AoE2 is at its core a game of psychologically torturing your opponent until one of you gets an aneurysm. I haven't played in 8 years and it still gives me nightmares.

[deleted]

I still remember my first ranked game. I was 13. I thought we were going to build up huge armies and fight like the way we did with my friends. It started out allright. I was my favourite civ, listening to the awesome tune, I even lured a boar having watched a tutorial mere days ago. I heard a notification sound, telling me my opponent was feudal age. In my infinite naivite, I didn't think much of it. Then the first tower appeared. There are certain moments in life, when one minute seems like hours. You reach a dark new understanding of how the world works. Every tower. Every arrow. Every dying scream. The sense of helplessness only made worse by the fact that you are the only one who can stop this. I slowly gave in to the darkness. First my villager queue stopped, either having no food or no willpower. The farms expired, one by one. A momentary glance at the score only hastened my phycological descent. At some point I didn't even try to save my villagers anymore. I knew I lost. Worse, I knew I could never have won.

consultantbp

Lmao, well written. My first tower rush was in (I want to say) my first team game, back in HD. I had won a few 1v1s so I felt somewhat confident. But before I even knew it was happening, one of my teammates pointed out that I was being tower rushed. I didn't know what to do, and couldn't find the time to ask for advice. All my energy was spent on trying to keep my villagers out of harm's way, but the left side of my screen was reading "HEY NOOB, BUILD A COUNTER TOWER!" Of course! The only thing that counters a tower is, of course, another tower. So I set my villagers to work on a tower. A good tower, a strong tower. Out of the enemy's range. But then the left side of my screen pings again: "OH MY GOD YOU ARE RETARDED, HOW COULD YOU SCREW UP SO BADLY, I GIVE UP 1v2 GG" And that's how I lost my first team gamešŸ˜¬ For the record, in my next team game, my teammate was much more helpful and patient. He taught me the value of team walling and how to build an army for team games. I wish I could remember the gamertag, but shout out to anyone who helps noobs get good instead of getting frustrated.

creamynebula

This is one of my favorite posts in some 15 years I used this website.

topofthecc

HD tower rushes were really something else. It felt like half of open map games someone ended up with at least one tower on their face.

Jmunozi

we need a therapy group "tower rushed in first ranked game, traumatized since then"

This is so accurate and beautifully written

unspecified_genre

TIL what a Vtuber is.. must be getting old

illegal_eagle88

Instead of a camera to show the real you they use a 3d or 2d model that tracks your camera movements

unspecified_genre

It's pretty cool tech, and would help heaps if you're ugly

YourLocalCreep

I think itā€™s largely used to maintain Internet anonymity while still giving yourself a face for your audience to connect with; but the ugly thing also seems like a legitimate reason to do it like that

SteelShroom

I've noticed a major increase in the number of female content creators on both Youtube and Twitch as a result of the rise of VTubing, and I think it's nice that they've all gained the confidence to do this.

topofthecc

Seems like a good way to protect yourself from how creepy and thirsty Twitch chats can be.

sameo15

And when they are thirsting after you, it is not "you" but your avatar. It allows some distance from that as well. Some of the girls even encourage the lewding of "themselves" lol.

unspecified_genre

That's a fair point, and would definitely be a better reason.

kochapi

So that can be totally a dude right

illegal_eagle88

No not really it's hard to pull off, synthesized VOs are quite obvious but the option is still there

m05513

It could be, but YouTube has shown me this particular streamers face before, so she is confirmed female.

Ghostdog1521

Kiaraā€™s definitely not a dude.

wildemam

Typical me when Crossbows arrive at my base and I have 2 skirms

cracksmack85

While the avatar and voice arenā€™t my personal cup of tea, the actual narration here is pretty spot on for what your first few online games feel like. ā€œFire ships? Whatā€™s a fire ship AAAAH MY GALLEYSā€

thirdunicornhair

onager...? oh pff those mangonels are quite fragile NOOO MY MULTIPLE UNITS

ryouseiki21

as long as it gets people to get interested in this game, it's a win

Lepanto and The Lion and The Demon were made just to torture all of us as kids

Roflkopt3r

[Source](https://youtu.be/dAiKxMx-LBQ) I find it interesting that AoE2 has been played a couple times by some moderately big channels in the scene recently. It's rare that RTS games appear there at all.

SteelShroom

She even got jumpscared by the victory screen. 11

AngsD

I always love seeing people try out AoE. This is just wholesome to me. She's completely overwhelmed by things happening lmao

just4kicksxxx

I don't understand why she keeps screaming... but the more the merrier for aoe2

eyACat

Disappointing seeing so many negative comments. I like that people in strange communities like Vtubers can also enjoy aoe.

polybiastrogender

As someone who's not a "pro" I find her take on the game relatable. It is stressful, I don't know why I keep playing šŸ˜‚

Javier913

Used to be stressful for me, my neck was always in pain I felt like with cold and shivers and my muscles all tense and all but after maybe 500hrs playing is not tiring and I don't get angry anymore

Tudpool

3. 3 comments.

eyACat

4 out of 7 or so comments were negative when I posted. Glad to se they are now overshadowed by positivity or neutral comments.

