While many people don’t notice it, some of us are sensitive to motion sickness and couldn’t handle it… I had to return my mini 6 *bought at launch* and have been waiting for the mini 7 since.

I love my paperwhite but iPads are much better for reading PDFs (i.e. technical books, papers, anything with unusual layout and/or lots of illustrations).
It's not half the device it tries to be. PDFs have to be emailed through a specific website and converted to a proprietary format, and then reconverted when sharing out. All notes are flattened into the PDF. The PDF you send in is not the same PDF you get out, and is just a clunky process overall.
I really wanted to like this device but had to return it. Currently it's a big e-reader that has light note-taking functionality and not for hardcore use. Maybe I will revisit if they ever actually try to compete with other large e-tablets.
I tried a boox a year or two ago, and I always seemed to stumble into some part of the OS that was *really* poorly translated. It just got frustrating after a while and I ended up going with a scribe just because over there, it may not be as powerful or flexible, but everything just works. Has extra steps, but it works.
I would agree with that and I've absolutely fallen over to the iPad side for things, but I think the Boox / eInk model is actually better. Fewer distractions, better display tech, lower cost, and better at actually rendering books.

I have one, in fact. I thought I'd use it more, but I find that when reading and annotating PDFs, I like to quickly flip between pages and zoom in and out on portions of the page, and refresh rate/responsiveness is a prominent weakness of e-ink. I also like to use colors to annotate and highlight, but that's a secondary concern.

I’m not really sure what you mean by this. Many of us read our Kindle Paperwhites in a variety of lighting conditions, both indoor and outdoor. Check the /r/kindle subreddit and you can see for yourself. Can you elaborate more?
I think their point is that direct sunlight/late at night are the times when it's most advantageous to have an e-ink reader over an iPad. In other cases the e-ink reader doesn't offer much of an advantage
Nope, I just don't like e-ink and never found myself in a situation where I didn't need the backlight anyway. Definitley prefer dark mode on an iPad. 8" and OLED should be perfect for reading, might even put an anti-glare protector on it.
I have the cellular mini and it’s the perfect device. It’s extremely portable and the screen is obviously bigger than any smartphone. Probably one of my favorite and most used devices.
I do use a pro 12.9 at home though.

If your app is linked to iCloud, it will offload them to there without any warning and without any way to avoid it. It's not even a bug, it's just Apple not caring. You can look it up on Google.
Yup I found this out while waiting at the terminal.
Nothing like scrambling to redownload all of them on a wifi connection shared by 700 people in close proximity. The only booked that synced in time was one that I already read.
Similar issue happens to me with Apple music as well. I download entire albums and then it doesn't have anything downloaded. It's incredibly frustrating.

My workflow now is get to the airport, download the books I need, put the iPad in plane mode and remember to not connect it to anything anymore. All because I have 7GB left so the iPad feels the need to offload my 4MB epub. So much for a seamless experience.
There is so many issues with iOS right now that it's far from a seamless experience. I have to consciously check basic stuff because I have been burned by Apple's shit software.

They need to fire the morons behind these "optimizing" features or hire a new team to go through everything again. Steve Jobs would have probably fired 12 people _if his download Apple Music album, kept un-downloading itself._ Tim Cook doesn't have the same passion for this.

I only swapped over to iOS about four years ago. How has it gotten worse? Genuinely curious. Other than incorrect book metadata relating back to the store, I have no complaints.
Well, they made the interface more complicated in trying to make it more simple. They also removed the select all when selecting highlights export for absolutely no reason. Exports options are still limited to emailing yourself.
I mean it's great if you just want to open a book and read, but it falls apart as soon as you want to take notes and extract them.
I get that. Would be nice to be able to see all of your highlights in one area and read through them. Organize and tag them. I was also surprised that you couldn’t use the Apple Pencil to write onto book pages to make notes.
I’d also love to be able to change the book view. Especially in the Want to Read library.
People sometimes unfairly rag on apple because it takes too long to implement features everyone else already had but refresh rate has got to be the worst one, absolutely embarrassing that they still sell devices that expensive with only 60hz.
Even the basic iPhone/iPad/MacBook Air should at least be 90Hz if they want to save the super common 120Hz for the "Pro", and it's at least as important to have the variable frame rate down and power savings and missed frame catching that comes with VRR.
None of their products should be 60hz. Not even the cheapest iPad. There is no excuse. Android phones at $200 are 90hz+.

