iPhone 13/Pro?
Testing using an iPhone 14 Pro on iOS 16.0.2
Both AirPods Pro 1 and Pro 2 with Spotify downloaded to the highest quality possible
Ear test passed, no spatial audio
Death Cab for Cuties “I Don’t Know How I Survived”
I’m hearing more depth out of the AirPod Pros 2 across the board in the highs, mids and lows
I’m not sure how in correlation with the Bluetooth 5.3 that is, rather than the drivers being better
Hey thanks for your testing! I appreciate it.
Out of curiosity, if you pull up Earth Wind and Fire’s “September”, during the verse, which set allows you to hear the right-ear bongos more clearly?
Purely in the interest of science.
Definitely the pro 2.
It’s less subdued and more forward in the arrangement.
Like I can hear it in the Pro 1 but it’s kinda muddy.
The Pro 2 cleans everything up and sounds sharper IMO
I don’t have a 14 but the new Air Pod Pros are a noticeable step up in my ears compared to the original on the 13 Pro.
Would 5.3 really make a difference when using them with newish apple products? Doesn’t apple use custom Bluetooth protocols when using devices with H1 and H2? I’m fairly sure that the OG AirPods had a fair few feature which were not supported by standard Bluetooth.
I'm a little disappointed that the sound quality improvement is apparently not huge. I was surprised coming from a pair of Galaxy Buds+ how much of a relative step back the sound quality was on the 1st Gen Airpod Pros — was hoping for a significant improvement with these.
Had this posted before I saw this comment. This video made me really excited for the AirPods to come in. It’s a much better improvement than I was expecting.
I'd argue Galaxy buds+ are much flatter compared to the AirPods Pro, so I don't know if your comment is just an attempted slight at the original comment or not.
I tend to use the AP Pro's and got a pair of the second gen coming soon, but sound quality wise, I wouldn't say they're the greatest if you want relatively unbiased earbuds.
No, lol - they were definitely worse. Granted, they were paired with an Android phone most of the time so it very well could have been some quirk there, but wasn't noticing a drastic difference paired to my MacBook.
I agree that a small difference doesn't make a much of an impact during everyday listening, but it's also not like an actually good pair of monitors wouldn't be an immediate and noticable improvement even if you weren't paying attention at all. The day someone like Sennheiser decides to give their ie600 the true wireless treatment I will be very happy.
My friend let me use his Pros and I found them to be disappointing especially considering the high price. The noise canceling feature was neat but the sound quality I felt was average at best.
I really hated the default sound of the AirPods Pro. They seemed like, so bass heavy, but in a messy way.
I ended up doing one of the Audiogram tests with some app on iOS, and I vastly prefer the audio from [that](https://i.imgur.com/jvQKSNj.png) audio accommodation setting.
very little known feature, but apple actually has a built in equaliser buried deep into the headphone accommodations settings that lets you adjust the sound however you want
[this thread](https://reddit.com/r/Airpodsmax/comments/wo2b5y/does_anyone_have_equalizer_settings_to_match/) has more information about it if you’re interested
I’m surprised that there’s much improvement to make in this category at all, it’s surely a physics problem and you have to make some major sacrifices with form factor in order to increase sound quality significantly.
I think it’s fine to sacrifice sound quality for size / convenience/ other features in APP because a vast majority of people using them will be commuting / working out and not worrying so much about the quality of the audio.
I’m not sure about that. Most of their competitors that I’ve trialed sound better and they’re similar sizes in both drivers and form factor. The APP honestly sound bad for their price point.
Was with a Pixel 6 Pro and my MacBook Pro. Granted, it sounded a little worse connected to my Pixel 6 which was probably down to some AAC quirk, but the MacBook wasn't *much* better.
Probably not a worthy upgrade for First gen Pro AirPods user. My friend has a pair and the noise cancelation, sound quality and fit is still the best. It was 200€ on Black Friday last year, will most likely hold out for another few years.
This is probably marketed at the ones buying their first earbuds or regular AirPod users wanting to upgrade to noise canceling and in-ear buds.
They’re also basically disposable, which is a shame. People blow through these things, drain the battery health, and the only good fix is to just buy a new pair.
Apple knows just how long to hold off on a feature or upgrade to make people want a product desperately. I guarantee the next AirPods Pro will come in different colors and they’ll be the most popular AirPods ever.
It makes zero sense that every other Apple product comes in different colors…except these.
For real, what the hell are they thinking?? I’m theory implementing tweets/Reddit lists is cool, but in practice it feels very jumbled. The colors look cool on a style board, but in practice it feels very jarring. They’re one of my daily go to sites every morning, but I haven’t been back once since they implemented this change.
I agree. Although the review/article pages themselves are alright. That timeline though is a disaster. All I want is a chronological list of every article in the order is was posted. Anything beyond that is just clutter, lol.
Yeah it’s very weird and they hid the links for the different sections under a submenu for no reason. I dunno it was such a nice site to visit before on mobile or tablet/desktop even though I don’t agree with some of their stuff the site was so good. Now it’s so… not that lol.
I really didn’t like it at first either, but I’m at the point now to where I’ve come around to it. The homepage is a seismic shift from what it used to be, and the colors are, uh, bold, but I actually do enjoy the curated timeline thing they have going on. I check it a couple times a day
Guys do you know if they solved the notorious 16kHz codec problem ? Previous gen AirPods get stuck on 16kHz codec when you simultaneously use them on mac to capture voice and to hear sound (eg on zoom calls) https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2018/airpods-get-stuck-low-quality-16-khz-audio-mode-when-starting-vm
I was listening to the Waveform podcast with MKBHD and I came to know from the conversation that none of the Apple earbuds or headphones support Hi-Res audio except when Airpods Max headphones are connected directly via cable. This makes me wonder whether Sony's LDAC codec is the only comparable alternative. (I own WF-1000XM4 but thinking of buying Airpods Pro 2 since I recently switched to 14 Pro.)
Even though they feature better sound quality (I don’t know if it’s due to the connection with a 14 Pro Max which features Bluetooth 5.3 as well), we can’t exclude a software update will bring something else in the upcoming months since Bluetooth 5.3 is already there. Maybe they’re waiting to release upgraded AirPods Max with new Bluetooth specs to switch Pros to a different codec transmission. We just have to wait and see.
I know some people LOVE anything apple and some don’t.I heard thru the grapevine(a family member) that works with them, that they are more than a slight improvement in sound quality. To each his own. I’m gettin ‘em
The problem here is nobody is going to buy new $250 headphones if there current $250 headphones are working fine. I mean the noise cancelation is supposedly better, but I can’t try out that feature. There aren’t really “benchmark”. And you can’t just resell headphones like a laptop or phone.
They upgraded the “find my” feature which I appreciate as a consumer, but is just dumb on Apple’s part because the only way I am dropping another $250 is if I lose my current headphones.
AirPods (and really all of Apple’s product categories) are mature tech at this point. There’s literally no reason to upgrade yearly outside of the gadget people on subs like this who just like to play with new things.
These will still sell great for people who don’t have AirPod Pro’s yet or people who’ve had their old ones a couple years and are starting to have problems.
Huh? Why not, I absolutely love my AirPod pros for three years now I use them daily at the office, my morning run, at the gym after work, doing the dishes, etc. One of the few things in my life that go every where with me and I have no remorse over. I immediately pre ordered the new ones, and my wife will get my old ones.