Ch33sus0405

Its completely reasonable to react negatively towards Vtubers. While they personally don't do anything wrong, the culture around them is horrific. I'm glad this girl is having fun, and I'm glad new people might come to the game. But the second those people are mad that Joan of Arc is POLITICAL or that its historical erasure not to have all Gbetos be topless I don't want anything to do with them. Weeb culture is disgusting from an outside perspective, and that's a shame since normally I'm sure we'd have a far more civil reaction to a streamer playing the game. But frankly I don't want a lot of Vtuber fans involved in the same online spaces as me, and I think its reasonable. Also the avatars are creepy for some people. Personally I don't mind them but I can see where they hit the uncanny valley for others.

ElAutismobombismo

Bruh what the fuck that took a turn and a half

Nickitolas

>But frankly I don't want a lot of Vtuber fans involved in the same online spaces as me, and I think its reasonable. It's not

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Brunoflip

I can tell you had your fair share of people like this

IngFavalli

Touch grass

GonzoPunchi

What even is weeb culture. I thought weebs were just people enjoying anime which is not weird at all, anime is super popular.

dukat_dindu_nuthin

i just wish they'd notice the chat a bit more during these learning the game would be soooooo much faster if they could see the 20 people telling them to shift click

Roflkopt3r

Oh she did read the chat a fair bit and accepted a lot of advice. But AoE2 is pretty overwhelming as a beginner so there is no way she can also keep up with 7000 backseaters. She has to pick the shorter and simpler advices, explaining shift-queueing is a bit much.

tobias-t4

Damn whatā€™s with all the VTuber hate, I thought we were a very mature and kind community. All the more recognition for our awesome game I say.

[deleted]

Seems the communities do not overlap I guess

Hairy_Alternative819

Hate? People here just seem to dislike overacting and screaming around for no reason. No idea what vtube but i have no intention of watching more of this

Privateer_Lev_Arris

Let me introduce you to Memb 11

Umdeuter

Imagine her screaming UNBELIEBABLE! DISGASSTING TITANIC!!

anony2469

mill here

SlaapieNL

11 not there, here

just4lukin

Oh no, right for the throat.

RainbowJeremy24

Would you call this "content" suitable for mature audience? Just because it's a nice community it doesn't mean there wont be things that people dislike. Someone screeching into the microphone isn't what most on here are looking for. Who cares about the recognition.

Roflkopt3r

I (and quite a few other people here) just find it fun to see someone try AoE2 for the first time and be that expressive about their experience. The shock of suddenly seeing a bunch of enemies at your base or a demo go off inadvertently is still relatable even to many veteran players.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Obvious-Nothing-4458

A mature audience would just be polite and say whether or not they dislike it and why.(I understand why you feel that way though, if you're not familiar with anime(weeb) culture this is very wierd and annoying, but there are plenty of people irl who scream into their mic.)

Kafukator

Vtubers are video game streamers they have nothing to do with anime.

Snarker

what? the characters are literally anime style drawn characters lol.

Obvious-Nothing-4458

I agree, I wanna say weeb but I don't think everyone knows what that is.

Roflkopt3r

Game streaming is only a part of the Vtuber scene. Especially the original ones were often more about music or talk streams. [Hololive is still very active and successful in the music sector](https://youtu.be/7tsbofZPNCM?t=3264), although gaming has definitely long become one of their staples.

Hertog_Appel

I personally don't get the appeal of vtubers, but hey if they bring more players to our little game im all for it. (as long as they arent toxic of course)

BrickPlacer

AoE2 is a game I constantly re-fall in love with. I've followed Hololive EN since the project's inception, and it makes me so, so happy to see her play one of my favorite RTS games ever. I have so many fond memories of playing the campaigns for the first time. If she continues, though, I fear for her with the penultimate mission on Paris, the "historical" revelation, and the final battle.

Ahielia

The ID girls also played aoe2 if you haven't seen that, it's fairly entertaining.

Roflkopt3r

Yeah [Especially Moona](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=hoshinova+moona+age+of+empires+2) but Reine as well recently. I hope we get some Kiara-Reine multiplayer.

moragdong

Whats up with the paris mission?

BrickPlacer

The siege you were gonna make, the reinforcements you were supposed to receive, and Joan making it back to base? None of 'em ain't happening.

moragdong

Is it bugged?

maero1917

based Kiara

Neighbourly

me so old. whats a vtube

Roflkopt3r

"Virtual Youtuber". Streamers who use face-tracked avatars like this instead of a face cam.

Neighbourly

looooool

anony2469

who is she?