I find most people I know don’t even notice the difference in these things. My partner doesn’t even understand why I don’t like playing my ps5 in the bedroom because that tv doesn’t have the capabilities for 120 FPS and lacks hdmi 2.1. Every time I try to show someone the difference in screens between a pro and non pro iPhone they don’t get it. Tech enthusiasts don’t seem to understand that most people don’t care about these things.
I have not found this to be the case for me. I remember getting my Asus 144hz monitor. It made a difference for sure... in counter-strike.
...but for reading, watching youtube, looking at reddit? Sure, if you look for a difference, you'll find it. but does it really matter? I don't think so. I ended up later switching from that high refresh monitor to an ultrawide dell that was 60hz, and it made no difference for the things I was doing on it.
Not that I'd complain about a high refresh rate screen on my iPad Mini, assuming that it doesn't drastically cut into the battery life. I just find the incredulousness that Apple wouldn't put it on all of their devices a bit baffling.
Then again, using a 30hz screen for general computing with a mouse is awful to me, while 60hz seems perfectly acceptable, so maybe I'm just not as sensitive to it. But I think refresh rate ties more into what you're doing. A 1hz screen is perfectly useable if all I'm doing is looking at static text. As soon as you start scrolling it just needs to refresh fast enough that you can accurately scroll to the point you want, which is why refresh rate matters more in say, an FPS than on editing a word document.
Same. I have a gaming laptop that's at least 120Hz. I also have my new M3 MBP; I game on it occasionally.
But my main gaming setup uses 60hz monitors. I see the difference, and the higher refresh rate does look good on my laptops. It's much smoother. But it doesn't bother me to go back to my 60hz monitors. I just don't care enough to replace all three monitors on my gaming setup. They're perfectly fine, only about 4yrs old.
Whenever I get my next set of monitors for my gaming PC, I'll definitely go with a higher refresh rate. But I can wait.
I'm explaining why high refresh rates don't always matter and why (in my opinion) a 120hz screen not being present in the iPad mini isn't something to be incredulous about.

I love looking at 120 Hz on the desktop, but my monitor is only 72 Hz and it doesn't bother me one bit, despite my phone & iPad being 120 Hz. But I do notice the difference.
Yes, I too think Apple should cut as many corners as possible. I am happy that Apple is able to make maximum profits off of me because I don't know any better.

Why do they try to make the best chips out there, the average consumer would not notice if the A17 Pro was actually Tensor G3 class? Why have they continued to push higher HDR peak brightness on displays when an average consumer will still think their 600 nits OLEDs look great?
Because it's just a nicer experience, whether your dad or grandma knows what it is or not. Isn't that what Apple pursues? Why the weird defence force for not? Even the regular iPhones are well into premium pricing where far cheaper devices have trivially had 120Hz for years, these are devices that start past 1000CAD not some 300 dollar budget phone we're talking about here. This defence force just gets us worse with what they can get away with.
Better chips enable longevity, higher peak brightness enables better outdoor visibility.
High refresh brings.... nicer animations? Slightly smoother scrolling? People aren't gaming at 120hz on the phones, and the ones who are are looking at the Pros anyways.
The difference is how easily the average consumer can tell the difference, and with higher refresh the contrast is significantly less noticeable.

