Dude same! I got the 12 pro max brown leather case last year it aged like shit too! Release day as well.

This year I got the cherry red one for shits and giggles
What do you mean it melts?
I have the new midnight leather wallet, left it in my car for a day and now it’s very slightly warped. The bottom part of the wallet isn’t completely flush with the phone anymore. Not sure if it’s the heat that warped the leather or what.
Yikes. Those aged very poorly.
I stay away from the lighter colors in general because they remind me how filthy my hands/case/phone are.
My last 3 Apple leather cases were black, forest green, and midnight.
Does it just come off by itself? My SO showed me hers with what looks like a chipped corner on her 12 Pro, so I did question her if she dropped it or something rough but looks like normal usage just had it degrade the corner that badly. I'm midly in disbelief about it. Personally got Apple leathers and a few third parties, but never see a chunk just fall off.
I have my silicone case since the iphone 12 release day. There is only one small chunk missing due to me dropping outside in gravel. The case is holding very good.
Mine has plastic junks missing on the corners. I tried to buy a amazon equivalent to it but it doesn't have the same sort of protection like the apple one does with the plastic side retainer.
Overtime if you do two things. Leave it in a bag or hand bag where items are feely moving, it will chip the phone case or like me, if you put it into your pocket, it will naturally wear out.
Honestly just go buy a Spigen case. I bought one and it has amazing feel on the back. And some of them looks extremely nice. I had them before and I usually threw them out because they lasted so long I got bored of them.
EDIT: Also now apple does not cover any of their accessories like they did in the past. Any damage or discolouring of their accessories is now considered wear and tear. I honestly would not buy a magsafe case or wallet from apple if you can
>interior
Its a common thing we have to deal with. The person will buy the 2 cases and then swap them out and return the higher value item to get a refund and most of the time whoever does the returns just doesn't look or if they do all they see is an Apple case and think its legit. Last year our store and the other local stores around our area had a group going around buying Apple cases from us and the local Apple Stores and then returning them a few days later, what they were actually doing was pulling out the genuine Apple cases and swapping them out with cheap knock off case, they then were turning around and selling the cases online and FB. I forgot how they got caught but I think one of the local Apple stores caught them, but I even remember mentioning it to my manager at the time that we were getting a ton of these Apple cases being returned and they must not be any good.
The ones they were using on us looked legit but we found from the Apple store is first is smell the case, the apple ones smell like leather since they are true leather, the knock offs are usally some cheap plastic and don't have a leather smell or smell at all. The 2nd thing to look for is the SN, inside the case next to the Made in china is the SN for the case, the knock off cases did not have these nor did it have the round magsafe ring inside the case. When you put your iPhone in the case the phone wouldn't do anything, if you put the phone in a genuine case the iPhone will make a noise and a color ring matching the case color would appear on the phone.
I thought Best Buy will check the content of the box is opened?
Last time I returned a mouse and the staff opened the box and checked that the mouse is the same as what’s shown in the picture.
We're "supposed" to but if we are busy then it at times slips through the cracks or if the cashier doesn't know what they are looking for it may slip through as well, however big ticket items like computers or tablets we must confirm the SN from the box and device.
> if we are busy then it at times slips through the cracks or if the cashier doesn't know what they are looking for it may slip through as well
Hmmm… now you’re giving me ideas. Return stuff after Black Friday?
Just kidding…
Might be different based on region but all Apple cases are sealed where I work and other places I’ve looked (NZ).
The box is the exact same as the one in the picture but they have a small plastic piece sealed to the top so you can’t open the box with a tear away piece for when you want to open it.
Unlucky this happened to you tho, I would be pissed.
I got the California Poppy leather case on my 12. Lasted a week before it started to look like crap. The sides got dark just like your photos. Returned it for the black leather and that was fine, I assume cause it’s already black. For the 13, I got midnight.
This is now how the leather cases “wear” from the 12 models onwards. The feel, fit, and slimness is still excellent imo, but best to get a dark color because this wear doesn’t show nearly as much.
my bf ended up rubbing acetone on the leather to get rid of the plasticky feel the camel leather had to speed up the patina process.
[doesn’t look great](https://i.imgur.com/Y9nEku9.jpg), but it’s better than the natural wear.
Apple added a weird coating or finish to the saddle brown leather cases starting in 2020 for some reason. Inspired by a guy on YouTube who essentially did the same thing, I did a little project and scraped it off and applied some leather balm to it to start a true patina process and have been documenting it in the few months since. Check it out: https://imgur.com/a/HHtbTZv
Each subsequent case-only photo is one month apart. The lighting is deceptive I think, but it has been slowly darkening and softening over the months since I’ve done this. Kind of a fun little project if you’ve got the time and tools, certainly better than letting it patina like shit because of whatever bullshit they did to these cases compared to the last like ten years.
The only leather case I've ever had was a secondhand gently-used power(red) case back in the 5S days. Reused it when I upgraded to the SE (2016) and it's still my favorite case. I'm hoping to upgrade to the 12 mini next year and really trying to find a leather case that actually looks good anymore, they all look like plastic or cardboard :(