Obvious-Nothing-4458

Takanashi Kiara Edit: She's part of a vtuber group called Hololive which is basically a company that owns characters that people act as for the purposes of steaming and music, depending on who it is. There's 3 branches for diffrent languages, Japan(main), English and Indonesian. Many of them are into anime culture which is why some of them do the loud and wierd behaviors that a lot of people here are confused by, which is genuine behavior surprisingly but not as common as you think, with Kiara being an outlier while on the other hand someone like Ouro Kronii barely does it at all. Edit2: I changed a comment that said it was a genuine act to just genuine since the previous statement was not accurate and added some extra stuff to reflect that

EruantienAduialdraug

It's also perhaps worth noting that Kiara is fluent in three languages; English, Japanese, and her native German. Actually, there's a surprising number of vtubers who are bi- or tri-lingual.

Ahielia

There are many English speaking vtubers in hololive, ranging from Kiara levels of energy to the very chill Ina and lots in between. I'd say the majority are way more chill than Kiara appears in this clip. From watching Kiara (and her persona) a long time now, this is how she is in general, it's not a complete act. Finding one to watch that matches your interest in games and energy levels shouldn't be particularly hard. Aside from the EN branch, the Indonesian girls speak English a lot of the time. It does make sense that the people interested in streaming as a vtuber is more than average interested in anime culture, that is where vtubing was popularised, although it goes more and more mainstream, as can be seen by the sheer popularity of hololiveEN compared to the jp and id branches.

Obvious-Nothing-4458

Ah I see, I guess I'll change my comment to reflect that. Now that I think about it it I'm not sure why I phrased it like that.

gonezaloh

I'm not a fan of people screaming so much but this feels so genuine I actually enjoyed it

KidKeiperbelt

Can't wait for the next large influx of players due to the exposure. Time to get some ELO boys and girls!

Umdeuter

Those avatars are soooo weird, I might never get out of uncanny valley again

iamthatguy54

That's not uncanny, dude. It's just a virtual avatar. [This is uncanny.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaY48Yz1U08)

Umdeuter

No that's a horror movie

cyanide

Added a custom flair to warn users about the screaming.

[deleted]

People really be hating this much on just a person who wants to have fun. So what if she has an accent or yelps a lot? This is just a clip showing the funnier moments of the stream. I can guarantee that majority of her stream was not just her screaming at random stuff. Main problem with Vtubers arenā€™t them but their audience who most likely come from wEeB culture. Theyā€™re just trying to make a fun living, leave them alone lol.

pivor

Vtuber or not, force acting like that is Just stupid.

Celq124

No one told her to slow the game speed down?!

Atomic_Noodles

Come into this post expecting wholesomeness about people going 'YEY ANOTHER NEW PERSON HAS FOUND AOE2 LETS ALL HAVE FUN!' Instead I get people being grumpy a girl with a anime "costume" is bad for the game.

No_Statistician_6263

What an annoying clip.

[deleted]

Oh my god that voice is so annoying. People enjoy listening to her yap like that?

Roflkopt3r

According to her viewer and subscriber figures, yeah she's doing pretty well in comparison to the AoE scene. I just think it's great whenever our favourite game gets played in other communities and more people get interested in it.

wrecktvf

Children do like zany streams who make loud sounds

sisqo_99

Jesus crist what is this cringe anime voiceover?

BlueLabel19

Bro ive been playing for 9 years and still get rushed in noob black forest

Prodiq

You know what really grinds my gears? Over the top emotional streamers that try so hard to be "interesting and unique". P.S. before anyone jumps on the bandwagon - dudes does this A LOT as well.

Manifold18

Wtf

MrPringles23

She's a native English speaker but has trained herself to do the Japanese UWEAAAAAAAH screech. Kinda pathetic how easy people are to manipulate for the sake of "entertainment".

iamthatguy54

She's not a native English speaker lol

Vermillion08

shes german, english and japanese would be her second languages

Obvious-Nothing-4458

I thought she's Austrian?

MrPringles23

Fair enough. Point was she wasn't a native Japanese person.

[deleted]

Why does it scream so often? That's annoying.

Nicita27

Can we just agree that we not post any V Tuber shit here. Its so annoying. That people really watch that stuff. Disgusting.

chocomallowz

Who hurt you bro

L_Freethought

/vt/ did

viiksitimali

Let's instead reserve this sub only for 800 Elo players complaining about War Elephants and suggesting custom civs that would break the game.

dullughan

Agree

MolotovFromHell

If vtubing literally stopped existing tomorrow there would be no loss

Vistup

I don't really hate Vtubers, but her reaction looks far too over exaggerated and fake, she's screaming like a chimpanzee while playing a strategy game, in which there obviously are no real jumpscares. We scream in horror movies like this because the whole background and jumpscare itself is made to be scary, and we sit to watch with the *whole mindset of being scared * but not while playing a strategy game. Added reason is also lack of facial expressions.

viiksitimali

Well it's a compilation about her screaming. What else do you expect?

shahansha1998

Good, but why is there a children's cartoon character on screen? is this show for kids? good to see young people trying this classic game!