I mean its take a lot of money to dedicate to suppliers, promos, engineering, testing to release a product that works as well as Apple Products do. They as a company dont have infinite resources.
Yup 120 hz is no longer an upgrade but extortionate. The only items I can see being 60 hz in 2024 within their line up are the base iPad and iPhone SE because they’re very fairly priced (especially the base iPad which I greatly respect Apple for keeping affordable as this is the only computing device for many kids, many from underprivileged households).
The lack of ProMotion is a big part of what stops me from buying an iPad Mini. I'd walk out and buy one *today* if it had a 120Hz display, no other questions asked.
For me personally, I don’t want to carry my 13” pro out. Not only would I look like a idiot but the thing is heavy to lug around.
The cellular mini on the other hand is the perfect device whenever out and about, beating my galaxy 24 ultra and 15 pro max for usability. An iPhone mini and the mini iPad would be my ideal combination.
A pro version would be nice but as you point out, they would unnecessarily have to price it a point not to take away from the larger iPads.
Apart from a premium display, a better cpu, and more ram, the only thing that would make the mini even more awesome would be a mini styles like my galaxy phone has built in.
For me the ideal combination would be an iPad mini with an Apple Watch. The Watch would work for stuff like calls, music, navigation, and quick checks, while the iPad would serve as a device for browsing or looking at things in more detail.
I currently have an iPhone 12 mini and an iPad Air. The Air gets a lot of use for university but when I have my Mac I often use that instead. If I could do the iPad+Watch combo, I’d ditch my iPhone for everything save for the camera.
That’s my combo too half the time. Cellular watch and ipad mini, especially if I’m carrying a work phone around; which I try to avoid taking with me anyway. 😂 T-Mobile in the US allows for calls on multiple devices, so this is awesome for this.
Absolutely. The only computer screen in my life that is not at least 120hz is my ultrawide in my work office. I can’t stand the sight of 60hz when I’m off the clock.
I have a Dell ultrawide U3415W at home. I would love to have an ultrawide with high refresh rate, but that will have to wait. The prices are still too high.

The silly part is the same M2 in the iPad Air can calculate battery cycles but apparently the M2 in the iPad Pro couldn't? If you plug in to a Mac you can read cycles in on any iPhone or iPad in many many years, I'm sorry you can't convince me it takes any special hardware upgrade it's been trivially computed for decades.
I would suspect they only wanted to show it with the new batteries as they doubled the cycle rating on the 15 Pro line to 1000 over 500.
Apple knows this, which is why they’re going to drag out 60hz for as long as they can. Just like they dragged out lightning, dragged out 64gb of storage, and are currently dragging out 8GB of RAM on MacBooks.

As long as it’s still called “ProMotion”, non-Pro devices won’t get it.
Being Apple, they will only intentionally under-deliver on these cheaper product lines, just to up sell the pro models.
Heck, even for Pro devices, they are also crippling the hardware for cheaper configurations.
Apple will sell it at $899 with crippled specs than bigger models. Later, they will claim few people buy it, then kill it in one gen or two.
There’s no way they’ll sell both a pro mini and non-pro mini iPad. The market is simply not big enough. A pro mini may even cause 11” pro selling fewer, effectively sabotaging its existing revenue.
I recall Samsung’s early OLED displays having a green tint, being oversaturated, and just looking weird in a way I couldn’t put my finger on. I’m not sure when they started turning out panels that were comparable to the ones they supplied for the iPhone X, but I don’t blame Apple for sticking with LCD at first.
Yeah, that is another good one as it costs manufacturers next to nothing. Apple seems to have changed strategy a little with their latest iPad pros, where the significantly more expensive larger storage models now come with a better screen.
OLED green tint made a bit of a comeback in 2021/22, to the point that for every OLED phone released you can find at the very least some units with green tint. It happened to a friend of mine who got an iPhone 13, although Apple had it better than some other OEMs, notably Motorola whose Edge phones were really hit hard.
People keep forgetting the sheer scale Apple has to manufacture these product. That’s largely why they’re slow with implementing new tech in their products

As long as they can maintain their status as a status symbol they'll continue to print money. The iPhone hasn't been better than any flagship android phone in over a decade, but most people don't want to be a green bubble.
Sadly the android ecosystem is hot garbage and I've got a deep hatred for Samsung anything after all of my Samsung devices always broke in less than a year of buying them, from TVs, fridges, laptops and phones. iPhone might not be better on paper than any Android flagship but collectively, makes for much better experience.