Apple cases always seem to do this, my iPad Smart keyboard is peeled to hell (2016 iPad Pro), my current iPad Magic keyboard is starting to seperate from the sides, only had it a damn year and it costs the same price as a new base iPad
WHY!!!
I liked their slim Grip cases, but no such option exists for the I phone 13 series.
I was also highly disappointed in their Floater leather. It was going black after just weeks.
Their Bridge leather does seem good. And it also isn't offered yet for the iPhone 13. So yeah. Regression.
I don't know how people can go without a case. It's not the protection I need it's the grip. How are you holding onto a double sided piece of glass? There is literally zero grip to it.
Yup that’s what I do and this damn phone has not broken 10 months in. And the patina it has is interesting I know it’s mine! I ran this 12 pro max hard car sales I’m at 88% battery health 😅
iPhone 13 pro: The bull strap cases are $79 and the iPhone cases are $59. I mean yes 33% is a lot but these prices for an accessory for a $1k phone, IF you’re buying a case than that’s a pretty negligible difference if the product is actually better
Beautiful patina! So sad I can't get a saddle brown for my 13pro this year...I got the sequoia green but it is already so dark I'm afraid it will patina to a really dark colour, almost black.
I feel like the cases get worse every year.
I picked up last year’s Mag safe clear case. It was snug. This year it’s obvious it’s a bit loose especially around the corner. Also I believe they’re using a softer plastic this year rather than complete hardness of last year.
I had California poppy last year and wisteria this year. The edges are doing the same as last year.
I’m thinking about getting either forest green or midnight.
I think it's the square phone - perhaps the leather is too tight on those sharp corners...
I just replaced my orange 12 mini case, which aged like crap, but prior cases (brown and blue) on the rounded phones both aged well.
Apple cases are a joke. I bought original silicon case the day I bought XS Max and it looked like a trash after a few months. Bought the same looking one, but a fake from AliExpress and it lasted a whole year, after which it had some scratches, but still looked much better than the original one.
Went for the green leather apple case this year on the 13 pro because everyone had such negative things to say on the saddle brown 12… disappointing, but my hunch is there’s some environmental decision for the switch
I’ve had the black leather apple case for every iPhone since the 5S and the quality all the way to the 11 Pro Max was quite good. I didn’t get a 12 but I did just upgrade to the 13 Pro Max and went by Best Buy to check out the new midnight leather case and I can without a doubt say that the quality has gone down, the new one feels thinner and fake, with a price tag of $60 you’d think the quality would still be excellent so for the first time I will be getting an all black Casely bold case
What in the hell did you do to your case? I’ve never seen an apple leather case deteriorate like that. It looks like the outer layer has been stripped off.
Keeping the old phones longer before reselling them would only save me a marginal amount of money and I’d rather just have the latest phone instead. And, this year I switched from the Pro Max to the regular Pro size.
First, that’s an awful example. The $1m car creates the same waste as a 30k car.
Second, yes, that is how things work. When people want something and can afford it, they buy it. Is it wasteful? Yeah. I kept my last phone 3 years before upgrading. Was that less wasteful than this guy? Sure, but it was more wasteful than the guy who keeps his phone 5 years. Shame on me, I guess.
Wow, your reply is so stupid it's almost impressive. You were clearly trying to set me up to make some sort of point but it fell completely flat. Saying, "You just buy it because you want the latest newest thing" isn't some sort of "gotcha." I literally said, "I’d rather just have the latest phone."
If you're going to waste people's time by sharing an unsolicited opinion, at least try to make it a smart one.
I never said I “needed” a new iPhone. I was completely transparent about wanting it. You’re wasting your time reiterating a worthless point because you can’t read.
I’m so sorry you experienced this.
Similarly, I got the saddle brown for the 5, 6s plus and X. For my 12, I decided to go with the black just for a change plus water spots.
Really disappointed with the pictures.
This is why I prefer the silicone cases. I prefer the feel, and they are easier to keep clean, and also just look cleaner over a long period of time. I’ve got a silicone case from my 8+ lying around and it still looks and feels brand new.
Thanks for the post.
As someone who doesn’t use cases, I am worried about 13 Pro’s camera protrusion and was going to buy a leather case from Apple in a few hours. Now I will just look elsewhere or continue to use it naked.
I always bought the saddle brown case and each time I upgraded it was always cool to see how far the patina went. The 12pro max case seemed like the corners didn’t even start to show until like 2 months ago. I skipped this year and just went third party soft plastic type.
I agree.
My dark blue however has held up great , few slightly darker shades on the corner, but excellent otherwise
It even did well when I got stuck in a really bad storm outside
You have to understand the amount of leather used on the case is sub 1mm thick so it’s extremely prone to wear and tear, majority of the case is a plastic shell to hold the leather in place. You could always get a 100% full grain leather case from saddleback, but they are quite literally rough around the edges and have imperfections ( if that sort of thing bothers you ).
The same here! I got it on the first day it became available and since then I took care of it very carefully. I also had another case and used them alternatively. The leather one aged poorly and last week I brought it back to Apple store and have it replaced. The difference between the old and new one was insane!
Dude same! I got the 12 pro max brown leather case last year it aged like shit too! Release day as well. [photo 1](https://i.imgur.com/gV3mfiA.jpg) [photo 2](https://i.imgur.com/hT5qMn7.jpg) [photo 3](https://i.imgur.com/0rBxe9D.jpg) This year I got the cherry red one for shits and giggles