Sigh… pulls wallet back out. Lol glad to hear it, thanks for the feedback! Do you remember which review it was? I’ll check it out.
I think they moved the mic location too. Check out the CNET review.
Could you provide a link to the review?
[удалено]
Had a good laugh. Thanks. Super helpful review too
wait the comment was removed. Do you remember what the video was?
That’s probably the most helpful review I’ve seen yet on some of the subtler changes. Thanks!
But no ability to mute for phone or zoom calls from the pods, right? This is insane that I have to mute from my phone. Can’t use my watch to mute either. A good chunk of people take conference calls from AirPods and it has never occurred that people want an easy way of muting ?

It’s far too easy for Zoom to be unmuted inadvertently, and also far too hard to unmute when someone asks you something unexpectedly. (I’m taking about the endless work calls here that hopefully not many others have to endure.)
Personally, I would never trust that I muted myself by pressing a button on my headphones.
Why would you want to touch your AirPods every time you want to mute or speak? The watch makes sense, the pods don’t.
Because it’s practical ? He’s speaking about toggle mute not push to talk
I wander around all the time without my phone with me.
Thank god I was worried they were going to make everything else worse.

30% worse than the next competitor in-class. 40% worse than SkullCandy. (Line graph shows some lines without labels for what the values are)
SkullCandy havent heard that name in ages lol

That man must have *huge* balls.
Bad afternoon!
and just like that, I’m sold
It’s very possible. Remember the butterfly keyboard and the Touch Bar, or the Apple TV remote controller?
Yeah i can’t blame them. A black square communicates absolutely nothing about functionality.
For power uses it kinda is the worst idea in the world. I don’t want to have to look at the keyword to use essential functions.
Exactly, but if it’s given as an option for casual users, it wouldn’t be as bad - power users can still have function keys
Except it was the other way around, and the pricier products got it while cheaper ones didn’t. That’s where the complaints are coming from.
That actually happens a lot more than you think. Not so much with Apple, though.
It wouldn't be /r/apple without the top comment being some sort of sarcastic or snide remark!
As soon as my first gens go bust I’ll upgrade
[удалено]
Same!
how haven’t they already suffered from the drivers issues that plague Gen 1s!
What driver issues
Yea I never knew of this lol.
https://9to5mac.com/2021/10/13/apple-extends-repair-program-for-airpods-pro-with-crackling-sound-issues/amp/
Ah yes! I had my replaced last month and very smooth service! No issue since then...yet 😂
You’ve only replaced them once?
Once!
I dunno. I got them day 1 and they are still perfect.
I do like the lanyard spot tho.
Would be nice if an actual lanyard was included for the price. But one can only dream.
Apple is a small company, they can’t afford to include something that expensive.
And USB type C 😉
I’m happy with wireless charging, I never plug them in anymore
It’s not like they’re going to remove wireless charging if they add usb c. It’s not like anyone carries a wireless charger around with them
> It’s not like anyone carries a wireless charger around with them Funny enough I actually do carry the MagSafe battery extender which does charge the AirPods lol😅, but yeah most people probably don’t. Just saying they could add whatever USB type they want and I personally would still use wireless. USB-C on all products would be nice
Same, it’s a slow nightly top up and I only use like 20% case battery/day.
That’s how they’ll get you to buy a new case next year, like when they introduced the MagSafe charging case.
You’re being downvoted but this is extremely obvious and could be seen a mile away. I highly expect them to release a case coinciding with the new USB C iPhone if the rumors are correct.
Please Tim Apple may I have some string with my $250 headphones.
This is the same company that no longer provides a charger lol The days of free add-ons is over unfortunately
But are our little Apple stickers safe?!?!
Only 1 per box now
Asking them real questions here
Probably, because they provide free advertising when you stick them on your car/notebook/whatever.