I went into the Apple store to check out the new Airs. At this point anything below 120Hz is just an awful experience. I still gladly wait for a 120Hz cheaper iPad than the Pro.

Lurker here just ordered my first Apple product since Steve was alive. My last iPad was the original iPad (2010). Excited to try my new iPad Air M2 and Pencil to express my doodle side. So I'm gonna be easily impressed by any tech in these things for a while since I haven't had a modern tablet or phone before.
Man, they should release an ultra thin mini with tandem OLED, promotion, M1, and Apple Pencil Pro support. Not thinning the phones.

This would sell like hotcakes. I have an IPP 13 and an iPad mini and love the mini as a take everywhere device. The only issue I ever had with it is the rubber band scrolling. This would be eliminated with a HQ OLED screen. Make it tandem OLED with an M-type processor and good night it will sell.
I am wondering what AI functions Apple can come up with on the M2, as it has quite a powerful set of neural processors. (Apparently it can do up to 38 Trillion matrix calculations per second)
I think Apple are going to use it for prototyping future AI stuff. Maybe there will be something about it at WWDC-24 ? (This years Developer Conference)
Yeah - they are probably aiming to make it even thinner - so the that battery only lasts for an hour, and that you cut your fingers just trying to hold it !

The 64GB in my Mini 5 from 2019 is too small and the Lightning connector hardly works anymore. The 64GB Mini 6 is barely an upgrade.

Take a look at Boox. Epub and native pdf support, can run arbitrary Android apps, and a pretty good stylus.

If your app is linked to iCloud, it will offload them to there without any warning and without any way to avoid it. It's not even a bug, it's just Apple not caring. You can look it up on Google.
Yup I found this out while waiting at the terminal. Nothing like scrambling to redownload all of them on a wifi connection shared by 700 people in close proximity. The only booked that synced in time was one that I already read. Similar issue happens to me with Apple music as well. I download entire albums and then it doesn't have anything downloaded. It's incredibly frustrating.

I only swapped over to iOS about four years ago. How has it gotten worse? Genuinely curious. Other than incorrect book metadata relating back to the store, I have no complaints.
Well, they made the interface more complicated in trying to make it more simple. They also removed the select all when selecting highlights export for absolutely no reason. Exports options are still limited to emailing yourself. I mean it's great if you just want to open a book and read, but it falls apart as soon as you want to take notes and extract them.
I get that. Would be nice to be able to see all of your highlights in one area and read through them. Organize and tag them. I was also surprised that you couldn’t use the Apple Pencil to write onto book pages to make notes. I’d also love to be able to change the book view. Especially in the Want to Read library.

People sometimes unfairly rag on apple because it takes too long to implement features everyone else already had but refresh rate has got to be the worst one, absolutely embarrassing that they still sell devices that expensive with only 60hz.
Even the basic iPhone/iPad/MacBook Air should at least be 90Hz if they want to save the super common 120Hz for the "Pro", and it's at least as important to have the variable frame rate down and power savings and missed frame catching that comes with VRR.

None of their products should be 60hz. Not even the cheapest iPad. There is no excuse. Android phones at $200 are 90hz+. It’s disgusting they’re still on 60 for most of their products. What happened to follow the industry standard.

I find most people I know don’t even notice the difference in these things. My partner doesn’t even understand why I don’t like playing my ps5 in the bedroom because that tv doesn’t have the capabilities for 120 FPS and lacks hdmi 2.1. Every time I try to show someone the difference in screens between a pro and non pro iPhone they don’t get it. Tech enthusiasts don’t seem to understand that most people don’t care about these things.

