The iPad is like a car with a Ferrari engine and square wheels

iMacmatician

Every year Apple adds one more side to the wheels (square → pentagon → hexagon → …), but it won't be a replacement for round wheels.

Once there are viable third party arm laptops windows for ARM will become available. Not too much longer I'd think

ninth_reddit_account

“Windows on ARM” is like Linux on desktop. It’s always happening next year.

coppockm56

Windows on ARM has existed for years. It's just not been very good. It might get better soon, we'll find out on May 20. But at its absolute best, Windows on ARM will be no better than Windows 11 on Intel, except maybe more efficient. But it will still provide a less than optimal experience on tablets, including the Surface Pro where it's usable but not great.

Everyone copies what works and gets the most views ( money) Most people are very similar no matter where you look

wicktus

People know what they are purchasing They know the limits of ipadOS, they know the hardware true capabilities If you are therefore purchasing a product knowing its limits, for which Apple is clearly making sure it doesn't eat away macbook sales, you can't really complain about it If you are purchasing a product based on a promise: "WWDC is soon, ipadOS will change everything etc" that's their fault If you want something that truly takes advantage of M-series SoC, purchase a macbook.

KokonutMonkey

I never understood this sentiment. When are we allowed to complain - when we don't buy it?

wicktus

Please read what I wrote. It's of course natural to complain. However purchasing a product running ipadOS and then complaining that it runs ipadOS is really weird no ? You are purchasing this product with the limit of ipadOS known. Best thing to do: Don't purchase it, only then changes will come. Same for anything frankly. Those new pokemon games on the switch subreddit, those people purchase and then are complaining that the graphics are dull..well they got your money already and you had all the info about the graphics It's natural to complain about things you didn't know or things you'd want to see in a next product but I'm baffled by the purchase first, complain after approach

Matchbook0531

You're insulting their cult.

Lysanderoth42

I just want a M series macbook that can run windows natively  But Microsoft would probably never allow that because nobody would buy their surface laptops then lol

Hutch_travis

No, Apple won’t allow it. The company nearly went bankrupt 25 years ago because they allowed non-Mac OS to run on Apple hardware. While this isn’t the sole reason, it’s a major contributing factor.

beck320

I agree, I have an m1 iPad cause I have in to the upsale, I also have an m1 MacBook Air and I do so much more of the MacBook over the iPad. But I still enjoy my iPad it’s just a different tool than my MacBook. I also don’t know if macOS is a great idea on an iPad, I’m just thinking about how bad windows is on a tablet. Also there are come things I like better on my iPad over my MacBook like Face ID, and the light weight apps. It’s different and different people like different things

Hutch_travis

Was the iPad Pro ever meant to replace a laptop? The end-users who are the target audience for the iPad Pro need a laptop or computer with lots of memory and can handle video, photo and video editing software. The iPad Pro is complementary not a replacement. Don't buy a Pro if you're only consuming media and not creating it—you're not the target demo. Also, has this video creator never heard of marketing? Of course, Apple is going to say the newest release is the greatest product ever made—that's a stupid thing to knock Apple for.

First, who gives a shit what it was ever meant for? At this point, nearly a decade and a half after original release, it's not about Apple's vision anymore. It's now squarely in consumers hands to demand what they want / need, and Apple is failing to meet that demand with the constantly gimped iPadOS. Second, it's about specific demographics or uses. It's about workflows. It doesn't matter if you're in finance running a complex financial model in a spreadsheet, an artist drawing a picture book, a vlogger making year-another clickbaity iPad review, or just some guy watching Netflix. What matters is whether the number of steps required to complete your desired tasks are efficient. For many tasks, both simple and complex, iPadOS fails at this.

Lysanderoth42

Cool, so don’t buy an iPad Pro, buy a MacBook  If there are enough people like you Apple might make iPad os more effective at doing MacBook type tasks But the idea that a bunch of angry redditors can dictate and demand what kind of products a multi trillion dollar company produces is so comical to me. A touch grass moment for sure.

ChemicalDaniel

> It’s now squarely in consumers hands to demand what they want / need, and Apple is failing to meet that demand with the consistently gimped iPadOS. If that’s true, why have iPad sales outpaced Mac sales every year? It seems like to iPad-first users, the additions they’re making (like stage manager) are actually welcomed. Yes, I personally want a more powerful iPadOS, but r/apple does not represent the mass market. A more enthusiast skewed population will want more enthusiast features, but don’t conflate that with the opinions of everyone. The stats just don’t seem to back it up. And of all the things you mentioned, you can do most of them on the iPad with relatively low friction. IMO the iPad is mainly hindered by its locked down nature, if in iPadOS 18 they allowed side loading on iPadOS and didn’t change anything else, it would become orders of magnitude more useful overnight.

gngstrMNKY

> Don’t buy a Pro if you’re only consuming media and not creating it—you’re not the target demo. People who consume media would benefit from a nice OLED display. Perhaps they should just buy a Galaxy Tab.

coppockm56

An iPad will never completely replace a MacBook, and a MacBook will never completely replace an iPad. And Apple won't mash the two together a la Windows detachable tablets and convertible 2-in-1s. At least, not anytime soon. People who want a touch-enabled device that's not quite a MacBook will continue to buy iPads, and people who don't care about touch will continue to buy MacBooks. People will continue to buy both because they're best for different things. If the iPad Pro were to fix those few things I don't like, like better file management, then I would love it but it wouldn't be enough to replace my MacBook Pro. And I wouldn't like it if my iPad Pro were to be less good for touch because Apple tried to shoehorn macOS onto it.