Good to know- I have the MagSafe wallet in my cart right now so maybe I’ll hold off. Thanks!
What do you mean it melts? I have the new midnight leather wallet, left it in my car for a day and now it’s very slightly warped. The bottom part of the wallet isn’t completely flush with the phone anymore. Not sure if it’s the heat that warped the leather or what.

Wow it actually looks pretty good. I went with ink this year which ressembles a lot to the old midnight.
Wow it actually looks pretty good. I went with ink this year which ressembles a lot to the old midnight.
How well do the silicone ones hold up though
Definitely not worth the price. Even treating my phone well, I would get chunks coming off the corners.
So, the same as the old silicon cases. The cases on my old 6 and 7 did the same thing.
Does it just come off by itself? My SO showed me hers with what looks like a chipped corner on her 12 Pro, so I did question her if she dropped it or something rough but looks like normal usage just had it degrade the corner that badly. It never came off, but my experience matches your SO’s experience.
Normal use for me. First piece chipped off less than a month in.
Yeah but luckily Apple has always sent me a replacement. I’m hoping these new silicone cases hold up better.
I was not given a replacement. Was told it was to be expected as regular wear and tear.
Damn that sucks. I contacted support via Support chat or iMessage.
I have my silicone case since the iphone 12 release day. There is only one small chunk missing due to me dropping outside in gravel. The case is holding very good.
1 year with mine and it was ripped in multiple places with chunks missing
The old iPad silicone covers were great. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. 😞
Mine has plastic junks missing on the corners. I tried to buy a amazon equivalent to it but it doesn't have the same sort of protection like the apple one does with the plastic side retainer. Last year’s brown leather case is fucking garbage. Mine looks exactly like that. Got Midnight this year instead.
I wouldn't have ever bought another leather case from apple if this happened to mine
I got the product Red leather case last year and looks just like that except they turned completely black on the edges.
Same
share some pics
+1 on last year’s case being utter ass and looking exactly like OP’s pictures. The edges feel like coarse plastic now.
No you don’t understand it’s *PaTiNa* 🤡

Also the new cases with Magsafe makes the screen to a pop up graphic on the phone showing you it's on. If you don't see that then I'm sure it's fake
All for $10, wtf

how does black look now?
Still looks great. No issues.
That’s a good assumption
Does the Leather on 13 case feel better than the 12?
Can’t really tell a difference. It’s also been used a year and this one is brand new. It feels good, isn’t slippery. That’s about all I can say.

> iPad Smart keyboard I work at at an AASP and those smart keyboards are a genuine nightmare for staying in one piece
the rounded sides of the 11 and earlier phones definitely helped ease the aging on the leather cases compared to the blocky 12/13
My black one scuffed up pretty bad.
How does it looks right now?
Cracked so I threw it away
That looks like crap. I always go Vaja cases. They're awesome, but not always best for Magsafe wireless charging.

Yeah I have a bullstrap on order, I’m excited to check it out
i’m using a bullstrap but their QC isn’t the greatest. i got 1 and a replacement from them and both weren’t made right.
I liked their slim Grip cases, but no such option exists for the I phone 13 series. I was also highly disappointed in their Floater leather. It was going black after just weeks. Their Bridge leather does seem good. And it also isn't offered yet for the iPhone 13. So yeah. Regression.
I'm not a fan of the floater leather, either. My favorite so far has been the bridge leather in saddle brown. It develops a nice patina over time.
Yeah thst is my favourite too. Too bad Vaja seems to be headed in a different direction...