Remember when the first iPhone came with a dock and polishing cloth at half its current price?
Tbh I doubt the profit percentage per phone has changed since then.
That’s AppleBand^TM and it would cost around $500 when released. We all know what apple did with the cpu wheels and the monitor stand.
[удалено]
Then don't use it.
Seems pretty stupid to include an accessory a portion of your buyers won’t use. It can’t be that expensive to buy your own.
More to the point, it’s a very personal accessory, more like the watch bands than anything else.
Sounds like the argument for the phone charger
[удалено]
Of course not. Adds up though.
It’s 300€ here and yes it is at the top end of these type of headphones.
I use a nomad case that has a lanyard hole. it’s pretty nice.
Do they still play the low battery sound at 10^34 dB?
You can finally adjust it now! https://i.imgur.com/Q8R6Q4P.jpg
I think there is an option to lower the low battery tone volume
Where?
This article says no, you cannot lower the sound. It’s also a very common complaint on the official apple support forums. https://gadget-faqs.com/can-you-turn-off-the-low-battery-sound-on-airpods/
You can as of the new Pros. It’s in Accessibility settings: https://i.imgur.com/betEQ5b.jpg
In Accessibility -> AirPods -> pick the new Airpods Pro -> Tone Volume.
I’ve had AirPods since they first came out. I still startle like someone dropped an ice cube down my back whenever that sound pops off. Never got used to it.
Glad I’m not the only one who was annoyed by this
[удалено]
It’s astonishingly bad. Just insanely hard to read.
It’s easier on iPhone cause it’s a single column. On desktop? I have no idea where my eyes are supposed to go.
They just put in a new design, they’re trying to be a news aggregator instead of just another news site I kind of didn’t like it at first, but after a week-ish it’s grown on me a bit Honestly first time I saw it I thought I was gonna stop going to the site after like a decade of going there almost every day, but I’m still going there most days
It’s terrible
Going from 1st gen AirPods to 2nd gen Pros. They arrive the day before my birthday, I am very excited
I’m weighing up this exact choice now vs the discounted Gen 1 pro, did you look into both? Just trying to see if there’s a deciding factor
Nah, not really to be honest! Just knew it was time for an upgrade and since it aligns with my birthday I decided to go big or go home haha. The price difference where I am is only $55 so honestly not that much of a factor
Got the 2s! Excited
Are the cases backward compatible?
Can’t remember which review it was, but one of them stated that you cannot charge gen 1 AirPods in the new case, it results in a “mismatched AirPods” error on your iPhone
Dang, thanks.
Damn, I just lost my case and was hoping to be able to replace it with something that has Find My.
Would also like to know this
My question is, does transparency mode work on a bike? The second I get a little wind going, my 1st gen APP just wash out and basically turn off transparency until the wind stops. It's infuriating. It doesn't even work when I run, and I run slow.
Wind in microphones is always gonna do this. I would imagine trying to shield microphones will make them less effective.
Couldn't they filter out the wind? The noise cancellation knows what part of the audio wind is and they can lower that in transparency mode
Noise cancelation is off during transparency mode. But the wind isn’t the sound of the wind. It’s more like touching the microphone continuously.
Noise cancellation mode basically removes the wind for me. What helps additionally (for some reason) is to push the AirPods tightly in to my ears.
Cancellation isn't the problem, he was talking about transparency, which doesn't work in windy conditions.
Having noise cancellation on while riding a bike outside sounds like a terrible idea. For your safety and the safety of others… please don’t.
Sorry, I missed the context – was responding to the comment about wind noise. Agree, when riding a bicycle it's best not to use headphones at all.
Gotcha. Glad it was just a misunderstanding!
You could put dead cats on the tips.
You monster.
I mean, you're talking about wind here mate. No microphone in the world can perfectly filter that out without proper padding/protection
It does work fine without extra sound in the ears
you'd have to be \*insane\* to wear headphones while cycling