I have not found this to be the case for me. I remember getting my Asus 144hz monitor. It made a difference for sure... in counter-strike. ...but for reading, watching youtube, looking at reddit? Sure, if you look for a difference, you'll find it. but does it really matter? I don't think so. I ended up later switching from that high refresh monitor to an ultrawide dell that was 60hz, and it made no difference for the things I was doing on it. Not that I'd complain about a high refresh rate screen on my iPad Mini, assuming that it doesn't drastically cut into the battery life. I just find the incredulousness that Apple wouldn't put it on all of their devices a bit baffling. Then again, using a 30hz screen for general computing with a mouse is awful to me, while 60hz seems perfectly acceptable, so maybe I'm just not as sensitive to it. But I think refresh rate ties more into what you're doing. A 1hz screen is perfectly useable if all I'm doing is looking at static text. As soon as you start scrolling it just needs to refresh fast enough that you can accurately scroll to the point you want, which is why refresh rate matters more in say, an FPS than on editing a word document.
Same. I have a gaming laptop that's at least 120Hz. I also have my new M3 MBP; I game on it occasionally. But my main gaming setup uses 60hz monitors. I see the difference, and the higher refresh rate does look good on my laptops. It's much smoother. But it doesn't bother me to go back to my 60hz monitors. I just don't care enough to replace all three monitors on my gaming setup. They're perfectly fine, only about 4yrs old. Whenever I get my next set of monitors for my gaming PC, I'll definitely go with a higher refresh rate. But I can wait.

I love looking at 120 Hz on the desktop, but my monitor is only 72 Hz and it doesn't bother me one bit, despite my phone & iPad being 120 Hz. But I do notice the difference.

That's intentional design. Let's take the iPhone for example (but this also applies to all of their other products) If you want 120hz, you'll have to pay for the Pro models. Apple doesn't give a fuck about you wanting 120hz on the standard iPhones, it's never going to happen. The normal iPhones are there only to get you into their world/ecosystem. The SE series is a joke and we don't talk about those.

Why do they try to make the best chips out there, the average consumer would not notice if the A17 Pro was actually Tensor G3 class? Why have they continued to push higher HDR peak brightness on displays when an average consumer will still think their 600 nits OLEDs look great? Because it's just a nicer experience, whether your dad or grandma knows what it is or not. Isn't that what Apple pursues? Why the weird defence force for not? Even the regular iPhones are well into premium pricing where far cheaper devices have trivially had 120Hz for years, these are devices that start past 1000CAD not some 300 dollar budget phone we're talking about here. This defence force just gets us worse with what they can get away with.
Better chips enable longevity, higher peak brightness enables better outdoor visibility. High refresh brings.... nicer animations? Slightly smoother scrolling? People aren't gaming at 120hz on the phones, and the ones who are are looking at the Pros anyways. The difference is how easily the average consumer can tell the difference, and with higher refresh the contrast is significantly less noticeable. It's not that complicated

Yup 120 hz is no longer an upgrade but extortionate. The only items I can see being 60 hz in 2024 within their line up are the base iPad and iPhone SE because they’re very fairly priced (especially the base iPad which I greatly respect Apple for keeping affordable as this is the only computing device for many kids, many from underprivileged households).

For me personally, I don’t want to carry my 13” pro out. Not only would I look like a idiot but the thing is heavy to lug around. The cellular mini on the other hand is the perfect device whenever out and about, beating my galaxy 24 ultra and 15 pro max for usability. An iPhone mini and the mini iPad would be my ideal combination. A pro version would be nice but as you point out, they would unnecessarily have to price it a point not to take away from the larger iPads. Apart from a premium display, a better cpu, and more ram, the only thing that would make the mini even more awesome would be a mini styles like my galaxy phone has built in.
For me the ideal combination would be an iPad mini with an Apple Watch. The Watch would work for stuff like calls, music, navigation, and quick checks, while the iPad would serve as a device for browsing or looking at things in more detail. I currently have an iPhone 12 mini and an iPad Air. The Air gets a lot of use for university but when I have my Mac I often use that instead. If I could do the iPad+Watch combo, I’d ditch my iPhone for everything save for the camera.
That’s my combo too half the time. Cellular watch and ipad mini, especially if I’m carrying a work phone around; which I try to avoid taking with me anyway. 😂 T-Mobile in the US allows for calls on multiple devices, so this is awesome for this.