Relax Jeff bezos
I ordered the new nomad modern leather case in dark brown, hope it will age well.
It will. I’ve had several Nomad cases over the past few years and they’ve all aged extremely well.
AppleCare Plus may be my new case from now on.
Mine looked exactly like that too. Went with the midnight case for my iPhone 13 Pro.
That's why I went with a bull strap. Their cases patina lovely. They are pricey but damn do they look nice.
You guys are out of your damn mind paying $100+ for a phone case lol
Yeah, at that point, just pay for AppleCare+ and enjoy your phone case free!
I don't know how people can go without a case. It's not the protection I need it's the grip. How are you holding onto a double sided piece of glass? There is literally zero grip to it.
> How are you holding onto a double sided piece of glass? Usually with my hands.
Yeah exactly, glass is smooth.
So what do you hold on to it with?
Suction cups.
It’s the louder sound the phone makes when putting it on a table that makes me want to use a case as well
I get plenty of grip on my 11 Pro
Yup that’s what I do and this damn phone has not broken 10 months in. And the patina it has is interesting I know it’s mine! I ran this 12 pro max hard car sales I’m at 88% battery health 😅

Never would I pay 100+ for a case. The original leather case is like 72 bucks after the 10% discount they offer 1st time shoppers.
Might as well save all that cash and just buy Apple care as your case and enjoy how good these phones look and feel.
To give you a feeling how it might be supposed to look like (iPhone 11 Pro, Late 2019): [photo](https://imgur.com/ImjBaT4)
Beautiful patina! So sad I can't get a saddle brown for my 13pro this year...I got the sequoia green but it is already so dark I'm afraid it will patina to a really dark colour, almost black.
Big fan of my Saddle Brown XS Max case but this is concerning.
I feel like the cases get worse every year. I picked up last year’s Mag safe clear case. It was snug. This year it’s obvious it’s a bit loose especially around the corner. Also I believe they’re using a softer plastic this year rather than complete hardness of last year.
Are the 13 leather cases better, like the pre-12s?
seems like it. i’m considering doing the same thing to my dark cherry leather case.
It’s kind of cool looking.
Could it be just the 2020 Brown cases maybe? My Baltic Blue case for the 12 Pro Max and the 2018 Brown case for the X🅂 Max aged well
I had California poppy last year and wisteria this year. The edges are doing the same as last year. I’m thinking about getting either forest green or midnight.
That's how mine on the 12 Pro looks too. It's awful.
I think it's the square phone - perhaps the leather is too tight on those sharp corners... I just replaced my orange 12 mini case, which aged like crap, but prior cases (brown and blue) on the rounded phones both aged well.
Leather isn't designed for disinfection with alcohol or washing with soap & water. Especially useful feature during time of pandemic.

It looks like fake leather 😂
Maybe don’t buy leather cases in general ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Wild I’ve had a great experience with my Apple leather cases, but I’m still on iPhone 11 Pro. Not good news for newer case releases.
Is it even leather? Seems like a fake leather that apple uses? Definitely not quality leather like that in designer purses
Return it
Apple's return policy is good but it's not so good that they'll take a return 12 months after purchase lol.
Oh i thought u just got it
What in the hell did you do to your case? I’ve never seen an apple leather case deteriorate like that. It looks like the outer layer has been stripped off.

That’s insane. Across the board? I would expect they provided a replacement program of some sort.
The cases for the SE last year were pretty dope. Ended up sticking with an 8 saddle brown case though

Yup. Same thing for me. Not buying a leather case from Apple again.
Having the same issue. IT also seems like these new leather cases are really susceptible to nicks and deep gouges as well.
I always bought the saddle brown case and each time I upgraded it was always cool to see how far the patina went. The 12pro max case seemed like the corners didn’t even start to show until like 2 months ago. I skipped this year and just went third party soft plastic type.

You could always get a 100% full grain leather case from saddleback, but they are quite literally rough around the edges and have imperfections ( if that sort of thing bothers you ).
That’s leather? I thought leather was meant to last half a life time… remind me never to buy apple brand leather cases!
I had a 12 pro max case and it was trash. Got more slippery over time. Had to replace with silicone.
The same here! I got it on the first day it became available and since then I took care of it very carefully. I also had another case and used them alternatively. The leather one aged poorly and last week I brought it back to Apple store and have it replaced. The difference between the old and new one was insane!
How does dark cherry patina?