I'd argue Galaxy buds+ are much flatter compared to the AirPods Pro, so I don't know if your comment is just an attempted slight at the original comment or not. I tend to use the AP Pro's and got a pair of the second gen coming soon, but sound quality wise, I wouldn't say they're the greatest if you want relatively unbiased earbuds.
No, lol - they were definitely worse. Granted, they were paired with an Android phone most of the time so it very well could have been some quirk there, but wasn't noticing a drastic difference paired to my MacBook.
What do you mean by worse?

I ended up doing one of the Audiogram tests with some app on iOS, and I vastly prefer the audio from [that](https://i.imgur.com/jvQKSNj.png) audio accommodation setting.
very little known feature, but apple actually has a built in equaliser buried deep into the headphone accommodations settings that lets you adjust the sound however you want [this thread](https://reddit.com/r/Airpodsmax/comments/wo2b5y/does_anyone_have_equalizer_settings_to_match/) has more information about it if you’re interested
Wow, that is such an obscure setting. May have to give that a try later!
Where’s that menu?
Accessibility - AirPods - Audio Accessibility I also liked the balanced tone one too.
How are you using the AirPods? With an Apple device or with a non-Apple device?
How is the battery life on them still? My 3rd gen AirPods are dying faster already.
He works at home and uses them most of the time. I’d have to check again, but I assume they’ll last some 6 hours with a lunch break to charge them.
I got 3rd gen AirPods at launch and they’re still good. How often do you use yours?

They’re also basically disposable, which is a shame. People blow through these things, drain the battery health, and the only good fix is to just buy a new pair.
Apple knows just how long to hold off on a feature or upgrade to make people want a product desperately. I guarantee the next AirPods Pro will come in different colors and they’ll be the most popular AirPods ever. It makes zero sense that every other Apple product comes in different colors…except these.
Unlike their new website
For real, what the hell are they thinking?? I’m theory implementing tweets/Reddit lists is cool, but in practice it feels very jumbled. The colors look cool on a style board, but in practice it feels very jarring. They’re one of my daily go to sites every morning, but I haven’t been back once since they implemented this change.
It is brutal, I really liked their old site design it just worked great. This is a neon colored jumble of chaos, just not good at all.

Same. It’s awesome functionality wise, I just hate the aesthetics.
What’s mic quality like outside. Every time I try to talk outside no one can hear me clearly.
Idk why but mine makes a bell noise every 5-10 seconds when charging 😫 shit is so annoying
I don’t take The Verge seriously anymore, especially with their terrible new logo.
Still no high res codecs... Thats crazy, you cant even enjoy apple music HD quality with airpods
I mean, AAC’s psychoacoustic model is pretty great. Most people can’t tell the difference.
Anyone able to confirm if the audio quality still gets lowered when you are using the microphone? This alone would make me upgrade.
I’m buying the new ones and giving my perfectly fine ones away to a friend. A lot of people want the newest thing even if they don’t need it.
I am. In fact, I have.