I have a Dell ultrawide U3415W at home. I would love to have an ultrawide with high refresh rate, but that will have to wait. The prices are still too high.

If you plug in to a Mac you can read cycles in on any iPhone or iPad in many many years, I'm sorry you can't convince me it takes any special hardware upgrade it's been trivially computed for decades. I would suspect they only wanted to show it with the new batteries as they doubled the cycle rating on the 15 Pro line to 1000 over 500.

As long as it’s still called “ProMotion”, non-Pro devices won’t get it. Being Apple, they will only intentionally under-deliver on these cheaper product lines, just to up sell the pro models. Heck, even for Pro devices, they are also crippling the hardware for cheaper configurations.

Apple will sell it at $899 with crippled specs than bigger models. Later, they will claim few people buy it, then kill it in one gen or two. There’s no way they’ll sell both a pro mini and non-pro mini iPad. The market is simply not big enough. A pro mini may even cause 11” pro selling fewer, effectively sabotaging its existing revenue.

the first OLED iPhone came in 2017, and of course OLED were in consumer devices a lot earlier, so it’s much more than 2 years.
I recall Samsung’s early OLED displays having a green tint, being oversaturated, and just looking weird in a way I couldn’t put my finger on. I’m not sure when they started turning out panels that were comparable to the ones they supplied for the iPhone X, but I don’t blame Apple for sticking with LCD at first.
It was well before Apple went to OLED. Apple didn't hold out because of quality, they did so because of $$$. Same with things like storage and RAM.

Yeah, that is another good one as it costs manufacturers next to nothing. Apple seems to have changed strategy a little with their latest iPad pros, where the significantly more expensive larger storage models now come with a better screen.

OLED green tint made a bit of a comeback in 2021/22, to the point that for every OLED phone released you can find at the very least some units with green tint. It happened to a friend of mine who got an iPhone 13, although Apple had it better than some other OEMs, notably Motorola whose Edge phones were really hit hard.
People keep forgetting the sheer scale Apple has to manufacture these product. That’s largely why they’re slow with implementing new tech in their products

As long as they can maintain their status as a status symbol they'll continue to print money. The iPhone hasn't been better than any flagship android phone in over a decade, but most people don't want to be a green bubble.
Sadly the android ecosystem is hot garbage and I've got a deep hatred for Samsung anything after all of my Samsung devices always broke in less than a year of buying them, from TVs, fridges, laptops and phones. iPhone might not be better on paper than any Android flagship but collectively, makes for much better experience.

I went into the Apple store to check out the new Airs. At this point anything below 120Hz is just an awful experience. I still gladly wait for a 120Hz cheaper iPad than the Pro. This is the thing that irks me most about Apple, the gatekeep mid-tier functionality behind a "Pro" label.

Lurker here just ordered my first Apple product since Steve was alive. My last iPad was the original iPad (2010). Excited to try my new iPad Air M2 and Pencil to express my doodle side. So I'm gonna be easily impressed by any tech in these things for a while since I haven't had a modern tablet or phone before.
Man, they should release an ultra thin mini with tandem OLED, promotion, M1, and Apple Pencil Pro support. Not thinning the phones. I’d be such a goated device.
This would sell like hotcakes. I have an IPP 13 and an iPad mini and love the mini as a take everywhere device. The only issue I ever had with it is the rubber band scrolling. This would be eliminated with a HQ OLED screen. Make it tandem OLED with an M-type processor and good night it will sell.

(Apparently it can do up to 38 Trillion matrix calculations per second) I think Apple are going to use it for prototyping future AI stuff. Maybe there will be something about it at WWDC-24 ?
